Memories of love, loss and cabaret through the London AIDS crisis, by It's a Sin's Jill Nalder. When Jill Nalder arrived at drama school in London in the early 1980s, she was ready for her life to begin. With her band of best friends—of which many were talented young gay men with big dreams of their own—she grabbed London by the horns: partying with drag queens at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, hosting cabarets at her glamorous flat, flitting across town to any jobs could get. But soon rumours were spreading from America about a frightening illness being dubbed the 'gay flu', and Jill and her friends—spirited Juan Pablo, Jae with his beautiful voice, upbeat Dursley and many others—found that their formerly carefree existence now under threat. In this moving memoir, It's a Sin's Jill Nalder tells the true story of her life during the AIDS crisis, and that of friends and colleagues, doctors and nurses, activists and fundraisers. She recounts juggling a busy West End career while campaigning for AIDS awareness and research, educating herself and caring for the sick. Most of all, she shines a light on those who were stigmatised and shamed, and remembers those brave and beautiful boys who were lost too soon.

This was followed by ‘Every Open Eye' in 2015 and ‘Love is Dead' in 2018. Their fourth and highly acclaimed concept album, ‘Screen Violence' was release in 2021.   Amy Lamé is a radio and TV presenter, performer and writer. In this episode of Queers & Co., I’m joined by Lady Blue Phoenix, burlesque performer and member of the Rock with the Foxes troupe. When on stage, she's been described as a force of nature! We chat about Columbia - the long-forgotten personification of the USA, our power to make social change, creating safer spaces in burlesque, learning to live with mental ill-health and what happens when we can no longer vault our pain away, embracing our shadow side and her experience of coming out as bisexual. Lady Blue Phoenix: Hello. Gem: How are you today? Lady Blue Phoenix: I'm good. I'm just relaxing after a busy week at work. Gem: So, we've just been chatting about quite a lot of interesting stuff already actually, so we haven't recorded it. But I've got a few things that I am keen to ask you, but it'd be really cool first if you could introduce yourself so we can learn a bit more about you. Lady Blue Phoenix: Okay. Well firstly, my name is Lady Blue Phoenix. I originate from Seattle, Washington in America. I've lived abroad now since 2008 - five years in Japan and Oh God…  eight years here. I did a lot of dance in the States, so fire belly dance, things like that. I've always loved the dance industry. I'm never actually majored in it, but I just loved that freedom. So when I came to England, after living in Japan for five years, I got into burlesque. Me and my partner went to a show. I saw these amazing people on stage bearing their souls, baring their bodies to the world. And I was literally floored. I was like, I want to do that, but then in the back of my head I had the whole, but I'm not a size zero. None of the girls on this stage were like size zero. Even in my head it was that whole, I have to be small to do it. And my partner, he just kind of looked at me and said, can you please just go ask about it? Gem: Amazing. Lady Blue Phoenix: And I asked about it and got involved and have been doing burlesque now since, well 2016, when I decided to start doing solos. Beforehand, the first year and a half I was doing lots of lessons and little bit of troop work and things. But then 2016 I decided to branch out and do solos. And that's how Lady Blue Phoenix was born. Gem: Amazing. And does your work have any kind of themes or are there specific stories that you tell when you're on stage? Lady Blue Phoenix: It's a variety. Some of my acts have a story. Some of acts are just me kind of expressing that freedom of movement that you don't get to see in daily life. Some of my acts are just me being free on stage and just showing the world that freedom, but some of my acts or really just showing the confidence that anyone

WARNING: VERY EXPICIT FROM THE VERY START (hehe). 134.5bpm. Live set mixed from vinyl with no computer post-editing. www.richb.co.uk Recorded in the days of The Fruit Machine (Wednesdays at Heaven) and Sunday afternoons at The Market Tavern, in Vauxhall, South London. I was lucky enough to be resident DJ at both in the mid-90's. The Sunday session was part of "The Vauxhall Shuffle" - the Sunday ritual of The Royal Vauxhall Tavern at lunchtime for the show by drag legend Adrella, followed by The Market Tavern (at the time the only venue in the country to legally serve booze out of regular pub hours - because it was supposed to be for the New Covent Garden Market workers haha. The venue was notorious for the food it had to serve to validate the license). On close at 7pm everyone would pile back into the RVT for the evening session and show by another drag legend Regina Fong. R.I.P. both Adrella and Regina. The first track - Pussy "Suck My Pussy" became my trademark tune, especially on the main dancefloor at The Fruit Machine at Heaven where I would start my set with it most weeks. So brazen. The second track is a remix of Donna Giles "And I'm Telling You" that I did with Matt Kootchi, and was never released. Here for the very first time. Also included are: E-Motion - The Naughty North & The Sexy South Natural Born Grooves - Fore Runner Happy Clappers - I Believe Mighty Dub Katz - Magic Carpet Ride Sweet Pussy Pauline (Candy Girls) - Work This Pussy Kadoc - Night Train Moving Melodioes - Indica Commander Tom - Are Am Eye? and some Tony de Vit, of course.
