Today's show opens with someone we discussed just about a year ago who was alleged to be spying for Iran – Ariane Tabatabai. For some reason, she is still around and is now embroiled in another possible leak of Israel attack plans to Iran. But, as my good friend Wendy Patterson reminds us, there are many other Iranian sympathizers in the current White House, many of who were initially hired during the Barack Obama regime. One of those is Maher Bitar, who is not only a Palestinian sympathizer, but also a former member of UNRWA. Nathan Wade, former attorney on the big Fani Willis RICO case in Georgia against Donald Trump and 18 others was in Washington, D.C. last week to testify before the House Judiciary Committee. The transcripts were just released and it looks like he confirmed what we've all known since November 18, 2022 – that the White House was colluding and coordinating all of the lawfare attacks. Our trust in Legacy/mainstream media has been falling to all-time lows for Republicans and Independents, while hovering at around 54% for Democrats. But, just like with the one debate, the Harris-Walz campaign is aware that Independents keep siding with Republicans. Maria Shriver let us all know that all of the questions at the recent “town hall” were all predetermined, thus Harris had her pre-memorized answers ready to go. Unfortunately, the answers are all sounding repetitive and contrived now that she has been forced into the public eye. Turns out, Harris didn't just plagiarize sections of her 2009 book. Aaron Sibarium with the Washington Free Beacon discovered she stole whole speeches from DA Paul Logli of Winnebago County, IL and used them as her own words when testifying before the House Judiciary Committee in April of 2007. Just about everything about her is manufactured and fake. Tulsi Gabbard just reminded all of us that in 2019 she warned the American people about Harris. Specifically, Gabbard is worried she will use the military to prove how tough she is in order to overcome her own insecurities. While on the topic of the military, we have more about Tim “Stolen Valor” Walz. An intrepid former paratrooper noticed Tim sporting the Expert badge on his uniform. However, there is no indication on his DD-214 that he ever qualified for the lowest rifle competency score, let alone the highest. Yet another lie from Tim Walz. Norah O'Donnell gave us a wonderful example of how the Legacy/mainstream media really is the propaganda wing of the Democrat Party. See if you can hear the subtle differences in how she discusses both campaigns. Finally, I tell a story of Donald Trump shooting a commercial back in 2009, well before running for office. Regardless of what you think of his personality, he is genuine and real. That's a lot more than you can say about Harris. Aaron Sibarium discusses the downfall of former Harvard President Claudine Gay on the latest episode of Just Asking Questions.
Welcome back to the Ann & Phelim Scoop. On today's show, we announce our first project of 2024 - a new verbatim podcast covering the battle between Mark Steyn and Michael Mann. It will be called Climate Change: On Trial. This case is the defamation and free speech trial of the century. But first, we begin the episode with an LA Times story about Hollywood's latest golden couple. No, it's not A-list celebrities. It's just Hunter Biden and his sleazy lawyer, Kevin Morris. We, however, bring you the true story of the relationship between Biden and Morris in a lot fewer words. And in not-so-shocking news, we report that Pennsylvania has learned absolutely nothing since the conviction of abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell. Dan Bartkowiak of the Pennsylvania Family Institute joins us to discuss the state of abortion in Pennsylvania. Additionally, Colorado's latest environmental scheme will have you howling, quite literally. We also show how your tax dollars are going to support the families of martyrs, or, terrorists who spent their last days killing Jews. Last but not least, we also speak to a reporter, Aaron Sibarium of the Washington Free Beacon, who had a large part in bringing down Harvard president Claudine Gay. We discuss what this all means for the future of destructive DEI policies and journalism. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit public.substack.comRight-wing activists are responsible for the resignation of Harvard's president, Claudine Gay, say mainstream news media organizations. “Harvard president's resignation highlights new conservative weapon against colleges: plagiarism,” read the Associated Press headline. Politico attributed Gay's resignation to a “conservative activist's crusade.” Both the New York Times and Washington Post published pieces suggesting that Gay resigned her position because of conservative pressure. And many other commentators suggested that racism played a role in Gay's departure. But there is clear evidence of plagiarism in eight of Gay's 17 published works, and the fact that conservatives rather than liberals first made the allegations likely made Harvard's famously liberal board of trustees less, not more, reluctant to take action. Moreover, the argument that Gay was treated differently than other university presidents is contradicted by the resignation of Stanford's president last summer after the student newspaper and a subsequent investigation by the university uncovered evidence of falsified data in his published work. It's true that other issues may have affected the decision by Gay to