Originally available to Patreon patrons 6th July. We recorded an episode about the 1996's biggest movie, Independence Day.  For election year, we're looking at movies 'about' the American presidency, and how better to do that than to embrace the cheesy American exceptionalist pornography of this alien-invasion effects-spectacular?  It's a sprawling SF comedy about incalculable mass murder and the genocide of humanity. Bill Pullman looks decent, Will Smith quips, Jeff Goldblum recycles, Randy Quaid gets an anal probe, billions die, and a good time is had by all. Don't worry, the dog survives... For now. Spoiler alert: this is deeply stupid, but we both kinda like it anyway. Features UK election chat, and US SCOTUS / Presidential debate banter. Attention all Vikings fans! In today's episode of Vikings Daily Opener, we have some exciting news to share. We're only 58 days away from the Minnesota Vikings week 1 season opener and we have some great updates on the team. Firstly, Dorktown will be producing a seven-part documentary on the history of the Minnesota Vikings! As fans, we know that our team has a unique and fascinating history that is both thrilling and heartbreaking. This documentary promises to be a deep dive into the Vikings' 62-year history, complete with over a dozen Hall of Fame players, numerous scandals, and gut-wrenching heartbreaks. It will be produced by Dorktown in collaboration with Jon Bois and Alex Rubenstein from SB Nation's Secret Base, and will debut on August 1st. You won't want to miss out on this! In addition to the documentary, ESPN has named T.J. Hockenson as the sixth-best tight end in the NFL. Hockenson is a cornerstone player for Minnesota's offense, and his performance last season is a testament to his talent. He had an impressive 62 receptions for 583 yards from Weeks 8 to 18, both of which were top-two finishes among tight ends. ESPN's writeup on Hockenson highlights his importance to the team, and the ranking of sixth feels right for him. However, some experts believe that he could become TE 2 or 3 next season with a great year. Then, we discuss potential trade candidates for the Vikings entering the 2023 training camp. Despite winning the NFC North title last season, the Vikings are not receiving much respect from NFL observers heading into the new season. As a result, trades are possible during training camp to turn weaknesses into strengths. We look at three players who could be traded before the start of the season: edge rusher Danielle Hunter, center Garrett Bradbury, and running back Kene Nwangwu. Each player has their own unique strengths and weaknesses, and it will be interesting to see if the Vikings decide to part ways with any of them. Finally get into a bit of Twins Talk, and talk the number 58 in Vikings history. Don't miss out on all the latest Vikings news and updates! Tune in to today's episode of Vikings Daily Opener and get ready for the upcoming season. What do we say? SKOL VIKINGS! Hosted by Dave Stefano @Luft_Krigare. Join the conversation! Tristen discusses the importance of Seattle's geography as well as the themes of home, humility, and loyalty while Max delves into olde poetry to connect love of life to the identity of the Seattle Mariners, devoid of any major accomplishments. Tristen and Max both say that they never thought a team from obscurity could make them cry. It happens here.

This week, we bring you two stories about little guys trying to do big big things. First, self-proclaimed animal grinch producer Becca Bressler introduces us to perhaps the one creature that has warmed her heart: a cricket. And more specifically, a male cricket. This is a tale about a tiny Romeo insect trying to find a mate, and the ingenious lengths he'll go to have his beckoning heard. And second, producer Annie McEwen journeys through perhaps the zaniest game of football that has ever been played. When a ragtag group of players take on the top team, will it be an underdog tale for the ages or an absolute disaster? Special thanks to Stephen Spann and Joshua Baxter at the Doris and Harry Vice University Library at Cumberland University as well as Alison Reynolds at Georgia Tech Library. Thanks also to Rick Bell, and to Scott Larson who wrote a book all about this game called Cumberland: The True Story of the Highest Scoring Football Game in History. And finally, thanks so much to our tape syncer Ambriehl Crutchfield for her help with this episode.  If you're still interested in learning more about this epic football game, be sure to check out this brilliant and hilarious video by sportswriter Jon Bois.   Support Radiolab by becoming a member of The Lab today.     Radiolab is on YouTube! Catch up with new episodes and hear classics from our archive. How the Twins came to Minnesota after being the Washington Senators, how they won the 1987 World Series, only to fall back to last place by 1990 only to rebuild themselves into a World Series squad in 1991. The team was built with home grown stars like Kirby Puckett, Kent Hrbk, Dan Gladden and Chuck Knobloch as well as key acquisitions like Jack Morris, Kevin Tapani and Chili Davis. We also get sidetracked discussing a man named Dick Such... In the World Series they faced the Atlanta Braves in what's likely the greatest World Series ever played. This week, Austin introduces the gang to Evangelion with the first two episodes, and places the series' in the broader context of mecha anime the preceded it. Why is Evangelion so much more explicitly horrifying than most Gundam shows, despite sharing their anti-war politics? And how about that penguin, huh? Danielle has also been watching SB Nation's video series on the history of MMA, "Fighting in the Age of Loneliness" from Jon Bois and Chapo Trap House's Felix Biederman. An often riveting history of sports and martial arts, the series also attempts to put them in context of the political and cultural currents that flowed around them, to more mixed success. But first, Rob has been fascinated by the story of a tiny little burger joint that was destroyed by a rave review... only to learn just before recording that a far more familiar and ugly story of abuse was lurking under the surface the whole time.
