We're going in for a really deep dive on Achtung Baby. In the first of three parts, we pick things up with Bono's "gotta go away and dream it all up again" speech at the end of the Love Town Tour when things had started to get a little show-bizzy. We ask some pointed questions about what exactly happened between the end of the Lovetown Tour and when the band touched down in Berlin on October 3, 1990 to start recording. We go through the heavy drama of the time at Hansa Studios all the way through to the Dogtown Sessions in Dublin when the pall had finally lifted.

Sina Peschke trifft Herbert Grönemeyer Nach vier Jahren Pause ist Herbert Grönemeyer zurück und bringt gerade sein neues Album auf den Markt , sein sechzehntes mit dem Titel: „Das ist los“. Wieder ist es eine Herausforderung für alle Fans, denn er macht´s uns nicht leicht, weder mit der Musik und schon gar nicht mit seinen Texten. „Da muss man sich reinhören, und man muss sich Zeit geben.“, sagt Sina Peschke, nach dem sie Herbert Grönemeyers Album das erste Mal gehört hat. „Aber es wirkt schon beim zweiten Mal hören.“ Grönemeyer ist nicht nur der erfolgreichste deutsche Popstar, sondern auch so etwas wie das politische Gewissen Deutschlands, auch auf seinem neuen Album. Es geht um die Krisen dieser Welt, um Zuversicht, Zusammenhalt vor allem aber um Optimismus. Warum er gern provoziert, warum er Madonna recht gibt, wenn sie sagt: „Man wird nicht erfolgreich durch die Dinge, die man tut, sondern durch die Dinge, die man nicht tut.“ ..und wie er sich in seiner neuen Rolle als später Vater entwickelt, das alles hört Ihr in dieser Folge "Sina Peschke trifft..." Die Sendung wurde in den Hansa Studios in Berlin aufgezeichnet, in denen Herbert Grönemeyer ein eigenes Studio hat. Auch David Bowie, Falco oder Depeche Mode haben hier Musik aufgenommen.

Vor 45 Jahren erscheint das Debütalbum "Nina Hagen Band" – das erste Album, das Nina Hagen zusammen mit ihrer westdeutschen Band aufgenommen hat. Eine Revolution der deutschen Musikszene. Das Album ist voller – damals unglaublich provokanter – weiblicher Selbstbeherrschung. Irgendwo zwischen Punkrock, Oper und Reggae angesiedelt. Eine ganze Generation von Mädchen und jungen Frauen hatten schon lange auf ein Album gewartet, dass ihnen eine Stimme gibt, selbstbewusst, selbstbestimmt und voller weiblicher Power. Nachdem Hagens Stiefvater Liedermacher Wolf Biermann 1976 aus der DDR ausgebürgert worden war, setzte sie sich zunächst für seine Wiedereinreise ein, folgte ihm aber, nachdem ihr Antrag abgelehnt worden war. Er wurde zu ihrem Mentor und verschafft Nina schlussendlich auch ihren ersten Plattenvertrag bei CBS Records. Das war ein unglaublicher Freifahrtschein. Ihr Weg führte Sie zuerst nach Hamburg, wo sie auf Udos Panikorchester traf bevor sie 1976 nach London ging. Hagen entdeckte während ihres Aufenthalts neue Musikstile und ließ sich vor allem vom Punk inspirieren. Sie traf sich mit Ari Up, der Leadsängerin der Band "The Slits" und gemeinsam schrieben sie den Song "Pank", der später auf dem Album erschien. Inspiriert von der Londoner Musikszene kehrte Hagen nach Berlin zurück und traf sich mit den Mitgliedern der Band Lokomotive Kreuzberg, Manfred Praeker, Herwig Mitteregger und Bernhard Potschka. Zu den drei Musikern gesellte sich anschließend Reinhold Heil und gemeinsam mit Hagen gründeten sie die "Nina Hagen Band". Im November 1977 unterschrieb die Band einen Vertrag mit CBS Records unter dem Management von Jim Rakete. Die meisten Songs ihres Debütalbums hatte Hagen bereits in der DDR geschrieben. Aufgenommen wurde das Album in den Hansa-Studios in Berlin. Dort wurden zu dieser Zeit große - auch internationale - Produktionen mit namenhaften Künstlern wie David Bowie oder Iggy Pop gemacht. Um es mit Nina Hagens Worten zu sagen "Sie wollte Quatsch machen und ein bisschen mit ihrer Stimme zaubern", was ihr auch gelungen ist. Das Album war ein kommerzieller Erfolg. In Deutschland erreichte es in der Spitze Platz elf. "Nina Hagen Band" wurde vom Bundesverband Musikindustrie mit Gold ausgezeichnet und hat sich über 250.000 Mal verkauft.Nina Hagen präsentiert sich bunt, schrill, politisch und unterhaltend. Sie steht für die weibliche Selbstbestimmung und weibliches Selbstbewusstsein und für die Befreiung der Frau. In "Nina Hagen Band" werden Themen wie die Kritik am Konsum, Sex zu Dritt und die Begeisterung für die Natur behandelt. Mattiu Defuns trennt sich nicht nur von seiner Band, auch von seinem Nachnamen. Ausserdem arbeitet er mit einem neuen Produzententeam zusammen. Warum sich Mattiu neu erfindet und wie die sechs neuen Songs in drei Sessions in einer Hütte fast zuoberst in den Bündner Bergen und in den Hansa Studios in Berlin entstanden sind, hört ihr im Interview mit Simon Lechmann.

