Nadia Struiwigh is a producer, live artist, DJ and resident of Tresor. Her music spans ambient, electro and techno and has been featured on labels like Nous'klaer Audio, Dekmantel and Central Processing Unit. In 2024 she founded the label Distorted Waves focussing on hardware-centered, more experimental works. Her DJ sets explore driving and psychedelic techno, while also delving into deeper sounds, while her live sets are known for their unique sonic improvisation. “An ode to the sounds and storytelling I'll continue to explore from here on out. After the pandemic, I felt a bit unmoored. Spending time in Australia distanced me from the European scene, and I found myself feeling quite lost. Once I returned, I initially focused on Techno, but soon realized my true foundation has always been experimental music and narrative-driven performances—whether in my own productions, live sets, or DJ sets. I'm grateful to have rediscovered my creative center, and I'm excited to share this next chapter. I'm fully back, with more jungle and ambient experimental releases on the way! Thanks for your support, love always x ” Follow https://soundcloud.com/nadiastruiwigh https://www.instagram.com/nadiastruiwigh https://www.facebook.com/NadiaStruiwigh/

From deep pools of ambience to the brain-feeding mechanisms of electro and techno, Nadia Struiwigh's gift is in expressing herself with conviction through her machines. As an accomplished live artist and producer, her affinity for synthesis and sequencing results in a spellbinding strain of electronica drawn from a richly personal sonic space she has marked out for herself. Struiwigh's recorded output has appeared on labels like Central Processing Unit, Nous'klaer Audio and Dekmantel - albums and EPs which reach from crunchy sequenced beats to vast swathes of pure, melodic tones. Her roots in Rotterdam and current location in Berlin equally speak to her affinity for techno - propulsive, dynamic machinations which manifest in DJ sets as well as live hardware performances. As a teenager enthralled with the Warp school of electronica and leftfield downtempo, Struiwigh was set on a path of discovery where the intricacy of production met with her impassioned, intuitive approach to composition. Her exacting approach to the technical aspects of the craft has earned her the knowledge to extract her own voice from any medium, but more importantly her music emerges from a very human need to communicate and connect. That connection is best manifested outside the studio. Struiwigh's live sets range from patient, beatless immersions to kinetic peak-time rushes, sometimes straddling the divide in line with her omnivorous passion for ambient and techno alike. At times she'll present her released works in a more patient, listening setting, while for the sensory overload of the dancefloor she tends towards a more improvised, open-ended approach to techno and electro. The exact make up of her live rig changes from gig to gig, keeping her inspired and ensuring no two performances are the same. High-profile shows in concert halls sit alongside strobe lit club sessions - she's since become a resident DJ for Tresor to indulge her love of driving, psychedelically-charged techno, while warm-up sets give her the chance to indulge the deeper dimensions of the music she loves. The range of her tastes can be heard across leading platforms such as RA, Phantasy, Bleep and Red Light Radio, who have all invited her to their esteemed mix series'. Plugged into the moment and constantly exploring new dimensions of her sound, Struiwigh champions electronic music as a springboard for possibilities. With an exquisite clarity which comes from both technical skill and clear-eyed intention, her music thrives on heart and experimentation, powered by machines with as much character as the human at the controls. The federal government is subjected to thousands of cyberattacks a day.  When you combine that statistic with the tremendous gap in people that need to be hired for cyber defense, you can see the problem that is developing. One way is to gain a better understanding of malicious actors move from network to cloud and then expand into a system.  The log information is all there, the problem is that there is so much of it, a human doesn't have a chance of trying to get a handle on the attack vectors taking place. When it comes to processing enormous amounts of information, the classic Central Processing Unit has limitations.  One way around this limiting factor is to use a Graphical Processing Unit, or a GPU.  Today, systems architects are designing systems that can cluster thousands of GPUs to accomplish this tremendous task.  There are some systems with 10,000 GPUs processing large amounts of data. During the interview, Bartley Richarson talks about the role nVidia has in understanding the people attacking the federal government.  He outlines basic concepts like data preparation, model training, and visualization.  When presented with mountains of data and an incredible demand on compute, systems can be structured to help federal managers accelerate time to insight. The basic example used is determining a best path for a firefighter to follow.  There is a better example in outer space.  For example, a traditional satellite will gather data and relay that data to a ground station. From there, it will be relayed to a place where the analysis is done. Each step along the way takes time. One approach is to have a satellite that can do autonomous board data fusion in space.  From there, it can use artificial intelligence to relay information to the federal government.  This can be as pedestrian as a traffic report to a wide range of military intelligence.

