We had the pleasure of interviewing Big Mother Gig over Zoom video! Milwaukee-bred/LA-based indie rock band Big Mother Gig are pleased to present the brand new music video for “That Day,” the latest single to be lifted from the band's recently released full-length album, Gusto (order). For this particular song, home videos and photographs taken from three generations of frontman Richard Jankovich's family seemed to be only way to tell this story about a specific life event, trauma and how it can be passed down over several generations.“The song details real childhood events that deeply affected my Dad and which I believe impacted me,” he says. “It makes me wonder: ‘will those events also, in turn, maybe in a watered down way, also affect my daughter?' There have been studies that show that trauma gets encoded in DNA and can be passed down. That idea fascinates and terrifies me. The video ends with my daughter and my Dad who have their own bond. Not a dry eye in the house...” Watch the music video for “That Day” via Glide Magazine HERE and on YouTube HERE.A celebration of sobriety, Gusto is first and foremost a recovery record. “I celebrated my first year of sobriety alone over a stormy Spring weekend in a desert cabin with some recording gear,” Jankovich recalls. “The album just flowed out of me–13 songs over three days. I wrote from morning until night and it was cathartic.” Addressing family, marriage, addiction, anger, serotonin, despair and, ultimately, hope, Gusto is a wide-ranging, emotional journey that focuses on second chances. Stream the album in full on Spotify HERE.Previous Gusto singles “The Underdog feat Leah Wellbaum (Slothrust)” and “The Doctor Will See You Now” were premiered by Stereogum and American Songwriter, respectively, and have received support at commercial and non-commercial radio including SiriusXM and NPR stations. Gusto's singles have received editorial/official playlisting from Spotify, Apple and Amazon (as well as NPR “New Music Friday”) and have already amassed 250K views/streams. The band just signed with Madison House booking (Stone Foxes, String Cheese Incident, SSION, The Beths), and expect to announce tour dates soon. Written by music vet Richard Jankovich and performed by Michael Datz, Albert Kurniawan, Micah Lopez as well as Jankovich, Gusto, the forthcoming album from LA's Big Mother Gig, was originally going to be titled For Those About To Rock Bottom, a sarcastic reference to a rock band learning to sober up. Continuing with this creative thread, Big Mother Gig recorded the album that would go on to be mixed by Dan Long (Local Natives, Spiral Stairs) and mastered by the legendary Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Spoon, The White Stripes). While the focus is on Gusto, the Milwaukee-bred/LA-based band's legacy has come into view with two of its Nineties songs trending. “Beckers Note” is featured in hundreds of TikTok videos with over 4M views, while “This Picture” is featured in the critically acclaimed movie Pink Skies Ahead (Jessica Barden, Marcia Gay Harden, dir. Kelly Oxford), which premiered on MTV on May 8 alongside songs by Dinosaur Jr, Smashing Pumpkins and more.Previously, the band released their 2018 LP, No More Questions, while wrapping a West Coast tour opening for Gin Blossoms. The LP featured Dicky Barrett (Mighty Mighty Bosstones) and Britta Phillips (Luna) on vocals. It was praised by Brooklyn Vegan, NPR/The Current, Paste, The Big Takeover, Alternative Press, Under The Radar, No Depression and more. The band also hosted a six-episode web-series and their music video for “Obliterate” starred Sons Of Anarchy/Mayans actor Michael Ornstein. Since reforming in 2016, Big Mother Gig has performed with Gin Blossoms, Soccer Mommy, The Posies, Luna, Peelander-Z, Alvarez Kings, The Yawpers and more.We want to hear from you! We review the controversial Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage (directed by Garrett Price) out now on HBOMax.Boomer nostalgia meets nu metal in a fight where no one wins. The ceremonies took place in Rome, New York in 1999, three decades after the initial Woodstock festival. Seemingly small logistics issues roll into a massive (and literal) shitshow, sprinkled with arson, sexual assaults, and at least one fatality.Do Bill Simmons' and HBO lay the blame where it belongs, or are they re-exploiting these events for a quick payday two decades later? Our returning guest is Cory Sklar aka Chaki. Chaki is a funky alien wizard from Outer Space. With his unique take on electro funk, he has brought his weird ass stage show to festivals like Noise Pop and The Offbeat Fest. Chaki has shared the stage with like minded weirdos Peelander Z, El Vez, Bob Log III, Metalachi, Captured By Robots and The Oingo Boingo Dance Party. We also have first-time guest Adam Papagan, a comedian, public access producer, and candidate for California Governor.Follow Chaki on:Twitter: @chakifunkwizardFollow Adam on:Twitter: @adampapaganFollow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
My guest today is Daniel Schlett a Producer, Engineer, Mixer and owner of Strange Weather Studio seen on the cover of Mix Magazine in 2019 as one of the best rooms in Brooklyn NY. Daniel’s production finds itself at the creative intersection where acoustic and rock recording meets loop and edit based production. His discography ranges from NYC hip hop to live in-studio performances, to rock production from Mali with a clear sense of how each sounds best. Daniel has worked with many great artists including Iggy Pop, Booker T., Songhoy Blues, Peelander-Z, Ghostface Killah, War on Drugs, Luke Temple and Here We Go Magic, Combo Chimbita, The Lost Brothers. And I’ve been enjoying a fantastic sounding playlist of videos for you in the show notes. I’m psyched to talk with Daniel today about his philosophy of production with a wide range of musical styles and see what we can learn about working with a variety of artists. On a Saint Patrick’s Day long, long ago the might Letters to Voltron met Peelander-Z on the drunkest of all holidays! We were ready to kick ass, but not as ready for the panty-avalanche that followed. Also, stick with the basics with the Six of Swords on this week’s reading!
