Kristen Gale's life went from zero to TEN real quick.  After she got fired a second time from her second internship (who even knew unpaid interns could get fired?) she took a fortuitous wrong turn on Queen Street West in Toronto,  and the neighborhood's "pearls of promise" set her into action.  Almost overnight, her concept of a beauty bar that had the efficiency of low-end nail salons with the standards of high-end spas became THE TEN SPOT. Kristen tells it all as it happened;  how her business has evolved into an international franchise model over the past 17 + years, big learnings, shower-cry moments and what she still loves most about The TEN SPOT.  In this conversation, we discuss: How The TEN SPOT went from idea to construct A detailed account of how she secured financing (because it shouldn't be a secret that most businesses require MONEY) The jump from one location to many Stumbling onto the notion that she had created the foundation for a franchise business Growth moments that came from "dumb-dumb" mistakes all the way through The absolute power of asking questions Self awareness and self belief ...And so much more. This weeks guest is Shamez Amlani. Having grown up in Toronto, 19 year old Shamez got a summer job as a busser at Le Select Bistro on Queen Street West back in 1989. Little did he know this was the beginning of a lifelong career in the restaurant industry. Quickly moving into his favourite position behind the bar, he found his passion creating opportunities for strangers to meet and setting the scene in that third place - not home, not work, where one can be free. After extensive travels in Europe and a return home to hone his knowledge as waiter and bartender, Shamez re-located to Paris in '93 to start a new life. There he managed a small bar while continuing to travel and have many adventures touring with a band, pretending to be a writer, teaching English, eventually returning to Toronto in '97. He came back to Le Select as bar manager while his new life partner Maria Flawia Litwin forged a career as fashion designer and eventually contemporary artist. By the time 2000 had come around, he realized the only thing to do next was open a place of his own, so with friend and chef Mike Harrington and Maria, they opened La Palette in Kensington Market, imagining that their humble French Bistro would last a year, maybe two. Instead, the place became well entrenched in the neighbourhood and Shamez discovered a passion for community activism while helping to create Pedestrian Sundays, car-free neighbourhood celebrations where street food and live music were king. In 2005 they bought out their chef partner and continued to push the boundaries of what a restaurant could be as they laid down deeper roots in Toronto. When the lease came up for renewal, La Palette cast its net wider and opened a second, bigger and more ambitious place on Shamez's old stomping grounds of Queen West. After closing the original location, he vowed never to run two businesses at the same time again, a promise he couldn't keep. In addition to running the new place with tall ceilings, open kitchen, and a long bar, La Palette was also involved with an artist collective called Fedora Upside Down where he ran the bar and catering at legendary events that brought thousands of people together to celebrate diverse global music traditions. All of these inspirations came together with the birth of a new venue a block away, Drom Taberna in 2018. It was an Eastern European Tavern that was casual and affordable with live world music every day and a kitchen that stays open very late. Maria and Shamez invited some of their staff to be partners in the business with the opportunity to work off their share with sweat equity. It quickly became a staple on a street known for great bars and live music venues. Drom is as much a community centre as it is a venue, for the staff and artists that fill the space with great vibes and the public that find it to be an incredibly safe, multicultural and queer friendly space. When the pandemic hit, everyone involved with the two places was too stubborn to quit, having lived the immigrant experience which held creative problem solving and perseverance as core tenets. La Palette became a wine shop and Drom a deli and grocery store, with both places staying a moving target while navigating outdoor dining, repeated lockdowns and re-openings, and insurmountable economic and emotional hardships. Now, both places continue to be vibrant cultural hubs where you'll usually find Shamez at his favourite place behind the bar at La Palette, enjoying the buzz of a busy night, or on the dance floor by the stage at Drom. One couldn't ask for a better job, making fun for so many friends and strangers alike. Step back in time to 1984. It's a pivotal year in the history of Canadian television — it's the year Much Music was born. In this episode of Chatter that Matters, we look at its fascinating journey and Canadian content that competed with the best in the world.   Much Music was one of the first Canadian specialty channels; this ground-breaking concept emerged from the vision of two trailblazing individuals, Moses Znaimer and John Martin. Against all odds, with limited resources but boundless creativity, they created a cultural phenomenon that captured Canadians' hearts and took on the mighty MTV.   