To achieve a 100% renewable energy system worldwide by 2050 affordable or not? Apart from the maturing technology, like solar PV and wind power, are we too late to develop some alternative technologies such as carbon capture and storage, direct air capture, geoengineering, and small modular nuclear reactor? With the tightening time window to control carbon emissions in order to keep the global temperature rise on average by 2100 well below 2 degree Celsius, what can policymakers from major economies do to make the most use of the available and scalable low-carbon energy technologies? One of the best scholars who are able to answer these questions is Dr. Mark Jacobson from Stanford University. Over 15 years ago, he proposed a 100% renewable energy system based on water, wind, and solar energy (WWS) and has been working and researching the relevant energy policy and planning solutions for a variety of countries, states, and cities ever since. In this episode, Professor Jacobson discusses his ideas and research findings on the WWS system. Although you may not agree with most or even some of his arguments, the discussions are definitely to expand your learning on the future energy system and some key policy issues of addressing climate change. As he mentioned at the end of the talk, educating ourselves on such complicated climate and energy policy issues could be the first action point for each one of us. Support the show

A Renewable Energy Transition: Clean Air, Low Carbon with Wind, Water, Solar with Mark Z. Jacobson

EcoJustice Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2023 64:45

Is a 100% clean, renewable energy future by the year 2050 possible? Our guest, Stanford Professor Mark Z. Jacobson proposes that the most efficient and socially and environmentally just way is to replace fossil fuels through a combined implementation of Wind, Water, and Solar energy solutions. Are these solutions perfect? No. However, when compared to other so-called energy solutions like nuclear, biofuel, biomass, waste to energy, and hydrogen (just to name a few) these three (Wind, Water-Geothermal, Solar) show significant promise. As our guest explains, real solutions must always be BOTH clean and renewable, rapidly deployable, low cost, and carry with them very few side effects. In this encore interview from early 2023, Professor Jacobson responds to his detractors and also debunks some myths, while getting at the solutions. What about the intermittency of wind and solar? Is there enough battery storage? Are wind turbines dangerous to wildlife? What is the real cost of battery mining and disposal? Why don't small nuclear reactors make the cut and how are they dangerous even to global security? How do the proposed costs-benefits of these solutions pencil out when compared to other options and the fossil fuel industry? In his latest book, No Miracles Needed, How Today's Technology Can Save Our Climate and Clean Our Air, Professor Mark Z. Jacobson [https://web.stanford.edu/group/efmh/jacobson/] lays out a clear framework based on peer reviewed studies, and he does so in a way that is easy to understand. Professor Jacobson has developed computer models and roadmaps that illustrate how countries, states, cities, and towns can transition to 100% renewable energy for all their energy needs. He is a man with a clean energy plan, one with a stable and efficient grid that would provide reliable electricity at lower cost while creating new jobs. Mark Z. Jacobson is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University, and Director of their Atmosphere/Energy Program. Jessica Aldridge, Co-Host and Producer of EcoJustice Radio, is an environmental educator, community organizer, and 15-year waste industry leader. She is a co-founder of SoCal 350, organizer for ReusableLA, and founded Adventures in Waste. Listeners may recall two years ago this past month I interviewed Professor Jacobson regarding his text “100% Clean Renewable Energy and Storage for Everything.”  I noted in my introduction to that 2021 interview Prof. Jacobson argued since 2009 100% of the world's energy supply could be produced via solar, wind and water power within 20 to 30 years.  The barriers to a 100% conversion to renewables are not, he continues to argue, technological or even economic but social and political.  In “No Miracles Needed,” Prof Jacobson argues we can transition to 80% wind, water and solar (WWS) power by 2030 and to 100% by 2050, ideally 2035. During this 33-minute interview, Prof. Jacobson begins by explaining what three problems converting to 100% clean energy simultaneously solve, identifies the technologies that allow for 100% conversion to WWS, what few remaining technologies are still in development and massive efficiencies associated with WWS versus fossil fuel combustion.  He discusses the numerous reasons why subsidizing carbon capture technology is, as he states, a scam, how hospitals can readily decarbonize and concludes with a critique of Inflation Reduction subsidies.                     Prof. Mark Z. Jacobson's career has focused on better understanding air pollution and global warming problems and developing large-scale clean, renewable energy solutions to them.  Toward that end, he has developed and applied three-dimensional atmosphere-biosphere-ocean computer models and solvers to simulate air pollution, weather, climate, and renewable energy. He has also developed roadmaps to transition states and countries to 100% clean, renewable energy for all purposes and computer models to examine grid stability in the presence of high penetrations of renewable energy.  He has numerous awards including being recognized as the #1 impactful world scientist in Meteorology & Atmospheric Sciences among those first publishing past 1985, the World Visionary Clean Tech Influencer of the Year, Clean Tech Business Club (2022) and one of the World's 100 most influential people in climate policy, Apolitical (2019, 2022).  Prof. Jacobson earned a BA in economics, a BA in civil engineering and a MS in civil engineering from Stanford and a MS and PhD in atmospheric sciences from UCLA.Information on "No Miracles Needed" is at: https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/no-miracles-needed/8D183E65462B8DC43397C19D7B6518E3.Mark's recent Samuel Lawrence Foundation interview noted during this interview is at: .       This is a public episode. Debunking the Skeptics: Real Solutions For A Clean, Renewable Energy Future

