George Szell took over the Cleveland Orchestra in 1946, and, once he had created the instrument he needed, he started an extensive series of recordings for CBS (American Columbia, now Sony Classical). The focus was on the great works of the Austro-German repertoire and, needless to say, the nine Beethoven symphonies and a selection of overtures were among them (recorded between 1957 and 1967). Sony Classical have just gathered together the symphonies and overtures from the large 'George Szell Complete Columbia Collection' set from 2018, and are releasing them on seven CDs on December 13 and also digitally (already available). James Jolly went to talk to Gramophone's long-serving contributor Rob Cowan about the recordings, and also about George Szell as a conductor in general.

With that incredible background, you can only imagine how thrilling it was for me to chat with the extraordinary John Rubenstein! In Part 1, we delve into John's fascinating childhood and his initial steps into the world of composing. He began by writing for school projects and eventually transitioned into film scoring. John shares how the movie Chinatown influenced him and his special connection with trumpeter Uan Rasey, whose haunting solos left a lasting impact. We also explore the art of writing scores in Hollywood, discussing the nuances between composing for TV series and films. Then, we shift to John's acting career, highlighting his lead role in Pippin under the direction of the legendary Bob Fosse. We wrap up this segment by discussing the challenges of dealing with nerves and taking auditions. In Part 2, we take a detour to discuss a memorable evening when John starred in Children of a Lesser God at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, while his father performed at the Music Center. John reminisces about playing for George Szell and shares insights into his father's experience recording with Fritz Reiner. Once again we have reached the climax of the penitential season of Lent, the most theologically significant week in the Christian calendar, namely Holy Week. Even for those who are not observant Christians, this period, standing as it does on the threshold of spring, the season of rebirth, can be a time of meditation and remembrance. To help support this contemplative moment I have compiled selections from some of the larger oratorios and liturgical works composed during the Romantic era performed by some of the greatest classical vocalists of the last century. Composers include Brahms, Dvořák, Rossini, Schubert, Franck, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, and Elgar; singers include sopranos Margaret Marshall, Leontyne Price, Pilar Lorengar, Judith Raskin, and Elizabeth Harwood; mezzo-sopranos Betty Allen, Alfreda Hodgson, and Shirley Verrett; tenors David Rendall, Alejandro Ramírez, and Richard Lewis; and bass-baritones Tom Krause and Franz Crass led by conductors Andrew Davis, Eugene Ormandy, James Conlon, George Szell, Rafael Kubelik, Michel Corboz, and Herbert von Karajan. No matter what your faith or belief system, there is an outpouring of beautiful music and singing contained in this episode that will fully engage your mind and spirit. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Today we observe a significant event in the history of Countermelody, namely, our 200th episode! I decided that there was no better way to celebrate than to devote a full episode to the great Lotte Lehmann (1888-1976), who vies with Claudia Muzio as one of my two favorite singers of all time. Lehmann was originally a conservatory flunkie, but somehow got her act together to become one of the most expressive and imaginative singers, both of opera and of art song, that ever lived. From the first time I heard this warm, enveloping voice allied to a theatrical, emotional style of delivery, I was in love. Though I have frequently featured her in individual cuts on the podcast, this is the first time she has been featured on her own episode. She is heard in live, studio, and radio recordings made between the years 1916 and 1958, all of which reveal her in all aspects of her sublime artistry and in the company of some of the greatest artists of her era, from Arturo Toscanini to Richard Tauber to George Szell, to her preferred accompanist, Paul Ulanowsky. Choosing the selections for this week's program was like reencountering an old friend. The episode begins with a brief tribute to the late Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, who died a week ago at the age of 70 and to the evocative singer Astrud Gilberto, who died this past week at the age of 83. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Synopsis The fact that a new opera might debut at the Salzburg Festival in Austria is not in itself an unusual occurrence. But in August of the year 2000, the new opera in question was "L'Amour de Loin" or "Distant Love" by the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho – making it the first opera by a female composer ever to be staged at the prestigious international Festival, and one that opened to rave reviews. Born in Helsinki in 1952, Saariaho now lives with her husband and children in Paris. She has said that though she loves Helsinki, she's more comfortable in a city where she is not a celebrity. "I'm too well recognized in Finland," says Saariaho. "When I say this to colleagues in America, they think it's fantastic that there is a country where contemporary music composers can be esteemed public personalities." Speaking of summer-time opera premieres, Richard Wagner's "Die Walküre" had its first performance as part of his "Ring Cycle" on today's date in 1876, at Wagner's own theater in Bayreuth, a small town in Southern Germany. Some early critics thought building a big theater in such an out-of-the-way place was a monumental act of folly, but Wagnerites have been making the midsummer pilgrimage there for over 125 years – despite the lack of air-conditioning in Wagner's theater. Appropriately, it's some of the warmest music from "Die Walküre" – the "Magic Fire" scene that brings the opera to its close. Music Played in Today's Program Kaija Saariaho (b. 1952) –…à la fumée (Petri Alanko, f; Anssi Karttunen, vcl; Los Angeles Philharmonic; Esa-Pekka Salonen, cond.) Donald Macleod explores Henriëtte Bosmans' rise to fame as both a pianist and a composer. Henriëtte Bosmans seemed destined for a life in music from the moment of her birth, in 1895. Her father was the principal solo cellist in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra and her mother a piano teacher at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Bosmans developed a flourishing career and won international success with her Concert Piece for Violin and Orchestra. As a concert pianist she performed alongside conductors such as Ernest Ansermet and George Szell. Bosmans's mother was a Jew and, although Bosmans didn't consider herself Jewish, her ancestry played a significant role in the events of her life. She lived through the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, when tens of thousands of Amsterdam Jews were deported to concentration camps, including her fellow citizen, Anne Frank. This week, Donald Macleod is joined by Bosmans expert Dr Helen Metzelaar and also Dr Laurien Vastenhout from Amsterdam's Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide. Synopsis Today's date marks the birthday of a 20th century Czech composer you perhaps have never heard of. Viktor Kalabis was born in 1923 and by age 6, was giving public piano performances. All the signs pointed to a brilliant career. But first Kalabis had to face – and surmount–two major political hurdles. First, his formal musical studies were delayed by the Nazi occupation of his country in 1938, when he was forced into factory work; then, after the war, Kalabis met and married a young harpsichordist named Zuzana Ruzickova, who was a concentration camp survivor. Victor was a Gentile, but in Stalinist Czechoslovakia, anti-Semitism was rampant and marrying a Jew was frowned upon. To make matters worse, both Victor and Zuzana refused to join the Communist Party, hardly what one would call “a smart career move” in those years. Even so, Kalabis began to attract commissions and performances of his music at home and abroad, and following the 1989 Velvet Revolution, Kalabis assumed a more prominent position in his country's musical life. His symphonies, concertos, and chamber works are now regarded as some of the most important contributions to Czech music in the late 20th century. Music Played in Today's Program Viktor Kalabis (1923 – 2006) — Piano Concerto No. 1 (Zuzana Ruzickova, p; Czech Philharmonic; Karel Sejna, cond.) The First Symphony was born in a period of particular compositional fertility, so much so that it was drafted in a few days and completed in less than a month, between January and February 1841. The creative freshness, the carefree lightness of the thematic seals of this work are partly explained by the subtitles assigned, and subsequently removed, of the various movements: Spring awakening - Evening - Companions of happy games - Full spring, brief programmatic hints which, far from any kind of bucolic descriptivism, suggest the unitary feeling with which it is the whole composition was thought of. Robert Schumann (1810 - 1856) – Sinfonia n. 1 in si bemolle maggiore "La Primavera", op. 38 1. Andante un poco maestoso - Allegro molto vivace [00:05] 2. Larghetto [09:56] 3. Scherzo. Molto vivace [15:50] 4. Allegro animato e grazioso [21:26] The Cleveland Orchestra George Szell, conductor (recording - october 1958)