Seit 2003 hat sich der medienscheu gewordene Superstar vom Musikbusiness ferngehalten. Der melancholische Song "Where Are We Now" und das dazugehörige Video sind eine Reminiszenz an seine Berliner Jahre 1976-1978, als er in Schöneberg wohnte und in den Hansa-Studios nahe der Mauer die Alben "Low" und "Heroes" aufnahm, deren Musik auch von Kraftwerk und Neu inspiriert war. Mit seinem Wohnungsnachbarn Iggy Pop tauchte der Expressionismus-Fan Bowie tief in die Westberliner Clubszene und die deutsche Kultur ein. Die Sendung von Thomas Mense entstand 2013 anlässlich der Veröffentlichung des neuen Bowie Albums "The Next Day". David Bowie starb drei Jahre später, am 10. Januar 2016.

U2 – also Bono, The Edge und Co. – haben mal gesagt “Häuslichkeit ist der Feind des Rock 'n' Roll”. Und diesen Gedanken hat die Band auch gelebt. Vor allem 1990, als die vier Bandmitglieder quasi den letzten Flug von Dublin nach Ost-Berlin genommen haben, um dort in den Hansa-Studios, in denen auch schon David Bowie Musik aufgenommen hatte, ihr neues Album einzuspielen. Mit dabei Produzentenlegende Brian Eno. Die Aufgabe für die Band war klar: Alles, was nach Musik von U2 klang, musste weg. Die Band wollte sich komplett neu erfinden. In einem Ost-Berlin zur Zeit der Wende und des Umbruchs, während es auch bei der Band intern kriselte, die Ehe von The Edge vor dem Aus stand. Eine Mammutaufgabe. J. Willgoose Esq. from Public Service Broadcasting speaks with Gabi Biesinger of ARD about his band's latest album 'Bright Magic', which was inspired by and recorded in Berlin. They explore why Berlin has been such a magnet for British musicians, such as David Bowie and Depeche Mode, discuss what it's like to record in the hallowed halls of Hansa Studios and look at the German lyrics and British-German collaborations on PSB's new album.