What does it take to be a game designer? Let's ask one of the most prolific game designers of all, Mike Selinker! Hello Beastsiders!! Today's episode is a grand return to our ongoing theme show series, THEMATIC For The People. The theme here is music from the Street Fighter video game series by CAPCOM. At the beginning of each set, you'll hear a remix of an SF composition---a lot of them covered in an interesting new musical style. These fanmade remixes do great tribute to the originals, and take the works in fantastic new directions. Follwing the remix tunes are original Beastly tunes (linked by genre similarity in each set) to make a fun, organic blend of music. Links for the artists are in the tracklist, and check out their wonderful work! Attention, Athens, Georgia! The weekend of March 19-22 will mark the 2nd annual Sling Shot Festival. Sling Shot's spread is all over the downtown Classic City district, with many venues featuring music artists (such as Kishi Bashi and local favorites Elf Power), stand-up comedians (Doug Benson of "Super High Me" and "Last Comic Standing" fame, Jonah Ray--who's been behind the scene on The Andy Milonakis show and featured on The Sarah Silverman Program, and Atlanta's own Josh Harris), technology/new media showcases, and fantabulous exhibitions of art. Of Beastly interest is the Saturday (3/21) event at New Earth Music Hall. That evening will be the site of the touchdown of the nationwide Japan Nite 2014 tour, featuring a fresh crew of musicians! Headliners are the ever-entertaining Peelander-Z, and also providing awesome sounds are Jungles (of Bacteria Vacuum), Zargani$, Vampillia, and HAPPY. You'll hear more about the JN show in this episode. Check www.japan-nite.com for times and dates, and locations near you for the upcoming shows. You'll hear the Polite one talk fanboy, giving you the lowdown on 2 fine comic book shop in the Athens/Watkinsville areas (Bizarro Wuxtry and Mr. Comic Shop), and mention a great site to find comic book stores in your area. If you're a DC Comics/Justice League fan, pop open a side link for the fantastic and Lego-tastic fan production, "Justice League: Gods Among Us" by the marvelous OUTBACKPRIME PRODUCTIONS. More on the project in this ep. Below is the tracklist for this episode, with links to the artists' sites/social media where highlighted. Beasts will now be running an episode EVERY OTHER MONTH, and we thank you for keeping up with us. More interviews and videos will be up in the meantime. You're already here and listening, so we hope you enjoy the show! Street Fighter = The title for great music and the importance of the quarter turn on your directional pad. FIGHT!!! This official hat trick mark of our podcast is a fresh new mix of styles, incorporating classical orchestras (covering video game music, no less), sprinklings of salsa and latino flavor, electro-pop, underground livehouse rock (courtesy of some performers from the IRO IRO bi-monthly event in Tokyo--hosted by our good promoter pal Tom Melesky), hip-hop, and remixed dance jams. The closer tune for today's show is from Murkdaddyflex, who's a trained instrumentalist, and a creative crate digger who offered up his tune "Java." There's some koto playing in the background near the 1:20 mark, and it's a sweet tune. All of his work is free for your downloading pleasure. His site is murkdaddy.flex.bandcamp.com Special thanks go out to T.O. Lawrence at Cinephiles Anon (cinephilesanon.com, http://www.flickr.com/photos/cinephilesanon/) for the cosplay pictures he took at Anime Weekend Atlanta back in September, and our roving reporter Zach Collins for the interview with Akabane Vulgars on Strong Bypass at the J-Pop Summit Festival in San Francisco. The night of this broadcast, MONO was rocking Atlanta's The Masquerade. You'll hear about Peelander-Z and Electric Eel Shock (both featured in today's set) doing the same in November at the Drunken Unicorn. There's some very big news out of the SAWA/SAWAS PHOOL camp, so tune in for the secret goodness! One of our newest connects represents the L.A. underground hip-hop universe, and his name is Key Kool. He's been around for a long time, and you'll hear a cut from his 1995 debut album with partner on the wheels of steel, DJ Rhettmatic, and it's remixed by none other than C-Arson, Califronia Waterproof MC himself, Ras Kass. Key Kool is the president of Up Above Records, an urban label with a deep roster of MCs, DJs, and producers. Of special note is the crew within them, The Visionaries. You'll hear more about the label, Key, and the rest of the crew in this podcast. It's the Friday after Halloween, which means we're all suffering from Type-2 diabetes and we recorded a new episode of Set to Jet! Your illustrious hosts Sean Riccio (KnoxComedy, Sword of the Stars II) and Jason