The History of Computing
The Von Neumann Architecture

The History of Computing

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 12, 2021 12:24

John Von Neumann was born in Hungary at the tail end of the Astro-Hungarian Empire. The family was made a part of the nobility and as a young prodigy in Budapest, He learned languages and by 8 years old was doing calculus. By 17 he was writing papers on polynomials. He wrote his dissertation in 1925 he added to set theory with the axiom of foundation and the notion of class, or properties shared by members of a set. He worked on the minimax theorem in 1928, the proof of which established zero-sum games and started another discipline within math, game theory. By 1929 he published the axiom system that led to Von Neumann–Bernays–Gödel set theory. And by 1932 he'd developed foundational work on ergodic theory which would evolve into a branch of math that looks at the states of dynamical systems, where functions can describe a points time dependence in space. And so he of course penned a book on quantum mechanics the same year. Did we mention he was smart and given the way his brain worked it made sense that he would eventually gravitate into computing. He went to the best schools with other brilliant scholars who would go on to be called the Martians. They were all researching new areas that required more and more computing - then still done by hand or a combination of hand and mechanical calculators. The Martians included De Hevesy, who won a Nobel prize for Chemistry. Von Kármán got the National Medal of Science and a Franklin Award. Polanyl developed the theory of knowledge and the philosophy of science. Paul Erdős was a brilliant mathematician who published over 1,500 articles. Edward Teller is known as the father of the hydrogen bomb, working on nuclear energy throughout his life and lobbying for the Strategic Defense Initiative, or Star Wars. Dennis Gabor wrote Inventing the Future and won a Nobel Prize in Physics. Eugene Wigner also took home a Nobel Prize in Physics and a National Medal of Science. Leo Szilard took home an Albert Einstein award for his work on nuclear chain reactions and joined in the Manhattan Project as a patent holder for a nuclear reactor. Physicists and brilliant scientists. And here's a key component to the explosion in science following World War II: many of them fled to the United States and other western powers because they were Jewish, to get away from the Nazis, or to avoid communists controlling science. And then there was Harsanyl, Halmos, Goldmark, Franz Alexander, Orowan, and John Kemeny who gave us BASIC. They all contributed to the world we live in today - but von Neumann sometimes hid how smart he was, preferring to not show just how much arithmetic computed through his head. He was married twice and loved fast cars, fine food, bad jokes, and was an engaging and enigmatic figure. He studied measure theory and broke dimension theory into algebraic operators. He studied topological groups, operator algebra, spectral theory, functional analysis and abstract Hilbert space. Geometry and Lattice theory. As with other great thinkers, some of his work has stood the test of time and some has had gaps filled with other theories. And then came the Manhattan project. Here, he helped develop explosive lenses - a key component to the nuclear bomb. Along the way he worked on economics and fluid mechanics. And of course, he theorized and worked out the engineering principals for really big explosions. He was a commissioner of the Atomic Energy Commission and at the height of the Cold War after working out game theory, developed the concept of mutually assured destruction - giving the world hydrogen bombs and ICBMs and reducing the missile gap. Hard to imagine but at the times the Soviets actually had a technical lead over the US, which was proven true when they launched Sputnik. As with the other Martians, he fought Communism and Fasciscm until his death - which won him a Medal of Freedom from then president Eisenhower. His friend Stanislaw Ulam developed the modern Markov Chain Monte Carlo method and Von Neumann got involved in computing to work out those calculations. This combined with where his research lay landed him as an early power user of ENIAC. He actually heard about the machine at a station while waiting for a train. He'd just gotten home from England and while we will never know if he knew of the work Turing was doing on Colossus at Bletchley Park, we do know that he offered Turing a job at the Institute for Advanced Study that he was running in Princeton before World War II and had read Turing's papers, including “On Computable Numbers” and understood the basic concepts of stored programs - and breaking down the logic into zeros and ones. He discussed using ENIAC to compute over 333 calculations per second. He could do a lot in his head, but he wasn't that good of a computer. His input was taken and when Eckert and Mauchly went from ENIAC to EDVAC, or the Electronic Discrete Variable Calculator, the findings were published in a paper called “First Draft of a Report on the EDVAC” - a foundational paper in computing for a number of reasons. One is that Mauchly and Eckert had an entrepreneurial spirit and felt that not only should their names have been on the paper but that it was probably premature and so they quickly filed a patent in 1945, even though some of what they told him that went into the paper helped to invalidate the patent later. They considered these trade secrets and didn't share in von Neumann's idea that information must be set free. In the paper lies an important contribution, Von Neumann broke down the parts of a modern computer. He set the information for how these would work free. He broke down the logical blocks of how a computer works into the modern era. How once we strip away the electromechanical computers that a fully digital machine works. Inputs go into a Central Processing Unit, which has an instruction register, a clock to keep operations and data flow in sync, and a counter - it does the math. It then uses quick-access memory, which we'd call Random Access Memory, or RAM today, to make processing data instructions faster. And it would use long-term memory for operations that didn't need to be as highly available to the CPU. This should sound like a pretty familiar way to architect devices at this point. The result would be sent to an output device. Think of a modern Swift app for an iPhone - the whole of what the computer did could be moved into a single wafer once humanity worked out how first transistors and then multiple transistors on a single chip worked. Yet another outcome of the paper was to inspire Turing and others to work on computers after the war. Turing named his ACE or Automatic Computing Engine out of respect to Charles Babbage. That led to the addition of storage to computers. After all, punched tape was used for Colossus during the war and and punched cards and tape had been around for awhile. It's ironic that we think of memory as ephemeral data storage and storage as more long-term storage. But that's likely more to do with the order these scientific papers came out than anything - and homage to the impact each had. He'd write The Computer and the Brain, Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics, The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior, Continuous Geometry, and other books. He also studied DNA and cognition and weather systems, inferring we could predict the results of climate change and possibly even turn back global warming - which by 1950 when he was working on it was already acknowledged by scientists. As with many of the early researchers in nuclear physics, he died of cancer - invoking Pascal's wager on his deathbed. He died in 1957 - just a few years too early to get a Nobel Prize in one of any number of fields. One of my favorite aspects of Von Neumann was that he was a lifelong lover of history. He was a hacker - bouncing around between subjects. And he believed in human freedom. So much so that this wealthy and charismatic pseudo-aristocrat would dedicate his life to the study of knowledge and public service. So thank you for the Von Neumann Architecture and breaking computing down into ways that it couldn't be wholesale patented too early to gain wide adoption. And thank you for helping keep the mutually assured destruction from happening and for inspiring generations of scientists in so many fields. I'm stoked to be alive and not some pile of nuclear dust. And to be gainfully employed in computing. He had a considerable impact in both.

