Send us a textShort Summary: Insider's look at the COVID-19 pandemic response from a seasoned epidemiologist, unraveling myths and lessons with straightforward science.About the guest: Martin Kulldorff, PhD is an epidemiologist and biostatistician with decades of experience in infectious disease monitoring and vaccine safety. He was formerly a professor at Harvard Medical School. Note: Podcast episodes are fully available to paid subscribers on the M&M Substack. Partial versions are available elsewhere. Full transcript and other information on Substack.Episode Summary: Dr. Martin Kulldorff discusses the COVID pandemic response, reflecting on the controversial Great Barrington Declaration, which opposed lockdowns in favor of protecting the vulnerable. They explore the virus's fatality rates, asymptomatic spread, and vaccine efficacy, contrasting textbook epidemiology with real-world decisions. He critiques institutional failures, like the CDC's misleading claims. He shares optimism for future pandemics with better leadership and public awareness.Key Takeaways:Lockdowns ignored basic public health principles, causing collateral damage like missed cancer screenings, while Sweden's focused protection approach led to lower excess mortality.Early data showed COVID's risk was 1000x higher for older people, yet lockdowns didn't prioritize them, unlike textbook strategies.Asymptomatic spread made containment impossible, unlike Ebola, where isolation works due to clear symptoms.Natural immunity was downplayed despite 2500 years of evidence, leading to wasted vaccines on those already immune.CDC falsely claimed vaccines stopped transmission, eroding trust when people got sick anyway, fueling vaccine skepticism.mRNA vaccine boosters lack proper trials, and their long-term effects need rigorous study, not assumptions.Kulldorff's new Journal of the Academy of Public Health pushes open peer review to rebuild trust in science.Related episode:M&M #100: Infectious Disease, Epidemiology, Pandemics, Health Policy, COVID, Politicization Support the showAll episodes, show notes, transcripts, etc. at the M&M Substack Affiliates: Lumen device to optimize your metabolism for weight loss or athletic performance. According to reports, Gaetz concluded he had no pathway towards confirmation after meeting with Senators earlier in the week and determining that at least four—Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Mitch McConnell, and John Curtis—would not support him. Republicans will hold a 53 to 47 advantage in the Senate, consequently cabinet nominees cannot afford to lose the support of more than four Republicans. 3:30pm- Dr. Martin Kulldorff—An Epidemiologist, Biostatistician, and a Founding Fellow at Hillsdale College's Academy for Science and Freedom—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his latest article for The Federalist, “RFK Is Right—Let's Study Vaccine Risk Factors.” Dr. Kulldorff emphasizes his support and belief in vaccines but writes America cannot “abandoned evidence-based medicine.” He continues: “Scientists are tasked with both developing and evaluating drugs and vaccines, and it is important to separate these two important roles. Scientists evaluating drug and vaccine safety should not take money from pharmaceutical companies.” Dr. Kulldorff is a former Professor of Medicine at Harvard University and was a co-author of the Great Barrington Declaration. Dr. Martin Kulldorff— Former Professor of Medicine at Harvard University and Mass General Brigham—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his latest editorial for City Journal, “Harvard Tramples the Truth.” Dr. Kulldorff was fired from Harvard University for speaking out against mandatory vaccinations and publicly questioning the validity of widespread lockdowns. He writes: “Almost everyone now realizes that school closures and other lockdowns, were a colossal mistake. Francis Collins has acknowledged his error of singularly focusing on Covid without considering collateral damage to education and non-Covid health outcomes. That's the honest thing to do, and I hope this honesty will reach Harvard. The public deserves it, and academia needs it to restore its credibility. Science cannot survive in a society that does not value truth and strive to discover it. The scientific community will gradually lose public support and slowly disintegrate in such a culture. The pursuit of truth requires academic freedom with open, passionate, and civilized scientific discourse, with zero tolerance for slander, bullying, or cancellation. My hope is that someday, Harvard will find its way back to academic freedom and independence.” You can read the full article here: https://www.city-journal.org/article/harvard-tramples-the-truth

