Song: Heaven Above, Earth Below Music by: Becky Graber Notes: Becky Graber let her unconscious speak during our conversation, and when I asked what she knows about herself right now, she said, "I am a breath of air on the earth" -- and then laughed a little in surprise and delight. The song she teaches also came from delighted awareness of the place of the body between heaven and earth -- plus a little tai-chi. Becky and I share a wonderfully rambly conversation about shedding old identities and making space, wanting to allow things to bloom rather than push them, and threshold times. We also take a lot of time with this three verse song, including playing with harmonies. You'll hear me making mistakes as I learn and play with harmonies -- but hopefully you won't notice it too much, because you'll be singing right along, too! The goal of this podcast is to encourage you to keep stepping into the power and beauty of your own voice, something Becky Graber has many years of experience at helping people do... Songwriter Info: Becky Graber has lived her life professionally centered around music and storytelling, teaching and performing, and a heart-drive towards healing and coming to centered generosity. She is the founder and director of the Brattleboro (VT) Women's Chorus. Sharing Info: The song is free to share in oral tradition groups, but please contact Becky for recording and/or performing permission. The Military Wives Choirs is a registered charity and network of 75 choirs in British military bases across the UK and overseas, bringing women in the military community closer together through singing. With over 2,200 members, the MWC network is tri-service and any woman with a military connection can join including those currently serving, veterans, mothers, sisters and daughters, empowering women from across the military community. The organisation is also a subsidiary charity of SSAFA.The first choir held their first rehearsal in April 2010 in Catterick Garrison. It was the idea of two Scots Guards wives who decided, whilst their husbands were deployed in Afghanistan in 2009, to put up posters at the Garrison to actively encourage and look for women interested in singing together, to help support and give the wives a focus whilst their husbands deployed. They engaged a well-known local music teacher and set about putting together a choir made up of wives, girlfriends and servicewomen and so the first choir was formed. A letter was written to choirmaster Gareth Malone looking for help and support with the choir; at that time he was receiving acclaim for his BBC television programme The Choir and felt that this was an idea that could be replicated. In the wake of the global shutdown of live music, Sean Rafferty hears from various artists about how they’re continuing to share their music, and how they’re encouraging people to participate. He’s joined by the violinists Rachel Podger and Tasmin Little, as well as Elena Urioste with pianist Tom Poster. The vocal leader and writer James Sills, and choral conductor and broadcaster Gareth Malone also talk to Sean.
It was a call from Dame Esther Rantzen for choirmaster Gareth Malone to bring the nation together under his metaphorical baton that has inspired Gareth’s latest choral idea – The Great British Home Chorus. He talks to Katie about the challenge of creating a virtual choir from amateurs and professionals at a time when we are all being told to keep our distance from each other. The contralto voice used to have a regular presence on opera, recital, and choral stages across this country but in recent decades there seems to be have been a concerted effort to excise this particular voice category with singers, directors, agents, and teachers all turning away from the deep tones this voice can provide in favour of higher and brighter voices. Music critic and writer Jessica Duchen, and founder-director of the Kinder Choirs of the High Peak and a former professional contralto Joyce Ellis, discuss why contraltos have been frozen out and whether it’s time they came in from the cold. The Creative Industries Federation are calling for a Temporary Income Protection Fund for the many hundreds of thousands of freelancers in the creative sector who have seen their contracted work vanish overnight in the wake of the Coronavirus crisis. CEO Caroline Norbury discusses why her organisation wants the government to act now. To celebrate the first day of Spring, Radio 4 has commissioned poets to write new poems marking the arrival of the new season which listeners will be able to hear throughout the day. On Front Row, award-winning poet, playwright, and performer Louise Wallwein will be premiering her new poem. Presenter: Katie Popperwell Producer: Ekene Akalawu

Documentary of the week: Nihal speaks to Gareth about his two part BBC documentary, that charts his attempts to transform the lives of young prisoners by starting a choir.
Superfan, Jenion swings by to offer her two cents as a choral director alongside Paula and Tyler in discussing the BBC docu-series, "The Choir: Our School by the Tower." This show chronicles the work of choirmaster, Gareth Malone as he takes on the task of orchestrating a coming-home concert with the choir at Kensington-Aldridge Academy (North Kensington, London, UK). In June 2017, an adjacent residential tower called Grenfell succumbed to a blazing fire claiming the lives of seventy-two, five of which were students of the school. You don't need to have seen this documentary to get a strong sense of how music transforms the students while healing a broken community in the wake of a most tragic and preventable incident. After years of struggle, attempts and control, hard work and driving business results, how does this translate suddenly into ease and flow and vibe, even to the extent of both N&J channeling writing, downloading words and ideas in abundance, and allowing wonderful opportunities and synchronicity into both of their lives that make them both exclaim in wonder? How do you decide when to push and when to allow? In The Show Nicola is enjoying her stay in Sydney with her brother Alex; the ferries, the zoo, a Japanese restaurant, meeting two chaps from America, speaking at a coaching and leadership event with 70+ attendees, a mani-pedi and more treats. She’s delighted to have been asked by Lisa Warner of Fink Cards to add 7 more questions to her list of 43 about money and she’ll have a full set. She’s noticing she’s feeling some marketing fatigue and is even thinking of NOT sending out a newsletter this week, even after having written it. She’s being guided by vibe and intuition, and experimenting too. What's Fuelled Their Fire? Nicola is totally inspired about her writing. She’s reading and writing scripts and doing some more study, including Neil Gaiman’s Masterclass. Judith’s loving the Own It! podcast right now. There’s a new (7th) Patreon in Sharon Gaskin, and the influx of new members to the free companion Facebook Group enables community building, getting to know the listeners and invite them on as guests, and creates dialogues and relationships with listeners all around the world, even a potential new client this week for Judith from the podcast. Today I’ve been chatting to some amazing women who have founded Strength Behind the Strong. Sharon, Emma and Vanessa are from the very first Military Wives Choirs in the BBC television show, The Choir with Gareth Malone. Together with a number of other military wives they volunteered their time and worked together to create the charity The Military Wives Choirs Foundation. A legacy of the success of the No.1 single ‘Wherever You Are’, the charity has gone on to support thousands of women in the military community signing in choirs. Now, led by Sharon, they are focused on bridging the gap in support of military wives and their families with Strength Behind the Strong. Strength Behind the Strong emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and support the community, and a desire for actions to speak louder than words. A desire to help women just like us in their everyday lives and in times of crisis. I really hope you enjoy this very special episode.

Gareth Malone is a choirmaster who has coaxed and cajoled people from nervous adults to reluctant teenagers to open their mouths and sing for the pure joy of it - in front of television cameras. Gareth's first two TV series, which charted his attempts to build successful choirs in schools with little or no tradition of singing together, both won major awards, and gripped and inspired viewers. He has since also worked widely on TV with adult groups from a wide range of backgrounds, and his Military Wives Choir even hit the top of the charts at Christmas.Once described as a human tuning fork, Gareth loved music from an early age - and as he recalls, his parents and grandmother took a strong interest in his own youthful performances, from his very first school concerts. As a teenager, he felt an outsider amongst his fellow pupils, because he found his music teacher so inspiring. After time spent as a youth worker, and as a music educator, Gareth's TV series have taken him all over the country becoming - in his words - "an evangelist for music.".
