Kat is joined by Seema Menon, who shares her journey from being a ‘constantly on’ sales director to discovering the transformative power of mindfulness and balance. She discusses her experiences leading at Sony Pictures and completing marathons, challenging the "busy culture" mindset while offering practical ideas for sustainable high performance. This episode also features surprising statistics about productivity and includes a compelling discussion on why the simplest solutions are often the most effective. KEY TAKEAWAYS Rather than making life easier, technology has created a "scarcity mindset" where we feel compelled to work harder and achieve more, leading to chronic stress and burnout. Small, sustainable changes like five minute meditation breaks or mindful walking can have more impact than dramatic lifestyle overhauls, making them more likely to stick and create lasting positive change. The cost of burnout extends far beyond work performance, affecting relationships, health, and finances, with some people taking years to recover from severe burnout. Businesses are seeing more silent resignations and decreased efficiency due to the "always on" culture, particularly in hybrid work environments where boundaries between work and personal life have blurred. Intentional congruence - combining activities like walking meetings, can help integrate mindfulness into busy schedules without feeling like it’s wasted time. Morning routines incorporating exercise or mindfulness can boost workplace productivity by up to 72%, while quality sleep can increase productivity by 29%. Seema's practice of mindfulness made her more aware of others' challenges, transforming her leadership style to become more empathetic and supportive of team members. BEST MOMENTS "Nobody's going to say that I wish I did that extra one hour of work and got that additional deal for that organisation. It would always be regret about not having spent enough time with their children." "Every time you look at the clock, bring a smile to your face, you're alive and kicking." "We get so caught up in this trap of work and careers... What are your children going to remember? What are your partners, your family, your friends going to remember?” "You don't have to always be the Iron Man or the superwoman... just be yourself and just be kind." ABOUT THE GUEST Seema has over 19 years diverse experience in Broadcast Media and Entertainment predominantly in Advertising Sales. Her previous role as Region Head of Sales, Sony Pictures Network entailed leading teams across multiple geographies with revenue generation responsibilities. Seema has had a stint in technology (Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning) at SparkBeyond, UK, an AI scale-up, as Impact Strategist (EMEA). At present, she pursues her entrepreneurial venture as a Coach, Mentor and Keynote Speaker, conducting various Apperceptive programs with Headstride Ltd. Seema remains immersed in her Leadership roles at Toastmasters International, as a Mentor at The Prince's Trust and at CSO UK as a Steering Committee Member. LinkedIn ABOUT THE HOST Kat started her career as a teacher, before moving into Tech where she worked in different executive roles within teaching and consulting working across the globe, both in the public and private sector. Despite appearing 'successful' on the outside, she paid a heavy ‘life’ price. In 2016, her whole world collapsed. The reason? The compound effect of years of unhealthy and toxic habits that destroyed her health, relationship and career. She suffered a severe breakdown and lost everything. In the middle of this she got headhunted for her first CEO role. She rebuilt herself by changing just one small habit, and built a series of positive habits which has transformed her professional and personal performance, resulting in becoming the healthiest and happiest version of herself. She is a positive habits international keynote speaker and teacher, giving talks and delivering high impact programmes to organisations across the globe. LinkedIn Instagram

This hour, photo and video journalist Yehyun Kim joins us to discuss A Diaspora in Focus, a three-part project she launched for the Connecticut Mirror in 2023. The project was in response to landmark legislation passed in the state that will require public schools to offer Asian American and Pacific Islander, or AAPI, history. Yehyun interviewed and photographed one resident from each of the 21 Asian ethnicities as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, and this included our very own Catherine Shen. This hour, she joins us to discuss this moving series for the Connecticut Mirror. As Yehyun explained, "It would be impossible for any single project to capture the totality of the Asian American experience in the state. But, when woven together, the lives of the people represented here provide a glimpse into the richness and diversity of Connecticut's Asian residents." Jenny Heikkila Díaz, or JHD, also joins us, to discuss their role in the photo project, as well as the state's AAPI curriculum development. He has authored and contributed to most of its governance and assurance publications. As a hands-on crypto and cybersecurity consultant and auditor, Scott provides deep and impactful advice that you would expect from a leader in the field. About Podcast Episode In this podcast episode with Scott, we discuss these topics: In digital trust infrastructure, these “rules” are formally known as a governance framework (GF). A core thesis of ToIP architecture is that interoperability of GFs is just as important—if not more so—than interoperability of the technical protocols. Why? Can you replicate, or codify existing physical world governance frameworks for digital use? Where is governance created? On the edge (with the issuers, holders, verifiers), or within/across ecosystems? Defining trust - is a technical or human concept? How to quantify trust? Is it even possible? Is accountability the key