Syria's Alawite ethnic minority consider March 7 the start of a genocidal campaign. To the Sunni majority, it marked operations to quash a coup. While regaining trust won't be easy, preventing more violence will be a key test for the new Syria. Also: today's stories, including whether Democrats can make inroads in Florida amidst increasing polarization; a look at mass protests and mounting arrests in Turkey's main cities after the arrest of Istanbul's Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, an opposition leader and a key rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan; and how one volcanic island may save an at-risk banana crop. In this episode of The President's Daily Brief: First, one of the top three U.S. leaders of the violent Salvadoran MS-13 gang has been arrested in a major immigration operation in Virginia. The news comes as the Trump administration orders the Pentagon to train their spy satellites on the U.S.-Mexico border to help crack down on cartel operations. Later in the show, new reports are emerging regarding the recent slaughter of members of the Alawite community in Syria, as the country grapples with the worst sectarian violence since the fall of Bashar al-Assad. Plus, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un is back to stirring the pot on the Korean peninsula, recently overseeing the testing of newly developed AI-powered suicide drones. In our 'Back of the Brief' segment, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky raises eyebrows with a shocking prediction, claiming Vladimir Putin's health is ailing and the Russian strongman will soon die. In a nation scarred by years of civil war, the rapid collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024 marked a pivotal turning point. The Islamist terrorist group, HTS - once linked to Al-Qaeda - led a swift eleven-day offensive that toppled the government seizing key cities, including Damascus. However, this power shift unleashed a wave of sectarian violence with reports indicating that over 1,000 people have been killed in recent clashes, predominantly from the Alawite minority. Christian communities, too, face heightened threats under the new liberated Syria, with incidents of violence and kidnapping causing widespread fear.As HTS consolidates its control, the nation teeters on the brink with international observers expressing deep concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis and the uncertain future of Syria. Independent journalist Collin Mayfield was in Lebanon with Hezbollah when he learned of the Assad regime's collapse. Collin grabbed his gear and crossed into Syria just as HTS seized control.Mr. Mayfield witnessed and recorded Syria during these initial chaotic days. He visited the Damascus Public Hospital and saw corpses with evidence of severe torture, presumably recovered from Sednaya Prison. He encountered survivors from Sednaya Prison at the Ibn Sina Psychiatric Hospital who were severely traumatized. And of course, he visited Sednaya Prison, notoriously known as the “human slaughterhouse,” where he encountered evidence of extensive torture, extreme abuse, and female birth control pills. Collin even documented the Far' Falastin Prison, notorious for sexual violence against women.Collin, thank you for taking the time to share your far-ranging Syrian experience, from Captagon drug factories to encounters with ISIS and HTS Militia at Assad's Presidential Palace. This interview is truly historic. Be sure to watch the video version on YouTube to see Collin's brutally stunning photographs.Order Marc's new book, "Some Future Day: How AI Is Going to Change Everything"Sign up for the Some Future Day Newsletter here: https://marcbeckman.substack.com/Episode Links:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/collin_mayfield/Threads: https://www.threads.net/@collin_mayfieldLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/collin-mayfield-b4487a1b0To join the conversation, follow Marc Beckman here: YoutubeLinkedInTwitterInstagramTikTok

It's Friday, March 21st, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus 1,300 people killed in Syria last week More than 1,300 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the past week in Syria, reports Open Doors. The BBC reported that a UK-based monitor has identified that “830 civilians were killed in ‘massacres' targeting Alawites on the west coast on Friday and Saturday.” Based in the Middle East, the Alawites are a sect of Islam that venerates a Muslim imam known as Ali. Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, known for his brutal dictatorship, is an Alawite himself, as was his father. The recent violence began with pro-Assad forces who attacked soldiers associated with the new government of Syria. Isaiah 59:7 says, “Their feet rush into sin; they are swift to shed innocent blood. They pursue evil schemes; acts of violence mark their ways.” Although the violence doesn't seem to be targeting Syrian Christians, followers of Jesus are scared in the midst of the violence. That's why on Sunday, March 9, many churches did not hold their Sunday services. Trump dismantles Department of Education President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to start dismantling the Department of Education. TRUMP: “Today we take a very historic action that was 45 years in the making. In a few moments, I will sign an Executive Order to begin eliminating the Federal Department of Education once and for all. (applause) Everybody knows it's right.” Immediately after the signing, Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, the chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, said in a post on X that he will “submit legislation” to accomplish Trump's goal of shutting down the Department of Education “as soon as possible.” Attorney General Pam Bondi investigating Tesla attacks as terrorism On Tuesday morning, five Tesla vehicles were set on fire in Las Vegas with Molotov cocktails and shot with a gun at a Tesla Collision Center. That was the tenth such attack on Teslas since Trump's inauguration on January 20th, reports Fox News. The Left has also violently targeted Teslas or Tesla dealerships in Salem, Oregon, Loveland, Colorado, Owings Mills, Maryland, Littleton, Massachusetts, Tigard, Oregon, North Charlston, South Carolina, Seattle, Washington, Dedham, Massachusetts, and Kansas City, Missouri. Attorney General Pam Bondi called the recent spate of arson attacks and vandalism against Tesla vehicles "nothing short of domestic terrorism" and promised harsh punishments for perpetrators if they are caught, reports ABC News. There's been a clear uptick in attacks on Teslas and Tesla dealerships since President Donald Trump took office and empowered Elon Musk to oversee a new Department of Government Efficiency that's slashing government spending. Appearing on Fox News, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was direct. LEAVITT: “President Trump condemns this violence. He is determined to restore law and order in our country, and he will ensure that the harshest penalties are pursued for those who are engaging in this vicious violence that we have seen targeted at this American company, Tesla, dealerships, Tesla employees and also innocent Americans who have chosen to drive these vehicles, many of them, ironically, are likely Democrats. “There is a major double standard here. The Democrats used to be the greatest cheerleaders for electric vehicles and for Tesla, the company, until Elon Musk decided to support and vote for Donald Trump. “So, the Trump Derangement Syndrome from the Left is on true display with these attacks. It is getting dangerous, and the White House wholeheartedly condemns it, and we applaud Attorney General Pam Bondi for investigating these acts as domestic terrorism, because that is what they are.” Will Dr. Oz support abortion and transgenderism now? Senate confirmation proceedings are underway for Dr. Mehmet Oz, President Donald Trump's choice for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services administrator. Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri is seeking answers about the TV personality's past liberal stances on abortion and transgender issues, reports LifeSiteNews.com. As recently as 2019, Oz had attacked abortion bans because he disputed that the heartbeat begins at six weeks gestation despite scientific proof. Appearing on The Breakfast Club radio show, Oz also indicated that fetal viability was the only reasonable benchmark for gestational protection. OZ: “If the child was viable outside the womb, then you don't want to kill that child. If the child was not going to be able to survive outside the mom, then the mom runs the show. This is a hard issue for everybody. I get it. But just being logical about it, if you think that the moment of conception, you've got a life, then why would you even wait six weeks?” Later, Dr. Oz made this remark. OZ: “If someone, deep in their heart, feels that the moment of conception is a human life, and they just can't deal with that life being harmed, they got to be heard. They can't get ignored. But that doesn't mean that's what the rule of the land is.” Plus, in 2010, Oz emerged as a critical, early backer of “transitioning” gender-confused minors, running an hour-long special about “transgender children” that promoted a 15-year-old girl who had undergone a double mastectomy at age 14 and an eight-year-old boy being raised as a girl named “Josie.” Over the course of his 2022 Senatorial campaign, Oz backtracked on both issues, declaring himself “100% Pro-Life” and