Jerry Portnoy grew up in Chicago hearing the blues being played outside his father's rug store on famed Maxwell Street during the late 1940s and early '50s.After dropping out of college, he became immersed in the colorful world of pool hustlers like Cornbread Red, and Minnesota Fats as he managed the largest pool hall in Chicago. During a stint as a paratrooper early in the Vietnam war, he applied for discharge as a conscientious objector, and lived in San Francisco during 1967's "summer of love." While bumming around Europe the following year, Portnoy heard the blues again on a record by Sonny Boy Williamson and instantly became obsessed with mastering blues harmonica. He returned to Chicago and in 1974 he was playing in small Black clubs at night when Muddy Waters plucked him from his day job at Cook County Jail to fill the historic harmonica chair in his fabled band. Eric Clapton followed suit in 1991. In a career that took him from ghetto taverns to the White House and the Royal Albert Hall, he went from the raggedy vans and cheap roadside motels of the blues world to the private jets and five-star hotels of the rock world. Between those two very different gigs was a struggle to survive the vagaries of the music business and the pressures of life on the road. In a remarkable life, he also assisted in surgery, lodged in a Moroccan house of ill repute, and dined at Giorgio Armani's.Dancing with Muddy details the surprising, lively, and sometimes bumpy ride of a blues harmonica legend. Dancing with Muddy: Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, and My Lucky Life In and Out of the Blues is the memoir of Blues harmonica legend Jerry Portnoy, who details the surprising, lively, and sometimes bumpy ride of his life and career. Jerry was discovered and recruited by Muddy for the prestigious role of harmonica player in his band after hearing him play the instrument in clubs on Chicago's South Side. Jerry got to play in the White House, the Royal Albert Hall, and many of the world's stages. He also found himself in shocking and exciting situations, like assisting in surgery, dining at Giorgio Armani's and working at the Cook County jail. With Blues music seeing a renewed interest thanks to the immense success of the movie Sinners, Jerry can be a valuable insider voice to the genre's history and evolution. Discover the iconic Chicago-style hot dog, the "Chicago Dog" or "Chicago Red Hot." Originating from the windy city of Chicago, Illinois, this all-beef frankfurter is a culinary delight. It's served on a poppy seed bun and loaded with an array of toppings that give it the nickname "dragged through the garden." These toppings include yellow mustard, chopped white onions, bright green sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers, and a sprinkle of celery salt. Ketchup is a no-go in Chicago-style hot dogs, with many Chicagoans and enthusiasts firmly against it. The hot dog has a fascinating history, making its way from Vienna through Frankfurt before becoming popular at fairs and baseball games in Chicago. The pork-free, kosher-style, all-beef frank was said to have originated in 1929 at Fluky's during the Great Depression when they were sold for just a nickel from carts along Maxwell Street. While the traditional Chicago-style hot dog adheres to the classic recipe, variations exist. Some vendors add cucumber slices or lettuce, omit certain ingredients, or even offer cheese sauce for a "cheese-dog" twist. The cooking methods also vary, with most hot dogs being steamed or water-simmered, while others are grilled over charcoal, known as "char-dogs." These delicious hot dogs typically weigh 2 ounces and feature a natural casing for that satisfying "snap" when you bite into them. The buns, made to withstand steam warming, are often sourced from Alpha Baking Company. This led to her appearing in two blues documentaries: one about Maxwell Street and another about James Cotton. Cheryl now runs The Harmonica Experience camp twice a year in the home of the blues, Clarkesdale, Mississippi, where she uses her mouth-on (the harmonica) approach. Links:Cheryl's website:https://cherylarena.com/Gigs:https://cherylarena.com/gigs/Harmonica Experience teaching camp:https://www.theharmonicaexperience.com/Videos:Sonny Junior playing with Sugar Ray:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rld1Q4umqp0With Big Band:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7qUXseHLzg&list=PL2B3mUb87_ARcAhCRAUoxKSAy6CEQwI2C&index=19The ‘Harmonica Experience' overview, with Charlie Musselwhite:https://youtu.be/2gBS3welRZYBlog on ‘The Harmonica Experience':https://www.karenpulferfocht.com/blog/2022/8/3/the-harmonica-experienceGreasy Gravy on chromatic:https://www.facebook.com/david.m.rosen/videos/593960639065696/Stormy Weather:https://www.facebook.com/david.m.rosen/videos/790562382263078/Big Road in duo  with Sonny Collie:https://youtu.be/pbzS5jwjtpsOff The Wall:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HJtvRhhbv8&list=PL2B3mUb87_ARcAhCRAUoxKSAy6CEQwI2C&index=5Podcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQ

Ed Dziedzic taught history in the Chicago Public Schools and worked on the trading floor of the Chicago Board of Trade. He is a great believer in the power of music and serendipity to change lives. In this childhood memory, Ed recalls discovering the blues through old record albums and two blues harmonicas that his older brother left behind when he moved out of the family house. Ed takes us through his teenage days visiting Chicago's infamous Maxwell Street open street market. He explains how the music he heard at that outdoor trading post impacted his life in ways he could not have imagined. In the end, Ed's story is a personal love story told with one of Chicago's most famous historic neighborhoods as a backdrop.

What is the nature of place, and how does one undertake to write about it? To answer these questions, geographer and poet Tim Cresswell looks to Chicago’s iconic Maxwell Street Market area. Maxwell Street was for decades a place where people from all corners of the city mingled to buy and sell goods, play and listen to the blues, and encounter new foods and cultures. Now, redeveloped and renamed University Village, it could hardly be more different. In Maxwell Street: Writing and Thinking Place (U Chicago Press, 2019), Cresswell advocates approaching the study of place as an “assemblage” of things, meanings, and practices. He models this innovative approach through a montage format that exposes the different types of texts—primary, secondary, and photographic sources—that have attempted to capture the essence of the area. Cresswell studies his historical sources just as he explores the different elements of Maxwell Street—exposing them layer by layer. Brilliantly interweaving words and images, Maxwell Street sheds light on a historic Chicago neighborhood and offers a new model for how to write about place that will interest anyone in the fields of geography, urban studies, or cultural history. Tim Cresswell is the Ogilvie Professor of Geography at the University of Edinburgh. Maxwell Street: Writing and Thinking Place was published in 2019 by the University of Chicago Press. Urban blues started in Chicago and St. Louis, as music created by part-time musicians who played as street musicians, and other events in their neighborhood. For many blues musicians, the “day job” made their living, but the nighttime music gig was their life. An early setting for Chicago blues was the open-air market on Maxwell Street, one of the largest open-air markets in the nation. The first blues clubs in Chicago were mostly in predominantly black neighborhoods on the South Side, with a few in the smaller black neighborhoods on the West Side. Chicago blues was one of the most significant influences on early rock music. Chuck Berry originally recorded with Chess Records—one of the biggest Chicago blues record labels of that time. ***** Join the conversation on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008232395712 ****** or by email at dannymemorylane@gmail.com In this episode you’ll hear: 1) Playin' With My Friends by B.B. The echos of tradition bellowing from the birthplaces he played such as: Maxwell Street, Theresa's, Checkerboard and Rosa's Lounges, pulse from every chord in his fingers today. John Primer is a Chicago Blues Living Legend.John's father died tragically in Mississippi when he was young. When his mother found work in Chicago, John soon followed, bringing the sounds and spirit of Mississippi with him in 1963. He then fell for the music of both the city's west and south sides. Fronting his first band, The Maintainers, he was asked to join and eventually lead the house band at the world famous Theresa’s Lounge in 1974. Over the next seven years, John would play with such blues originators as: Sammy Lawhorn, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Smokey Smothers, Lonnie Brooks and many others shaping the foundations of the Chicago blues to come.

