The next generation of young leaders -- or, perhaps said more accurately, the incoming generation of young leaders -- gets leadership development and hands-on training from the annual summer project called City On The Hill. The Pennsylvania Family Institute brought together 57 high school and college students for worship, workshops and a simulation of a state senate session with debates and legislative proposals. This podcast features Part Two of our conversation with two of those participants, Jacob Reece and Amiya Montijo. In Part One, we focused on the activities of that week of Biblical worldview and leadership development. [ It aired 8/01/2024 on Family Life. Listen to, share or download it here. ] In this new interview, Greg Gillispie asks these guests about what is true for young people who have grown up in today's culture. They offer their personal perspectives of hope, reassurance and commitment, coming from today's Christian young adults. Jacob Reece is a pre-law student from Blandon, PA. He also interned this summer with PFI.  Amiya Montijo is a 2024 high school graduate. She has attended COTH across multiple summers. Information about the 2025 City On The Hill -- the 25th anniversary -- is available on their website.

Family Life news producer Greg Gillispie asked Geer to comment on the likely political fallout in Pennsylvania. Winning a majority of Keystone State voters is seen by both major political parties as a key to who will win the presidency this fall. Geer says the assassination attempt, plus the former president's actions in the immediate aftermath, are likely to influence a number of uncommitted and independent voters. Geer also offers a faith-based perspective on how, moving forward, this near-death experience is likely to affect the 45th president --- and many people for whom this event can be a significant turning point.

In this conversation, Gaines talks about the ways that Democratic politicians have "failed in their most basic duties". She faults the Biden administration for unilaterally rewriting the Title IX civil rights legislation which had opened opportunities for girls and women in education and athletics for more than half a century. Greg Gillispie also asked her about the disparities which start this fall, between how the NCAA and NAIA will deal with participation by athletes who were born male.   You can listen to Part One of our exclusive interview with Riley Gaines on the May 29 Family Life News Podcast.   More information about the Riley Gaines presentation in Cranberry Township (Friday, May 31) is available from the Pennsylvania Family Institute. Riley Gaines, Sports when XX and XY compete, and the lack of advocacy for the majority position   Women's sports advocate Riley Gaines says transgender inclusion in women's sports is supported by small numbers of Americans. She quotes a Gallup Poll showing more Democrats, Republicans, and Independents all see unfairness when someone born male takes away a roster position, a scholarship, or a sports record from a female athlete. Still the loudest voices are outshouting those majorities. In this first part of a two-part interview, Gaines tells Family Life News about the core issues at hand, and why women's sports should be set aside for women and girls. She also talks about Title IX, the Federal civil rights legislation which opened up educational and athletic opportunities for females starting more than 50 years ago.  She credits that women's-rights movement for opening fabulous doors for her. However, as the U.S. President tries to change Title IX to take away women's opportunities and give them to athletes who "identify as female", she notes that 20+ states are not going along with the Biden Administration efforts. You can listen to Part Two of our exclusive interview with Riley Gaines on the May 31 Family Life News Podcast.   More information about the Riley Gaines presentation in suburban Pittsburgh (Friday, May 31) is available from the Pennsylvania Family Institute. Riley Gaines won five Southeastern Conference swimming titles, and she is a twelve-time All American. Gaines set aside her dental career as she graduated from the University of Kentucky, after she tied for a trophy in a collegiate swimming competition, but that trophy went to a transgender athlete because an NCAA official decided that would make a better photo opportunity.  She is a commentator for the news site Outkick.com, travels the nation as a speaker and supporter of girls in sports and schools, and takes part in legal challenges and political events.

The so-called "Cancel Culture" seeks to silence divergent voices, and among those who are being squeezed are today's humorists. Comedy outlets -- from television shows to magazines to stand-up clubs to websites -- are facing increasing pressure to "toe the line" drawn by the "powers that be". One proponent of free speech is the leader of the satirical humor website The Babylon Bee. CEO Seth Dillon talks about political speech, social commentary, and the context of public dialogue in our culture. In this special Family Life Interview, Dillon tells about how The Bee was booted off of what was then called Twitter, after it posted a joke about a White House advisor. Dillon talks about: How humor is one of the best ways to speak the truth, especially when many others aren't Why many people -- with public roles or not -- have been frightened or shamed into silence The state of comedy today, and what it says about us Highlights of The Bee's absurd jokes ... which ended up becoming true, which he considers absurd. Why TV shows, writers and online comedians need to skewer the foibles of Democrats and Republicans and social movements of all types.   Seth Dillon says his experience with deplatforming and censorship has placed him on the front lines of the battle for free speech in the public square. In addition to owning and writing for The Bee, Dillon travels the country to speak at conferences and college campuses about the effectiveness of humor, the "moral imperative of mockery", and the dangers of silencing competing voices. Some of his videos are posted here. The website started as a Christian satire e-publication. Dillon is in Pennsylvania next week to speak at the "Friends of the Family" Banquet of the Pennsylvania Family Institute. His presentation is Monday, November 6, at Hershey.