Synopsis On today's date in 1935, at the Church of Saint François-Xavier in Paris, organist Geneviève de la Salle gave the first complete performance of the three-movement Suite, Op. 5, by the French composer, teacher, and virtuoso organist Maurice Duruflé. If you sing in a choir or are a fan of choral music, you're probably familiar with Duruflé's serene and tranquil “Requiem,” Op. 9, which premiered some 12 years later. Duruflé's Op. 5 premiered in 1935, his Op. 9 in 1947, so you might reasonably conclude the composer was a slow worker – which he was.  He was also a very self-critical perfectionist whose catalog of works is rather small, but exquisitely crafted.  In all, Duruflé's output comprises less than 15 published works, of which seven are for organ. Duruflé's music is firmly embedded in the French tradition of organ composers like César Franck and Louis Vierne, and orchestral composers like Debussy, Ravel, and Duruflé's own composition teacher, Paul Dukas.  The great French organist Marie-Claire Alain, when asked to describe Duruflé's music, replied "it is a perfectly honest art… He was not an innovator but a traditionalist… Duruflé evolved and amplified the old traditions, making them his own."  Music Played in Today's Program Maurice Durufle (1902-1986) — Organ Suite, Op. 5 (Todd Wilson, o (Schudi organ at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Dallas, Texas)) Delos 3047 On This Day Births 1752 - Italian composer Muzio Clementi, in Rome; 1878 - English composer Rutland Boughton, in Aylesbury; Deaths 1837 - Irish composer John Field, age 54, in Moscow (Julian date: Jan.11); 1908 - American composer and pianist Edward MacDowell, age 47, in New York; 1981 - American composer Samuel Barber, age 70, in New York; Premieres 1724 - Bach: Sacred Cantata No. 73 ("Herr, wie du willst, so schicks mit mir") performed on the 3rd Sunday after Epiphany as part of Bach's first annual Sacred Cantata cycle in Leipzig (1723/24); 1729 - Bach: Sacred Cantata No. 156 ("Ich steh mit einem Fuss im Grabe") probably performed in Leipzig on the 3rd Sunday after Epiphany as part of Bach's fourth annual Sacred Cantata cycle (to texts by Christian Friedrich Henrici, a.k.a. "Picander") during 1728/29; 1895 - MacDowell: Suite No. 2 (":Indian"), at the old Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, by the Boston Symphony, with Emil Paur conducting; On the same program, MacDowell appeared as the soloist in his own Piano Concerto No. 1; 1933 - Bartók: Piano Concerto No. 2, in Frankfurt, with Hans Robaud conducting and the composer as soloist; 1936 - Chavez: "Sinfonia India," on a radio broadcast by the Columbia Symphony, conducted by the composer; 1948 - Diamond: Symphony No. 4, by the Boston Symphony, Leonard Bernstein conducting; 1963 - Peter Mennin: Symphony No. 7, by the Cleveland Orchestra, George Szell conducting; 1973 - Elliott Carter: String Quartet No. 3, in New York City, by the Juilliard String Quartet; This work won the Pulitzer Prize for music in that year (This was Carter's second Pulitzer Prize); 1999 - Thea Musgrave: "Three Women," in San Francisco, by the Women's Philharmonic, A. Hsu conducting; Others 1894 - Czech composer Antonin Dvorák presents a concert of African-American choral music at Madison Square Concert Hall in New York, using an all-black choir, comprised chiefly of members of the St. Philip's Colored Choir; On the program was the premiere performance of Dvorák's own arrangement of Stephen Foster's "Old Folks at Home," which featured vocal soloists Sissierette Jones and Harry T. Burleigh; 1943 - Duke Ellington and his orchestra present their first concert at Carngie Hall in New York, presenting the "official" premiere of Ellington's "Black, Brown and Beige" Suite (This work had received its world premiere at a trial performance the preceding day at Rye High School in Rye, New York). Synopsis Today's date in 1913 marks the birthday of American composer Vivian Fine in Chicago. At the tender age of five she became a scholarship piano student at the Chicago Musical College. As she grew up she became enthralled with the great composers and performers she heard at her regular visits to the Chicago Symphony. Vivian Fine initially intended to be a concert pianist, but theory studies with American composer Ruth Crawford Seeger nudged her towards composition.  Vivian Fine became an avid follower of the emerging “Ultra-Modern” school of composers, including Henry Cowell, who proved to be one of her early mentors.  