Smith and Stew from It Doesn't Hold Up podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Smith's choice The Net. The Net (1995) is an action thriller staring Sandra Bullock as a systems analyst from producer turned director Irwin Winkler. Angela Bennett (Bullock) a single, permanently online systems analyst gets involved in a conspiracy when she unknowingly receives a floppy disk with confidential information. On vacation she meets Jack (Jeremy Northam) who under the guise of a holiday romance tries to kill Angela. She manages to escape but quickly discovers her identity has been erased online. The Net is a film that shows us the thrills of ordering pizza online and the indestructible floppy disk. Time has not been kind to films about ‘the internet' from the 1990s and The Net is no exception. There is no reason for this film to be two hours but it is! This is reflected in the scoring and The Net scores 2.49 overall. We start on a director's chair. We pull back to reveal its back. On it is emblazoned a name. That name? George MacKay, the wonderful star of this week's thought-provoking original movie musical, Joshua Oppenheimer's The End, who pops into the podbooth to have a good old natter [from 30:49 - 48:20 approx] with... We pull back. It's another director's chair. On it, another name: Chris Hewitt. Everyone shrugs their shoulders. But wait! There's another chair, and another name! That name is Irwin Winkler, the legendary producer of Rocky, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Irishman, Creed, and now The Alto Knights, as he talks to Chris about going double De Niro on that movie. [1:00:37 - 1:17:11 approx] And then there are three more chairs, with three more names, as Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and John Nugent join Chris in the podbooth for a topsy-turvy episode that flips the format of the show upside down. Our intrepid quartet answer a listener question about Double De Niro, review A Working Man, The Woman In The Yard, and Novocaine, and discuss the week's movie news, including the glacially-paced reveal of the cast of Avengers Doomsday, which was unfolding as we recorded this very show. But they don't necessarily do all of those things in that order. If you're not an MCU stan (or Stan), that discussion comes right at the end of the episode, so here's a rough time stamp should you wish to skip. [1:32:24 approx] For MCU fans, though, dive in. Enjoy.

This is the first of at least 2 episodes about Martin Scorcese's 1990 masterpiece 'Goodfellas'.  Let's be honest: it'll probably take three episodes to cover all the genius onscreen in this epitome of the perfect film. In this episode, I explore the film's roots in Nick Pileggi's classic non-fiction book 'Wiseguy', and the early involvement of vital creative participants in the film like producer Irwin Winkler, actors Robert DeNiro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Paul Sorvino, and Lorraine Bracco, and production team members like Micheal Ballhaus and Thelma Schoonmaker. In Episode 2, we'll get into the film itself, covering the iconic scenes, the score, the film's reception and legacy, and more.

It's one of the most iconic scenes in one of the greatest movies in American history, and it has almost nothing to do with the rest of the plot. It's mob capo Paulie Cicero, played by the late Paul Sorvino. He's in a minimum-security prison with the rest of the wise guys. They've bribed the guards so they can have all the stuff they need for a proper Italian dinner, which they are about to cook themselves: Vinnie's making the tomato sauce, his meatballs a mixture of veal, beef, pork, and too many onions; Johnny Dio's cooking T-bones in a pan over a portable electric burner; then Henry Hill, played by Ray Liotta, shows up with fresh Italian loaves, prosciutto, salami, and a bottle of J&B Scotch. Goodfellas (stylized GoodFellas) is a 1990 American biographical crime drama film directed by Martin Scorsese, written by Nicholas Pileggi and Scorsese, and produced by Irwin Winkler. It is a film adaptation of the 1985 nonfiction book Wiseguy by Pileggi. Starring Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco and Paul Sorvino, the film narrates the rise and fall of mob associate Henry Hill and his friends and family from 1955 to 1980. Scorsese initially titled the film Wise Guy and postponed making it; he and Pileggi later changed the title to Goodfellas. To prepare for their roles in the film, De Niro, Pesci and Liotta often spoke with Pileggi, who shared research material left over from writing the book. According to Pesci, improvisation and ad-libbing came out of rehearsals wherein Scorsese gave the actors freedom to do whatever they wanted. The director made transcripts of these sessions, took the lines he liked most and put them into a revised script, which the cast worked from during principal photography. Goodfellas premiered at the 47th Venice International Film Festival on September 9, 1990, where Scorsese was awarded with Silver Lion for Best Director, and was released in the United States on September 19, 1990, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film was made on a budget of $25 million and grossed $47 million. Goodfellas received widespread acclaim upon release: the critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes calls it "arguably the high point of Martin Scorsese's career". The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, with Pesci winning for Best Supporting Actor. The film won five awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, including Best Film and Best Director. Additionally, Goodfellas was named the year's best film by various critics' groups. Goodfellas is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, particularly in the gangster genre. In 2000, it was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress.[5][6] Its content and style have been emulated in numerous other pieces of media.[7

linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This April is “Cyber Techno Future Shock” month at Catching Up On Cinema! All month long we'll be reviewing some of the goofiest “techno-thrillers” from the 90's. This week, Trevor and Kyle review Irwin Winkler's, The Net (1995)! A paranoia/conspiracy thriller based around contemporary hacking and computer tech being used to infiltrate and disrupt systems many of us take for granted, The Net (1995) is a dreadfully dull film with a solid concept and piss poor execution. Sluggishly paced, dull to look at, and painfully dry in its presentation and exploration of tech and computer systems, the film is likely only remembered for the novelty factor of being an early vehicle for Sandra Bullock, a sequence wherein a character orders a pizza via the 'net (in 1995!), and as the butt -end of a clever joke from Seinfeld. This week, we are a little bit late to the party on this film, but we had to do an episode on Leprechaun 3 last week in honor of St. Patrick's Day.  That aside, we are talking about the newest entry into the long running Rocky Cinematic Universe, CREED III.  The third outing of Michael B. Jordan's Adonis Creed as he fights for his legacy against the physical embodiment of his past in Johnathan Major's, "Diamond" Damian Anderson.  This film marks Michael B. Jordan's directorial debut and based on the strength of this movie, we can't wait to see more.  However, this film marks the first time that Sylvester Stallone's, Rocky, remains absent from the outing against the back drop of Hollywood infighting between Rocky Producer, Irwin Winkler and himself over the direction and rights to the franchise.  But does this film even need Rocky?  Tune in to find out.   Articles Referenced:   Sylvester Stallone Vs. To the surprise of no one that is black, there is always "2 sets of rules" for us in most things we do..in this case actor Djimon Hounson feeling cheated in Hollywood, and actress Angela Bassett being snubbed for the millionth time for an Oscar. An irresponsible man who sired SEVEN, yes, SEVEN kids complains about why his baby mamas want to put child support on him despite voicing his not wanting kids. It's extremely hard for me to nail down my favorite of anything. Bands, songs, foods, tv shows, movies...it's always changing. But, after my most recent re-watch, if you ask me right now, in this moment in time, as I'm typing this, my favorite movie of all time is Rocky. That's worthy of me leaving a love letter to it. We went through the big moments, some that may get overlooked, tidbits, jabs, and crosses, not to mention Stallone's recent social media beatdown of Irwin Winkler, producer of the Rocky franchise and, unfortunately, owner of the character, which leaves Stallone earning less than 1% of the profits from the franchise, and technically no creative control over future films, which has been a point of contention lately. The Academy Awards showed this movie love then, and I'm showing it love now. I'm not much for re-watching things as the listeners know, but Rocky? That's a full Sunday marathon. As far as the AMPM VIDEO crew can remember, we always wanted to talk about GoodFellas a 1990 American biographical crime film directed by Martin Scorsese, written by Nicholas Pileggi and Scorsese, and produced by Irwin Winkler. Starting in the mailroom at the William Morris Agency in 1955, Murray rose to become a television agent, and eventually the behind-the-scenes partner with Merv Griffin to create many of the most successful game shows in TV history, several of which are still on the air today, including Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Murray launched and produced numerous successful shows and pioneered several television business strategies, including the whole concept of television syndication. Murray's father managed the famous Red Mill burlesque nightclub in the Bronx, New York. It was there, as a kid in the 1950s, that he became enamored with entertainment. He met Moe Gold, the quintessential talent agent; cigar, flashy suits, loud ties always with a wad of cash. The film, distributed by United Artists, stars Robert De Niro as Jake LaMotta, an Italian-American middleweight boxer whose self-destructive and obsessive rage, sexual jealousy, and animalistic appetite destroyed his relationship with his wife and family. Also featured in the film are Joe Pesci as Joey, LaMotta's well-intentioned brother and manager who tries to help Jake battle his inner demons, and Cathy Moriarty as his wife. Nicholas Colasanto, Theresa Saldana, and Frank Vincent all play supporting roles in the film.   Watch recent & upcoming ILTYS2 movies here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1mvRuuLuwjP26n_138AYxnsW0Zj-iGkqc?usp=sharing