The injuries to NCLA's clients—Drs. Jayanta Bhattacharya, Aaron Kheriaty, and Martin Kulldorff, and Ms. Jill Hines—supplied standing for many of the arguments made in the courtroom, urging the Court to uphold the injunction in defense of Americans' First Amendment rights. In this episode, Mark and Vec discuss the oral argument and the case. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr. Jonathan Howard and Wendy Orent take a deep dive into the controversial Great Barrington Declaration, a document that has stirred significant debate in the public health community. This declaration, penned by Dr. Sunita Gupta of Oxford, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya of Stanford, and Dr. Martin Kulldorff of Harvard, proposes a pandemic response strategy centered on achieving herd immunity through natural infection, particularly among younger, healthier populations. The Underestimation of COVID-19 At the heart of the episode is a critical examination of how the declaration's authors may have underestimated the severity of COVID-19. The hosts reflect on early pandemic opinions, including those from John Ioannidis and Dr. Scott Atlas, that influenced the declaration. They discuss the implications of pursuing herd immunity without a vaccine and the potential risks to public health, especially considering the virus's impact on different age groups. Ethical Concerns and Scientific Debate A significant part of the discussion focuses on the ethical dilemmas posed by the declaration. The idea of intentionally allowing a segment of the population to be infected raises serious moral questions. The hosts challenge the notion that young people have an obligation to contract the virus, likening it to a "war" against COVID-19. The Role of Dr. Scott Atlas Dr. Scott Atlas, a prominent figure in the Trump administration's COVID-19 response, is also discussed. His support for natural infection as a pathway to herd immunity is critically examined, with the hosts highlighting his statements from various interviews and articles. The Impact of Herd Immunity Without Vaccination The episode does not shy away from discussing the historical context of herd immunity and its effectiveness in managing pandemics. The hosts argue that without vaccination, achieving lasting herd immunity may be an unattainable goal, citing examples from the history of diseases like measles and smallpox. Final Words In conclusion, the episode provides a comprehensive critique of the Great Barrington Declaration, emphasizing the need for a nuanced, ethical, and scientifically sound approach to pandemic management. The discussion underscores the complexities of public health decision-making in times of crisis and the importance of basing strategies on robust scientific evidence and ethical considerations.   Resources mentioned The Great Barrington Declaration Interviews and articles by Dr. Sunita Gupta, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, and Dr. Martin Kulldorff John Ioannidis's Stat News article from March 17, 2020 Dr. Bhattacharya's Wall Street Journal article, "Is the Coronavirus as Deadly as They Say?" World-class gymnast, author, filmmaker, and next-in-line to become CEO of Levi Strauss, Jennifer Sey talks pandemic-era school lockdowns and the backlash she received for speaking out against the school shutdowns with Bill Walton. Jennifer was a seven-time member of the U.S. Women's National Gymnastics Team and the 1986 U.S. Women's All-Around National Champion. Her transition from the world of sports to the corporate arena saw her rise to a pivotal leadership role at Levi Strauss, contributing significantly to its resurgence. Along the way, she produced a documentary “Athlete A”  and wrote a book “Chalked up”  exposing the abuse of children and young women gymnasts that spurred radical change in the sport. Sey was ostracized in deep blue San Francisco for publicly opposing the closures of schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. She felt compelled to speak out for the children whose development and education were detrimentally affected by the isolation of virtual school. Levi Strauss top management and the board told her to shut up or leave.  So she left. “I think what people failed to predict, which I saw from the beginning, societally, we sent children the message that their education was not a priority, that they were not a priority, and in fact, if they missed things like having friends and an everyday life and key milestones, like graduations and football games, they were selfish, horrible people. Imagine what that does to a child's psyche. So, now, the depression, the anxiety persists, not surprisingly, and we're seeing record high levels of absenteeism,” Sey said. She is now determined to make these effects clear to the American public with a documentary film titled Generation COVID. The documentary will highlight the stories of ten different families and the struggles of their children in the post-pandemic education environment. The damage to be wreaked upon children by school closures was abundantly clear to many of us at the time.  “But the mainstream outlets like the New York Times vilified any dissenters,” reminds Jennifer. “Even renowned doctors, people like Dr. Jay Bhattacharya from Stanford, Martin Kulldorff from Harvard, Sunetra Gupta from Oxford. These are not fringe scientists or fringe epidemiologists, but they were shunned and delegitimized by the mainstream press.” Yet seemingly forgetting the principal role it played in keeping the lockdowns in place, we now read this from the New York Times: “The evidence is now in, and it is startling,” it exclaims. “The school closures that took 50 million children out of classrooms at the start of the pandemic may prove to be the most damaging disruption in the history of American education.” There's a lot to be answered for here, starting with the amnesiac NYT. This episode is more than just a conversation; it is a call to arms.