Zapata (TVTropes.org) sit in with comedian Sean Alec Chidester to discuss technology, awesome bands, having the same name (sorry Jason) and how to kill somebody with a pineapple. Errata: * Bands mentioned today - MC Frontalot, The Protomen and one of my new favorites Peelander-Z. Check out this music video! You can also see the record of the livestream of MC Frontalot and the Protomen here. * The movie I was reaching for was Next, based of the Philip K. Dick story "The Golden Man". The less said about it, the better. * The Wicker Man, comedy of the year. * There's a show called Misfits. You should watch it. It's like Heroes if that show had British delinquints and didn't suck. * Here's that poster of Big Trouble in Little China from the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. * Food, Inc. * "Dobby? Dobby's a fucking fruit!" * Sword of the Stars II: Lords of Winter is finally out! You can get it through Steam, Impulse and GamersGate. Buy it and hear me do weird bug voices! * Related note, friend of the show Arinn Dembo's firsts SotS novel The Deacon's Tale is out from Kthonia Press. While many feel comfortable using canned or frozen Electro as their soup base, Destroyed For Comfort prefers to whip up their Electro from scratch, using fresh ingredients. We go heavy on the samples and are not afraid to spice things up in an unconventional way effects-wise, while mixing in traditionally enjoyed flavors like analog synth and 8-bit sounds. Fronted and founded by art-school dropout r*23 (Rani Bakr), DESTROYED FOR COMFORT utilizes both found sound and real-time synthesis to create stompy, noisy, sample-heavy 8-bit hacker-punk that never sounds quite the same way twice, or ever. Disorienting sonic textures and mangled vocals set the tone, complementing surprisingly danceable beats. Performances frequently include backup dancers and projected animation. Interested in meta-meme reprogramming and cheap beer. We'll play in your backyard if you ask us nicely enough. DESTROYED FOR COMFORT has been honored to share the stage with a veritable who's who of independent and experimental electronic music over the past decade, including (but not limited to) acts like Author And Punisher, Bozo Porno Circus, CeVin Key, Cry Blood Apache, The Emotron, Eric Archer, Femme Fatality, I Cactus, Juiceboxxx, Krista Muir, Ludivico Technique, Malekko, Martin Rev, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Otto Von Schirach, Peelander Z, Realicide, The Subliminator, Talmadge D'Amour, and Yip Yip. DESTROYED FOR COMFORT has also performed remix work for Houston Bernard, Suicide God Pill, and Christopher Anton, with more to come soon. DESTROYED FOR COMFORT has devoted several of their performances to benefits for non-profit, activist, and relief services such as the SIMS Foundation, Locks Of Love, The Livestrong Foundation, the Green Party, Anti-Racist Action, and the ACLU, as well as relief efforts for Katrina victims and the citizens of Darfur. We've also performed at benefits for independent music venues and the Texas Rollerderby jeerleader team Bomb Squad. The movement, the progression of thought. An unlimited outlook on the possibility of becoming whole. We communicate the view of the world as it is, what it has been, and what it could be with a true understanding of what it is to be free. Not an illusion of freedom. We are not free, we are all oppressed, oppressed by the history of humanity. Emily's Gone Mad has over time progressed changed and re invented themselves time and time again. We epitomize the idea of forward motion. We are not boasting to be arrogant we merely say this to inspire to an uncompromising principle to evolve to a perfectly chaotic conclusion. Emily's Gone Mad a band with an idea. Change our world express an idea of forward motion. This is who we are. NO genre. NO clique. Just music. A free expression of our hearts our minds, and our views of the world we live in. Nothing in art, music, literature, or life is unique. It is the idea behind the art that is the only thing unique. All chords have been played all things have been painted, everything has been written, we are all repeating what we know. The only way true uniqueness can be found is through exploring all avenues. That's what Emily's Gone MAd does. "We hold to nothing, but our will to explore. We mean what we write we live the life we have been given." Emilys Gone Mads Music is a solid expression of this mentality Emilys Gone Mad wraps their social views into an electric synth rock that has become EGM's signature sound. With over four albums written and two released their sound has evolved into a sound that is unique and distinct. EGM is a hark back to the core root of what Gothic,Industrial, Punk, and Glam was with a love of technology and all that it can achieve in music.
