Episode 47 of season 5 aired at 19h00 on 254 Nov 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio.  I was worried the wifi wouldn't hold up with the load-shedding, but we made it.  The show kicked off with an old TSORR favourite called 'Tres Borrachos' by Left Lane Cruiser.  From there we took a listen to the perennial rock classic that is ‘Hair of the Dog.  Nevada Beach were up next with a track called ‘Hollywood.  Hank Decken is the main man in Nevada Beach, on guitar and vocals.  We will be taking a closer look at Hank in weeks to come because there are a lot of unsung heroes in the rock ‘n' roll business and I reckon Hank may be one of them.  We checked out two blues giants, Rory Gallagher and Philip Sayce, but listened to less bluesy tracks for a change.  Philip may have been a bit mellow for the early stages of the show so we ramped up a gear with Black Spiders and ‘KISS  Tried to Kill Me'.  Going back to Philip Sayce for a second, make sure you check out the solo at the end, it proves my theory that the songs are just vehicles for solos like this.   We changed pace with Black Spiders and a track called ‘KISS tried to kill Me' off their critically acclaimed (by me) album Sons of the North.  The new Soilwork is a really good album and we listened to ‘Death, I Hear You Calling'.  You may be aware I am a huge fan of Matthew Good Bands' early work so we took a listen to ‘Carmelina' off the Audio of Being album.  Brian Fallon's ‘My Name Is the Night' kept things tidy and then we floored it with In Flames and Parkway Drive.   From there we moved to an all-time South African classic by No Friends of Harry, you guessed it the one and only ‘Competition Rules'.  Wilko Johnson passed away yesterday, as a RIP we played 'Going Back Home' the title track of the album he did with Roger Daltrey back in 2014.  Wilko was a founder member of Dr. Feelgood with vocalist Lee Brilleaux.  Dr. Feelgood were often cited as a big influence by the UK Punk era bands such as The Jam and The Clash, so we checked out both with ‘Art School' and ‘Drug-Stabbing Time'.  Then it was back to the stuff like The White Stripes and The Bottle Rockets.  The Bottle Rockets track 'Radar Gun' sent me off on a little tirade about the police in South Africa.  We went back to South Africa for a brand new track from the uber-talented Mark Haze and then we checked out some more Diverted Disorder.  The boys from the Vaal are doing good things, the album launch is this weekend.  From Diverted Disorder we heard The Cars, I shit you not, The Cars on TSORR!.  Why?  because it's a great song, and that is why.  I totally ran out of time, we squeezed in (or is it squoze :-))? Boston, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, and a brand new track from Disturbed.   We finished off with an eight min plus live epic from Black Label Society called 'Stillborn'.  Thanks for listening, comments welcome, catch TSORR on the website or Facebook page.   Artists featured:  Left Lane Cruiser, Nazareth, Nevada Beach, Rory Gallagher, Philip Sayce, Black Spiders, Soilwork, Tremonti, KISS, Matthew Good Band, Brian Fallon, In Flames, Parkway Drive, No Friends of Harry, ZZ Top, Wilko Johnson & Roger Daltrey, The Jam, The Clash, The Cult, The White Stripes, The Bottle Rockets, Texas Hippie Coalition, Joe Lynn Turner, Black Sabbath, ACDC, Motor Sister, Killit, Mark Haze, Diverted Disorder, The Cars, Bad Company, Boston, Def Leppard, Red Beans & Pepper Sauce, Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, Disturbed, Black Label Society.   The Story of Rock and Roll. Tom Grennan is a Bedford boy done good. With a flair for football, he pursued a professional career in his teens until the competition proved too stiff. Taking stock, Tom decided to give his other gift a shot. He began gigging around London and got spotted in a pub by a record label. His songs ‘A Little Bit of Love' and ‘By Your Side' (with Calvin Harris) were the second and third most played tracks of 2021 and his new tune ‘All These Nights' is out now. As Tom is pescatarian, Angela plated up some delicious hake with a roast red pepper sauce made with love by our novice chef Nick. Round the table, Tom tries an olive for the first time, shares his unconventional mash potato recipe and if you thought Grimshaw's G-Wagon story was good (James May episode) ...wait till you hear what happened to Tom's brand new wheels. Just so you know, our podcast might contain the occasional mild swear word or adult theme. A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes We can't all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help. D and L Coffee Service Inc. presents Small Bites Radio the #1 listed “Food Radio show Philadelphia” and #1 listed “Food Radio show South Jersey”. Small Bites on Wildfire Radio returns this Sunday, August 8th at 635pm EST with a fantastic lineup! #SmallBitesRadio has been named #14 out of the Top 30 Best Hospitality Shows on the planet for 2020 and 2021 as well as being named #23 Top Philadelphia Lifestyle Influencer in 2021. In the mood to party? Everyone is invited to a 21st birthday celebration to enjoy a nice adult