Gesagt, getan – bei Alex Jacobi ist das kein erdachtes Lebensmotto, kein Wandtattoo, kein Allerweltsspruch, der Typ ist so: Intuitiv, begeistert und begeisternd, ideenreich und leidenschaftlich. Heute zählt der Audio-Unternehmer aus Aachen mit seinem Podcast „With Love And Data“, Projekten wie Wundervoices oder Sonarbird, einer Podcast-Plattform für Publisher, und vielen Konzepten mehr zu den prägenden Figuren der Branche. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, die Sex Pistols, die Saat ist gelegt. Alex gründet mit 14 Jahren seine erste Band, veranstaltet kurz darauf bereits Musikfestivals an seiner Schule. Nach dem Abi sieht er für sich zwei Karriere-Optionen: Entweder er wird Doktor in Physik – oder der zweite Dr. Dre. Er lernt das Studiowesen von der Pike auf, produziert selbst in den legendären Hansa Studios zu Berlin, fliegt ins New Yorker Mastering-Mekka zu Howie Weinberg. Als er in der digitalen Revolution neue Wege realisiert, über eine Online-App fürs Voice Casting einen ersten Durchbruch erlebt, gibt es für ihn kein Halten mehr. In this episode of Can't Find My Way Home, I was joined by Robert John Hope. Rob is an Irish, Berlin based singer/songwriter whose music is rooted in ambient folk and alternative pop/rock. We sat down and chatted about both his expat and musical journey so far. As frontman of Irish outfit Senakah, Robert spent 8 years touring America and Europe both with the band and as a solo artist, releasing two albums to critical acclaim. With three top 20 chart hits in Ireland under his belt, he travelled to the US playing close to 300 shows in over 40 states, taking in legendary venues such as the Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood and the Boulder Theatre, as well as the South By Southwest Festival. In April, 2021 he released his debut solo album - "Plasticine Heart” recorded on a ship in Berlin's Treptower Park, to great reviews. Rob details how the constant touring made him a better musician, as well as the ups and downs that it entails. We talk about visual accompaniments, soundscapes and musical styles for the new album, as well as finding out more about the fantastic lead song on the album. Rob recalls how working with Noel Hogan (Cranberries guitarist) helped elevate and develop his approach to recording new material. Rob will also be recording in Berlin's famous Hansa Studios for his next project, later this year. If "The Joshua Tree" was the album that propelled Irish band U2 to the stratosphere of rock success, Achtung Baby was the album that would cement them in that status permanently.  The band was coming off mixed success with their hybrid live/studio album "Rattle and Hum," and were struggling directionally.  The band felt that they were not prepared for the success they had received, or as drummer Larry Mullin, Jr. put it, "we were the biggest, but we weren't the best.”Achtung Baby draws its inspiration from German reunification, much like the Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum drew inspiration from America.  U2 began recording in Berlin at Hansa Studios.  They arrived just before German reunification.  Rather than being inspired by reunification, the band found places gloomy and neglected.  Morale continued to falter as they struggled with the direction of the album, and actually considered breaking up.  With the encouragement of producer Brian Eno, the band continued on, and recommitted themselves to the group after returning to Dublin during Christmas.  Recording was relocated to Dublin in February of 1991.Musically, the album has a more Eurocentric feel.  Bono and the Edge were gravitating to electronica and new sounds while Clayton and Mullin, Jr. preferred sounds more reminiscent of classic rock.  The synthesis created a sound that was less "over the top" than previous U2 works, and really opened up the commercial success of the group.  While the sound might be less "over the top," the forthcoming tour called "Zoo TV" was the epitome of "over the top."  By this time, U2 was performing not in concert halls, but in stadiums.This is an album that will definitely get your attention. Even Better Than the Real ThingThis second track on the album was the fourth single released.  The song originated from a guitar riff created during the "Rattle and Hum" sessions.  The song is about the instant gratification of commercialism and its effects on society.  There's a more "techno" sound in this song, with the guitar delays and the double octaves throughout.Mysterious WaysWhat a great hook at the start of this song!  Jesus Jones was an influence on the group at the time, and you can feel it on this track.  The song itself is an idealization of women, and the trap of separating them into angels and devils.  The video was shot in Morocco and used a belly dancer to portray that "she moves in mysterious ways."OneThis is the song that brought the group back together when they were struggling in their recording sessions in Berlin.  The song itself is vaguely about relationships and may have been influenced by the dissolution of the Edge's marriage to Aislinn O'Sullivan.  Until the End of the WorldThis deeper cut from the album is set in a Biblical setting with Bono singing as Judas in a conversation with Jesus.  "We ate the food, we drank the wine.  Everybody having a good time except you.  You were talking about the end of the world."  It was never released as a single. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion picture “The Addams Family”The movie based on the 60's television series was released in November. STAFF PICKS:“Everything About You” by Ugly Kid JoeWayne kicks off the staff picks with a song off the EP Ugly As They Wanna Be.  The song describes everything the singer hates.  The name of the group is a spoof on the name of the group "Pretty Boy Floyd," and they have been described as the last glam metal band.  “Lies” by EMFRob takes us into the British alternative rock scene.  This is off EMF's debut album Schubert Dip.  EMF takes its name from a fan club of the band New Order called "Epsom Mad Funkers."  The album made it to number 3 on the UK charts, though it didn't do as well in the United States.  “The Sky is Crying” by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double TroubleBruce's Brings us a song posthumously released after Vaughan's helicopter crash in 1990.  It was originally recorded by Elmore James in 1959, and was performed by The AllmanBrothers Band at Duane Allman's funeral in 1971.  Jimmie Vaughan compiled the songs on this album, also called "The Sky is Crying," and all but one song had not been released previously.“Something to Talk About” by Bonnie RaittBrian's pick is Bonnie Raitt's breakout single.  Originally written by Shirley Eikhard, the song is about friends in a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business.  If everyone is assuming we're a couple, maybe we should give them something to talk about!   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Where's My Thing” by RushThis instrumental from Roll the Bones came after several songs started as instrumentals but became perfect for a particular lyric.  Finally, drummer and lyricist told the band “You keep promising to do this instrumental, and I'm not giving you any more lyrics until you write this thing.”

