We have some really exciting news to share before introducing this Wednesday episode (and ironically enough, we discussed the cost of diapers at the beginning of this one)! Are we ready for a recession!? The economy has been roaring for close to a decade and corrections are inevitable. We’re not saying to pay uber close attention to the news cycle and the different predictions of the market tanking, but it is good to be prepared. And even if an actual recession never occurs, getting our personal finances in shape will allow us to be prepared for short-term bumps in the road- whether they’re market related, or purely personal. Give this episode a listen to hear our top tips on how you should recession proof your finances. During this episode we both enjoyed a Resilience IPA by Sierra Nevada which you can find and learn all about on Untappd. A big thanks to Felipe in Chico CA for donating this delicious beer! And if you enjoyed this episode, be sure to subscribe and give us a quick review in Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts- we’d love to hear from you. Best friends out! On this episode of the Beer Here! Podcast, we discuss a personal favorite to our podcast, the english mild. We discuss the history of the style and sample to examples from Fuller's Brewery. News discussion covers a large fine issued to AB InBev, Sierra Nevada getting stiffed on their charity donations for Resilience IPA, and a sensible update to Texas beer law. We also go down bad memory lane and discuss the worst beers we have ever drank. Music as always is 'Son of an American' by the So So Glos. Thanks for listening and CHEERS!
Craft Brew News 5/31/19(Courtesy of Brewbound.com)New Jersey ABC Sets Restrictions on the Number of Events Craft Breweries Can HostThe New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) issued a revised special ruling earlier this week aimed at limiting the number of annual events breweries can host in their taprooms.Under the ruling issued Tuesday, the ABC said the state’s craft breweries can hold up to 25 “special events,” 25 “social affairs,” and 52 “private parties” annually inside their taprooms. Additionally, breweries are now allowed to sell their beer at 12 events a year outside of their taprooms.Citing concerns of bar and restaurant owners, the ABC first announced plans to impose restrictions on the number of events craft breweries could host in September 2018. The agency suspended that ruling days later amid pressure from craft brewers, state lawmakers and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy. In Tuesday’s revised ruling, the ABC said the new guidelines are an effort to “balance the concerns” of the state’s 100 licensed craft breweries with those of the state’s 6,000 retail licenses in an effort to create “stability” and “foster realistic competition.”Leaders from both of the state’s trade groups — the New Jersey Brewers Association and the Brewers Guild of New Jersey — called the latest ruling a “mixed bag.”Brewers Guild of New Jersey executive director Eric Orlando said while the ruling gives craft brewers some new privileges, it also adds more restrictive provisions.New Jersey Brewers Association executive director Alexis Degan said her organization plans to lobby lawmakers to remove the limits on the number of events breweries can host in their taprooms, as well as repeal other “antiquated” liquor laws.Sierra Nevada Asks Breweries to Honor Camp Fire PledgesSierra Nevada Brewing is still waiting for more than half of the breweries that agreed to brew Resilience IPA and donate the proceeds to the relief efforts of last year’s Camp Fire wildfire to submit their donations, according to a company letter.“Though we have and continue to do good work to get our community back on its feet, this is a long-term process,” Sierra Grossman, brewery co-owner and daughter of founder Ken Grossman, wrote in the letter, which was obtained by WorstBeerBlog. “Those funds you pledged are critical to continue our uphill battle.”Nearly 1,500 craft breweries signed up to brew Resilience IPA as part of Sierra Nevada’s efforts to raise money for the victims of Camp Fire wildfire, which killed 85 people, displaced tens of thousands of residents, and destroyed more than 18,800 structures.Sierra Nevada told Fortune that it is “actively working” with breweries “to establish realistic timelines for donations.”“We are however hopeful that those funds will be received as soon as possible so we can continue funding this essential work,” the company told the outlet.Earlier this year, Sierra Nevada estimated that the Resilience campaign could potentially raise as much as $15 million if the project’s 1,484 breweries produced to their stated commitment levels.Ex-MillerCoors VP Sentenced to Prison TimeFormer MillerCoors vice president of sales David Colletti was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison for bilking the country’s second-largest beer manufacturer out of more than $8 million over the course of a decade as part of a fraudulent scheme, according to Law 360.Colletti, who reached a plea deal in 2016, told authorities he recruited people to act as vendors on more than 200 phony invoices. Those fake invoices were then submitted to MillerCoors, which paid Colletti’s phony vendors, who split the proceeds with Colletti.Colletti