beverage. The beverage of choice and the epic 21st Anniversary Party is being thrown by 21st Amendment Brewery. We will chat with Co-Founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O'Sullivan about the party at the brewery and about how 21st Amendment Brewery releases a new 21st Anniversary West Coast IPA in 33 states across the country in tribute to the hottest beer style that defined the brewing scene. Established in 2000, 21st Amendment brewpub in San Francisco's historic South Park neighborhood quickly became one of the city's favorite pubs. 21st Amendment began expanding beyond the Bay Area by helping to pioneer the movement to canned craft beer. Known for their witty names and delicious brews, 21st Amendment offers year-round selections, as well as seasonal offerings and their infamous once-in-a-while limited-edition releases. Sold in 33 states plus Washington D.C., 21st Amendment produces beer in its state-of-the-art brewery headquarters in San Leandro, California and is among the top 50 craft beer brewers in America. Then we will be joined by Fred and Perteet McSween Spencer, Co-founders of AYO Foods bringing authentic West-African Cuisine to U.S. grocers with their homemade frozen food line being in nearly 50 Whole Foods Market locations. Also the company just launched their new hot sauce line which will be carried by 1200 grocery stores across the US making it accessible to those who love to explore and enjoy ethnic foods. AYO, which means joy in Yoruba, features nutrient-dense, flavor-rich, frozen entrees that are conveniently packaged and now all of their dishes can be spiced up even more with their new West African Shito Sauce and Pepper Sauce being added to their product line. Last but certainly not least, Richard Massi the President and Co-Founder of Fight On Makenna Foundation will tell us about the 2021 Bite for the Fight Food Festival happening on Saturday, September 25th. The Fight on Makenna Foundation was created in the memory of his 14 year old daughter Makenna who lost her battle with leukemia in September 2018. The Fight on Makenna Foundation's mission is to improve the quality of life for kids and families facing pediatric cancer. In their two short years of existence, they have raised over $200K to help fund programs in partnership with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to help kids and families as they deal with the rigors of cancer treatments. Makenna was a foodie (mostly carnivore) and loved friends, family, the Food Network, and the Philadelphia Eagles. So they created Bite for the Fight to showcase some of the best food, beer, wine, and spirits in the Philadelphia Area. Makenna was a fighter to the end of her short life and they brought that competitive spirit to the festival by allowing the restaurants to compete for the honor of the Best Bite voted on by the patrons of the festival. The 2019 event was even attended by Chef Robert Irvine. You say you STILL NEED MORE!!! Don't forget we still have our regular weekly segments from author, Courier-Post nightlife correspondent and The New York Times recognized blogger John Howard-Fusco for foodie news of the week, Chef Barbie Marshall who is a Chef Gordon Ramsay Hell's Kitchen Season 10 finalist and has appeared on Season 17 of FOX Hell's Kitchen #AllStars as well named Pennsylvania's most influential chef by Cooking Light will delight us with her observation of the week, highly acclaimed and respected Vegan Chef Christina Martin will delight with her ‘Healthy Bite' of week giving nourishing and wholesome advice, and a joke of the week from legendary joke teller Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling of The Howard Stern Show fame. Ingredients 1 lb. chicken breast about 4 slices (1/2 inch thick) 2 tbsp. olive oil 1/4 cup vegetable broth 1/2 medium onion 2 garlic cloves, minced 12 oz. jar of roasted peppers, divided 1/2 cup full-fat coconut milk or cream 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan 1 handful spinach 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes optional 1 tsp. paprika or to taste 1/2 tsp. salt or to taste Instructions Puree 6 oz. of roasted pepper in a smoothie cup, or with a hand chopper, until smooth. Chop the remaining 6 oz. of peppers. Set aside. Season the chicken with salt and paprika. Add about 2 tablespoons oil to a large non-stick skillet. When it's hot, add the chicken and fry for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until just cooked through. Remove the chicken from the skillet. To the same skillet, add the onions and garlic. Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes and then add the vegetable or chicken broth. Keep cooking until the liquid evaporates and the onions soften nicely. Add the chopped and pureed peppers. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 7-10 minutes, until it starts looking thicker, and the roasted peppers sweeten. Reduce the heat to low. Add the coconut milk, Parmesan, and spinach. Stir and bring to a gentle simmer. Return the chicken to the skillet, cover it with the sauce, and simmer for 1 minute. Sprinkle some Parmesan on top. Serve.

