On today's show we are talking about the non headline revisions to economic data.  I'm here to tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that the US economy is in recession.  What I'm sharing today is the good work that is done by Danielle DiMartino Booth. She is the CEO and chief strategist at QI Research. Previously Danielle was at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas for nine years working under Richard Fisher.  This past FOMC meeting marked a significant departure from previous meetings where Fed chairman Jerome Powell described a change in Fed posture. This was not part of the initial remarks or the press release, but rather a response during the question period.  He said that the Fed was shifting posture from fighting inflation to a return to its dual mandate to both maximize and maintain price stability. That means that the Fed is seeing something in the employment data that is concerning. On this show I've been reporting inconsistencies in the employment data for many months.  Well now we have one more data point that categorically shows what is really happening in the jobs market.  Every month the BLS puts out the payroll establishment survey and they publish the GDP for the nation.  In addition to the payroll survey, the census bureau also conducts their own survey once a quarter. The data from the Census Bureau is much more comprehensive than the BLS survey. We also experience frequent revisions to the payroll survey.  What the census data shows is that in the third quarter of 2023 instead of having 640,000 jobs created during that three month period, the economy actually lost 190,000 jobs in that time period. This is not a small difference. The narrative in the mainstream media is that the economy is strong and the consumer is resilient and the jobs market is strong. If the true data was being reported, I think it would be much more difficult to propagate that story.

A wide-ranging and thought-provoking exploration of the importance of long-term thinking. Humans are unique in our ability to understand time, able to comprehend the past and future like no other species. Yet modern-day technology and capitalism have supercharged our short-termist tendencies and trapped us in the present, at the mercy of reactive politics, quarterly business targets and 24-hour news cycles. It wasn't always so. In medieval times, craftsmen worked on cathedrals that would be unfinished in their lifetime. Indigenous leaders fostered intergenerational reciprocity. And in the early twentieth century, writers dreamed of worlds thousands of years hence. Now, as we face long-term challenges on an unprecedented scale, how do we recapture that far-sighted vision? Richard Fisher takes us from the boardrooms of Japan - home to some of the world's oldest businesses - to an Australian laboratory where an experiment started a century ago is still going strong. He examines the psychological biases that discourage the long view, and talks to the growing number of people from the worlds of philosophy, technology, science and the arts who are exploring smart ways to overcome them. How can we learn to widen our perception of time and honour our obligations to the lives of those not yet born?

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson had an unsettling welcome to the New Year. In an interview published on January 1st by Politico, the former U.S. senator announced that the Chinese Communist Party is preparing to colonize the Moon and may use force to deny us access to it.   This is not exactly news as experts like Richard Fisher have been warning for years that the CCP is intent on dominating  what it calls the “earth-Moon system” as part of Beijing's bid to control our planet.   But U.S. policymakers – and particularly those involved with America's space programs – have for decades encouraged the public to believe leftist nostrums about the High Frontier being a pristine international “commons” reserved for peaceful exploration and scientific research.  We're now in a real – and potentially deadly – space race with the Chinese. It's one we literally can't afford to lose.  This is Frank Gaffney.

A common refrain among the market experts I talk with is that we can't be 'investors' in the current environment -- instead, we're all forced to be speculators, guessing what Fed Chair Jerome Powell and other The Federal Open Market Committee members are going to decide to do next. Because that's all that matters to price action these days. Like it or not, that's the world we're living in right now. So it makes all the sense in the world to tap the perspective of someone who knows the Fed inside & out -- which is why we're fortunate to have Danielle DiMartino Booth, CEO & Chief Strategist for Quill Intelligence joining us today. EA - Should we buy coal mines? by John G. Halstead

