Welcome to The Gwart Show! Today, Ethereum bull Ryan Berckmans joins us to dissect Ethereum's current strategy and why he believes it remains on the right path despite recent challenges. Ryan explains the "hub and spokes" L1+L2 model, arguing that communication failures—not technical problems—damaged ETH sentiment. He breaks down why L2 growth combined with L1 scaling will drive Ethereum toward becoming a multi-trillion dollar asset, how blob fees will generate significant revenue, and why Solana's success doesn't threaten Ethereum's long-term dominance in the institutional market. Subscribe to the newsletter! https://newsletter.blockspacemedia.com # Notes: • L2s like Base hit 100M+ in Bitcoin-backed loans • World L2 has 12M verified humans with 25M accounts • Ethereum plans to scale to 48 blobs per block • Current blob usage at ~80% full (2.4 per block) • Rollups may pay ~30% of revenue for blob space • Median user fees could remain at ~$0.01 with scale Timestamps: 00:00 Start 00:22 Who is Ryan B? 01:12 Why bullish on ETH? 06:38 Failure to communicate 11:01 Is this a pivot? 18:32 Justin Drake is bad at PR 24:31 Lido 28:05 Solo staking 31:50 It's all SOL's fault 33:03 Vitalik changing narratives 35:14 Thoughts on Solana 44:03 WHY NGU now? 48:50 Blobs need to pay up

Jerry Jeff Walker, the singer and writer behind the classic hit “Mr. Bojangles,” never would have expected that his song, inspired by an experience in a New Orleans jail cell, would make Richard Nixon cry, or that it would be covered by Sammy Davis, Jr., the entertainment giant and, controversially, a supporter of Nixon. This work, told through the perspective of writer, performer and listener, traces these three men's overlapping journeys through the American consciousness. Chapters discuss the history of Walker's song, Davis's rise from rags to riches, Nixon's journey from grocer's son to president, and more.ABOUT Ryan B. CaseRyan B. Rucking More Demanding Than My Watch Thinks? [16:10] Adrian says: Hi Robb and Nikki Been a paleo, primal, natural movement  (insert newest label)  follower for over ten years. Recently started rucking after reading Michael Easter's book The Comfort Crisis. My question is “could rucking be more metabolically demanding than my watch says?” I stay consistent around 195-200 pounds at 6 feet tall. I train for Spartan races mostly. High amounts of zone 2 cardio as well as weight training before the season then mostly maintenance and Spartan specific movements as it gets closer to race time. But after just a few months of rucking my weight has been on a downward trend. Morning weigh in was 191 today and that's with the thanksgiving holiday only a couple weeks ago and I really eat as much as I want . I prioritize high protein and moderate fat but don't limit myself self to a set number of calories . As an example my watch says I burn 500 calories carrying 35 pounds on my back for 3.5 miles with elevation change around 1400 feet over that course. At a 16:00 min mile pace. Heart rate at a zone 2 pace the whole time for my age. My hypothesis is that it's more demanding than that. Thanks for all you have done for me and my family Adrian   2. Zone 2… yet again. [20:16] Liz says: Hey there, Robb and Nikki- I've always loved your data-driven approach to offering advice, as you can often explain why the same facts are interpreted so differently by professionals in the health and wellness space. I apologize, but since so many have asked about Zone 2 cardio, I'm wondering if you can explain why it has carried such a stigma in recent years? I'm a 44 year old perimenopausal woman, 150 pounds and 5'4” carrying a lot of muscle, and have been told by no fewer than 10 coaches to avoid Z2 at all costs due to its stress impact on aging female hormones. I'm one of those mesomorphs who puts on both fat and muscle very easily, and have always loved long, slow bouts of jogging (ever since being a teenager, I've run slow half and whole marathons). However, I've been told that if I do long cardio now it will rev up my cortisol, make me ravenous, burn muscle instead of fat, prevent me from sleeping, suppress thyroid, etc— in other words, all of the stuff that all health conscious middle-aged women women seem battle with. I'm honestly not sure if my body does better with strength training or cardio… I tend to remain about the same size no matter what. Right now, I do 4 strength sessions a week, eat 150-200 grams of protein a day (yes, I log it), walk loads for work (usually 15,000-25,000 steps daily), and seem to maintain my weight at where my Fitbit says I'm eating a 500 calorie deficit daily. I would love to get to a place where staying lean becomes easier, though! I'm wondering if you can explain why Zone 2 went from being maligned to trendy seemingly overnight, and if there are any caveats for ladies who are