Drama-documentary by Sarah Woods, inspired by Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America, one of the most influential political texts ever written, transposed to the UK of today and featuring members of the British public. In 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville travelled to North America on a nine month trip that led him to conclude that democracy was unstoppable and would spread across Europe. His concerns about democracy - the dangers of self-interest and materialism; the tendencies towards mediocrity; the risk of populist, despotic leaders and the silencing of minorities - echo clearly into the present day. In this drama, set in today's UK, an elderly man checks himself out of a Preston hospital and hitchhikes south. He says his name's Alexis de Tocqueville and that he needs to find out what has happened to democracy. As he travels around the UK, he talks to ordinary people about their perceptions of the current state of democracy and the challenges it faces. Can democracy offer us the world - and the leaders - that we need? Tocqueville ..... Philippe Spall Erica ..... Catherine Ayers All other parts played by Kezrena James, Aaron Anthony, Karen Paullada and Charles Dale. Featuring voices of real people from across the UK. Written by Sarah Woods, assisted by Lil Woods Production co-ordinators, Eleri Sydney McAuliffe and Lindsay Rees Assistant Producer, Fay Lomas Technical Producers, Catherine Robinson and Nigel Lewis Directed by Emma Harding, BBC Audio Drama Wales Sarah Woods is an award-winning playwright and systems thinker who has written over 30 plays, series, adaptations and drama-documentaries for BBC Radio, including Borderland, which won the Tinniswood Award for Best Audio Drama at the 2018 BBC Audio Drama Awards.

She talks to Music Ally's Editor Joe Sparrow about what she calls “reverse globalisation” of the music industry: a situation where UK artists become confined to touring in the UK due to it becoming increasingly hard to tour abroad.Post-Brexit, touring the rest of Europe is now a complex affair, involving visas and carnets, and accompanying rising costs. As a result, some musicians have been looking to America - and are finding complications there too, with the US planning to raise touring visa fees for foreign acts by more than 250%. We spoke to Sarah about this “reverse globalisation” and she shared some data that shows where applicants to Help Musicians' services most need help around touring, and what the impacts will mean for artists as they seek to expand their audience at home and abroad.  Help Musicians: helpmusicians.org.uk Visa advice for touring artists: helpmusicians.org.uk/get-support/develop-as-a-musician/advice/visa-advice-service The Cure – “Disintegration” Jacqueline du Pre & Daniel Barenboim - Elgar Cello Concerto Plus: Peeling and eating bananas quickly ------

This powerful guide has helped entrepreneurs land features in Harvard Business Review, The Times, The Sunday Times, The Independent, Stylist, Red Magazine and more. Your newsworthy business begins now. Link: https://www.pitchtopress.com/ Here are the takeaways... There's an art to promoting yourself and becoming a credible expert. It should be fun, joyful, and playful and come from a place of curiosity and value. There is a skill set to telling the story in a way that makes it of interest to journalists. That's how you reach more people. This is something all entrepreneurs should learn to do to create storylines that are topical and relevant. It is so important to think about "how do I feel when I tell this story?" and "what parts of my story do I want to share?". You don't have to share every part of the story. You can choose which parts to share. A tip from Adela is to practice telling that story to someone you trust and see how you feel in 24 - 48 hours. Never tell a story completely fresh. It's best to tell a story after you've integrated it into your life and healed. Know the difference in vulnerability between the type of sharing that makes you relatable, and the kind of sharing that feels unsafe. You decide how much of your story you will share, and that comes with setting boundaries. Pitching is conversation. Lead with value, give information, and be helpful. When you promote yourself, you are being transparent about what you are doing. Unless you promote yourself, people will not know that you can help them. It's actually selfish to hold back from other people. Connecting with journalists gives them something to write about. You're helping them out when you share a story. It's mutually beneficial. Being targeted with your pitches, making sure you pitch to journalists who write about the topics you want to share will result in fewer rejections. Working in isolation is hard. Join a strong group that can help you create the stories. Work in community supporting each other, make it a fun collaborative adventure. Remember the adage, "to go fast go alone, to go far go together". Getting visible is a journey. There are billions of people on this planet. Someone wants to hear your story about your business. Sarah didn't say one word about it when she approached me so I just assume she had no idea. I brought that point up so she was happy to hear that great news!  (That's usual par for the course with me, everything just falls into place on its own..lol) I dug through a rabbit hole folks for 10 hours of somewhere in the ballpark of 60 profiles at least and honed in on the A-class talent of the BSquared roster. Her contribution to this great shift in consciousness begins with the leaders and strong hearts she works with. This is nothing less than our collective emancipation guiding us in the revolution we know is here. Beginnings… Sarah has been unravelling the realms of the cosmic being since childhood. She recognized in her 20s the ways in which she experienced this world, and who she is may never be fully understood. That's fine. Neither is electricity. For some time she worked in high corporate. Pitching stories about Viagra. (Seriously). Writing speeches for industry leaders. Learning the mechanics of deep expression. Actually…learning the mechanics of what deep expression can DO. Turning several pages – Sarah is now a global facilitator of consciousness working with the world's most creative igniters of a new unified and sustainable more fair economy. Miracles happen and small ideas become life-changing twists of fate. Big ideas have often become international enterprises. The seemingly impossible was made real in many an ambitious life. This works (she'll teach you how to do it). ************** Life Continuing Instagram: @lifecontinuingpodcast lifecontinuing.com Creator: Tania Berg Advisor: Amanda Cupido Music: Richard Feren Editor: Cathy Ord