I recorded the show at 299 Queen Street West, where it all came together, and sat down with two of Much Music's iconic VJs, Erica Ehm and Rick Campanelli. Erica takes listeners on a nostalgic journey as she recounts the early days, what it was like to interview legendary figures such as Kurt Cobain, and how what she learned there enabled her to become a successful entrepreneur. Meanwhile, Rick shares his remarkable journey of securing his dream job through a contest and turning that win into his phenomenal broadcasting career.   Together, Erica and Rick transport us back to an era when Canadian content reigned supreme, and Much Music was at the forefront of this cultural revolution. Discover the untold stories, challenges, and sheer passion fuelled this channel's meteoric rise. A moment in time that will stand the test of time.   Alan Depencier, the CMO of RBC, joins the show and puts on a master class on what it takes to create content that engages your audience in an era of infinite choice and discerning tastes.   It is a beautiful story, a proud moment for Canadian creativity, and some outstanding takeaways.   Time Codes:   00:01.      Tony's opening 00:02:16  Erica and Rick recall their time at Much Music. 00:06:33  Moses Znaimer reinvented media, inspired entrepreneurship, encouraged creativity. 00:08:33 Leaders in the corporate world should embody the flexibility, creativity, and fluidity exhibited by Moses, challenging the traditional thinking of "my way or the highway" embraced by old white men. Erica suggests that Tony should run more businesses or coach individuals, as he has demonstrated the ability to inspire and empower others in the past, much like Moses. 00:12:15 Erica Ehm and Rick Campanelli discuss their favorite interviews and an upcoming interactive tour based on the Documentary 299 Queen Street West. 00:18:25 Rick dreams of being like Erica and Steve, but it seems impossible. Enjoyed watching the interviews and VJ's behavior. 00:21:33 Rick - I wanted to win the contest tied to the movie "The Temp" in 1993. 00:24:10 Rick sits at Erica's desk.  Never again.  00:28:15 The lesson: Find your own path in life, don't follow others. 00:32:03 Erica on her role with 299 Queen Street West. It was an nteresting experience meeting new and old people for a documentary. Initially skeptical, but became a consulting producer. The finished product exceeded expectations. 00:35:05  Rick flies to Austin to be there for the premier. . 00:37:30 Rick's humility and talent were exceptional, inspiring a lesson for everyone. In a world focused on validation and self-promotion, we should embrace humility. Canadians can produce world-class content, even with limited resources. 00:42:44 Alan Depencier joins the show.  Music is returning after COVID, with live events sponsored by RBCX featuring renowned artists and supporting lesser-known ones. RBCX offers profile, support, and guidance for artists' careers. 00:44:03 Grateful for Alan's presence, future endeavours mentioned.

Iconic Canadian television station MuchMusic was the little channel that could, surviving in the face of long odds to thrive and make a massive cultural impact in both their home country and around the world. Film maker Sean Menard is capturing the unique and bold times of the stations early years in his documentary "299 Queen Street West", the physical home of MuchMusic for most of it's lifetime. One of the key components of the movie is the interview with the legendary group of VJs that were on the ground floor for the kickoff of MuchMusic as the station sought to establish themselves in those early days. That includes such former WTM guests as Christopher Ward and Erica Ehm, and this episodes visitor, the fabulous Michael Williams. Michael Williams brought a level of cool and class to MuchMusic that was vital to establishing the station's vibe, and there's lots of talk on this episode of the We Talk Music podcast about those times, the documentary, and what Michael Williams is up to no. Chapter 119: Steve Toltz on refining writing rituals and raising ravenous readers

What is your favorite novel?   It's a hard question. A big question! A question that makes most people hmmm for a while before they get to an answer. If they get to an answer! But I think I know mine. My favorite novel is A Fraction of a Whole by Steve Toltz.   First, the book came to me in an interesting way. I walked into wonderful indie bookstore Type on Queen Street West in downtown Toronto a couple days before my wedding to Leslie. I was looking for a good book to take on my honeymoon. (Insert obvious joke: "You wanted to read on your honeymoon?" But yes. I did. We did!)   I spent two or three hours with incredible bookseller Kalpna who painstakingly picked book after book off the shelf working through my way-too-long list of criteria: the book couldn't be too heavy, it couldn't be too *physically* large, but it also had to last the trip because I only had one tiny bag so, you know, it had to simultaneously be fairly dense. And it had to be fiction. And it had to be fast-paced. And it would be good if it was funny. And, and, and...   Well, Kalpna (bless her) kept pulling books off the shelves and I kept doing The First Five Pages Test to check every book for pace, tone, rhythm, style, and language. I must have flipped through a few dozen books before I ended up with A Fraction of a Whole by Steve Toltz. A book I'd never heard of! By a guy I'd never heard of!   