very sensitive to dwindling progesterone, etc. Thanks so much!   3. Healthy Meat Snack Ideas [34:34] Ryan B. says: Hi Robb & Nicki, I am looking for some tips to help with healthy meat snacks. My girlfriend and I eat fairly clean and do not have any "snacks" on hand that can satiate me. All of our meals are cooked at the time of consumption and I myself am not the greatest chef, so I have found it difficult to curb my hunger because most meals in our house take minimum 25 mins to prepare. I find myself looking for meat and we do not keep deli meat or store-bought sliced meat on hand and generally stay away because of the salt content (aside from my LMNT drinks!!) and highly processed forms of meat. I've thought of salami sticks but again, generally want to stay away from those types of quick snacks that get a bad rap. We've thought of just cooking up some steak and slicing it up but would like things to last a bit longer. Hope you can give some good tips! Love the podcast and book! Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: They gave LLMs access to physics simulators, published by ryan b on October 17, 2022 on LessWrong. Over at Google, large language models have been plugged into physics simulators to help them share a world model with their human interlocutors, resulting in big performance gains. They call it Mind's Eye.This is how the authors describe the work: Correct and complete understanding of properties and interactions in the physical world is not only essential to achieve human-level reasoning (Lake et al., 2017), but also fundamental to build a general-purpose embodied intelligence (Huang et al., 2022). In this work, we investigate to what extent current LMs understand the basic rules and principles of the physical world, and describe how to ground their reasoning with the aid of simulation. Our contributions are three-fold: We propose a new multi-task physics alignment dataset, UTOPIA, whose aim is to benchmark how well current LMs can understand and reason over some basic laws of physics (§2). The dataset contains 39 sub-tasks covering six common scenes that involve understanding basic principles of physics (e.g., conservation of momentum in elastic collisions), and all the ground-truth answers are automatically generated by a physics engine. We find that current large-scale LMs are still quite limited on many basic physics-related questions (24% accuracy of GPT-3 175B in zero-shot, and 38.2% in few-shot). We explore a paradigm that adds physics simulation to the LM reasoning pipeline (§3) to make the reasoning grounded within the physical world. Specifically, we first use a model to transform the given text-form question into rendering code, and then run the corresponding simulation on a physics engine (i.e., MuJoCo (Todorov et al., 2012)). Finally we append the simulation results to the input prompts of LMs during inference. Our method can serve as a plug-and-play framework that works with any LM and requires neither handcrafted prompts nor costly fine-tuning. We systematically evaluate the performance of popular LMs in different sizes on UTOPIA before and after augmentation by Mind's Eye, and compare the augmented performance with many existing approaches (§4.2). We find Mind's Eye outperforms other methods by a large margin in both zero-shot and few-shot settings. More importantly, Mind's Eye is also effective for small LMs, and the performance with small LMs can be on par or even outperform that of 100× larger vanilla LMs. This seems like a direct step down the CAIS path of development. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Common Knowledge is a Circle Game for Toddlers, published by ryan b on April 13, 2022 on LessWrong. I wanted to jot down a particular instance of a common interaction I have with my daughter. My child, wife, and I are sitting around the coffee table in the living room discussing the plan to take the car to the mechanic the next day. We describe this as going on an adventure to the child as a lingering holdover from isolation during covid, which seems to be fine because she enjoys car rides. What is different from the usual this time is that I am coming; normally car adventures are my wife driving, because she runs most of the errands. The following (simplified) dialogue takes place: Child: "Dad, can you come in the car tomorrow?" Me: "I am coming in the car tomorrow." Child: "Really?! You are coming?" Me: "Yes." Child: "Mom! Did you know Dad is coming in the car tomorrow?" Mom: "Yes! He is coming with us tomorrow." Child: "Dad! Mom knows you are coming tomorrow! You are both coming!" Me: "Yes!" Keep in mind we have all been present for the whole conversation. We are sitting around a coffee table. None of us are more than three feet from each other. It struck me that what my daughter was doing was trying to