had worked for MillerCoors for more than 30 years.Wormtown Brewery to Add 2nd Location at Gillette StadiumMassachusetts’ Wormtown Brewery today announced plans to open a second taproom, adjacent to the New England Patriots’ stadium, before the end of the summer.Wormtown managing partner David Fields said the Worcester-based craft brewery took control of a 4,000 sq. ft. space at Patriot Place — a shopping, dining and entertainment center near Gillette Stadium in Foxborough — from Battle Road Brewing Company, which had operated a pop-up taproom there during the latter half of 2018. “Sixteen million people go through Patriot Place on an annualized basis, and they come from not just Massachusetts, but all over New England and all over the country,” Fields said. “So there’s an opportunity to connect our brand to a whole bunch of people that may or may not have seen us before.”Wormtown has purchased a 7-barrel brewhouse for the facility, which will serve as an innovation hub. The company is hoping to open the Foxborough outpost ahead of the New England Patriots’ first exhibition game on August 22.The taproom also brings Wormtown closer to one of its biggest customers: Gillette Stadium. As for Wormtown, the company grew production 15 percent in 2018, to 24,615 barrels of beer. Through the first four months of 2019, Fields said the company’s volume is up about 40 percent. If those trends continue, the company could finish 2019 at around 33,000 barrels, he added.Wormtown’s flagship IPA, Be Hoppy, accounts for 86 percent of the company’s volume. However, initial sales of Don’t Worry IPA and Mass Whole Lager, two recently launched products, are strong.Mikkeller did this at City Field in NY.Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. Episode Notes Episode 42: 10th Anniversary Barrel Aged BlendIt’s the Two Minute Beer Review!I’m Andrew Burkum, and once again I’m your companion as we face down that massive craft brew aisle in search of the hidden treasures we’ve been missing out on all along. This week I have a very special episode for you. Dust Bowl Brewing, in Turlock, California, is one of my favorite breweries. They brew a ton of really great beers and do a great job of being tied to the community as well. If you’re a regular listener, you know that I’ve already reviewed several beers from Dust Bowl and got to sit down and chat live with some of the masterminds that keep the beer flowing. For that interview, just look up the episode we did on Dust Bowl’s Resilience IPA. All of this to say that this weekend Dust Bowl celebrated their 10th anniversary. So I am taking this moment to say thanks to the fine folks at Dust Bowl and a very happy anniversary from the Two Minute Beer Review. IN celebration, this week we’re going to take a look at Dust Bowl’s special edition 10th Anniversary Barrel Aged Blend. Does this wax-sealed wonder deliver on 10 years of experience? Let’s find out!The 10th anniversary blend pours a nice, inviting deep, dark brown. It’s crowned by a creamy tan head that hugs the surface of the brown depths. Immediately, there is a strong smell of molasses and brown sugar. The scent is deep and malty but there’s no hint of chocolate or coffee like you might expect out of a beer this dark. There is just a touch of bourbon in the nose—I’m sure that’s coming from the barrels in which the brew was aged. But what about the taste? This beer starts sweet and caramel up in the front of the mouth which immediately gives way to a wave of roasted malt flavor that washed over and through the entire mouth. There’s just a tiny bit of bitterness in the very back that’s balanced perfectly and keeps this strong beer from feeling too much like a dessert. There’s some fruit in there as well, deep and dark. The feeling of this beer in the mouth is very full and rich. It’s dense in both flavor and texture like a nice thick slice of dense cake would be. There’s the essence of the barrel there in the swallow as well, but it’s not overpowering the rich and complex flavors of the beer. This Barrel Aged Brew is complex, delicious and most importantly different from anything else that’s hanging around out there right now. The masters at Dust Bowl have put their experience to good use and have created a masterpiece. And at a 12% ABV you’ll only need one if you know what I mean!Well that’s all for this week, but I hope you’ll join me next week as I rejoin our friends at Hapa’s brewing and try out their Pillars of Creation Double IPA. Does this one have all the energy necessary to give birth to a new star? We’ll find out next week! 5 years after Tako Tuesday a bitter wasteland exists in both the sequel to the first Lego Movie and the creativity in Lego Movie 2. Can the star power of Chris Pratt save this watered down dash for cash? Probably, he’s like, huge! Prepare yourself as we fully come to grips that it’s probably not a good thing for a couple of 30-somethings to see kids movies. The beer for this episode is a special one from our friends at Societe as we drink their version of Resilience IPA: a recipe made by Sierra Nevada where all proceeds go to the Camp Fire Relief Fund to help with the deadliest and most destructive fire in California history. Societe’s take on this was quite delicious, and we highly recommend for the quality as well as the good cause!

