Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Jim Mahoney, Renowned Hollywood Press Agent About Harvey's guest: If you're a fan of the golden age of Hollywood, this episode of our show is most definitely for you.  For over 30 years our guest, Jim Mahoney, was one of Hollywood's most successful, respected and sought after press agents in show business history.   At the age of 19, he was hired by Howard Strickling, head of publicity at MGM studios, and was assigned to the legendary Clark Gable.   In those final years of MGM's heyday, he also handled publicity for other stars including Debbie Reynolds, Ann Blyth, Howard Keele and Roger Moore.   Then, after a stint with the iconic syndicated newspaper columnist, Harrison Carroll, at the Los Angeles Herald Express, he became a publicist at the prestigious firm of Rogers and Cowan in Hollywood.  And after 3 years, he opened his own immensely successful entertainment public relations business, where he acquired the most prestigious list of legendary clients in show business history, including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Judy Garland, Bob Hope, Tony Bennett, Jimmy Stewart, Robert Wagner, Peggy Lee, Jack Lemmon, George C. Scott, Lee Marvin, Steve McQueen, Johnny Carson – and believe me, I'm just scratching the surface.   And when business partner Paul Wasserman joined the firm, they became THE premiere representatives for the greatest music acts of all time, including The Rolling Stones, U2, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Neil Diamond, Linda Ronstadt, Glen Campbell and dozens more.  Over the years he developed close friendships with many of his superstar clients, and he worked night and day managing their mercurial and fragile egos, keeping their secrets, suppressing their outrageous and scandalous behaviours, and pulling out all the stops to preserve their all-important public image.   He quickly became an expert not only in communications and media relations, but crisis management.   And NOW he's written a highly compelling, entertaining and incredibly eye-opening book entitled “Get Mahoney:  A Hollywood Insider's Memoir”, in which he FINALLY tells many of the stories that he's kept close to the vest all these years.   The book provides a unique perspective on the history of Hollywood, and some of its most notorious characters and events.  I absolutely loved this book and could not put down until the very last page.   For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Jim Mahoney, go to:https://getmahoney.com/https://www.facebook.com/people/Get-Mahoney/https://www.instagram.com/jimmahoneypr #JimMahoney   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

A particular interest of mine is phone calls in movies. I'm interested in them as plot devices, as examples of good or indifferent screenwriting, as opportunities for actors to show different sides of themselves in scenes where they're not opposite other actors, and on and on. In this episode we'll take a look at a few different genres of Movie Phone Call scenes: scenes where actors are onscreen portraying both sides of the calls, scenes where we only hear the audio of the other side of the call, and then, finally...the Holy Grail of Movie Phone Calls: The One-Sided Phone Call. Clips The YouTube channel BurgerTime's excellent Supercut of Movie Phone calls. Bob Newhart is the master of the One-Sided Phone Call. Abbott and Costello were an American comedy duo composed of comedians Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, whose work on radio and in film and television made them the most popular comedy team of the 1940s and early 1950s and the highest-paid entertainers in the world during World War II. Their patter routine "Who's on First?" is one of the best-known comedy routines of all time. Their popularity waned in the early 1950s due to overexposure and their film and television contracts lapsed. The partnership ended soon afterwards. The team's first known radio broadcast was on The Kate Smith Hour on February 3, 1938. At first, the similarities between their voices made it difficult for radio listeners (as opposed to stage audiences) to tell them apart during their rapid-fire repartee. As a result, Costello affected a high-pitched, childish voice. "Who's on First?" was first performed for a national radio audience the following month. They performed on the program as regulars for two years, while also landing roles in a Broadway revue, The Streets of Paris, in 1939. Abbott and Costello on radio (note Abbott without toupee normally worn in films) After debuting their own program, The Abbott and Costello Show, as Fred Allen's summer replacement in 1940, Abbott and Costello joined Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy on The Chase and Sanborn Hour in 1941. Two of their films (Buck Privates and Hold That Ghost) were adapted for Lux Radio Theater that year. Their program returned in its own weekly time slot starting on October 8, 1942 and Camel cigarettes as sponsor.