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Should we buy coal mines?, published by John G. Halstead on May 4, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. At Effective Altruism Global, Will MacAskill proposed the idea of buying a coal mine in order to keep coal in the ground, as a potential longtermist megaproject. The idea was covered in a piece by Richard Fisher for the BBC here. There is a large literature in economics on the idea of reducing the supply of fossil fuels in the economics literature, and the idea recently received additional attention thanks to a post by Alex Tabarrok on the Marginal Revolution blog here. I have spent around 50 hours looking into whether it would be worth buying a coal mine. I talked to more than 10 experts about this. I have mainly focused on feasibility in the US and Australia because the project seemed more promising in those countries due to likely political and legal barriers in countries like India, China and Indonesia. I have concluded that: Buying a coal mine is much more expensive than it might at first appear due to costs to reclaim the land after mine closure and foregone royalty payments to the mine owner. Buying mines is legally impossible for some mines, and for others seems extremely practically difficult, for legal, political and cultural reasons. My impression is that there are few viable opportunities to buy coal mines in the world. The full costs of buying a mine would be in the hundreds of millions of dollars for a mine a similar size to a top 30 US coal mine. So, the barriers to buying just one mine are very high. For context, total global spending on climate philanthropy is $5-9 billion. So you could spend close to a tenth of global climate philanthropy buying just one coal mine. It is unclear whether buying a mine and retiring it would make much difference compared to the counterfactual, in the US at least, because coal demand there seems to be in structural decline. The counterfactual benefits seem larger in Australia because the coal industry is more buoyant, but, for that very reason, buying up coal mines would be much more politically difficult there. It seems likely that there are other better ways to limit coal production or consumption, such as political advocacy, or paying some lawyers to gum up the works. I think EA donors could have more impact through other projects. Buying up a coal mine might be a good option for donors who would otherwise have lower impact and have the time to identify some workable opportunities. This is a very quick write-up of my reasoning that I thought I would share in case anyone else had thought about looking into this area. I am optimising for speed and writing up my findings quickly, rather than referencing to back up my claims, doing lots of checking of my numbers, and asking for review before publishing. I am >75% sure that my central claims are correct. Thanks to Max Daniel, Abie Rohrig and Will MacAskill for comments and discussion. 1. Costs are much higher than they seem In his recent post on the promise of buying a coal mine, Alex Tabarrok noted that there is a coal mine for sale for $7.8m dollars. If you assume that this is the total cost of buying the mine and shutting it down, then doing so would be highly cost-effective. However, the true cost would be much higher than this. Reclamation costs Owners of coal mining leases have to pay ‘reclamation costs', which is the environmental cleanup of the mine: turning it into forest, a solar farm etc. In the US, the typical cost of reclamation is ~$10,000 per acre (report). For mines with data in the US, the size ranges from 1,000 acres to 40,000 acres. North Antelope Rochelle, the world's largest coal mine, is ~5,000 acres. So, the reclamation costs would range from $10m to $400m and would be $50m for North Antelope (calculations are here). For the McDowell mine listed ...

What is it like participating in one of the COVID-19 vaccine trials running right now? Many people want to know as the world rushes to educate themselves in what the expedited vaccine development process looks like. Richard Fisher wrote a piece for BBC about his participation in Oxford University's trial. The trial has ten thousand participants and is putting Oxford's vaccine against a common meningitis vaccine as the control. Why not use a placebo? Well, researchers wanted to ensure both groups receive common vaccination side effects. Richard will fill out a weekly questionnaire, take tonsil and nasal swabs, and report for periodic blood tests for the next year. He writes: “It's this necessary but long-term process that some people – many of them politicians – fail to understand about the coronavirus vaccine trials. You can't throw money at the problem and hope results happen faster. While the Oxford vaccine trial has already shown promising safety results, and the tantalising possibility of a protective immune response, it was only in 1,000 people. To roll out a vaccine to millions (or the whole world), you need a level of confidence that can only come with patience and more data.Public health officials will remember well the times that vaccine rollouts went wrong. In 1976, fears of a swine flu outbreak led the US government to accelerate vaccine development and inoculate tens of millions of Americans. The feared pandemic never arrived, but by some estimates, around 30 people died due to adverse vaccine reactions. Such mistakes may well have dented trust in public health advice and fuelled anti-vax fears too, which is the last thing you need in a pandemic.”Please be sure to like, subscribe, provide a five-star rating, and write a review. It's free to you and means the world to me. Thank you for listening, and I'll catch you tomorrow.