The central processing unit is the single most important component in a computer. That's not to denigrate all the other components because they're essential, too, but selecting the right CPU is a good first step when you're planning to buy or build a new computer. In Short Circuits: Internet service providers include a modem with the service, but you'll pay $10 to $15 per month to rent it. It's possible to save money by installing a modem that you own, but there's also a small risk involved. • Scammers use email, instant messages, and phone calls to steal your identity and your money, but some of the attempts are so poor that it's hard to believe anyone would fall for them. Let's listen to one. In Spare Parts (only on the website): Linux turned 30 in August, but I have stopped asking if this is the year of Linux. Anyone who uses the internet uses Linux every day, but don't expect it to take over the desktop anytime soon. Or ever. • After weeks of research, tinkering, and muttering, I have definitively found the cause of the problem that caused my primary computer to crash repeatedly. I should have figured it out sooner. • Twenty years ago: If you think computers are frustrating today, I have a story from 2001 that you may find to be reminiscent of problems you faced back then.

For Sydney-based Dutch artist Nadia Struiwigh, ambient is a way of life. It has always been a vehicle for her to convey memories and emotions in slow, absorbing, drawn-out movements that blur the lines between techno, industrial, and something else altogether. It is at the heart of what she does with IAMBient, where you can book online sound healing or spiritual coaching sessions. It often soundtracks the Twitch channel she runs from her studio, offering live sets, gear reviews and more. It has also formed the backbone of the two albums she has put out on Central Processing Unit and Denovali Records, as well as the new one that is due on Nous'klaer Audios later this year. But she can also do deep, sleek, beat-driven music that makes a physical impact. Her Oooso EP for Nous'klaer Audio in March showed that, and this week's mix backs it up. Over the course of an increasingly intense hour, she layers up pressurised drones and throbbing pads, static-laced synths lumpy drums that are constantly ascending. It makes for a distinctly linear sound; a meditation on rhythm and movement that cannot fail to hypnotise anyone who gives it their full attention.