Riley Gaines has been one of the prominent speakers on issues of trans-gender inclusion in women's sports. The University of Kentucky graduate put her grad school and future dental career on hold, and now travels the country to advocate for women's sports. She tells Family Life's Greg Gillispie that her message is not about personal attacks on people who transition to the opposite gender. Rather, she is standing up for safety, dignity and fairness among women and girls -- be that in single-sex locker rooms, athletic competition, and dangers when stronger trans athletes share the arena with women. Her advocacy extended beyond sports. She is concerned about men who swap genders going into women's prisons, safety and decorum in public restrooms, and the lack of truth expressed as this debate roars along. In this Family Life interview, she also previews her upcoming presentation at Hershey, Pennsylvania, on November 6 (well over 1,000 people are expected to attend). She talks about how her Christian faith has strengthened her calling. She tells how her identity from the Lord helped her face the opposition, cancellations and even a few confrontations she has experienced from those who hold other views.   Riley Gaines Barker won five SEC swimming titles and has been named an All-American 12 times. At a 2022 NCAA Championship, she tied (down to the exact 1/100th of a second) with swimmer Lia Thomas who was born male, and who shared a locker room with born-female athletes.  Thomas was awarded that trophy, despite the tie, because a meet official saw the occasion as an opportunity to support trans athletes succeeding in women's competitions. She has testified at the U.S. House and Senate, speaks to college audiences and state legislatures, and is a frequent guest on national and local media outlets. She also started a podcast on women's rights, sports, and faith. Riley Gaines commends to her supporters this report on Single-Sex Competition in American Sports in our time. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (10/24/2023): 3:05pm- Luke Broadwater, of The New York Times, writes: “Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the No. 3 House Republican, on Tuesday secured his divided party's nomination to be speaker, after five rounds of secret balloting to break a deadlock that has left Congress leaderless and paralyzed for three weeks. But the narrow margin of his victory reflected that House Republicans were still deeply at odds, and a swift backlash from the right, including from former President Donald J. Trump, suggested his candidacy was in peril. Immediately following his nomination, about two dozen right-wing Republicans indicated that they did not intend to vote for Mr. Emmer on the floor, denying him the majority he would need to succeed in a vote of the full House.” Emmer won the internal Republican vote 117 to 97. You can read Broadwater's full report here: https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/10/24/us/house-speaker-vote/house-speaker-election?smid=url-share 3:15pm- In response to Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) winning the Republican nomination for House speaker, Donald Trump posted to his Truth Social account: “I have many wonderful friends wanting to be Speaker of the House, and some are truly great Warriors. RINO Tom Emmer, who I do not know well, is not one of them. He never respected the Power of a Trump Endorsement, or the breadth and scope of MAGA—MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! He fought me all the way, and actually spent more time defending Ilhan Omar, than he did me—He is totally out-of-touch with Republican Voters. I believe he has now learned his lesson, because he is saying that he is Pro-Trump all the way, but who can ever be sure? Has he only changed because that's what it takes to win? The Republican Party cannot take that chance, because that's not where the America First Voters are. Voting for a Globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake!” 3:20pm- On Tuesday, House majority whip Tom Emmer was selected as the next Republican nominee for speaker. However, a decade ago, Emmer was an advocate for implementing a national popular vote—ostensibly eliminating the electoral college. Does this past advocacy disqualify him from the speakership? You can watch Emmer advocate for a national popular vote to determine the presidency in an August 2011 interview with Triad Strategies: https://vimeo.com/28012929 3:35pm- Henry plays horrific return music that gets Rich even more fired up—evidently Rich doesn't like T.L.C. What terrible return music will be selected next? 3:45pm- Hans von Spakovsky— Senior Legal Fellow in The Heritage Foundation's Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his latest piece in The Daily Signal, “Why is Google Protecting Harvard Defenders of Hamas Terrorism?” You can read the full article here: https://www.dailysignal.com/2023/10/23/why-is-google-protecting-harvard-defenders-of-hamas-terrorism/ 4:05pm- On Tuesday, House majority whip Tom Emmer was selected as the next Republican nominee for speaker. However, a decade ago, Emmer was an advocate for implementing a national popular vote—ostensibly eliminating the electoral college. Does this past advocacy disqualify him from the speakership? According to reports, as many as twenty-four Republicans are unwilling to vote for Emmer on the House floor, making it unlikely he will be able to acquire the 217 votes necessary to become the next House Speaker. You can watch Emmer advocate for a national popular vote to determine the presidency in an August 2011 interview with Triad Strategies: https://vimeo.com/28012929 4:15pm- In Federalist No.10, James Madison writes: “Liberty is to faction what air is to fire, an aliment without which it instantly expires. But it could not be less folly to abolish liberty, which is essential to political life, because it nourishes faction, than it would be to wish the annihilation of air, which is essential to animal life, because it imparts to fire its destructive agency.” Madison argues against a direct democracy—concluding that a representative republic allows for factionalism without the dangerously reactive outcomes that result in governmental instability. Rich argues that Rep. Tom Emmer's past advocacy for the abolition of the electoral college moves the United States closer to the problematic direct democracy that Madison warned about. 4:35pm- BREAKING NEWS: Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN)—the latest Republican nominee to fill the vacant House speakership—has withdrawn from the process. Earlier in the day, Emmer had won the nomination 117 to 97 after five rounds of balloting. Members of the House Freedom Caucus are calling for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) to, once again, become the Republican nominee for speaker. 4:55pm- On Tuesday, Jenna Ellis—a former attorney for Donald Trump—pleaded guilty to one charge of aiding and abetting false statements and writings regarding the 2020 presidential election. In a statement to the court, Ellis explained: “In the frenetic pace, attempting to raise challenges in several states including Georgia, I failed to do my due diligence. If I knew then what I know now, I would have declined to represent Donald Trump in these post-election challenges. I look back on this whole experience with deep remorse." 5:00pm- Michael Geer—Founding President and CEO of the Pennsylvania Family Institute—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss a disturbing new report which indicates that the Pennsylvania government has spent more than $20 million on gender reassignment surgeries, procedures, and drugs for minors through the state's health insurance program for children. "Faith Under Fire" Reaction continues to the Pennsylvania governor's decision to cut off state money from Real Alternatives, a network of pregnancy resource centers across the Commonwealth. Alexis Sneller, a policy analyst with the Pennsylvania Family Institute says previous governors -- Democrats and Republicans -- have been okay with those funds going to Planned Parenthood and to pro-life organizations. Sneller says Planned Parenthood of Pennsylvania has extensive and expensive lobbying efforts to shut down pro-baby options and to emphasize the only option Planned Parenthood favors for women and couples who come to them: abortion. In this interview, Sneller gives her take on why Planned Parenthood has been so active in befriending the new governor and lobbying Pennsylvania's lawmakers. She also talks about what Pregnancy Resource Centers offer to women, babies and families, during pregnancy and afterwards. She also talks about current trends among the general population in the state about support for and opposition to abortion.

Dobbs case overturns Roe v. Wade -- One-Year Later This past Saturday marked the one-year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.  By a 6-3 majority, the Court remanded decisions on abortion law back the state courts and state legislatures. The determination confirmed that any "right to abortion" is not a Constitutionally-mandated requirement related to privacy rights. In the year since, about half of the states have enacted some restrictions and oversight of the abortion industry, while the other half are enacting ways to help doctors end pregnancies via surgical or pharmaceutical means. For local Pennsylvania and New York perspectives on the pro-life movement a year after Dobbs, Family Life interviewed Alexis Sneller (a pro-life advocate with the Pennsylvania Family Institute in Harrisburg) and John Gramlich (board president at Caring Choices Pregnancy Centers of Rochester and Webster).              (Family Life News has also reached out to Planned Parenthood clinics in both states, for their perspectives on the anniversary of the end of Roe v.