The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (03/01/2023): 3:05pm- On Tuesday, Dr. Marty Makary (Johns Hopkins University), Dr. Jay Bhattacharya (Stanford University), and Dr. Martin Kulldorff (Harvard University) testified before a House Select Subcommittee on the coronavirus crisis. During the hearing, Dr. Makary said it was a “no brainer” that the COVID-19 pandemic arose from a laboratory leak in Wuhan, China. Dr. Makary also accused the United States government of being the “greatest perpetrator of misinformation during the pandemic.” 3:20pm- While testifying before a House Select Subcommittee on the coronavirus crisis, Harvard Medical School Professor Dr. Martin Kulldorff said that the COVID-19 “vaccine fanatics” have done more to undermine trust in general vaccination than any group in American history. He also condemned government officials for mandating vaccination while forgetting the effectiveness of natural immunity. 3:45pm- Who Won Social Media? Isn't it a little early for this? 4:05pm- According to a report from the U.S. Coast Guard, another dead whale has been spotted off the coast of New Jersey. Fox News estimates that 13 whales have washed ashore on the Atlantic Coast since December 2022. Many environmental experts believe the sudden, drastic uptick in whale deaths is linked to offshore wind development's usage of sonar. Why doesn't New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy do something to halt this disturbing trend? 4:25pm- On Wednesday, Attorney General Merrick Garland testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee's hearing on Justice Department oversight. During the hearing, AG Garland was hammered by Senators Mike Lee (R-UT) and Josh Hawley (R-MO) for the Justice Department's over-the-top arrest of Mark Houck. Houck is the pro-life father charged with violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act for protesting outside of an abortion clinic and was notably arrested at his home during an FBI raid. The egregious, authoritarian-style arrest understandably left his wife and children horrified. A Pennsylvania jury found Houck not guilty. 4:50pm- While speaking with Brett Baier on Fox News, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray refused to definitively state that no FBI official played a role outside of law enforcement during the January 6th Capitol riots. 5:00pm- The Drive at 5: Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot loses her bid for reelection. PLUS Dr. Wilfred Reilly—Professor of Political Science at Kentucky State University & Author of “Taboo: 10 Facts You Can't Talk About”—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss a recent Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) survey indicating that 40% of liberal professors are afraid of losing their jobs over a misunderstanding. In his most recent National Review editorial, “Why ‘National Divorce' is An Insanely Bad Idea.” Dr. Reilly writes, “[w]e talk a lot about ‘red' and ‘blue' states, but these are election-year terms of art arising from the dirty business of political consulting: In reality, almost no American state slants more than 60 percent in either direction, and the real division is between red and blue counties within each one”—ultimately arguing in favor of renewed appreciation for federalism. You can read the article at: https://www.nationalreview.com/2023/02/why-national-divorce-is-an-insanely-bad-idea/ 5:40pm- While speaking with Jake Tapper on CNN, comedian Bill Maher mocked progressives for claiming to like diversity while concurrently doing everything in their power to silence diverse ideas. 6:00pm- On Tuesday, the United States Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Biden v. Nebraska & Department of Education v. Brown—the cases will determine whether the executive branch has the unilateral authority to cancel over $400 billion in student loan debt via power granted by the 2003 HEROES Act. ABC News, CBS News, and NBC News all grumbled about the possibility that conservative justices would scuttle President Biden's plan to “bailout” indebted college students. 6:30pm- Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre why President Joe Biden is seemingly afraid of China—citing Biden's reluctance to punish China for the COVID-19 laboratory leak in Wuhan and the Chinese reconnaissance balloon that traversed the continental United States. 6:40pm- While speaking with Brett Baier on Fox News, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray said he believes, based upon FBI findings, that the COVID-19 pandemic originated via a laboratory leak in Wuhan, China. During the interview, Wray denied that the FBI played a role in censoring the Hunter Biden laptop.   6:50pm- On Tuesday, Dr.