Did this mess start with Nixon when he eliminated gold as money in 1971? Can the system be turned around? If so, what is Danielle's remedy? If not, what lies ahead for Americans and how can they protect themselves? With gold rising from $35/oz in 1971 to over $1,900 in 2011, markets are demanding a return to gold as money. It’s simple really. Inside the hallowed halls of the Federal Reserve, unelected, largely unaccountable bureaucrats decide whether the economy is running too hot or too cold, then tinker with monetary policy accordingly. It’s a tremendous amount of power. A generous reading of history suggests the Fed has a dubious track record of forecasting where the U.S. economy is headed. In fact, many are searching for a better way – an alternative to a broken system. None is in more earnest pursuit than Danielle DiMartino Booth, whose brand new book “Fed Up” explains why the current Federal Reserve system is due for a serious revamp. Few are as critical or as qualified to suggest fixes. DiMartino Booth joined Richard Fisher’s Dallas Federal Reserve shortly after the cracks in the financial system were beginning to show. The Fed spent much of 2007 vehemently denying these cracks even existed. Recall in July 2005, that when asked about an impending housing bubble bursting, one that might trigger recession, then Fed chair Ben Bernanke famously said, “I guess I don't buy your premise. It's a pretty unlikely possibility.” During her decade or so at the Dallas Fed, DiMartino Booth recalls feeling initially “daunted” by all these “brilliant people” who could “do calculus in their sleep.” She quickly became disillusioned by how insular the organization was. Sure, the halls were packed with Ph.D’s but many of these academics really didn’t understand the ins and outs of markets. “Generally, if you say stock market to a Ph.D. economist it’s like saying ‘Boo!’ on Halloween. They get all freaked out,” DiMartino Booth says. As the housing market was rolling over and Bear Stearns blew up, “it felt like a hospital,” she says. “Nobody was really worried.” Unsurprisingly, the Fed’s cloistered monasticism has come under tremendous scrutiny and criticism. Many things need to change. “I think the first step should be an acknowledgement of their own fallibility,” she says. “They really are espousing one view of economic thought that would make even Keynes rotate in his grave.” What else? DiMartino Booth suggests a number practical reforms. “We’re no longer the same nation that we were in 1913 when the Federal Reserve act was initially conceived,” she says. In other words, let’s bring the Fed into the realities of the 21st Century. • Reduce the Fed’s mandate to just minimizing inflation. • Take the labor mandate out of the equation and put it back in the hands of the private sector. • Reduce regional Fed offices to ten districts (from twelve currently) by adding a regional Federal Reserve office (or two) on the West Coast and absorbing Minneapolis, St. Louis and Cleveland into Chicago. • Give every district a permanent vote to minimize the power of votes in New York and Washington D.C. • The Fed should hire a more diverse staff with more financial market familiarity and experience • The Fed needs a better appreciation of monetary policy rules, like the Taylor Rule, which would help serve as a system of checks and balances There’s hope. By June of 2018, vocal Fed critic President Donald Trump will be able to nominate as many as five Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) members, DiMartino Booth notes. Meanwhile, accomplished former Goldman Sachs execs like Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and director of the National Economic Council Gary Cohn have Trump’s ear on fixing the Fed. “They are clearly the two most powerful people when it comes to the economy and finance,” DiMartino Booth says. The crusade to fix the Fed continues. Change is coming.

