319: New Trail Runner's Guide (Northeast Edition) Are you a road runner looking to start trail running, a hiker intent on picking up your pace, or an experienced trail running veteran who is curious to see if you could pick up a new idea? This episode covers the Trail Running Basics, the Northeast Regional specifics, trail etiquette and safety, training & fitness and even gives some pro tips on pooping in the woods. Trail Running basics answers the questions of what gear do I need to start trail running, how to find out where to run, what the differences are from road running, how to choose between road shoes and trail shoes, and what are some of the essential items you should consider carrying on a trail run. We cover some of the Northeast Regional specifics of running on these explicit and raw trails and mention a few of the most iconic spots to run in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Maine. (Although we don't offer any Gator safety tips) In trail etiquette & safety we discuss concepts and strategies of basic navigational safety such as “The Playpen”. What to do if you encounter a bear, rattlesnake, or perhaps the greatest threat, the dreaded tick. What are the best colors to wear or avoid, like “don't shoot me orange” or “hi I'm a deer's ass white”. We also talk briefly about training and fitness and how to deal with hills, and the many ways of connecting with the trail community and many of the trail running clubs in the Northeast.  Then we talk shit! Is it permissible to adjust a child's highchair on Shabbat, which often entails removing and then inserting a peg, or to assemble a child's playpen on Shabbat? Chacham Bentzion Abba Shaul (Jerusalem, 1924-1998), in his work Or Le'tziyon, Helek 2, 27:1, writes that highchairs are made to be frequently adjusted, and one generally does not make a point of inserting the pegs tightly in their positions when adjusting a highchair. Therefore, highchairs fall under the category addressed by the Shulchan Aruch (313:6) of articles that are assembled through the loose connection of various components. The Shulchan Aruch writes that since the parts are assembled loosely, this assembly does not constitute "Boneh" (building) and is thus permissible on Shabbat. Hence, Chacham Bentzion rules, one may adjust a highchair on Shabbat, since the adjustment entails merely the loose, temporary assembly of the various parts. He applies this ruling also to playpens, which are intended for frequent assembly and disassembly. By the same token, Chacham Bentzion rules that one may add or remove a leaf from a table on Shabbat. These leaves are made to be frequently inserted and removed, and people are generally not careful to insert the leaf forcefully and tightly. This therefore does not entail "building," and it is entirely permissible on Shabbat. Summary: It is permissible on Shabbat to adjust a highchair, assemble or dissemble a playpen, and insert or remove a leaf of a table.

Born in Lima, Peru, Jaime Zevallos moved to New York at the age of three and grew up in both Queens and Great Neck, Long Island prior to moving to Los Angeles Jaime's artistic side was evident from an early age, and he spent his teenage years as an infamous street artist. He started his acting career in New York while studying acting at HB Studio and film at C.W. One of the Toledot (corollaries) of the Melacha of Boneh (Building) is making an Ohel (overhanging). One application of this issue is opening a portable crib or playpen. Generally, the crib is unfolded, forming four walls and then the board or mattress is placed on top. Does this constitute a prohibition of making an Ohel on Shabbat? Of course, there is no issue in those types of cribs where the mattress board is attached as an integral part of the walls. Interestingly, Maran (315:3-4) deals with a similar case of setting up a bed made of four walls. He rules that it is permitted to assemble such a bed with a Shinui (unusual manner): First holding the mattress board in place and then assembling the frame underneath. This leniency is based on the fact that making an Ohel is only prohibited when the intent is to form a shelter over a functional space. In the case of the bed and the crib, the mattress board serves as a base for the person on top of it; there is no use for the space created underneath. Therefore, the Menuhat Ahaba (Vol. 2, p. 194, Halacha 21) and most Poskim are lenient. However, the Ben Ish Hai (Shanah Sheniya, Parashat Shemot, Halacha 6), adopts the ruling of the Taz that it is prohibited to lay a board on any structure with four walls, since the space underneath is potential fit to serve a function, as it is an enclosed "private" space. SUMMARYIt is permitted to assemble a crib or playpen on Shabbat.
