Join us on our 609th weekly Blogtalk podcast where we discuss all things Days of Our Lives and sometimes sports, depending on how our teams are doing! This week in Salem, Kate and Abe have continued to recruit members of the community to fill roles on & off screen for their new production of Body & Soul which has recently relocated & is preparing to launch production. They now have several on screen roles filled, the director, head writer, & PR director. Leo diagnoses his shrink as having DID but then finds out that he's been spending time with Hattie instead or Marlena. Pork rind sales are expected to shrink (no pun intended) upon this revelation. Crazy Connie may have claimed her next victim & Sarah Horton has yet to regain the feeling in her legs after her drunk mother in law recently accidentally mowed her down in the town square parking lot, the same MIL who is currently entrusted with her 1yo's care. What could go wrong? Now that we think of it, not sure if real life Salem is imitating art in Body & Soul or if it's the other way around!?

Designing Elections? Yes! Whitney Quesenbery and I talk about designing elections, designing in government, and the future of election design. We dive deep into the world of elections, and Whitney’s and the Center for Civic Design’s work to help election officials nationwide design better elections. Show Summary Whitney had two careers before she landed in civic design. She had a professional career in theatre for a number of years before a friend asked her to write a product manual. That led to a shift into writing, and she worked for a number of large organizations creating and documenting content. In 2000, Whitney ended up on a federal advisory committee writing voting system standards, which led her into civic design and to what she calls her “last great adventure” founding the Center for Civic Design. You may think that accessible designs are only for people with disabilities. Actually, accessible designs are for diverse groups, such as people who are limited to using low bandwidth, people who may not be fluent in the language, as well as people who are using a mobile phone to access the Internet. In this conversation with accessibility and usability specialists Sarah Horton and Whitney Quesenbery, they explain how all users win when we design for accessibility first. And how Universal Design is the path that provides the best access to digital products for the widest audience. Sarah is a consultant for strategic planning for websites and web applications. She also does accessibility and usability reviews. Sarah has written several books on topics from web design to accessibility for the web. Whitney brings user research insights to designing products where people matter. She has written two other books on user experience and is co-director of the non-profit Center for Civic Design, working with election officials on usability and design of ballots and other election materials. Shared workspace is all the rage with start-ups, artisans, and freelancers these days, but does it work for arts nonprofits? Artists Repertory Theatre is finding out. It has invited eight other theater-related organizations to cozy up in an experiment in cohabitation. They're calling it the Artshub, and they're hoping it might prove a model for future nonprofits. On any given day, there're plays opening, rehearsals rehearsing, scene shop saws buzzing, students singing, and pigeons making googly eyes.We sent three producers to spend an entire day at the building exploring everything that was happening, from the first person in to the last person to turn out the lights, and this behind-the-scenes documentary is the result. Host April Baer introduces the ArtsHub — along with our ArtsHub drinking game. 00:52 - Artists Rep artistic producer Shawn Lee is the first in most days. He circles the building looking for new graffiti and trash, and then heads in to deal with production notes from the previous evening's opening preview of "The Invisible Hand." 3:09 - Production director Brent Sullivan takes April down to the scene shop, where they're building the set for "The Price," and then into the Alder Stage, where they're hanging lights. (She also stopped in to learn about making breakable vases and blood splatters with prop master Natalie Heikkinen. Hear it here.) 6:22 - While machines fire in the belly of the building, producer Aaron Scott heads upstairs to the Artists Rep offices. Jerry Tischleder, the artistic director of the Risk/Reward Festival, plays air traffic control; pigeons soundtrack inner monologues; and managing director Sarah Horton squints and tries to figure out how to make it all work financially. 8:40 - In the lobby, curators of the Geezer Gallery are hanging artwork. Production assistant Phoebe Flanigan asks what exactly make a geezer, before heading down to "The Dungeon" with Portland Revels in search of a dragon. 11:20 - Host April Baer hangs out with Profile Theatre artistic director Adriana Baer (no relation). As the biggest tenant, Profile served as a lynchpin for the Artshub, putting on its shows between Artists Rep's shows, filling both theaters year round. And now Adriana is finding new ways to cross-pollinate: she's directing "The Price" for Artists Rep. 14:12 - On the other side of the building, a group of teenagers are singing fearlessly at the musical theater conservatory Staged. Being in the building means they're getting to see what it means to succeed in the theater. 16:02 - We head to one of the final rehearsals for "The Invisible Hand," which had its first preview the night before. The play is a tense economic thriller that has been four years in the making for director Allen Nause. Listen to his conversation on "Think Out Loud" with the Pulitzer-winning playwright, Ayad Akhtar, and lead actor Imran Sheikh. 17:55 - As "The Invisible Hand" actors warm up for the show (for resident artist John San Nicholas, that means rapping in a Pakistani dialect), the audience starts to crowd into the lobby and file into the theater. Then after the show, the production assistants reset the stage, and the janitor starts his circuit.
