George Szell took over the Cleveland Orchestra in 1946, and, once he had created the instrument he needed, he started an extensive series of recordings for CBS (American Columbia, now Sony Classical). The focus was on the great works of the Austro-German repertoire and, needless to say, the nine Beethoven symphonies and a selection of overtures were among them (recorded between 1957 and 1967). Sony Classical have just gathered together the symphonies and overtures from the large 'George Szell Complete Columbia Collection' set from 2018, and are releasing them on seven CDs on December 13 and also digitally (already available). James Jolly went to talk to Gramophone's long-serving contributor Rob Cowan about the recordings, and also about George Szell as a conductor in general.

Hey everyone, the sequel to the 2018 $1B-dollar grossing Aquaman has now released and apparently, it is the final film of the DCEU and the current era of DC films... before James Gunn's DCU kicks off with Max's Creature Commandos in 2024. The first film in the DCU will be Gunn's Superman: Legacy. Getting back to Aquaman, I highly enjoyed the first movie and have really dug the trailers for this sequel but the rumors of extensive plot reworking and poor test screenings over the past two years have had me concerned. So, does James Wan deliver yet another over the top, bombastic blockbuster or does the DCEU end on a ginormous fizzle? Find out in this NON-SPOILER review. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom: Directed by: James Wan Screenplay by: David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick Story by: James Wan & David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Jason Momoa & Thomas Pa'a Sibbett Aquaman created by: Mort Weisinger and Paul Norris Produced by: Rob Cowan, Peter Safran, James Wan Executive Producers: Michael Clear, Walter Hamada, Galen Vaisman Music by: Rupert Gregson-Williams Cinematography by: Don Burgess Editing by: Kirk M. To defeat him, Aquaman must turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance in order to save the world from irreversible destruction.