leave. Conservatives had criticized Gay and the presidents of MIT and the University of Pennsylvania after they testified to Congress about how they were handling anti-Israel student protests, and one of them, Penn's president, resigned. It was conservative journalists Chris Rufo, Christopher Brunet, and Aaron Sibarium who published the stories about Gay's plagiarism. And Brunet had first leveled some of the criticisms at Gay in April 2022, and they were largely ignored until her Congressional testimony in December of last year. But Gay had survived the controversy over her testimony to Congress, and it's far from clear that Gay would still be president had the plagiarism accusations been made by mainstream or progressive sources instead of conservative ones. “Our extensive deliberations affirm our confidence that President Gay is the right leader to help our community heal and to address the very serious societal issues we are facing,” the Harvard Corporation said in a statement a few days after her testimony. The bottom line is that Harvard's own code strictly prohibits plagiarism, which also violates the university's core mission to pursue the truth, and there was simply too much of it for Harvard to wave away.To the extent the episode revealed prejudice, it was in Harvard's selection of Gay in the first place. Her scholarly record is below-average compared both to past Harvard presidents and to current Harvard professors. Her career as an administrator consisted of trying to get Harvard faculty, staff, and students to embrace an Orwellian glossary of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) terms, which required embracing pseudoscientific, reductive, and dehumanizing views of race and racism. Those malign ideas include: race essentialism, the notion that racial stereotypes do or should determine one's life outcomes; race exaggeration, the view that racial prejudice is the most significant factor and that it's embedded in laws and institutions; and racial segregation, the idea that it's better to divide people by race in schools, in the workplace, and in politics, as Boston's mayor recently did.The underlying problem with DEI is its imposition of what can accurately be described as a totalitarian language, culture, and politics on universities. It is authoritarian in that if you run afoul of it, as Harvard economist Roland Fryer did, the DEI leaders of the institution will punish you, as Gay did. But in their demand to change how people speak and think, and by inserting themselves into every aspect of life, advocates of DEI slip into the totalizing, “whole of society” approach that characterized past totalitarian episodes.

Aaron Sibarium is a recent graduate of Yale University (2018) and journalist who writes for the Washington Free Beacon. He joins the podcast to discuss his work covering identity politics issues from a conservative perspective, along with his dream of eventually synthesizing his reporting with his own opinion writing. Aaron and Richard share many of the same frustrations with right-wing media and conservative journalism. They discuss the problems of the conservative movement, including it being prone to misinformation, a lack of interest in policy specifics, mindless tribalism, and the role of differences in intelligence between conservatives and liberals who go into activism and reporting. Aaron argues that the Republican Party might be suffering from an excess of democracy through its primary system, which warps the incentive structures politicians face.Listen in podcast form or watch the video on YouTube.Links:* Richard Hanania, “Liberals Read, Conservatives Watch TV.”* Richard Hanania, “Conservatism as an Oppositional Culture.”* Richard Hanania, Tweet on liberal institutions rallying around removing a school dress code in the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.* Aaron Sibarium, “Food and Drug Administration Guidance Drives Racial Rationing of COVID Drugs.”* Institutionalized Podcast with Aaron Sibarium and Charles Fain Lehman. “The whole premise of the American legal system is that everyone—no matter how unpopular—deserves legal representation. John Adams famously defended the British soldiers accused of the Boston Massacre. And he said it was one of the greatest things he ever did for the fledgling Republic that he helped found. And that ethos is just not there to the same degree today.” Was the Supreme Court draft ruling leak indicative of a broader shift in America's legal institutions? I sit down with Aaron Sibarium, a writer for the Washington Free Beacon and the former opinion editor of Yale Daily News. He's been researching how law schools have been impacted by woke ideology. “Law schools have, for many years, been graduating the sorts of people who believe that long-standing legal norms perpetuate oppression and that we are justified in suspending them in order to solve various moral emergencies,” Sibarium says. How will this ideological shift impact America's legal systems long-term? Hank Hanegraaff, president of the Christian Research Institute and host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, reflects on an article by Aaron Sibarium, “The Takeover of America's Legal System.” Sibarium writes, “At Boston College Law School this semester, a constitutional law professor asked students: ‘Who does not think we should scrap the constitution?' According to a student in the class, not a single person raised their hand.” Why? Because truth is no longer as important as virtue signaling. Sibarium