explicitly track what her mom and I knew. I expect this falls somewhere under the theory-of-mind stage of development, but what stuck out to me was the procedure she undertook, which looked something like three loops: One loop with me, of establishing the fact and confirming the fact. A lateral loop to mom, of establishing that mom knows the fact and confirming that mom knows the fact. A lateral loop back to me, of establishing that I know that mom knows, and confirming that I know that mom knows. The looping strategy reminded me of Circle Games, and only after this did it occur to me that the object of the game was common knowledge. My child has been playing these kinds of games for a while now, on reflection; but recently they have grown in frequency and elaboration enough that I began to wonder why she seemed to be spending more time on what I instinctively treat as mundane details. The connection to common knowledge did not crystalize until this event. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Wargaming AGI Development, published by ryan b on March 19, 2022 on LessWrong. I think wargames would be a useful tool for exploring AGI development scenarios. More specifically, I mean wargames of the kind used to train military officers in strategy. I think this format would help explore things like timelines and takeoff scenarios, in a way that is both concrete and transparent. The thought cropped up because I have been popping into the AMA/Discussion post for Late 2021 MIRI Conversations over the course of the last week. Over the course of the MIRI conversations, and again in the AMA, I saw a lot of the tactic of offering or requesting concrete situations to test or illustrate some point. Wargaming feels to me like a good way to generate concrete situations. I think we could answer this question from So8res: What's a story, full of implausibly concrete details but nevertheless a member of some largish plausible-to-you cluster of possible outcomes, in which things go well? (Paying particular attention to how early AGI systems are deployed and to what purposes, or how catastrophic deployments are otherwise forestalled.) Over the same period I was reading the MIRI Conversations I was reading/re-reading a series of posts on wargaming at War on the Rocks, which I was linked to from the comments in a book-notes post about military innovation. The oldest article of the lot focuses on the usefulness of wargames for teaching and learning; the original motivation for the author was how poorly they thought teaching a course on Thucydides went. As a highlight, I would like to point out a case where they considered a decision that had historically poor outcomes, but gained awareness of good motivations: Remarkably, four of the five Athenian teams actually attacked Syracuse on Sicily's east coast! As they were all aware that such a course had led to an Athenian disaster 2,500 years before, I queried them about their decision. Their replies were the same: Each had noted that the Persians were stirring, which meant there was a growing threat to Athens' supply of wheat from the Black Sea. As there was an abundance of wheat near Syracuse, each Athenian team decided to secure it as a second food source (and simultaneously deny it to Sparta and its allies) in the event the wheat from the Black Sea was lost to them. Along the way, two of the teams secured Pylos so as to raise helot revolts that would damage the Spartan breadbasket. Two of the teams also ended revolts in Corcyra, which secured that island's fleet for Athenian purposes, and had the practical effect of blockading Corinth. So, it turns out there were a number of good strategic reasons for Athens to attack Syracuse. Who knew? Certainly not any War College graduate over the past few decades. The article also references benefits from playing the game Diplomacy, which has been mentioned around here for similar purposes for a long time. There was also a recent-history overview of wargaming in the US Defense arena, which links to a bunch of examples and extolls wargaming in a competitive format to develop the US Defense talent pool. I included it mostly for the links to real-world examples, which include but are not limited to: games about specific, current strategic problems; games about integrating AI into warfare; some historical cases from the tactical to the strategic level. The part that persuaded me we could directly lift from wargames to explore AGI development is the use of wargames for exploring future wars. The important thing is the inclusion of capabilities which don't exist yet, reasoning about which is notoriously hard. A highlight here is the kind of stuff people learn from the games: First, all games are competitive and involve teams fighting other teams. There is a big difference between fighting an algorithm...