Brew Ha Ha this week features Vinny Cilurzo from Russian River Brewing, a guest appearance from Herlinda’s dad Eloy Heras and a phone call from Tara Nurin, Forbes correspondent covering the brewing and distilling businesses. Herlinda’s father is visiting her from Amarillo, Texas. He has stories about serving in the Navy for 23 years. He tells a story about being in the Navy. He had buddies who got drunk while on shore leave and he helped them get back to the ship. But they got him to drink too so he got in some trouble since he was underage. [6:20] Getting back to beer, they taste the Russian River version of Resilience IPA. It is a fundraiser beer that Sierra Nevada put together, similar to the one that RRBC did last year with their Sonoma Pride fire relief campaign, only on a larger scale. Vinny says that Russian River had about a hundred breweries participating last year but there are 1,481 breweries all around the world who are participating in Sierra Nevada’s Resilience campaign. All the proceeds go to relief efforts for people affected by the Camp fire in Butte Co. Herlinda mentions that many other breweries around Sonoma County are making Resilience IPA and participating in the fund raising efforts. A Call from Tara Nurin [13:30] Tara Nurin calls in from New York. (We apologize for the occasional static on the phone line.) Steve asks about her recent article in Forbes, called Feed Your Spirit and Stomach with These Feel-Good Giving Tuesday Beer, Wine & Liquor Purchases. She also wrote an article based on the Resilience project where she told about two Sonoma County brewers, St. Florian and Sonoma Springs Brewing, which makes a beer called Sottile Red Ale. Sottile is the last name of a firefighter who coordinated a beer to commemorate a fire that happened at the brewery. The firefighters put out the fire and saved the brewery, two weeks before they were to open. Mr. Sottile passed away just before the release so they remember him with the beer’s name. Note about the name Sottile The family name Sottile comes from Italy, specifically from Sicily. In Italian it is pronounced "soht-EE-leh" with the accent on the middle syllable. Its meaning can be translated "thin, slim" or "subtle." Some families in America pronounce it "so-TILL-Y" if they don't pronounce it the Italian way. -cd

We went to a local brewery, Kros Strain Brewing Company in Omaha, to record our podcast and to try their take on Sierra Nevada's Resilience IPA. Sierra Nevada is a brewery out of Chico, California whose employees were affected by the wildfires back in November. So in an effort to raise money. they released the recipe for this beer so that other breweries could make it, sell it, and then donate the proceeds towards those affected by wildfires. There are many other breweries across the country that are doing this. Find out if a local brewery near you is doing this and go check it out! https://sierranevada.com/resilience-butte-county-proud-ipa

This week on Beer Sessions Radio Jimmy is joined by Jason Sahler of Strong Rope Brewing, Chad Zimar of Steuben Brewing, Kara Johnston from Chimney Bluffs Hoppery and Chris Holden of Crooked Creek Hops. Currently New York Farm Breweries are required to source 20% of their ingredients from NY State, but in 2019 this will increase to 60%. These guests are ahead of the curve though and have traveled from across New York to talk about their commitment to local ingredients. The first beer they pour is Steuban’s Mount Pleasant, part of the brewery’s local liquid series and made from 100% NY ingredients, including a hop from Seneca Falls called ‘New York.’ Efforts are underway to learn more about NY hops through genetic research. It’s agreed upon that good beer is dependent on high quality ingredients and these brewers are committed to educating their customers about the hops, malts, and farmers contributing to their brews. Community in the beer industry is strong inside New York and across the globe. Ken Grossman, the owner and founder of Sierra Nevada calls in to talk about his most recent project: Resilience IPA. This beer is being brewed and sold across the country and the world to raise money for those affected by the California Wildfires. Listen to the full episode to learn more about how this movement spread so quickly and check out Sierra Nevada’s website to find a brewery selling Resilience near you. California Wildfire Devastation On the morning of November 8th, 2018, a brush fire broke out in Butte County, California. High winds and dry air created a recipe for rapid growth and this small fire quickly escalated to a point where firefighters abandoned attempts to put the fire out in favor of evacuating people. When the fire was finally contained 17 days later there were over 100 people killed, injured or missing with countless others having their lives impacted forever. Property damage is in the billions and entire communities have been destroyed. The Camp Fire was the worst wildfire in the history of California and the worst in the United States in over a century. Needless to say, this region needs some help. Enter Resilience IPA Sierra Nevada Brewing Company has been a staple of Butte County for nearly 40 years so this devastation hit really close to home. Soon after the Camp Fire disaster Sierra Nevada announced the plan to release the Resilience Butte County Proud IPA. On top of Sierra Nevada brewing and releasing this beer the brewery asked other craft breweries across the country to brew the same beer to support the cause. And boy did they. Over 1400 breweries have joined this cause to provide assistance to those in need. 100% of the proceeds of this beer at each brewery will go toward The Camp Fire Relief Fund. The Podcast In this episode, I sit down with Ben VanderMeer from Sierra Nevada along with an awesome group of people from the amazing Arizona beer community. We talk about the Resilience IPA and how the Arizona beer community has stepped up to play their part in giving back to this cause. Shout Outs Extra special thanks to Chris Dodson for his awesome production/editing work to help put the audio side of the episodes together Intro/Outro music is "La Negra Tomasa" by the awesome local Arizona band Fayuca Want to show your support and help this show grow? Bill Debaun (Co-Editor of dcbeer.com) also returns to discuss why so many brewers are compelled to give back to their communities. It's a feel-good kind of day.