Car insurance pre-dates broad distribution of cars. The first recorded policy was issued in 1897 to Gilbert Loomis of Ohio. Production of the Model T, regarded as the first affordable automobile that made vehicle travel available to the masses, was not introduced until nearly 10 years later. And just like the car, evolving from combustion-only to electric, self-driven to semi-autonomous in some cases, insurance has changed and innovated over the last 120 years, adding rate calculations, moving to digital data storage and adding additional services like roadside. However, the method for calculating insurance rates based predominantly on age, vehicle and mileage has been standard since 1937. An insurance startup, Root Insurance, was founded to innovate this model, defining rates on how you drive, not who you are. We sat down with Sarah Woods, Director of Product Management to learn more about Root and their roadside program.

The journalist and novelist, Tony Parsons, joins Richard Coles and Aasmah Mir. Tony was working on the night shift at Gordon's Gin Distillery when he was offered his first job as a journalist on the New Musical Express. When he wasn't hanging out with rock stars he was embedded with the Vice Squad at 27 Savile Row, West End Central, where the roots of his crime character, DC Max Wolfe, first began. Saturday Live listener, Hilary Nicoll, talks about The Museum of Dad. Featuring a music case, a trombone, old jazz 78s, and a chair made of steel tube and leather, it's a blog in remembrance of her architect father, who is now living in a nursing home with Alzheimer's. Ex-Blue Peter presenter, Janet Ellis, has long been fascinated by the lives of people who were here before us, so much so that she has developed a life-long passion for looking around graveyards. She visits the cemetery at St Nicholas' Church in Chiswick, with Dan Parker. Janet describes Fern Hill by Dylan Thomas, as a possible epitaph. Sarah Woods describes her travels to Central and South America in an eight year quest to see the Harpy Eagle in the wild. She explains why helping a teenage girl in labour, and seeing the Harpy Eagle up close, were life-changing experiences. Jonathan Moore is an ex-punk who became an opera director. Art and spirituality are his vocation - as shown in his current play about Ignatius of Loyola. And the Inheritance Tracks of Dom Joly. He chooses America by Simon and Garfunkel and In a Room by The House of Love. The Slaughter Man by Tony Parsons is published by Century. On a Wing and a Prayer, by Sarah Woods, is published by Bloomsbury. Janet Ellis' first novel, The Butcher's Hook, is scheduled for publication in February 2016. Inigo, written and directed by Jonathan Moore, runs at the Pleasance in north London until 13 June, 2015. The exhibition Peter Wilkins - Great British Music from the 1960s - 2010s, is at Dray Walk Gallery, London E1 6QL until 1 June, 2015.