Her clients have been nominated and won Emmy’s, Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Grammy’s, Independent Spirit Awards and Tony Awards, and participated in campaigns for multiple Oscar nominated films. Lisa maintained a successful career in the theater for a while, but then she suddenly started getting sick. After struggling with an autoimmune disorder which made her unable to perform, she had to move back home with her parents in South Carolina for a few years to seek treatment. But New York City was still calling her name, and once she was in remission, she packed her bags, went back, and “had to figure out what she wanted to be when she grew up.” Lisa shares how a chance offer to do in house PR for one restaurant eventually turned into two restaurants, which turned into phone calls with George Clooney’s publicist. A publicist who would later become her mentor, and recommend she start her own firm. So she did, and continues to work successfully almost 14 years later.  In this episode, we talk about:  When her parents had to convince her to go to college, rather than NYC right out of high school  The curve ball her autoimmune disorder threw at her  Chasing down George Clooney’s publicist after beginning PR work for a restaurant  How she made connections and gained clients early on in her PR career  How her experience as a publicist has changed amidst COVID-19 Losing client and friend Nick Cordero to COVID-19  Why she enjoys and continues working for herself, rather than joining a larger firm Connect with Lisa: IG: @LisaGoldbergPR Twitter: @LisaGoldbergPR Web: LSG Public Relations Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

Adrian Bryan-Brown is a press agent and theatrical promoter. He has been involved with Broadway theatre and was called "one of the top press agents on Broadway" by the Association of Theatrical Press Agents & Managers. In 1983, he joined Solters/Roskin/Friedman, working with Joshua Ellis on many Broadway productions. He then worked with Chris Boneau and in 1991 established Boneau/Bryan-Brown, one of the leading theatrical press agencies in New York. He has represented more than 200 shows including Tony Award-winning plays like Art, Copenhagen and The History Boys. Other plays include Frost/Nixon, Skylight and Amy's View and musicals include The Who's Tommy, Sunset Boulevard, Titanic, Jersey Boys, Monty Python's Spamalot and Mamma Mia! In 2015, Bryan-Brown was awarded a Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre at the Tony Awards. This is the time of year when Press Agents especially are working overtime.  Not only are there all those big Broadway shows opening on top of one another as we approach the Tony Award cutoff cliff (and only a handful of Press Agents to handle them), but then there are the awards themselves.   That’s why we’re all lucky that Adrian Bryan-Brown, one of the partners in the mega firm, Boneau/Bryan-Brown (The Book of Mormon, Spring Awakening, Something Rotten!, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and so many more), sat down with me to share his thoughts about Broadway “spinsters” including: Why the primary job of a Press Agent is the same as a Playwright. How making ice cream cakes at Carvel led to his career as a Press Agent. What will press look like on Broadway in 20 years? How social media makes everyone a spokesperson and what Producers need to do about that. His take on Critics.  Why they matter . . . or don’t. The Abbott & Costello Show - Abbott and Costello William (Bud) Abbott and Lou Costello (born Louis Francis Cristillo) were an American comedy duo whose work in radio, film and television made them one of the most popular teams in the history of comedy. Thanks to the endurance of their most popular and influential routine, "Who's on First?"---whose rapid-fire word play and comprehension confusion set the preponderant framework for most of their best-known routines---the team are also the only comedians known to have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Bud Abbott was born in Asbury Park, NJ, October 2, 1897 and died April 24, 1974 in Woodland Hills, California. Lou Costello was born in Paterson, NJ, March 6, 1906 and died March 3, 1959 in East Los Angeles, California. After working as Allen's summer replacement, Abbott and Costello joined Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy on The Chase and Sanborn Hour in 1941, while two of their films (Buck Privates and Hold That Ghost) were adapted for Lux Radio Theater. They launched their own weekly show October 8, 1942, sponsored by Camel cigarettes. The Abbott and Costello Show mixed comedy with musical interludes (usually, by singers such as Connie Haines, Marilyn Maxwell, the Delta Rhythm Boys, Skinnay Ennis, and the Les Baxter Singers). Regulars and semi-regulars on the show included Artie Auerbrook, Elvia Allman, Iris Adrian, Mel Blanc, Wally Brown, Sharon Douglas, Verna Felton, Sidney Fields, Frank Nelson, Martha Wentworth, and Benay Venuta. Ken Niles was the show's longtime announcer, doubling as an exasperated foil to Abbott & Costello's mishaps (and often fuming in character as Costello insulted his on-air wife routinely); he was succeeded by Michael Roy, with annoncing chores also handled over the years by Frank Bingman and Jim Doyle. THIS EPISODE: New Press Agent - March 8, 1945 - NBC network. Sponsored by: Camels, Prince Albert Pipe Tobacco. Costello gets a new press agent.