Against the backdrop of a gritty 1890’s Chicago teaming with labor problems, filthy sweatshops, and putrid stockyards, two young immigrants struggle to survive. Chaya and her brilliant younger brother Asher escape the tedium of the Wisconsin farm to which their parents had emigrated from Eastern Europe. Guided by a kind, wealthy young man to the Jewish neighborhood of Maxwell Street, the two siblings, still speaking with Yiddish accents, scrape together a living until they each find a way to reconcile their convictions with their lives. The Lake on Fire (Sarabande Books, 2018) is about whom to love, the struggle between rich and poor, and the choices we make about how to live in an unfair world. Although set in the 19th century, Rosellen Brown’s writing, as intriguing and luminous as Chicago’s “White City,” has something to say about our still unfair, turbulent times. Rosellen Brown currently teaches in the MFA in Writing Program at Chicago’s School of the Art Institute, and lives in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, home of the Columbian Exposition, the University of Chicago, and the Obamas. WILLIE BUCK special guest. Buck has been leading notable bands in Chicago for over 50 years. He arrived on the scene during the 50’s in the midst of the Chicago blues heyday-after a short period of singing as a teenager in the south on the Chitin Circuit. He quickly became a force on Maxwell Street singing with Dave & Louis Myers, Little Mack Simmons, Fred Below and Big Moose Walker who he would later record his first full length album with. His earlier LP singles are often sought out by collectors, they include how can “I be Nice to you,” “I Want my Baby” and the “Disco Blues.” For many years Willie was operating his own tow truck business and singing on the weekends but during his recent resurgence he has recorded an album for Delmark with the Rockin’ Johnny band and an album in Europe with JL Pardo. His singing style is simple, powerful and channels the spirit of Muddy Waters who is his primary influence. Many of today’s blues stars credit Willie for helping to give them a start in the blues. Willie had a small part in the movie Hoop Dreams and was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2004.

Welcome to opening weekend at Murphy's Saloon - Podcast Home of the Blues. Drinks are on the house. Every week I'll be serving up the best of independent and podsafe blues, blues rock, rhythm 'n' blues, or whatever else catches my ear. I'm also trying to make arrangements for special permission to play some signed blues artists, so keep your fingers crossed. Show Notes: • Rocket Science by Brain Buckit. I want to apologize to Brain Buckit for not looking further for information about them before recording my show. Be sure to visit their site (linked above), and if you liked what you heard, buy their CD. • There's More Pretty Girls Than One by Blind Arvella Gray. Huge thanks to Cary Baker of Cary Baker's Conqueroo for giving me special permission to play Blind Arvella Gray. Arvella was the real deal, there's no doubt about that, and Cary is a true fan of the blues. • There She Goes by Brother Love. What can I say about Brother Love? That he's got the goods? Hell, yeah! That he rocks? Hell, yeah again! There's a reason Brother Love has two songs in the Top Five at the Podsafe Music Network. Go to the iTunes Music Store or his Web site now, and buy the very aptly titled ALBUM OF THE YEAR. All the best, Brother. • On A Podcast by Cruisebox. If downloads were dollar bills, the guys in Cruisebox would be wealthy men. I first heard On A Podcast shortly after I tuned in to the podosphere. Not a day goes by that I don't find myself humming the Podcasting International Anthem. Talk about an earworm! • Play This by Dave from Chub Creek. Chub Creek is a podcast by Dave and Gary, two Canadian buddies who grew up together, but haven't seen each other in 10 years. The music they've made available at the Podsafe Music Network is drawn from their shows. Thanks, guys! (All songs, except There's More Pretty Girls Than One, courtesy of the Podsafe Music Network). For more information about Maxwell Street, go here. NOTE(edited 3/13/07): If this episode is your first encounter with Murphy's Saloon, please feel free to skip ahead a few shows - the content of this episode is not an accurate reflection of what the show has become. I think I've gotten much better at it, for one thing. Audio levels aren't uniform until about episode #7. The shows are good content-wise, it's just my audio level is reeeeeally low.