denying that he supported transitioning minors, claiming that his hosting of the opposite position did not constitute endorsement. Steve Lawson: “I have sinned grievously.” And finally, former Pastor Steven Lawson, age 73, a prominent figure in the Reformed/Calvinist movement, has acknowledged that he has “sinned grievously,” speaking out for the first time about the September 20th scandal that removed him from ministry, reports The Christian Post. Once a teaching fellow at Ligonier Ministries and the dean of Doctor of Ministry Studies at The Master's Seminary, Lawson, a married man, allegedly had a 5-year affair with a woman in her late 20s. In a series of now-deleted X posts, Phil Johnson, Director of Grace to You with John MacArthur, said last September that Lawson only informed the elders at Trinity Bible Church after "the girl's father had confronted Steve and threatened exposure. This was not a noble confession.” In an X post this past Wednesday, Lawson wrote: “I have sinned grievously against the Lord, against my wife, my family, and against countless numbers of you by having a sinful relationship with a woman not my wife. I am deeply broken that I have betrayed and deceived my wife, devastated my children, brought shame to the name of Christ, reproach upon His church, and harm to many ministries.” Lawson added, “I have been undergoing extensive counseling for the last five months to face the hard questions I need to address. I have dealt with sin issues that have been painfully exposed in my heart. I have submitted myself in weekly accountability to two pastors and to the elders of a local congregation, who have shepherded my soul.” 1 Timothy 3:1-2 says, “Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Friday, March 21st, in the year of our Lord 2025. Just months after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad, Syria has been rocked by an eruption of violence. Coastal towns have turned into killing fields, with forces aligned with the government accused of massacring hundreds of civilians from religious minorities. The Syrian online space is also littered with misinformation - part of an information war that is inciting sectarian fear and deepening divisions, in a country still raw from years of civil war and decades under a brutal regime. Lead contributors: Zaina Erhaim – Journalist Ahmad Primo – Founder, Verify Syria Ola Suliman – Campaigns lead, The Syria Campaign Rim Turkmani – Syria research programme director, LSE On our radar: The Trump White House is waging an unprecedented crackdown on pro-Palestine activism on university campuses. Meenakshi Ravi reports on Mahmoud Khalil - a Columbia graduate and, in theory, permanent US resident, who now faces deportation. ICE's PR blitz: Immigration raids as entertainment In Trump's America, immigration enforcement isn't just policy - it's a spectacle. With ICE raids increasingly staged for the cameras, and journalists given front-row access to capture dramatic arrests, is it law and order or a made-for-TV performance? The Listening Post's Tariq Nafi explores the media's role in shaping the immigration debate. Featuring: Patrick Bet-David – Host, PBD podcast Michelle Garcia – Journalist and author Abraham Paulos – Deputy director, Black Alliance for Just Immigration

The overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in Syria has not led to stability in the war-torn nation. In fact, death squads affiliated with the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) that now rules over much of Syria have been blamed for more than 1,000 killings in the past week, most of them civilian members of the Alawite minority of deposed president Bashar al-Assad. Syrian Christians fear they will be the next group targeted by the HTS security forces. Jimmy and renowned public policy analyst Jeffrey Sachs discuss the situation on the ground in Syria and this predictable outcome of Assad's ouster by radical Islamists backed by the CIA. Plus segments on the extermination of democracy in Romania, NIH nominee Dr. Jay Bhattacharya's controversial senate confirmation hearing and the background of new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Also featuring Mike MacRae, Kurt Metzger and Stef Zamorano. And a phone call from JD Vance!
There is much that is patently false about the rhetoric regarding the savagery in Syria. But it should not distract Israel from the real game: the geopolitical problem is the Iranian attempt to use the Alawite minority in order to regain a foothold in Syria. And one cannot begin to make sense of the chaos without taking account of this development. Also in this episode: former heads of Shin Bet use mafia-style threats to reveal secrets about the Netanyahu family if the prime minister dares to fire the sitting head of Shin Bet, Ronnen Bar.