Why? Well, the first sentence pulled me in: “You never hear about a sportsman losing his sense of smell in a tragic accident and for good reason; in order for the universe to teach excruciating lessons that we are unable to apply in later life, the sportsman must lose his legs, the philosopher his mind, the painter his eyes, the musician his ears, the chef his tongue.” I kept reading and it just took off from there. Piles of accolades littered across the jacket helped too: “Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize”, "Finalist for The Guardian First Book Award", "Deserves a place next to The Confederacy of Dunces" (Wall Street Journal), "Soars like a rocket!" (LA Times), "A comic masterpiece!" (Ottawa Citizen) and on and on...   I fell deep into Steve's Toltz's absurd world of endless turns and surprise pearls of wisdom and spent years since then trying to land this interview with him! He is a deep and focused writer who is well off social media and doesn't do "the rounds" so it took some time. I emailed him some of my favorite lines from his books, sat in the front row to hear him speak at the International Festival of Authors, and waited -- just waited! -- for his next novel to come out so I could try again. And now it finally has...   Steve Toltz was born in 1972 in Sydney, Australia and he is the Man Booker-shortlisted award-winning novelist of three books including A Fraction of the Whole (2008), Quicksand (2016), and his newest Here Goes Nothing (2022). I personally recommend starting with A Fraction of the Whole because it was so deeply affecting to me and many folks I've recommended it to, but all three contain his wholly original sideways genius that constantly amazes and surprises.   Steve has lived in Montreal, Vancouver, New York, Barcelona, Paris, and Los Angeles and worked as a cameraman, telemarketer, security guard, private investigator, teacher, screenwriter, and, well, a lot more. I'm not sure he's right but he says in this interview: "If you want to become a novelist you sort of have to be a loser for a while.”   I was so excited to talk to Steve Toltz and we go deep on many things including: fear of death, Woody Allen, writing by hand in two-hour chunks, finding your voice, anonymity and success, Russian Literature, how to avoid quitting, how to start big projects, raising readers, books for boys, and, of course, the incredible Steve Toltz's 3 most formative books.   It is my privilege, pleasure, and honor to share this conversation. As always, I'll be in your left ear, Steve will be in your right, and we pull up a chair between us for you to come on in...   Let's flip the page into Chapter 119 now…   What You'll Learn: What does fear of death make us do? What are the different ways authors develop character in a novel? What is the value of a reading list? What is the connection between Woody Allen and Russian Literature? What misconceptions do we have about classical literature? What is Steve's writing process? What is the power of writing by hand? What does it mean to write with your subconscious? What is a writer's voice? How do writer's deal with anonymity and success? How do we not quit big projects? How can we learn to accept criticism? How do we separate the art from the artist? How do you raise a reader? What are the best books for young boys? It's the third and final Police Picnic on August 5, 1983, once again at CNE stadium as well as the 4th and final consecutive summer of attending a huge, open air festival.  This time around the fest featured James Brown, Peter Tosh, King Sunny Adé, Blue Peter, and The Fixx along with the titular hosts. While the first fest ran overlong but otherwise smoothly, the 1982 edition was the worst concert experience of my lifetime, even if the music was good. As was also the case with 1982, this 1983 excursion came complete with a drug misadventure …. wait, scratch that last bit. What's the opposite of “misadventure”?  For this episode, not only will Special Guests aka Phil Robinson be re-joining in looking back on this event, his pal from back in the day, Noelle, also joins us in this episode. The two of them went to festival along with a group of people and reconnect live for the first time since the 80s, and help each other piece together their experiences from that day. So, it's a first for the podcast, with a 3-way interview and reminiscence.   We not only recall the show but also touch on late-night speakeasys, mammaried Police enthusiasts, how lucky we were to have The New Music, import 45s, and where did Simple Minds play here in London in the early 80s? Tune in dear listeners for a euphoric day of great music, accidently taking narcotics, being trapped in a revolving door, smashed porcelain smokers on Queen Street West, and a goodbye to the tea-drinking Police, who were in Synchronicity with the world at that moment.  Click here to read the original 2011 blog entry. Next on Stage -->: Join me next time as I recall one of my Top Three best shows I have ever seen here in my hometown of London, Ontario, Canada, when the one, the only, the legendary & the regal Marianne Faithfull grants us an audience on a packed-to-the-rafters Fryfogles on a steamy, August night. This hotly anticipated showwas a distinctly more intimate experience than the Police Picnic.  By this point in time, the former ‘60s pop icon and former Jagger paramour was in the final throes of a triumphant, early ‘80s comeback, triggered by her late 1979 LP Broken English, one of the true all-time classics.  At this point in '83, she was touring her third Island disc, A Child's Adventure. Conveniently, she began her tour at my local watering hole. Indeed, this date kicked off her first-ever Canadian tour, with London lucking into hosting this debut performance. Join me next time for thigh-slappin' rhythms, backstage gossip, contented smiles and … dangerous acquaintances. 