Hey, stock market investors!  When members of the Federal Reserve are graphically expressing worry about the market, you’ve got to take it seriously.  And this news, my friends, is serious if you’re a stock investor.  I’ll tell you all about it right now.  I’m Bryan Ellis.  This is Episode #202.----Hello SDI Nation!  Welcome to the podcast of record for savvy self-directed investors like you!  Today’s show has one purpose:  To help YOU make great investments that are simple, safe and strong!Let’s get started with today’s installment of Wisdom of the Ancients, where I share with you a saying, quote or Proverb that has stood the test of time and conveys truth to which you and I as self-directed investors must pay close attention.  Today’s proverb says this:  “Those who give to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses.”What does this mean to you?  To me, it means that it’s wise to live in an “others-focused” kind of way.  In other words… think of the needs of others… specifically those who are destitute.  Do you believe that the wealth you’ve accumulated was given to you solely for your benefit… or maybe, just maybe… is the reason you have that wealth to give you the chance to wisely steward resources that can be used to feed the hungry, cloth the naked and heal the sick… along with, of course, taking care of yourself and your loved ones? That’s what that proverb means to me.  What are your thoughts?  I’d love to hear them.  This is episode #202, so you can stop by SDIRadio.com/202 – the number 2 – 0 – 2 – and share your thoughts in the comments section. Now, on to some financial markets analysis. The stock market is doing pretty well these days, isn’t it?  It started the year by continuing a big plunge that began late last year, but sometime in February, the direction turned and now the market is actually up for the year despite the earlier fall. And for those of you who are in stocks, that makes me so happy!  I hope for the very best for you at all times. But there’s cause for alarm if you’re a rational thinker.  You see, in Episode #200, which you can, of course, hear by visiting SDIRadio.com/200, I told you that the rules of capitalism are no longer the governing rules for the actions of this market.  In a healthy economy, it’s the economy itself that determines success or failure of stocks. That’s not how things are working right now.You see, for the past 20 years or so, the one factor that has had an outsized influence on stock prices is the Federal Reserve, a group of bureaucrats who are tasked with establishing monetary policy for the United States.  There would be precious little need for specific monetary policy if our money actually had intrinsic value.  Alas, our money is based on nothing more than confidence in our government and where the value of your money is concerned, the part of the government that decides, rather directly, what your money is worth, is the Federal Reserve. This is important – critically important, actually – for you stock market investors.  Here’s why:  The Fed has, for the past 2-3 decades, taken as a central part of it’s mission to maintain the apparent health of the economy as measured by the U.S. stock market.Over and over again, the Fed has intervened with the specific intent of “propping up” the economy generally and stocks specifically.  Remember the bailouts that happened as part of the great Recession a few years ago?  That money came from the Fed.So for many years now, the Fed has been desperately using every trick in the book, like bailouts and interest rate manipulation, to keep the stock market high.  And do you know what?  Generally speaking, they’ve been very successful. But my friends… you can’t catch fish in a dry pond.  And the Fed is out of tricks.Note that it’s not me saying it… and it’s not just one person saying this.  But the MOST NOTABLE person sounding the alarm is none other than Richard Fisher, former president and CEO of the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank, one of the big branches of the Fed.  Fisher ran the Dallas fed for 10 years, and is currently a senior analyst at Barclay’s.  He’s a guy that’s able to speak with authority about the Fed’s role and growing impotence as a force for “good” in the market.Fisher was on CNBC just this morning and made a very interesting comment, and the link to that interview is on today’s show page at SDIRadio.com/202.  Fisher said, essentially, that there’s nothing left the Fed can do at this point… they’ve used all of the arrows in the quiver.  He says that the Fed is “living in constant fear of market reaction and that is not the way to manage policy.”That’s sobering.  If the Fed exists as a reactive force to the market, and if the Fed has already used up all of the tools at it’s disposal, then that’s pretty bad.But if you take it a step further and believe, as I do, that the market run-up in stocks in the past 10-20 years in stocks is not just because the economy has been growing, but also largely because of manipulation of the capital markets by the federal reserve, then the fact that the Fed is in a reactionary mode and is wholly out of ammo is even more terrifying.Look, I’m not predicting an immediate stock market crash.  But I ABSOLUTELY believe that the foundation of the stock market is like shifting sand… it’s a house of cards.  If you get out soon, you’ll be one of the people to have successfully “gamed” the biggest Ponzi scheme in the history of the world.Who knows… maybe I’m wrong.  Maybe the part of the market that actually does reflect the performance of the underlying companies, and the condition of the broader economy… maybe that part of the market is what is being reflected in today’s stock valuations.  But part of me – the skeptical, “protect the money” part of me – thinks otherwise. What about you?Share your thoughts with me at SDIRadio.com/202!That’s all for today.  A lot of you have been emailing me privately, asking our private equity funds.  So in the next episode, I’ll tell you a bit more about that… and that will be well timed, as we’re now at the end of Q12016, with some results to report.  Let’s just say that I’m pretty proud of what’s happened.  HeheheSo be sure to get notified about the next episode of SDI Radio by being on our private discussion list which you can Well the Dow Jones got clobbered again today, down 252 points at the close The NASDAQ down about 55 The transports continue to get clobbered down another 146 points, decisively in bear market territory CNBC blamed the entire decline on jitters over North Korea's hydrogen bomb test I admit that this prospect is not good, but I don't believe that announcement was the reason for the decline The real problem is the Fed removing the monetary herion from the addicts on Wall Street and this is the withdrawal Former President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, spoke on CNBC yesterday and he admitted that the Fed "engineered a stock market rally" They wanted all this phony wealth to cause us to make irrational decisions That's what happened during the dot com bubble and to a greater extent during the housing bubble Here you have it from the words of a former Fed president, a voting member who voted for QE 1 & 2 who is saying that the Fed did this to create a "wealth effect" He even said, don't be surprised if the market goes down 20% - it's still overvalued - he admits the Fed was propping it up Obviously if the Fed removes the props the market will go down After Simon Hobbs asked Fisher if he is going to apologize, he said," Don't blame me, I voted against QE3!" He is throwing his colleagues, including Janet Yellen, under the bus Now that he is no longer at the Fed, he refers to it as a "giant weapon that is out of ammunition" The Fed still has ammo: cut rates (in this case, even to negative) and QE4, their big bazooka There's plenty of ammo left and it will be fired a lot sooner than people think Korea is an excuse, but Richard Fisher is letting the cat out of the bag, but no one in the media is picking up on this Also in the markets today, while stocks were going down, gold was going up - gold hit a 2-month high today As fast as it is going up in dollars, it is going up even faster in other currencies, like the Canadian dollar, which hit a 9-year low, the Australian dollar The yen was up - the dollar/yen is breaking down - to me that is a very scary proposition for the markets to see this strength in the Japanese yen Oil prices continued to drop, down another $2 today - we're trading below $34 Gold stocks were up - you'd think they would be up a lot more because mining costs are plunging and revenue is going up, but Wall Street is oblivious to the bargains that exist in the mining stocks We got a lot of economic news today and most of it was, as is typically the case, bad Yesterday vehicle sales were at a 6-month low Last year was a record for auto sales, but December was a 6-month low despite all the Christmas giveaways Meanwhile the inventory to sales ratio continues to rise - a new high since the 2008-2009 great recession Also GM got clobbered today, down about 4% - already down 9% for the year and down more than 20% from its 52-wk high - that is a bear market This is telling me that the auto bubble has popped There are going to be a lot of layoffs in the auto sector - good, high-paying jobs I have said that starting in January 2016 we would start to see layoffs because the numbers have been horrible Sure enough, Macy's today announced a restructuring, laying off thousands of workers because of disappointing sales throughout the year We will see a huge blow-up in the securitized market for auto loans They layoffs are coming - the low unemployment number is the rear view mirror Looking at the actual economy in the windshield is a disaster for jobs This is deja vu - in 2008 the subprime market had already exploded - the housing market problems should have been obvious Yet everybody said, "don't worry, it's contained." and I said why can't anybody see that everything I have been warning about for years is happening People were still denying what I was saying even as the financial crisis had already begun