Dan is sick, but does he sound sick or sexy? A lot is happening in Syria, as HTS kills minority populations and the kurds agree to play nice with Al-julani. With hundreds dead after days of fighting between armed supporters of former leader Bashar al-Assad and government forces, the worst violence since al-Assad's fall, Syrians are grappling with how to move forward. On this edition of Parallax Views, Matthew Petti, an assistant editor at Reason magazine whose beat is national security issues, returns to the program to discuss his recent articles "Bipartisan war hawks go after Trump defense pick Elbridge Colby", "Is Trump borrowing Biden's ‘bear hug' approach to Israel?", and "Who is the Palestinian Columbia student detained for his protest activity?". We'll also discuss the situation in Syria, specifically the uprising and massacre of Alawite civilians in the past week. In regards to Syria, we'll dissect the information war shell game that's currently taking place and how various actors including Israel, Russia, Iran, Turkey, and the Arab Gulf States are all pushing certain narratives in relation to Syria's transitional government led by Ahmed al-Sharaa (formerly Abu Mohammad al-Julani). In the first portion of our conversation, we look at the confirmation hearing of Elbridge Colby, who has been nominated by President Donald Trump to be his Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. Although Colby belongs to the world of defense intellectuals and is not a dove by any stretch, some of his views have a pro-restraint bent that have come under fire from both Republicans and Democrats. Republican Senator Tom Cotton, in particular, appears to take issue with Colby, specifically Colby's views on the Middle East (Colby wants to wind down U.S. involvement in the region), and is alleged by a number of Trump allies to have been behind a recent whisper campaign against Colby. We'll examine the realist camp of figures who have been given positions within the Trump administration thus far and JD Vance and Marco Rubio's allusions to realist foreign policy views since Trump's election. We'll also discuss how the other side of the coin when it comes to this embrace of realism by elements of the Trump administration and MAGA. Namely, the increasing talk of consolidating U.S. power in its geographic sphere of influence (ie: all the talk of making Canada the "51st State"). Petti will also go over Colby's hawkish views on China, specifically in relation to Taiwan, and how his views have changed over the years. In the latter portion of the conversation, we'll discuss Petti's notion that Trump's may well be employing the "bear hug" strategy with Israel that many claimed Biden was using during his administration in light of the Gaza War. Petti makes the case that Biden did not actually apply the bear hug strategy, but that Trump may actually be using it. On one hand, Trump is frequently proclaiming his pro-Israel credentials for domestic consumption (ie: the targeting of Gaza protesters as "pro-Hamas" sympathizer or illegal "agitators"; saying he completely wants to eradicate Hamas). On the other hand, the Trump administration just held secretive talks with Hamas that were brought ot the public by Axios journalist Barak Ravid. Ravid, who has many sources within the Israeli national security state, broke the news and it seems reasonably to say Israeli security sources wanted the story to come out even if Trump didn't want that to happen. What are the implications of this? We'll delve into that in-depth. Afterwards we will turn our attention to detainment of Mahmoud Khalil, a lead negotiator for pro-Palestinian protest camp at Columbia University. The detainment has garnered massive media attention with Khalil currently being held at an ICE detainment center. Turns out Khalil is not in the U.S. on a student visa. He has a green card. Although the Department of Homeland Security argues that Khalil's " activities aligned to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization" he has not been charged with a crime and is a permanent legal resident of the U.S. The case is likely to raise a lot of debate about what constitutes support for a terrorist organization, specifically what constitutes material support and where the lines between 1st amendment rights and said support are drawn. All that and more on this edition of Parallax Views!

But as we learn from an incident in a different Alawite community, this isn't the first episode of violence against the sect.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

In this episode, Alex talks about three days of sectarian violence in Syria that have led to over 1,300 people being killed. Many of these tragedies seem to be related to revenge killings of the Alawite population that was supporting Assad. Alex then talks about fears of a recession as the stock market had another bad day. He wonders why Trump seems to have accepted that an economic crisis is coming. Alex later talks about DOGE embracing an AI model to do the work of the federal employees that have been fired. He worries that this could be a bad idea since the Trump Administration has deregulated AI.
