On today's episode I chat with Susan Stiffelman, a licensed marriage and family therapist, author, parenting coach, and host of the Parenting Without Power Struggles podcast. We talk about parts, of course. Parenting parts. Spiritual seeker parts. Inner children who hide behind locked doors. And how she gently helps people return to center. Susan shares stories from her work and from her own life, including how she stayed connected to herself (and her child) during a divorce, and why she believes parenting is one of life's most profound trailheads. Key takeaways from this episode: What happens when we parent from our “hijacked” parts The power of staying tethered to ourselves, even when our kids are dysregulated How to move out of the “fixer” role and into the calm anchor our kids need What's underneath those big reactions? Why she says: “We are a society of disembodied people” What parts of you get activated when your child is dysregulated or distressed? Can you be curious about the fear underneath your frustration? What would it mean to “sit in the fire” without jumping in to fix it?   Susan welcomed me on her podcast recently to talk all things parenting + IFS, which I hope you'll check out as well.  Register for our live Self-Led Parenting Masterclass  happening May 1, 2025 (replay available)   Favorite quote: “This isn't about parenting, it's about the journey of coming home to our true nature.” -- Susan Stiffelman   About Susan Stiffelman Susan Stiffelman is a licensed Marriage, Family, and Child Therapist and the author of Parenting Without Power Strugglesand Parenting With Presence (an Eckhart Tolle Edition). Yaara will detail how this severe eating disorder impacts children's health and social lives, and offer practical strategies for parents to reduce stress around mealtimes, encourage flexibility in eating habits, and break the cycle of accommodation that often exacerbates these issues.   Plus, we'll help parents take the guiding principles of a therapy approach called SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions), and learn how to apply it with kids who are showing more normative picky eating challenges, that are not clinical, but still can be frustrating and exasperating for parents to navigate.       LEARN MORE ABOUT YARRA: Yaara Shimshoni   WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SPACE, CHECK OUT MY INTERVIEW WITH THE CREATOR, DR. She also hosts the AT Parenting Survival Podcast and has a Youtube channel, Ask the Child Therapist. She joined me on Uncorking a Story to talk about her latest book, The Grief Rock: A Book to Understand Grief and Love. Key Takeaways Processing Grief: The discussion centered on how to help children process grief, especially when the person assisting them is simultaneously dealing with their own grief. Writing as Therapy: Natasha turned to writing after the sudden passing of her husband, which left her widowed with three young children who were each expressing their grief in unique ways. Silver Linings: The conversation revealed that Natasha has a strong focus on her relationship with her children and her parenting, emphasizing the importance of not getting lost in the details of life and appreciating every moment: Grief can lead to a greater appreciation for life, as it makes you realize that tomorrows are not guaranteed. Grief can bring families closer together, as it did for Natasha and her children, strengthening their bond. Experiencing grief can lead to significant lifestyle changes that prioritize family and personal well-being, such as closing a private practice to focus on more flexible work that allows for traveling and spending quality time together.  It can inspire personal growth and new experiences, like traveling to different parts of the world, which might not have been considered before the experience of loss. “Fortnite keeps me in business.”- Brent Colwick, Child Therapist. When past generations hung out with friends (as children), the worst they would see was an R rated movie on late night cable. Or they might find a magazine hidden away in a closet. Things have changed for today's generation. They have access to the some of the most addictive and mind polluting images in history, and it's in their pockets, or in their bedroom. On this week's show, Kurt and Chad talk with therapist Brent Colwick ( Brentcolwick.com ) about the negative effects that poisonous images and too much screen time can bring. (This is a repeat episode - enjoy!)

What is Child Sex Trafficking? What causes it? Who's responsible? How do we prevent it? How do we support survivors? And how do we see justice for victims? We have partnered with the Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL) Hub East Africa to bring you this very necessary and urgent conversation. We recognize that it's an emotive topic that's hardly discussed and often shrouded in mystery. We aim to change that by raising awareness. It is estimated that there are about 20,000 victims of child sex trafficking in Kenya according to IJM Kenya and only a fraction of the cases are reported to the police. Additionally, the 2020 Trafficking In Persons Report by the United States Department of State indicated that out of the 853 reported victims of trafficking in Kenya in 2019, 351 were girls and 227 were boys while the DCI's Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) proactively identified 144 trafficking victims during raids and encounters with commercial sex establishments. Similarly, a report by the East Africa Rights Child Network (EARCN) on Child Trafficking and Unsafe Migration in Kenya in the time of Covid 19, highlighted that Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) affects many children, who are trafficked into brothels and the sex tourism industry, and cases of Online Child Sexual Exploitation of Children (OCSE) were noted. To help us dissect this issue, we invited 3 guests:Timothy Kihungu, Attorney at International Justice Mission (IJM) KenyaMargaret Njihia, Child Psychologist and Director, Sterling Performance Africa (SPA)John Ngoti, Child Therapist, Childline Kenya To report any cases of child abuse, neglect, exploitation or trafficking, call the FREE HOTLINE 116, run by Childline Kenya. To help/partner, please contact us on social media. Bianca Venter is a South African Mom Blogger & professional child therapist who is simplifying things to live an authentic lifestyle. She is also passionate about sharing her own personal and professional pockets of wisdom along the way. In this episode of The Honest Hour Podcast, I ask Bianca to elaborate on normal child "misbehavior" or "toddler outbursts" versus symptoms of autism. We discuss the genius of an autistic child, their ability to overcome dysfunctional behaviors with therapy, and how we can teach our children to self-regulate from an early age, as well as learn how to be the much-needed "functional" adults in the room. We had a good laugh about my own parenting mishaps, as well as my coffee addiction compared to her uber healthy lifestyle. Bianca is a breath of fresh air in the Mom Blogger world, authentic in all her content, words, and wisdom. She is truly passionate not only about her role as a mother and a child therapist, but also about heartfelt connection in the online influencer landscape. Weed story: 14:32. What's the best way to punish a child? Therapist Kelli (http://www.kellimiller.com/) and Dreadmere (https://www.youtube.com/user/Dreadmere) are back this week to debate a timeless problem: how do you handle a dipshit kid who won't fall in line? Do smacks count as child abuse? Maybe a prescient genius who hosts this show has the best solution. Plus, I tried weed for my first time. I tell the full story on how that happened around the 14 minute mark. Great episode, stay 'til the end for all the voicemail as well. Number below. Watch the video version here at Madcast Media Network YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChMUFeIZ1l9uRJ4bIXuAKDg?sub_confirmation=1 Ron Babcock's (http://twitter.com/ronbabcock) tells a harrowing tale of his bloody fights with his brother. Maybe Ron's "threat of a belt" is enough? Not if your kid is kinky. Junior Journalist Taylor Nikolai (https://www.instagram.com/taylornikolai/) brings the news, and we learn that he's never been punished before because he was always a good kid. BARF. Mikey Bolts (https://www.youtube.com/user/michaelbalalis) brings some wisdom you can bank on this episode. Now they're pissed even though the doctor delivered what they wanted: a tall man with brown hair and blue eyes. Sounds like me, minus the blue eyes.