Electro is within the very DNA of dance and electronic music itself, it emerged from that which came before, the likes of Kraftwerk and 80's hip hop remain as influential on the genre of the present as they were at the start. Plant43 is a producer who has dedicated much of his life in the pursuit of understanding and progression within the genre. Her has released music on the likes of Ai Records, Shipwrec, Semantica, Central Processing Unit and Frustrated Funk amongst others. His sound has evolved over many years, moving with the times yet never far from the music he first fell in love with. During the late nineties Plant43, real name Emile Facey, promoted parties in London showcasing both the best in up and coming and stalwart electro, connecting producers and dj's alike. This mix comes alongside the release of a new record on his own Plant43 label, an imprint which he founded in 2020 to release his own material.

For Avenue Red Podcast episode 139 we welcome Leeds-born and bred selector Barry Duke AKA Sputnik. Without doubt he is one the finest electro pilots out there, having a knowledge of the genre that is as vast as his music collection. Technically adept, his mixes are always fluid, free-flowing and exciting strides through the wilderness of true underground electro and techno, both old and new. "I'm a Leeds-based DJ who predominately plays techno and electro and has spun at various Leeds nights including the much-missed, by those who used to attend, Detatched, Future-Past, Tensile, Bistro Techno and Axiom. I've been a follower of Avenue Red for a few years now and was thinking of creating (or is it 'curating' nowadays?) a Detroit-flavoured mix that would fit in with the vibe I was getting from the mixes I'd listened to. I was hoping Alec would like the mix and host it. Pre-empting recording a mix on the off-chance, Alec messaged me and asked if I would like to get involved on his podcast. He'd been listening to my recent electro mixes and asked if I'd like to contribute a similar mix for Avenue Red. Of course I was chuffed to have been asked, accepted his request, and here is the result. Hope you enjoy!" The History of Computing

Welcome to the History of Computing Podcast, where we explore the history of information technology. Because understanding the past prepares us for the innovations of the future! Todays episode is about Alan Turing. Turing was an English mathematician, cryptanalyst, logician, and the reason he's so famous today is probably his work in computer science, being the father of what's often called artificial intelligence. He built the first true working general-purpose computer, although the first Turning-Complete computer would be the Z3 from Konrad Zuse in 1941. Turning was born in 1912. From a young age, he was kinda' weird, but really good at numbers and science. This started before he went to school and made for an interesting upbringing. Back then, science wasn't considered as important as it might be today and he didn't do well in many subjects in school. But in 1931 he went to King's college in Cambridge, where by 1935 he was elected a fellow. While there, he reimagined Kurt Gödel's limits of proof and computation to develop a model of computation now common known as the Turning machine, which uses an abstract machine to put symbols on a strip of tape based on some rules. This was the first example of a CPU, or Central Processing Unit. The model was simple and he would improve upon it throughout his career. Turning went off to Princeton from 1936 to 1938, where he was awarded a PhD in math, after having studied lambda calculus with Alonzo Church, cryptanalysis, and built built three of the four stages of an electro-mechanical binary multiplier, or a circuit built using binary adders that could multiply two binary numbers and tinkered with most everything he could get his hands on. To quote Turing: “We can only see a short distance ahead, but we can see plenty there that needs to be done.” He returned to Cambridge in 1939 and then went to Bletchley Park to do his part in the World War II effort. Here, he made five major cryptanalytical advances throughout the war, providing Ultra Intelligence. While at what was called Hut 8 he pwned the Enigma with the bombe, an electro-mechanical device used by the British cryptologists to help decipher German Enigma-machine-encrypted secret messages. The bombe discovered the daily settings of the Enigma machines used by the germans, including which set of rotors was used, their starting positions and the message key. This work saved over 10 million lives. Many of his cryptographic breakthroughs are used in modern algorithms today. Turing also went to the US during this time to help the Navy with encryption and while in the states, he went to Bell Labs to help develop secure speech devices. After the war, he designed the Automatic Computing Engine, what is now known as a Universal Turing machine. This computer used stored programs. He couldn't tell anyone that he'd already done a lot of this because of the Official Secrets Act and the classified nature of his previous work at Bletchley. The computer he designed had a 25 kilobytes of memory and a 1Megahertz processor and cost around 11,000 pounds at the time. In 1952, Turning was rewarded for all of his efforts by being prosecuted for homosexual acts. He chose chemical castration over prison and died two years later in 1954, of suicide. Alan Turing is one of the great minds of computing. Over 50 years later the British government apologized and he was pardoned by Queen Elizabeth. But one of the great minds of the computer era was lost. He gave us the Turing Pattern, Turning Reduction, Turing test, Turing machine and most importantly 10 million souls were not lost. People who had children and grandchildren. Maybe people like my grandfather, or yours. The Turing Award has been given annually by the Association for Computing Machinery since 1966 for technical or theoretical contributions in computing. He has more prizes, colleges, and building and even institutes named after him as well. And there's a movie, called The Imitation Game. And dozens of books detailing his life have been released since the records of his accomplishments during the war were unsealed. Every now and then a great mind comes along. This one was awkward and disheveled most of the time. But he had as big an impact on the advent of the computer age as any other single human. Next time you're in the elevator at work or talking to your neighbor and they seem a little bit… weird - just think… do they have a similar story. To quote Turing: “Sometimes it is the people no one can imagine anything of who do the things no one can imagine.” Thank you for tuning in to this episode of the History of Computing Podcast. We hope you can find the cryptographic message in the pod. And if not, maybe it's time to build your own bo