factor in building a rule system to promote trust? Does unlocking certain governance frameworks correlate directly to the adoption of digital trust ecosystems? How is assurance used as a measure to manage risk across various contexts? Are governance frameworks composable, meaning can they be re-used across various use cases? Can we leverage governance frameworks from closed ecosystems and re-use components in open ecosystems? How does governance map to the new ToIP technology architecture model? How do private and public sectors collaborate on defining governance for large scale digital ID programs? Where to find Scott? Aloha, my name is Patricia Wistinghausen and over the past decade I have been working mostly as an Administrative Professional, and then volunteering my time as a Community Organizer and Advocate for various social justice issue areas. Through my years of public service, civic engagement, and community stewardship, I’ve been fortunate to be a founding member, board member, and leader within locally-based organizations on the island of Kaua’i, across the state, and representing Hawai’i at a national level.    Below is a list of some of the groups that I’ve been involved with, or am still actively volunteering with: Chair (2018) and Vice-Chair (2019) of the Committee on the Status of Women (CSW) with the County of Kaua’i Boards and Commissions Vice-Chair (2018-2020) and Founding Member of the statewide Veterans Caucus with the Democratic Party of Hawai’i Board of Directors for the statewide organization, Emergency Management Professionals of Hawai’i (EMP-HI) – Founding Member, Elected to the 1st Board of Directors as Charter Secretary – Executive Officer, 1st Woman on the Board, served as President-Elect (2018), President (2019), and Immediate Past President (2020). Ho’okele Coalition of Kaua’i – Prevention Committee Member – County of Kaua’i Kaua’i Community Action Team Member – Sexual Assault Violence Prevention Kaua’i State Central Committee Representative – Democratic Party of Hawai’i (2016-2020) Past Leader in Kaua’i Women’s Caucus and Kaua’i Young Democrats Founding Member and Past Coordinator of the Kaua’i Violence Prevention Coalition (KVPC) Past Board Member of the Kaua’i Rural Health Association (KRHA) Am also an advocate in groups fighting for a Living Wage, for Prison Reform, for LGBTQ+ rights, for increasing access to Veterans’ Services (especially for disabled veterans), access to Healthcare as a Human Right, along with Racial, Economic, and Environmental Justice.   For the past 7 years, I have also been most actively involved in the Prevent Suicide Kaua’i Task Force (PSKTF). I’m a Steering Committee Member, Suicide Prevention Educator, and safeTALK Trainer for our island; going on 4 years now. Out of the different community issues that I’ve dedicated my time to, in addition to being passionate about Women’s Advocacy and Gender Equity Rights, I dedicate the most time to my work in Suicide Prevention.   As is the case with nearly every person that has ever been in one of my Suicide Prevention Trainings, I am connected in the form of family members and friends who died by suicide, who are attempt survivors, who have had or are having thoughts of suicide, and because I’ve had personal struggles of my own. When you lose a loved one, a classmate, an acquaintance, or even a celebrity you admired to suicide, no matter how distant the relation may have been, the pain is still felt in your heart and throughout your community with each life lost.  My goal in having started this Consulting company in the midst of this coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, was to focus my efforts on reaching out to my community via suicide prevention education. By sharing information and delivering trainings, I aim to continue empowering individuals to recognize signs that someone may be thinking about suicide and to have the tools to engage that person and start having those difficult conversations. When it comes to suicide prevention, we know that the more we talk about suicide the less likely someone will be to take their own life. By bringing it up first, and asking the question ‘Are you thinking about suicide?’ we create a safe space and give the person struggling permission to speak about their thoughts with someone who is willing to listen without judgement and is there to support them as they recognize for themselves their reasons for wanting to die, and more importantly, talking through their reasons for wanting to KeepSafe and live.  All of the issues I have worked on and continue to work on are tied together in the shared experience of humanity. It all comes back to equity and prioritizing our mental health and well-being (#SelfCare) along with that of others. I am still learning this, but through teaching and talking with others I hope to continue understanding and finding that balance. When we talk about difficult things and allow ourselves to lean into that discomfort and be vulnerable – as Dr. Brene Brown says – we can then lean on each other for the strength we need to keep going; or we can better recognize when we need to be still, recognize and listen to how we are really feeling (happy, sad, angry, joyous) and in the moments that we feel them. In those ways we’ll be able to honor our mental health by not putting on a brave face or wearing a figurative mask, but we can work towards destigmatizing the act of being ourselves.    