Robots. What are they? Just a new sort of tool, qualitatively different kinds of tools that do things we neither expect nor intend, new kinds of beings? With the incipient explosion of complex robots, we may need to re-examine the way law uses and understands intention, responsibility, causation, and other basic concepts. We’re joined by Ryan Calo, who has achieved the outrageously awesome feat of earning a living thinking about robots. (It’s pronounced Kay-low. So Joe got this one right.) We discuss flying drones, chess computers, driverless cars, antilock brakes, and computer-conceived barbecue sauce. Richard Fisher, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about the problems with "too big to fail"--the policy idea that certain financial institutions are too large to face the bankruptcy or failure and need to be rescued or bailed-out. Fisher argues that "too big to fail" remains a serious problem despite claims that recent financial regulation has eliminated it. Fisher discusses various ways to deal with too-big-to-fail, including his own preferred policy. The last part of the conversation deals with quantitative easing and monetary policy during the crisis.

To prevent the collapse of the global financial system in 2008, The Treasury committed 245 billion in taxpayer dollars to stabilize America’s banking institutions. Today, banks that were once “too big to fail” have only grown bigger. Were size and complexity at the root of the financial crisis, or do calls to break up the big banks ignore real benefits that only economies of scale can pass on to customers and investors? Richard Fisher's lecture was given on March 30, 2010. Richard W. Fisher assumed the office of president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas on April 4, 2005. In this role, Fisher serves as a member of the Federal Open Market Committee, the Federal Reserve’s principal monetary policymaking group. Fisher is former vice chairman of Kissinger McLarty Associates, a strategic advisory firm chaired by former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Fisher began his career in 1975 at the private bank of Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., where he specialized in fixed income and foreign exchange markets. He became assistant to the secretary of the Treasury during the Carter administration, working on issues related to the dollar crisis of 1978–79. He then returned to Brown Brothers to found its Texas operations in Dallas. In 1987, Fisher created Fisher Capital Management and a separate funds-management firm, Fisher Ewing Partners. Fisher Ewing’s sole fund, Value Partners, earned a compound rate of return of 24 percent per annum during his period as managing partner. He sold his controlling interests in both firms when he rejoined the government in 1997. From 1997 to 2001, Fisher was deputy U.S. trade representative with the rank of ambassador. He oversaw the implementation of NAFTA and various agreements with Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Chile, and Singapore. He was a senior member of the team that negotiated the bilateral accords for China's and Taiwan's accession to the World Trade Organization. Throughout his career, Fisher has served on numerous for-profit and not-for-profit boards. He has also maintained his academic interests, teaching graduate courses and serving on several university boards. He was a Weatherhead Fellow at Harvard in 2001, is an honorary fellow of Hertford College at Oxford University, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. A first-generation American, Fisher is equally fluent in Spanish and English, having spent his formative years in Mexico. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy (1967–69), graduated with honors from Harvard University in economics (1971), read Latin American politics at Oxford (1972–73), and received an MBA from Stanford University (1975). In October of 2006, Fisher received the Service to Democracy Award and Dwight D. Eisenhower Medal for Public Service from the American Assembly. In April 2009, he was inducted into the Dallas Business Hall of Fame.