In this premiere episode of A Podcast for Everyone, Sarah Horton and Whitney Quesenbery speak with UIE's Adam Churchill about the book that inspired the podcast, and give a preview of what they will be talking about in upcoming episodes.
Sarah Horton Cockrell played a pivotal role in Dallas's early economic development. In 1872, she raised funds to open the first iron bridge over the Trinity River, thereby connecting Dallas to major roads south and west. By the time of her death in 1892, she owned almost a fourth of the city's downtown. She is now remembered as "Dallas's first capitalist."
At its best, the web is a model of efficiency, with a single document playing to multiple contexts. Adaptive design provides the basis for this flexibility, with documents that move gracefully between small and large screen and printed page, with multiple stops in between. For the web designer, designs that adapt are far more difficult to accomplish than fixed, controlled pages. But adaptive design is also liberating, for designers and users alike. Designers are relieved of the burden of trying to devise a single design that works for all users. Users are spared the frustration of trying to navigate environments that do not take into account their use context. This session will focus on the practice of adaptive design. We will begin with document design and how to create machine-friendly source documents. Next, we will discuss best practices for adaptive design, including page layouts that accommodate different window widths, functional elements that can be worked via the keyboard, and styling for print and mobile contexts. Finally, we will discuss the partnership between designer and user in an adaptive, user-controlled environment. Sarah Horton is Director of Web Strategy, Design, and Infrastructure at Dartmouth College. In this capacity, she provides overall strategic direction for the College’s web presence and leads the Web Services group, which provides design, development, and hosting services for the College. In her previous position as an instructional designer in Academic Computing, she promoted the use of information technologies to foster learning. Sarah is a writer and advocate for universal usability and user-centered design. She is co-author with Patrick Lynch of Web Style Guide: Basic Design Principles for Creating Web Sites, published by Yale University Press, which has sold over 120,000 copies and been translated into eight languages. Her second book, Web Teaching Guide: A Practical Approach to Creating Course Web Sites, also published by Yale University Press, won the American Association of Publishers award for the Best Book in Computer Science in 2000. Her most recent book, Access by Design: A Guide to Universal Usability for Web Designers, was published in July 2005 by Peachpit Press. Sarah regularly writes articles and gives presentations and workshops on web design with a focus on usability and accessibility. Patrick J. Lynch is the Director of Special Technology Projects in the Office of the ITS Director at Yale University's Information Technology Services. In his 35 years with Yale University he has been a medical illustrator, biomedical and scientific photographer, audiovisual producer, and for the past 20 years a designer of interactive multimedia teaching, training, and informational software and web sites. Pat has won over 30 national and international awards for his work, including the 2005 Pirelli Internetional Awards for Best Overall multimedia teaching site, and best site from higher education, the 1992 Best-in-Show Award from the Health Sciences Communications Association and a Gold Medal, Silver Medal and Award of Excellence in the international INVISION Multimedia Awards. He has authored over 100 professional papers, magazine articles, and book chapters, and published three books—A Field Guide to North American Wildlife, Web Style Guide, and Manual of Orinthology—with Yale University Press. He has been a consultant and invited speaker on web design and web communications issues to many universities, goverment agencies, corporations, and non-profits groups, and regularly does talks, workshops, and professonal papers in biocommuications, academic computing, medical illustration, biomedical visualization, and web publication.