021. The Velvet Underground's John Cale comes to Fryfogle's and plays an intense, riveting solo set in June 1983.  It was particularly extraordinary for me that I finally got to see him at this point in time, not only because I was way deep in Velvets-mania in the early 80s — with all the original Velvets albums finally being widely and easily available, arriving alongside “Edie: An American Biography” — but also because I ended up sitting cross-legged on the stage about two feet in front of Cale as he performed.  Indeed, this was the best seat I have ever had at a live show! And I thought I'd had it good during the previous fall when I got to park my elbows on centre stage during a Joe Jackson show (EP 19).Tune in for a disciplined bladder, a set list of my dreams, and being able to see the pores on John Cale's face. Go to mylifeinconcert.com to read the original 2011 blog entry.  Next on Stage --> It's the third and final Police Picnic on August 5, 1983, once again at CNE stadium as well as the 4th and final consecutive summer of attending a huge, open air festival. While the first fest ran overlong but otherwise smoothly, the 1982 edition was the worst concert experience of my lifetime, even if the music was good. As also was the case with 1982, this 1983 excursion came complete with a drug misadventure …. wait, scratch that last bit. Gregg Tilston and Karim Kanji welcome to the program Martha Johnson and Mark Gane, founding members of Martha and the Muffins, Martha and the Muffins emerged from the early punk/new wave/art pop scene in 1977 which was centered around various clubs along Toronto's Queen Street West and the Ontario College of Art. Since then, the band has released seven studio albums, three of which they co-produced with Daniel Lanois. The songs they worked on together included the ground breaking singles “Women Around The World At Work”, “Danseparc”, “Black Stations/White Stations”, “Come Out And Dance” and “Cooling The Medium”. This week we are joined by Angela Aiello for a terrific conversation on all things wine. ANGELA AIELLO Wine Expert, Journalist, Educator and On-Air Host Contact information: ask@superwinegirl.com Website: www.superwinegirl.com IG: @SuperWineGirl Who Is Angela Aiello Angela Aiello has been changing the world of wine for the past 20 years. Seeking to make wine endlessly fascinating, she goes by the moniker “Super Wine Girl” and is currently the TV host for the CTV Morning Live, CHCH Morning Live, Dine & Dash Radio and has spent the last decade hosting on-air wine segments for TV and radio. Angela has regular wine columns in Horizon magazine, WanderEater.com and ViewtheVibe.com. She also hosts “The Juice,” her very own wine show and is a freelance consultant and journalist. What has she done? At the age of 25, Angela Aiello founded one of the most engaging wine clubs for millennials in Canada. This was the start of her journey to democratize wine, which she has continued to do since 2006 (coincidentally it started at the beginning of the social media boom). Her wine club was based in Toronto, Canada and focused on educating wine enthusiasts. Angela has been curating hundreds of wine tasting events and also ran a wine institute for 10 years. She believes we are no now in a Wine Renaissance period - where wine is finally modernizing itself with the times. Angela has taught countless wine school classes and even hosted fun and celebrated classes like “how to Saber”. She has helped thousands of Canadians learn about wine in a non-pretentious, yet educational way both in person and also now virtually. She is a trailblazer, fearless entrepreneur and is dedicated to helping grow and change the global wine community. Before the pandemic, she owned two hip wine venues, one a ‘wine cave' on Queen Street West and a second private event space in a townhouse on King Street West. Her not for profit work includes: Angela currently has an on-going campaign that highlights #WinesThatGiveBack and she has also sat on the Board of Directors for Femmes du Vin, a not-for-profit organization that supports women in the wine trade. She was an integral part of the “Don't Poke the Bear” wine launch campaign in Canada, which won an ELSI award from the LCBO and in 2018, she became part of the PIWOSA Women in Wine community where she volunteered her time to work a harvest in Stellenbosch, South Africa. She also has shared her entrepreneurial story as part of the Fuckup Alumni community of speakers who share their business stories to support other entrepreneurs. Other Things about her: She can often be found sitting on industry panels, openly sharing lessons and learnings from her years of experience and sipping coffee with someone new in the industry helping them with connections and referrals. She will donate her time, knowledge and wine expertise to many of the not-for-profit community organizations in Toronto, to bridge wine with new and emerging cultures, events and audiences. She believes in bringing alternative voices into the world of wine and changing the industry to a more inclusive and diverse space. She is a creative writer working on her memoir and loves to interview chefs, sommeliers and celebrities including names like John Malkovich, Christine Cushing, Priyanka Chopra, DLynn Proctor, and Max Riedel just to name a few. She hosted Nelson Mandela's Daughter and granddaughter in her wine cave when their wines launched in Ontario, is a social media influencer, travel and culinary enthusiast and amatuer photographer. Angela grew up in Niagara, Canada and began her career at Vineland Estates WInery and Peller Estates winery, both 4 diamond restaurants.