We’re all a work in progress, as is this website, but for now here’s also some information on my Professional Work Experience for your reference: In addition to volunteering with these groups and others, Patricia has over a decade of experience in the Administrative Professional field having served in the roles of Office Manager, Receptionist, Program Assistant, Administrative Assistant, Administrative Coordinator, and Sales Manager while working with for-profit companies, non-profit organizations, and in local and state government. She was also the founding departmental head and served as the Campus Public Safety Manager (Security Director, Safety Officer, Emergency Manager) for Kaua’i Community College, and the Transit Security Grant Planner and TheBus Safety Outreach Coordinator and Educator for the City & County of Honolulu; delivering anti-terrorism, transit-related outreach education, particularly to limited English proficiency populations. Patricia specializes in: – Prevention Education and Outreach; especially on Suicide Prevention – Public Speaking on the topics of Mental Health and Suicide, and Gender Equity as a Woman of Color – Administrative Assistant Services – both Virtual and In-Person on the island of Kaua’i  – Social Media Marketing, Website, and Content Creation Patricia is a graduate of the University of Hawai`i – West O`ahu where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration (Government Management) with Concentrations in Disaster Preparedness Emergency Management and Justice Administration. Patricia is from Kaua’i, grew up in Wailua, and now resides in Kapa’a with her husband Justin. Feel free to reach out to me! I’m a friendly person and would love to collaborate with you on helping our communities. Mahalo for taking the time to read this and looking forward to talking with you soon! With Love & Aloha,    Patricia  patricia@patriciawistinghausen.com

Today on Sojourner Truth: We bring you voices of women from the Continent. Women from Africans Rising hosted a webinar entitled, "Africa's Post COVID-19 Economic Recovery: A Feminist Perspective." Africans Rising is a grassroots movement based on the Continent of people and organizations working for peace, justice and dignity. The women gave an analysis of the failure of the liberal economic model, including a critique of imposed capitalist approaches to African economies. They said for capitalism to be a success, someone has to suffer. In their wide-ranging discussion, they spoke about how grassroots women in largely unpaid care and domestic labor subsidize African economies and how in turn, Africa subsidies the global economy. They describe what they call "climate imperialism" and refer to what they call "reproduction debt" for domestic work and the need for a care economy. Topics included policies of multi-lateral financial institutions on women in Africa. They discussed restitution, reparations and eugenics capitalism. They spoke about the significance of Africa, the murder of George Floyd, how African nations responded to Floyd's murder and the importance of Pan Africanism. Today, we bring you Part 1 of a two-part series, the voices of women based in Africa. You will hear perspectives and sharp analysis from Coumba Toure, Coordinator for Africans Rising in Senegal, Amina Mama, a Nigerian-British professor and editor of Feminist Africa, Nancy Kachingwe, a freelance consultant based in Zimbabwe specializing in women's rights, and Lebohang Liepollo Pheko, Steering Committee Member of South African Women in Dialogue.

The Honorable Greg Abbott Governor of the State of Texas P.O. Box 12428 Austin, Texas 78711 April 17, 2020 Dear Governor Abbott: The Chinese Coronavirus pandemic and the government-ordered responses to it are devastating the Texas economy and imposing untold harm on Texas families. The additional burden of the Russia-Saudi Arabia oil fight has compounded the economic drag. Thankfully, infections, hospitalizations, and even deaths have fallen far short of the worst-case scenarios some had projected. The virus appears to be on the decline worldwide and especially in Texas very soon – if not already. Texas should enact a clearly communicated and citizen-driven plan to prudently and carefully return Texans to work, to church, and possibly back to school. State Reps. Matt Krause and Mike Lang sent excellent recommendations, presenting strong suggestions on how to move the economy again and stand Texans back on their feet. Those recommendations include removing the distinction between “essential” and “non-essential” businesses; allowing restaurants, gyms, salons, and other businesses to reopen provided they take commonsense measures to maintain social distancing; and, continuing to waive regulations already waived for an extended and defined period. Both sets of suggestions are strong on “recommendations” and short on mandates. That is as it should be; trust your fellow Texans to self-govern. Lang and Krause offer a roadmap which, if correctly implemented, would do much to assist hardworking Texans in restoring normalcy and our state’s economy. A number of other ideas should be prudently reviewed and considered. For example, we strongly encourage you to re-open the state’s parks. Similarly, please force local entities to lift the onerous restrictions they have foisted on Texans and curtail their ability to impose others. Few are expecting or proposing an immediate lifting of all restrictions and recommendations imposed by the state as we seek to recover from this pandemic, but every restrictive order that remains must be justified with facts and accompanied by clearly communicated standards and timelines for its lifting. The people of Texas are strong and resilient. They have shown – both in this crisis and in every previous crisis – that they are willing to sacrifice for their neighbors in times of need. 2 They deserve the kind of leadership from their state officials that works with them to chart a course to recovery and an end to this diminished status quo. Governor Abbott, Texans are once again looking to you to lead. For a strong, free, and prosperous Texas, * Daniel A. Are Simpson and Bowles still relevant? Our panel will examine the economics and politics around our accumulating public debt and annual deficit, with an eye toward palatable and realistic solutions. Can we grow our way out of the mess? How will we cope with the twin hazards of graying demographics and healthcare inflation? Back to the credit markets: Are Treasuries as safe as they seem?
