Ionatan and Ravi discuss Ionatan's weekend at Anime NYC 2024! They cover panels for 'Dandadan' with Kensuke Ushio and 'Haikyu!!' as well as a screening of 'Macross Plus' with Shoji Kawamori. Then, they have a broader conversation about what they look forward to most when attending anime conventions and plans for future live podcast appearances.
And here we are, running down the major bits and pieces from Anime Expo once again, all while the industry is threatened more now than ever in recent memory of suffering from a bursting bubble. It's best to enjoy things while we still can, but that does include plenty of upcoming projects like... more Fire Force and Blue Exorcist... but there's more TRIGUN and Panty & Stocking coming so it all balances out in the end. And that's not withstanding the folks from RWBY getting a new place of employment at Viz Media, the newest arc of One Piece getting ready for its dub premiere and the long-awaited finish line of "simuldub" inching closer and closer, and even a new film project from Shoji Kawamori in the works as well, along with plenty more to dive into and discuss. There's a lot to get to as we're in the heat of convention season, so for this "landmark" 175th episode, we're... going to do the same as usual. Except it's molten hot outside, so that's what makes this a bit more special. I think. A little bit of FYI for those who are curious: most shows we do are initially recorded anywhere from 2-3 hours in one call, though sometimes it can be a little longer than 3 hours, while the editing process can take anywhere from 6 to 10 hours to scroll through everything and make the necessary cuts and edits in several editing sessions. So if anyone's wondering why these shows take a while to come out, that's why. It's a one-man editing operation on a MacBook Pro, at the end of the day. We'll be back to talk SDCC and Otakon very soon. ntro - happy 175th, the heat is still unbearable 4:04 - pre/post-AX news items 57:15 - Anime Expo 2024: signs of an unstable industry 1:04:12 - the BIG announcement(s): BLUE BOX + NETFLIX 1:09:55 - Day 1 1:47:50 - Day 2 2:28:58 - Day 3 4:04 - Demon Slayer going back to the theaters 15:12 - the new Rose of Versailles film is a MAPPA production 20:37 - Magic Knight Rayearth 30th anniversary anime project announced 24:06 - Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha 20th anniversary movies re-edit announced 26:36 - Kisemonogatari compilation film in theaters in August 29:13 - Kadokawa acquires Doga Kobo 35:04 - Science SARU producing SANDA series from BEASTARS creator 37:10 - Crunchyroll fixes review bombing by disabling EVERY comment section 42:49 - THAT scene in Rent-a-Girlfriend will soon be upon us 46:05 - coming to SDCC: Adult Swim vs. AEW 48:29 - some Toonami updates: Sailor Moon and… something else 55:16 - BOCCHI THE CASSETTE TAPE 56:39 - late from Japan Expo: DEVILMAN CRYBABY BLU-RAY IS COMING AX Day 1: 1:09:55 - TRIGUN STARGAZE 1:13:01 - NEW Panty & Stocking 1:15:12 - Witch Hat Atelier 1:22:15 - Garden of Remembrance 1:24:11 - Batman Ninja sequel film 1:26:03 - Shoji Kawamori directing a new original film 1:27:01 - Kodansha USA 1:44:05 - BEASTARS season 4 1:45:21 - Grotesque AX Day 2: 1:47:50 - Viz Media acquires RWBY 1:54:53 - J-Novel Club 2:06:53 - Yen Press 2:20:27 - DENPA/Kuma 2:24:17 - Bleach: Rebirth of Souls 2:27:42 - One Piece Egghead Arc dub 2:28:58 - Tokyopop still sucks 2:30:09 - Uzumaki dub cast 2:32:07 - Special Kid Factory 2:33:37 - Bleach: TYBW 2:37:03 - MHA: You're Next release details 2:42:50 - new Blue Exorcist and Black Butler seasons 2:43:38 - Crunchyroll 2:51:43 - AX Cinema Nights Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ Where to find us: Alex – @AuraOfAzure, https://xandersmachinations.wordpress.com Andrew – @MangaMan9000, youtube.com/DubTalk Jet – @Divinenega, https://thenerdyabyss.wordpress.com As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, and follow @SurrealReso for more updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.

They say "don't start with a showstopper," yet in the world of transforming mecha, the designers of Super Dimension Fortress Macross did exactly that. The Valkyrie set off a trend of mecha that can transform into planes, but nearly all the designs it inspired are inferior to this perfect, classic original by Kazutaka Miyatake and Shoji Kawamori. Then again, maybe it was only a showstopper for other designers- someday we might get to talk about the mecha from future Macross series, which are no slouches themselves. http://www.decultureshock.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/MSP_EP122.mp3 The (first?) Flying Dog Festival included many moments one wouldn't normally expect at an event supposedly held to celebrate 10 years of the Flying Dog record label. Like Kouichi "Spike" Yamadera barking on stage, or 13,000 people roaring to video's of Gunbuster, or name dropping the Bahamut from Megazone 23, or Shoji Kawamori giving a short lecture to a packed sports stadium on the history of Macross. On the other hand, much of what fans were expecting didn't necessarily happen as planned, with Yoko Kanno pulling out of the event on hours before the doors opened due to a bad bout of influenza. So what happened? How did things go down? Join us this episode to find out! Photo courtesy of entertainmentstation.jp http://www.decultureshock.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/MSP_119.mp3 In case you’re wondering, the title of this episode refers to the series of Macross nooks we found while visiting Macross The Art (pictured above). Similarly, this episode is a series of reports and discoveries the likes of which have never been covered by a single podcast ever before! We visit Macross the Art, uncover long-lost VF-0 lineart, hear a live audio commentary by Shoji Kawamori himself and learn all about the making of the notorious SDFM episode “Phantasm”. But that’s just the beginning! We then meet conductor Kenichi Shimura and experience Yoko Kanno’s BGM work on Macross Frontier performed by a full orchestra. After that, it’s time to talk to the scenario writer of Macross, Kenichi Matsuzaki about the Supervision Army and hear mechanical designer Kazutaka Miyatake discuss his new personal best work. It’s more deculture than ever before, so throw on some headphones, kickback, and enjoy. These shots were instrumental in the making of "Phantasm". The view from the Conductor's podium.