There has been bloody violence in Syria for days between security forces and fighters loyal to the ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad. Approximately a thousand people are estimated to have been killed in Syria's coastal region after violence that followed an attack on government forces last week. Since then, members of Syria's Alawite community have been attacked and killed. Also, economist and politician Mark Carney is named Canada's new prime minister. Canada's most populous province has imposed a twenty-five percent surcharge on electricity exports to the United States in response to tariffs imposed by Washington. The premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, said he would be prepared to cut off power supplies altogether unless the US changed course. He said the surcharge would raise a total of up to four hundred thousand dollars a day from the states of New York, Michigan and Minnesota. On Sunday, Canada's next Prime Minister, Mark Carney, said the national government was right to retaliate against US tariffs. He said Canada would maintain its own duties on US goods until the Americans showed some respect. We hear from Yasir Naqvi, from Mr Carney's Liberal Party. Also in the programme: Thousands of people are reported to have fled Syria after violent attacks on the minority Alawite community; and as Ukraine peace negotiations begin in Saudi Arabia, we'll hear from a former Prime Minister of Russia who's now a Putin critic.(File Photo: Ontario Premier Doug Ford responds to US President Donald Trump's new 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada. //The Wire//1900Z March 10, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: CHAOS CONTINUES IN SYRIA. MAJOR SHIP COLLISION IN NORTH SEA.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-North Sea: Early this morning a serious vessel collision was reported between two large cargo vessels. The M/V STENA IMMACULATE was lying at anchor when she was struck by the M/V SOLONG this morning. The collision resulted in a large and uncontrolled fire, which caused the crews of both vessels to abandon ship. Various Coast Guard forces carried out large-scale rescue operations throughout the day, recovering approximately 32x mariners from their liferafts by this afternoon.AC: At the moment, the status of the recovered crew members is unknown. It also isn't clear as to if either vessel is sinking, due to the fires preventing an assessment of watertight integrity. The STENA IMMACULATE is a US-flagged tanker vessel that was in these waters reportedly to resupply a US Navy vessel with aviation fuel. Per AIS ship tracking data, the SOLONG was very likely at fault, directly colliding with the STENA's port side directly amidships, without deviating from course or attempting to slow down. Consequently, this incident will very likely be subject to a thorough investigation to determine if this collision was intentional.Syria: The violence of the past few days has greatly expanded, and now encompasses many different factions. Most of the fighting has been reported in the northwestern regions of Syria, from Latakia to Baniyas.-HomeFront-USA: This morning Twitter/X suffered a large scale outage. Elon Musk stated that the reason for the outage was related to a large-scale cyberattack.Washington: Attacks on Tesla vehicle dealerships continue with assailants conducting an arson attack in Seattle. Overnight, several Tesla vehicles were set on fire in a storage lot on the corner of 2nd Ave and Spokane Street.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: At the moment it is too soon to tell if a civil war has begun in Syria, however the violence over the past week has been exceptionally disturbing. What originally began as retaliatory massacres of former members of the Assad regime, has transitioned into what most would consider to be ethnic cleansing operations. Christians have been a primary target for many groups, which have formed killing squads specifically with the goal of targeting Christian communities. Other (comparatively moderate) Muslim factions have also been targeted, with the Alawite ethnic group continually suffering massacres as well.Tragically, Syria is not unfamiliar with this development, as the long and weary Syrian Civil War of recent memory resulted in similar levels of factional violence. However, in this case, there is no somewhat stable regime to exert some sort of control over some parts of the nation. In short, those who thought Assad was a madman have not met Mohammad al-Julani, Syria's new leader who climbed to notoriety not via family aristocracy...but by hopping from militant group to militant group (and gaining warlord status along the way).Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground//END REPORT//

Three months on, could Syria slide back into civil war? In the Alawite bastion of ousted president Bashar al-Assad, the bloodiest week in years with attacks and revenge killings of civilians that the new masters of Damascus are scrambling to contain. Why did the Mediterranean coast region erupt? What triggered it? And what's the next move by new strongman Ahmed al-Sharaa? The jihadist militia leader who's traded in his fatigues for a suit and promised the outside world justice and respect for minority rights. Enough for the West to begin a desperately-needed easing of sanctions. Have the likes of the European Union moved too slowly or too fast? And how will al-Sharaa navigate between his own alliance of forces that include Turkey-backed militias which contributed to the overthrow of Assad but could pose a threat to the central authority in Damascus, the US-backed Kurds who want federalism, and the Russians who want to keep their Mediterranean bases? Not to mention Israel, which rejected overtures of détente and for the moment occupies more land in the Golan HeightsProduced by François Picard, Rebecca Gnignati, Elisa Amiri, Ilayda Habip.