Fine's debut as a composer came in Chicago when she was 16, and at 17 she moved to New York City to she studied composition with Roger Sessions and orchestration with George Szell. When Roger Sessions saw her sketches for her “Concertante for Piano and Orchestra” in 1944, he commented: “Now we are colleagues,” and George Szell praised its orchestration. Teaching became an important part of Fine's own professional life, first at New York University and Juilliard, and ultimately at Bennington College. Following a traffic accident in Vermont, Vivian Fine died in March of 2000, at the age of 86. Synopsis It was on today's date in 1922 that the 49-year-old English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams conducted the American premiere of his Third, or “Pastoral” Symphony at the Litchfield County music festival in Norfolk, Connecticut. It was his first trip to the U.S. and he reacted to American landscapes and customs with both wonderment and amusement. He found the Woolworth building in New York more impressive than Niagara Falls, writing to his friend Gustav Holst that “I've come to the conclusion that the Works of Man terrify me more than the Works of God.”  He was also bemused by America's summertime fondness for chicken salad, which he called “beyond powers of expression.” As for the premiere American performance of his “Pastoral” Symphony, he reported it had been “excellent.” Vaughan Williams would return to the United States twice more before his death in 1958. By that time his music had become very popular in American. George Szell in Cleveland, Rafael Kubelik in Chicago, and Dimtri Mitropoulos in New York were all in heated competition to secure rights to the American premiere of his Seventh Symphony, for example. Spoiler alert: Kubelik and the Chicago Symphony won out. He was first a member of the Rochester Philharmonic, then the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and finally the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. As a soloist he has performed around the world and was a member of the famed Los Angeles Brass Quintet. At a time when tuba was not considered a solo instrument, he raised the level and standard to new heights. In Part 1 of our conversation, Roger talks about his friendship with fellow tubist Tommy Johnson, playing with the Rochester, Concertgebouw, and Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestras. We also talk about when he played with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Brass Quintet and why he turned down George Szell when Szell asked him to join the Cleveland Orchestra.

On today’s date in 1918, the celebratory “American Fantasy” of the Dublin-born American composer Victor Herbert opened the first program of the newly-formed Cleveland Orchestra. Cleveland had reason to celebrate. World War I had ended one month earlier, and, for some time, city organizers had been trying to build a hometown orchestra. In December of 1918, Father John Powers of St. Ann’s Church wanted to give a concert to raise some money for his parish, and, as Father Powers also happened to be a fine Irish tenor, offered to perform on the same bill as the new orchestra, just in case the untried ensemble of 54 didn’t prove to be a sufficient box-office attraction. So, along with Father Power’s songs and Herbert’s “American Fantasy,” conductor Nikolai Sokoloff lead the Orchestra in Bizet’s “Carmen” Suite, Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, Liadov’s tone poem “The Enchanted Lake,” and, for a rousing closer, Liszt’s tone poem “Les Preludes.” Over the next 100 years, especially during the period when George Szell was music director of the Cleveland Orchestra, the ensemble came to be regarded as one of the best in the world.

That's what Jay calls a Bach piece arranged for organ by Jean Guillou: pure joy. There is some more pure joy in this episode too—including the final movement of Brahms's Horn Trio, which Jay plays to honor Myron Bloom, the great French-horn player who died on September 26. He also honors, at the end, Christopher Rouse, the American composer, who died on September 21. Music, said Rouse, in a statement to be issued after his passing, “has given me life and a reason for living.” Jay also plays some Ella Fitzgerald, some Leontyne Price, and more. There is also a tale from opera lore: about Rudolf Bing and George Szell, who were too big for the same town. Schumann's Symphony No. 2 expresses a journey of redemption like perhaps no other symphony. It begins in the depths of Schumann's physical and mental breakdown of 1842, and ends in grateful thanks for his recovery. Whatever tragedies Schumann experienced later, this piece is a marker of a happier time, though it reminded Schumann of "dark days." We'll talk all about it this week on Sticky Notes! Februar 1940 in Breslau geboren.