Ep. 4 | Andre Springer: Founder of the World's First Drag Queen Hot Sauce, Shaquanda's Hot Pepper Sauce

The True Beauty Brooklyn Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 16, 2020 65:50

I’m actually so excited to come back from our hiatus to this episode of The True Beauty Brooklyn Podcast. As Alix and I listened to this interview in preparing to record, we realized that there are things that our incredible guest, Andre Springer recalls that are so striking, and a little haunting considering the timing of the COVID-19 crisis. Andre is the artist behind what we consider the personification of your favorite Auntie, Shaquanda, and the co-founder of the consumer goods company, Shaquanda’s Hot Pepper Sauce. You guys will see what we mean, in that Andre first really started working on his Drag character, Shaquanda during the first financial crisis of our millennial lives, back in 2008. As we listened to this episode, we remembered what it was like during the first times of uncertainty in our adult lives, and how it forced creativity in our generation. The loving, endearing, funny, and beautiful drag character Shaquanda was first created by Andre back in the early 2000’s. As you’ll hear, she was resurrected after the Great Recession when he returned to New York from California and began working in restaurants and nightlife. At the time there weren’t many jobs available, especially within the creative and luxury industries that he had always worked in. When he met his first drag mentor, Linda Simpson host of Gay Jeopardy, a spark was ignited. He was inspired to focus, fusing his creativity, his incredibly friendly and loving personality, the pride of his heritage with the love of his City, and hone his artistic, and design skills. The result is not only a character for the stage, but a consumer goods product to line the shelves of our grocery stores. The logo of brand includes the image of a beautiful, gender-fluid, brown drag queen, sporting the friendliest wide-mouthed smile that you can’t help but smile back at. In our episode Andre is brilliant enough to speak on the importance of equity and equality, (can I get an amen?), the importance of kindness, empathy and of course, representation. You might be thinking, why does representation matter? Off the top of your head, name an American food brand character. HINT: it’s not good when you can name 7 make-believe creatures, and talking animals before you can name a person of color on a food box.I hope that his story is what some of you need to hear today! I think we can all take the message that Andre’s story tells to heart. Now more than ever, we all need to believe in ourselves 100%, even if we don’t know what the road ahead looks like. Just like Andre! Please visit our new site at www.truebeautybrooklynpodcast.com and email us your questions and comments at truebeautybrooklynpodcast@gmail.com visit https://shaquandawillfeedyou.com/ for more information on Andre and to purchase Shaquanda's Hot Pepper Sauce

Few brands invoke immediate recognition, respect and fervor like TABASCO. Since 1868, the legendary hot sauce and its multiple condiment varieties have been produced exclusively by the family-owned McIlhenny Company of Avery Island, Louisiana. We catch up with John Simmons, Senior Manager of Agriculture for TABASCO, who also happens to be a member of the sixth generation of the McIlhenny family involved in the company. He grew up working the pepper fields, coopering barrels and learning all there is to conjuring TABASCO’s magic. John’s direct responsibilities are the agricultural operations--domestically and internationally--the making of TABASCO Sauce, new product development and the company’s sustainability efforts. We then travel all the way back to Snacky Tunes episode #198 and the summer of 2014 to re-visit pedal steel guitar virtuoso Jonny Lam and his band, Honeyfingers. Over the years, Jonny’s been an in-demand player working with the likes of David Byrne, Norah Jones, Billie Joe Armstrong, EmmyLou Harris, Busta Rhymes, Benny Blanco, Keb Mo, Sean Paul, Steve Earle, Pharaoh Sanders, The Blind Boys of Alabama and more. Honeyfingers gave us a live performance of their signature country jazz and western swing sound, and also did a cover of Ray Price’s No. 1 hit, “Crazy Arms.” It was the first time we’ve ever had a pedal steel guitarist on the show, and seeing the instrument up close was amazing.