Craft Brew News – 12/07/18WE ARE RANKED # 12 IN FOOD CATEGORY ON iTUNES !!!!California ABC Uncovers Brewpub ViolationsA statewide investigation by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) into 70 brewpubs with “Type 75” licenses uncovered violations by nearly 50 of the licensees. As Brewbound reported in late July, the Type 75 retail restaurant license gives brewpubs the ability to produce between 100 and 5,000 barrels annually. However, some business owners sought to obtain the licenses with the primary intent to sell spirits. The investigation found that nearly 50 licensees were either not brewing beer, not meeting the quotas or not functioning as a brewpub.California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a new law in September allowing Type 75 licensees to sell their products for off-premise consumption. The law also tightened requirements for obtaining the license, requiring license holders to operate at least a 7-barrel brewing system and produce and sell at least 200 barrels annually.Previously, Type 75 licensees were required to produce at least 100 barrels per year, with no sales requirements. That led some business owners to seek the licenses, which cost about $14,000, instead of obtaining liquor license, which can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.More than 1,200 Breweries Join Sierra Nevada Wildfire Relief ProjectMore than 1,200 breweries have signed up to brew a special IPA, created by Sierra Nevada in an effort to raise money for wildfire relief. As part of those efforts, beer companies will brew the same beer and donate proceeds to the Camp Fire Relief Fund, which supports those affected by the California wildfire that killed 88 people and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses.Sierra Nevada founder Ken Grossman wrote that his company will donate 100 percent of sales from Resilience Butte County Proud IPA to the fund.“Our hope is to get Resilience IPA in taprooms all over the country to create a solid start for our community’s future,” Grossman wrote.Brewers large and small have agreed to participate.New Belgium Brewing Launches ‘Up Next’ Rotator Series with Brut IPAFORT COLLINS, Colo. — New Belgium Brewing’s brand new Up Next Series taps into the brewery’s tradition of innovation by offering easy-drinking, unique and flavor-bending beers that reflect evolving trends in food and drink. We're back from Thanksgiving, fatter and drunker. This week Steve and Adam have a solid bout of brown talk, talking about the oft overlooked and sometimes forgotten about brown ale. They talk about Sierra Nevada's charity beer, the Resilience IPA, the other breweries participating and how homebrewers can get in on the spirit of giving in the name of the Camp Fire Relief Fund. Then Adam and Steve answer beer questions from Beer Advocate. Finally Steve provides reviews of beer apps. Spoiler, he doesn't like most of them. Adam concurs. Today on That Podcast I Like: We find out more about the community our vacation rental is in and the interesting things that go on here. Shawn went to Thanksgiving dinner loopy on cold medicine and wrote his first musical while watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. In the news: 1. There was a lot of drama surrounding the parade that almost didn't happen. High winds were expected to threaten the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, but it not only happened, there is no doubt this year's parade will go down in history and not only for the weather. 2. On November 27, also known as “Giving Tuesday”, Sierra Nevada and 400 other breweries will brew Resilience IPA with 100 percent of sales will go to the Camp Fire fund. 3. One guy took avoiding his family over the holiday to a new extreme - he was busted for trying to bribe a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent (multiple times) to deport his estranged wife and her child.