In this interview, Professor Jacobson responds to his detractors and also debunks some myths, while getting at the solutions. THE THESIS: There is a Country where it is increasingly illegal to obey God. In that same Country, it is perfectly legal to mentally--and, in fact, medically--kidnap children. That Country is the United States and God will not be mocked.  THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES:  Galatians 6 Doing Good to All 6 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. 2 Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. 4 Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, 5 for each one should carry their own load. 6 Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor. 7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. THE NEWS & COMMENT: NO decent adult, NO godly adult hides the pain and confusion of a child from a parent, unless they have legal proof that the parent has been removed from that child's life due to abuse. But, that is exactly why so-called “schools” do by policy when it relates to their idol of “transgenderism.” The Useful idiocy of people like Hank Johnson are vital to the efforts of The Party.  [AUDIO] - Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA): "People at school board meetings will never forget MAGA Republicans descending on their school board meetings just like they did on January 6. It was a coordinated attack happening across the country." [AUDIO] -  Guam will Capsize and Tip Over into the ocean Hank Johnson Thankfully, a small group of conservatives is beginning--oh, so slowly--to realize that most, if not all, Teacher Unions are anti-family, which makes them anti-God.  EXCLUSIVE: Sen. Blackburn Introduces Legislation To End Federal Charter For Largest Teachers' Union In US The white house is attempting to outlaw abiding with God. Our friend, Professor Jacobson is fighting against the plan of the people who run Joe Biden to require schools to speak and teach the lie that kids are born in the wrong body.  READ: [Legal Insurrection's] Opposition To Biden's Plan to Gut Campus Due Process and Free Speech, and Impose Gender Ideology; Legal Insurrection Foundation files comment letter: “we oppose the Department's (a) efforts to gut due process protections for persons accused of sexual harassment, (b) threats to free speech posed by dramatic expansion of its definition of harassment, and (c) imposition of gender identity ideology into Title IX, in a way that would undermine the statute's language, purpose, and goals of providing equal opportunities to women.” This is psychological kidnapping. In separate countries like Washington and Oregon, it can be a precursor to medical kidnapping as The Party can chemically and surgically mutilate kids without parental consent, but they can force the parents to pay.  [AUDIO] - Finally, the Michigan Department of Education instructs teachers how to facilitate child sexual transitions and recommends that they keep a child's “chosen name and pronouns” a secret from parents, even if the child is suicidal. [AUDIO] -  When a teacher asks how to respond to a student who claims to have “she/he/they/them” pronouns, the trainer responds adamantly: “Go with what the kid says. They're the best experts on their lives. They're the best experts on their own identities and their own bodies.” [AUDIO] - Trainer Amorie Robinson, who says she is a “Black, masculine-identified, cisgendered lesbian” and uses the “African name” Kofi Adoma, says that gender is an infinite spectrum, including identities such as “genderfluid,” “genderqueer,” “butch,” “stud,” and “questioning.” Here is a red state, Idaho, linking to vile sexual content for kids. Yes, I have heard people say this stuff is “several links away” from the Idaho school resources. There should be NO links to it all. This is exactly what Washington, Oregon and California did. They start slow and work-up. Weak, professional Republican “governor of Boise,” Brad Little needs to fire everyone involved in this. If not, he is no better than a Democrat.  [AUDIO] - The Idaho state government is now training students in "porn literacy," teaching how pornography can "sexually excite and create fantasy" for children. It's time to break the state-run education monopoly and provide families with universal school choice. [AUDIO] - Meanwhile, so-called Republican Governor, Brad Little is bragging about funding the schools!  [AUDIO] - An Iowa teenage sex trafficking victim who stabbed her rapist to death was sentenced by a judge on Tuesday to five years of closely supervised probation and must pay $150,000 restitution to her abuser's family. Forbes published a hit piece on a teen girl! Chloe Cole is a “transitioner”, a young woman attempting to get her body back from gender-jacking “doctors.” Forbes attacked her because . . . she's autistic.  Forbes appears to have taken the article down, here's a write-up with some of its lowlights.  Yeah, Forbes removed it LISTENERS EMAILS: Kim Words paint a picture. I have had to stop the podcast a few times recently when you got very descriptive about sexual crimes. You were talking about Sexual researcher abusing his daughter, Clinton rap discussion. We need to know but we don't always need to be close to the face of evil. Paul Re: WAP episode: I won't say I enjoyed it, but I WILL say I am grateful and indebted to you for it. I would never sit and watch Hil-liar-ry say anything, but it's good that I heard the excerpt from her new show. Then your extended discussion about all the non-Biblical sexuality being shoved at us caused me to contemplate so many past personal exchanges and personal acquaintances and events, and my understanding becomes greatly enhanced. Thanks SO much for that episode, and ALL your episodes. Paul from White Lake Brian Brother I was deeply offended by you playing those vile words. We're back in familiar territory on the podcast this week. Once again, we are revisiting Mark Jacobson's famous -- some might say infamous -- 100% renewable energy scenario. This week, we're rounding out our previous conversation with Professor Jacobson by turning to Dr. Christopher Clack, the lead author of a critique of Jacobson's modeling, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in June. Dr. Clack is the CEO of Vibrant Clean Energy, a grid modeling firm. His expertise is in mathematics, statistics and optimization. He formerly worked at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder. Dr. Clack is also the co-lead author of a 2016 paper in the journal Nature Climate Change looking at how the U.S. could slash carbon emissions by 80 percent. In this podcast, we talk about Clack's rebuttal, Jacobson's rebuttal to Clack's rebuttal, the meaning of the debate over 100 percent renewables, and the reason so many academics targeted Jacobson's work.