So far we've discussed the making of Bowie's landmark track “Heroes” — one of the most mythic songs in his cannon. Everything about its creation is loaded with drama. It was recorded in an old Nazi concert hall within sight of watchful East German snipers atop the Berlin Wall. And of course there was the famous kiss by the wall, which allegedly inspired one of the song's best known verses. Jordan's guest today not only worked at the legendary Hansa Studios (the so-called Hall by the Wall) when “Heroes” was recorded — he actually sang on it, nose to nose with Bowie himself. And that's just one of his many incredible stories. His name is Peter Burgon, and he worked as an assistant engineer under our previous guest, Edu Meyer. When Herr Meyer was on vacation during the sessions for ‘Heroes' in 1977, Peter stepped in and took over. Our last two episodes followed David Bowie in the late '70s as he recorded ‘Low' and ‘Heroes,' the twin pillars of his so-called Berlin Trilogy. (Sorry, ‘Lodger' fans.) These records are an artistic triumph on nearly ever level, and contain the most innovative music Bowie ever made. In addition to co-producer Tony Visconti and mad musical scientist Brian Eno, another crucial collaborator during the German sessions was Edu Meyer. Edu was an engineer at Hansa Studios — the famous Hall by the Wall that served as David's creative home during his time in Berlin. Edu helped David put the finishing touches on ‘Low,' and even played the mournful cello part on “Weeping Wall” — inspired by the symbol of division and oppression looming just outside the studio windows. He also assisted on the album's David produced for Iggy Pop, ‘The Idiot' and ‘Lust for Life.' Their working relationship stretched into the ‘80s, when David would return to Berlin to record the soundtrack to the Bertolt Brecht play ‘Baal' in 1981, and perform his legendary 1987 concert at the Reichstag. They'd remain friends until the end of David's life. El cuarto trabajo en estudio de Vetusta Morla es un viaje interior, una búsqueda sonora permanente, llena de dudas, emociones y sensaciones traducidas en melodías, armonías y ritmos que desde la primera escucha desencadenan múltiples reacciones al receptor. Mismo Sitio, Distinto Lugar, tal como lo cuenta el grupo va desde su local de ensayo de Madrid hasta los míticos Hansa Studios de Berlín. De Alemania a los recónditos Tarbox Road Studios en Cassadaga, en el norte de Estados Unidos, para terminar en el legendario Sterling Sound de Nueva York. Toda esta aventura ha sido compartida junto a músicos y productores como Campi Campón (Jorge Drexler, Natalia Lafourcade, Xoel López), Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, Tame Impala, The Flaming Lips, Spoon) o Greg Calbi (The National, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Fleet Floxes). El álbum comienza con Deséame Suerte en donde los sedales y lineas sintéticas se amalgaman con capas de guitarras cargadas de una visión sónica que se desarrolla durante todo el álbum, la sátira y la potencia absurda también son protagonistas en El Discurso del Rey y Palmeras en la Mancha convertida en la autentica bomba de esta piñata. Deséame Suerte es un retrato sin maquillaje sobre una cinta de meta convertida en kilómetro cero. La rienda de un futuro de rabiosas sacudidas que aun no ha sido domado. Todo lo que nos trajo hasta aquí, ya fue. Y ahora solo queda despedirlo con honores y encomendarnos a la fortuna antes de ascender la cima más alta, la que nos lleva, sin excusas, a los pies de nosotros mismos.    Para el videoclip de Deséame Suerte, Vetusta Morla ha vuelto a contar con el director ganador de un Premio Goya, Fernando Franco con quién ya presentaron los videoclips de las canciones Lo que te hace grande, El hombre del saco y Fuego.