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military reporter Emanuel Fabian joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's Daily Briefing. Tomorrow marks day 50 of the ceasefire agreement. Fabian explains where the IDF is currently operating in the Gaza Strip and how quickly it could reassemble into war footing. A Syria war monitor reported on Saturday that over 745 civilians from the Alawite minority had been killed in recent days by security forces and their allies, as authorities clash with militants loyal to the former government of Bashar al-Assad. Coincidentally or not, the IDF said troops captured and destroyed numerous weapons during missions in southern Syria. Is this publication of the IDF's Syria mission a message to the new government there? Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews were escorted by the military on Friday to the traditionally considered burial place of a Babylonian scholar on the Lebanon border, after weeks of illegal attempts to reach the site. Later on Friday, the IDF carried out airstrikes in southern Lebanon, saying it targeted Hezbollah military sites. We learn about the IDF's current operations in Lebanon during the ceasefire. The Israel Defense Force’s chief spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, is to end his role in the coming weeks and retire from the military, the IDF announced on Friday. Many have seen this step as a de facto dismissal, as Hagari was not given a promotion for his work as IDF spokesman during the war. Fabian weighs in. Marking International Women's Day, Fabian and Borschel-Dan have a brief conversation about the role of women in IDF leadership. As women are slowly rising in the ranks in combat roles, could we see a female chief of staff in the next 20 years? Please see today's ongoing liveblog for more updates. //The Wire//2300Z March 7, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: GERMANY BEGINS REARMAMENT CAMPAIGN ALONG WITH POLAND. FACTIONAL VIOLENCE ESCALATES IN SYRIA.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Europe: Rearmament campaigns have intensified over the past few days among most Western-oriented nations. Germany has announced plans to double their defense budget, raising their defense cost to roughly €100 billion per year. This is in addition to a €500 billion investment in their infrastructure. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the implementation of a nationwide training program to prepare all adult males in the country for war.AC: As this announcement was rather surprising, many questions remain on what PM Tusk is planning to implement. At the moment this doesn't appear to be a traditional military draft or general mobilization, but a mandatory training plan/curriculum that all adult males of Polish nationality will be required to complete. Tusk also announced that he plans to more than double the size of the standing Polish military, from 200,000 to 500,000.Syria: Following the fall of the Assad regime a few weeks ago, the establishment of a new regime by HTS has resulted in the situation deteriorating further. Groups of HTS militants have descended into engaging in random violence, often times with no clear end goal other than the murder of their perceived enemies.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: In Syria, the situation remains fairly complicated. However, right now the extreme levels of violence can mostly be summed up as the new HTS regime eradicating their enemies or anyone that challenges their rule. Some anti-HTS social media accounts have indicated that the Alawite community is being ethnically cleansed from Syria, with much evidence supporting the mass execution of primarily Alawite communities. However, as usual in the Middle East, much investigative effort will be required to verify the details as claimed on social media. What is abundantly clear, however, is that many people are being systemically murdered en masse by the HTS regime in Syria, mostly in the form of mob violence which is becoming increasingly more organized and deliberate.Other points of consideration are the steadily-increasing border incursions from neighboring nations. As a reminder, both Israel and Turkey openly invaded Syria during the collapse of the Assad regime (taking advantage of the chaos of the HTS advance). Though details are impossible to verify with any veracity, some data (from Israeli sources) suggest that the IDF has consolidated a substantial border expansion into Syria, which in some cases may be dozens of miles. Likewise, in the north the Turkish incursion continues. However, far less information is available to determine exactly how much of Syria that Turkey has carved out for themselves (This is also complicated by Turkey's long history of creating a buffer zone in the north, which was somewhat agreed upon when Assad was in power) However, in response to both incursions, HTS has done nothing at all. This is probably out of fear of poking the bear too much. However, as time goes on (and the incursions into Syria continue), this dynamic will be interesting to observe.Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground//END REPORT//
Syrian security forces are reported to have carried out a mass execution of fifty-two people of the Alawite minority in the coastal province of Latakia. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says activists have released footage showing dozens of bodies in civilian clothing piled in the yard of a house. The incident follows clashes in the province between government forces and supporters of the former president Bashar al-Assad, which left more than seventy people dead. We speak to a local resident in Latakia. Also in the programme: Russia targets Ukraine's energy infrastructure in a missile and drone attack overnight; and Lady Gaga on her new album and the long, hard road to get there. In Episode 268 of the CounterVortex podcast, Bill Weinberg examines the continued fighting in Syria since the fall of the Bashar Assad dictatorship in December. The recent outburst of violence in the Alawite heartland on the Mediterranean coast made headlines, but this week also saw anti-regime protests by Druze in Syria's south. And fighting has never stopped between forces aligned with the new transition government and those of the Kurdish autonomous zone in the northeast. The situation is complicated by continuing military adventures on Syrian territory by foreign powers—Israel, Turkey, Russia and the US. Will Syrians be able to overcome these challenges and forge a democratic and multicultural order, in repudiation of sectarianism, ethno-nationalism and Great Power intrigues?