goes on to report that “Last year, NASDAQ demanded that companies listing shares on its exchanges meet racial and gender quotas.” And “Lawyers at top law firms in New York, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles said they fret constantly about saying the wrong thing—or taking on the wrong client.” As such, “Religious liberty cases” are “totally off the table.” The reality is that “progressives have set about repurposing the law.” Even “the principle that one is innocent until proven guilty” seems to be in question. “At stake…is the American justice system itself.” Justice no longer being about the equal application of the law as much as about “the preferences of those in power. In this week's episode, we were joined by our friend Aaron Sibarium, a reporter for the Washington Free Beacon. Aaron recently reported a piece showing how three states were rationing COVID drugs on race-based criteria. The article made a splash. Fox News covered the story, Trump referenced it in a speech (sloppily as always), and Twitter tried to rebrand it as a right-wing talking point. Prioritizing woke ideology over medical realities can cost lives. But we tried to stay true to the Wisdom of Crowds ethos and made our best faith effort to ask whether race-based triage can ever be justified on practical or philosophical grounds. Is this the result of good intentions going off the rails, or is something more sinister at work? Part 2 of our conversation is available here. With Aaron playing referee, Damir tries to use "wokeness" to get Shadi to denounce leftism. While explaining how his affinity for Bernie intersects with his views on cultural progressivism, Shadi slips up and uses one of Damir's trigger words–progress. Chaos ensues. Subscribe now Give a gift subscription Share Recently Yale Law School (YLS) student Trent Colbert wrote Why I Didn't Apologize For That Yale Law School Email: We must end the culture of performative repentance for Persuasion. I was broadly familiar with the culture-war saga that Colbert was caught up in, having read a piece a few weeks ago in The Washington Post describing how a seemingly innocent and jocular email triggered accusations of racism at YLS (as well as Aaron Sibarium's piece in The Washington Free Beacon). Colbert's in Persuasion made me curious about him, and I reached out to talk about what he had seen, and the lessons that we as a society and individuals might take from it. First, Colbert gives us his own perspective of what transpired at YLS to make him a “trending topic” on social media. Perhaps to the surprise of Millennials, the 23-year-old Zoomer seemed not entirely familiar with the well-known podcast Chapo Trap House. As a member of Gen X, I have to admit it's a little unnerving to hear Millennials viewed as geriatric elders. But Colbert grew up in a world of super-charged cultural change and perhaps perceives the passage of time differently than those of us who came into adulthood before smartphones. He contended that some of the offense others perceived might be a matter of cohort differences and even just his casual Zoomer manner. Even a few years' difference today might mean an entirely alternative landscape of memes and sensibilities, so a subtle and wry reference among his age-mates could strike an individual only a few years older as offensive, opaque and “tone-deaf.” With that in mind, I was curious about his background, and where he got the strength to stand up to the YLS administrative bureaucracy. We explored his relationship to his Cherokee background, as well as growing up in a moderately conservative household where religion was important. Colbert takes the idea of right and wrong seriously, and he felt that his own conscience would not allow him to agree to an apology that was premised on lies. Importantly, he also had a supportive group of friends at YLS and a wider circle of backers in the community. Eventually, we moved to broader social forces, and how his individual choices and decisions might impact others. By doing the right thing, rather than the easy thing, Colbert hopes to show that it is possible to defeat the kind of bureaucratic machine that was unleashed upon him and trigger a preference cascade that changes the culture on campus. And doing the right thing has not been entirely easy, as Colbert admits to being uncomfortable with realizing how others at YLS viewed him purely through a racial lens, as well as the fact that many prominent organizations accused him of being a racist. Overall, perhaps the take-home lesson is that it doesn't take an exceptional person to take on the system. Just someone who has a core set of principles and friends and family who support them when they might have to make decisions that lead to socially unpopular outcomes. In the Hold my Drink — navigating culture with a chaser of civility, and Counterweight podcast, Episode 48, we speak with Aaron Sibarium. Aaron first addressed our country's growing polarization while covering issues such as “Halloweengate” at Yale. He now carries on what he started as a journalist for the Washington Free Beacon exposing the inner machinations of ideologues in our institutions. He shares with us his investigations on both private school and law school accreditation practices and proposals that jeopardize the free market of ideas, not to mention the rule of law, and the latest ideological policy agenda of the CDC. All discussed with a chaser of civility, of course, and a shot of Fireball whiskey and memories of cold sake.