Australia’s foremost purveyor of weaponized electro, Jensen Interceptor. One of the brightest lights on the booming electro scene that’s seen a renaissance in the recent years, he first piqued the interest of DJs from Helena Hauff to Maceo Plex through releases on Boysnoize Records, Motorik! and Sheffield’s Central Processing Unit in recent years with his devastating brand of floor-focused electro, which ranged from mechanical electro-funk to mutant ghettotech. 2018 has since been a particularly prolific year for him as a producer. Real name Mikey Melas, he’s dropped no less than seven EPs, on labels including E-Beamz, Cultivated Electronics and Power Station, with productions built on a maturing of his distinctive sound. The end of the year also sees Melas put out his debut album on Maceo Plex’s Lone Romantic. Featuring collaborations with DeFekT, The Hacker and long-term collaborator Assembler Code, the ten-track LP is an ode to his mum, titled ‘Mother’. Read the full feature on djmag.com

Shock World Service 072: Constellation Swan by Chloe Frieda (Alien Jams) 22/11/17 London, United Kingdom http://www.shockworldservice.com 1. Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe & Ariel Kalma - Miracle Mile This whole album is amazing, a collaboration between Robert A. A. Lowe and Ariel Kalma called "We Know Each Other Now Somehow." It was released on RVNG in 2015. 2. Xordox - Diamonds This release came out this year on Editions Mego, a project helmed by JG Thirlwel with Noveller featured in three of the tracks. Shimmering synths morph into an intense horror soundtrack. 3. recsund - Hall of Waits This one is by my partner Clifford Sage, I also included a glimmer of this track at the very beginning of the mix, It's from his release Deadsounds V. 4. Charles Manier - Mesrop I have a few of Manier's records (an alias of Tadd Mullinix) and I always go back to them! Gritty, weird, EBM, industrial goodness, it's hard to pick one track from the record as there are so many great tracks to choose from. 5. Alek Stark - GC 4406 Alek Stark has an impressive discography, dating back to 2002, many of which I have yet to check out. This release on CPU is pretty solid, some beautiful electro here. 6. Reckonwrong - Morton This track is from Reckonwrong's release on Pinkman, it's a hard one to categorise. I love how this track unfolds, especially with the "I feel that my music is important" vocal sample. 7. Rings Around Saturn - Synchrotron Synthy perfection from this electro gem. 8. Jensen Interceptor- Carter's Green Factory Another one from the mighty Central Processing Unit, a Drexcyan beauty. 9. Dreams - Gut Bounce This one fits well amongst the Apron back-catalogue, with chugging acid lines and floating melodies. 10. Morphology - Darkstar (The Hacker Remix) This track is from a remix record with The Exaltics, JTC, Sync 24 and Deixis on the label Cultivated Electronics. Dark and brooding electro remix by the Hacker. 11. Echo 106 - From Brunnen to the Nile Euphoric electro, this is one of my favourites. 12. Wilted Woman - Heating Problem New record on Alien Jams :) 13. Terribilis - Alucarda Released on a Quantum Natives compilation "Seize the Means of Production," her set at the ICA this year was wonderful.