We look at not just the movie itself, but also it's impact on pop culture - and just how much we actually remember based on how much Rocky has seeped into the public consciousness. Plus we also look at how this first installment fits into the long-running series that will continue over the next 40 years. And as we discuss Stallone-adjacent characters, we also mention... comedy or baseball, cable the way it used to be, arm wrestling is the thing, reading comprehension, Ghostbusters 2, organized crime, garblyness, it's very different going back and rewatching it now... having not seen it in years, how do you fight you, creating a rig for the scene, the sub-genre of boxing movies, Survivor, escaping Cleveland, music video culture, Cobra, drinking raw eggs, on VHS taped from TV, I want to be better, Thunderlips, being weird and awkward, Over the Top, three pages of dialogue in ten seconds of body language, spattered with training, running with your girlfriend up the stairs, at every turn... he makes a different choice, Copland, going heel, it's essentially an origin story... but you didn't know that if you didn't know there's be sequels, novelizations, outsourcing the property, Apollo Creed, being literal, Irwin Winkler, forceps, Ruskies, office sign dialogue, Batman Begins, this is like a thing everyone will do forever now, losing the right way, getting your hands bloody, that's a real person and all art is drug-fueled from the beginning of time. Spoiler Alert: Spoilers for Rocky... and the entire franchise. You have been warned.  "I'm a huge fan... it's the only thing I geek out about... it's like my Star Wars." My guest for this month is West Anthony, and he’s joined me to discuss the film he chose for me, the 1976 comedy-drama film The Front. You can follow the show on Twitter @cinemagadfly. Show notes: Not sure what happened to the audio in the introduction, apologies! The Hollywood blacklist is a term for the treatment of people in the entertainment industry who refused to name names to the House Un-American Activities Committee from 1947 to 1960 For a more in depth take on the blacklist, check out the latest season of the phenomenal You Must Remember This podcast WonderCon is a comic book convention that was held annually in SF until it was cruelly moved to the LA area in 2012. Yes I’m still bitter about it. West also recommends the Gabrielle de Cuir directed Thirty Years of Treason by Eric Bentley Among the people famously blacklisted were Lillian Hellman, Lionel Stander, Paul Robeson, and Zero Mostel This film was directed by blacklisted director Martin Ritt, who also directed the film from our third episode, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold I’m just not a fan of Woody Allen. He’s too painfully neurotic for me, even before I start thinking about whatever the hell happened with his daughter and step-daughter Another Woody film where he only acts is the Paul Mazursky film Scenes from a Mall I’ve been a huge fan of Fiddler on the Roof, and Zero Mostel in it, since I was a little kid Elia Kazan is one of the more interesting stories of directors and the blacklist The writer of this film, Walter Bernstein, was also blacklisted As were many of its stars, including Herschel Bernardi and Lloyd Gough So was the father of actress Julie Garfield, actor John Garfield, which may have contributed to his death from heart problems West’s reference to bodily fluids is, of course, from the excellent Dr. Strangelove Hallie Flanagan ran the Federal Theatre Project, as part of FDR’s WPA program She gave Orson Welles the money to make his Voodoo Macbeth She also gave Marc Blitzstein the money to make The Cradle Will Rock Which was remade in 1999 by Tim Robbins LBJ said in 1966 “I do not believe that this generation of Americans is willing to resign itself to going to bed each night by the light of a Communist moon” Red Channels named 151 entertainers it claimed were communists Trumbo is a 2015 film about Hollywood Ten member Dalton Trumbo Another film about the blacklist is 1991s Guilty by Suspicion, directed by Irwin Winkler and starring Robert De Niro One of the co-writers of Guilty by Suspicion was Abraham Polonsky, who also wrote and directed Force of Evil with John Garfield, but he was so offended by what Irwin Winkler did that he had his name removed from it Guilty by Suspicion also stars Annette Bening Good Night and Good Luck by George Clooney is about McCarthyism, not the blacklist, but it’s also a great film about government overreach Panic in the Streets is a 1950 film, directed by Elia Kazan, and starring Zero Mostel Both West and I think that On the Waterfront, written by Budd Schulberg, was a justification for Kazan’s willingness to name names Lee J. Cobb was also forced to testify in front of the committee Leonard Bernstein wrote the score for On the Waterfront, and the film featured incredible performances from Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, and Eva Marie Saint I still haven’t seen Hail, Caesar! yet, which is a damn shame Nothing better than comparing the work of the Coen brothers to that of fellow Criterion Collection auteur Michael Bay Paranoid American films from the 70s include Three Days of the Condor, Klute, The Parallax View, and All the President’s Men Everyone who reads this needs to go subscribe to Musical Notation with West Anthony.
