Looking ahead to next week's BoJ monetary policy meeting, Fujita-san joins us to share her views of what to expect including the timing of QT, the rate hiking trajectory, terminal rates, and the inflation outlook. Yamawaki-san explains what's been driving the move up in JGB yield post NIRP. With regard to the upcoming MPM, we see some upside for yields from here as the market is underpricing rate hikes relative to our view, and demand from Japanese lifers is blunted as they await better yield levels. From 1956 through 1966, during which time he moved from London to Tokyo to New York, Ivan was married to the ballerina Ogawa Ayako, known in the society papers—by analogy with Jackie (Kennedy)—as Yakkie. In the realm of ballet, where other important Cold War battles were fought such as securing the defection of the Tatar dancer Rudolf Nureyev from the Soviet Union, Ayako became one of the first Japanese to work at the highest levels, then returned to Japan to spread her knowledge to a new generation here. Ultimately she played her part in proving Japan's ‘eligibility' for the honorary white status it ‘achieved' in the postwar, as well as the supposedly unlimited translation powers of Anglo-American capitalism. This might be the most exciting episode yet! We're watching medical history unfold all the way from Japan. Are we on the path to having a non-hormonal therapy for halting the progression of and potentially reversing endometriosis? We are so honored to be joined by Dr. Ayako Nishimoto-Kakiuchi from Chugai Pharmaceuticals, which is the team behind this research. Dr. Ayako introduces us to the anti-IL-8 recycling antibody developed by the Chugai team called AMY109.As with all clinical trials, there are hurdles and timelines, but we're grateful for research being done to find a possible solution for endometriosis patients.Important disclaimer: Right now, the absolute gold standard for treating endometriosis is excision surgery by a well-trained, experienced endometriosis surgeon. Excision has brought many endo sufferers relief — but it is a highly complex surgery, invasive, and is hard to come by. There are few excision surgeons that specialize in treating endometriosis. It requires a multi-disciplinary team when the disease has spread outside the pelvis, and requires extensive experience and training that goes beyond the education received in med + surgical school.Alternative, safe treatments that don't involve hormonal suppression or minimally invasive surgery would be a huge advancement.During this episode, we dive into what role IL-8 plays in the progression of endometriosis, how AMY109 can inhibit it, what other conditions AMY109 could be effective for, and what current data from clinical trials look like. Thank you to everyone working hard at Chugai to create a better future for uterinekind! We're all cheering you on!Lastly, we end on a high note full of love! Congrats to Mr. and Mrs. Pickles!

Hey Friends,We're so glad you are here for this episode. We sat down to chat with our friend and neighbour Ayako Gallagher. Ayako is an incredibly strong woman who has endured one of the most difficult things anyone could face. She lost her baby just months before she was due. While this reality is much more common than many of us may realize, Ayako's story unfolded in the midst of the Pandemic which meant she was forced to give birth to her daughter in isolation. We were deeply moved, and very grateful that Ayako courageously shared her story with us, and further more, she shares about how she began to face her grief, and chose to be a voice for her daughter Emiko, and a voice for the many women and families who have experienced a similar reality.Ayako is a community organizer, a humanitarian, an advocate, and voice for people to share and experience the process of grieving in order to help pick up the pieces of their lives after loss. Her voice is so important, and we both learned a great deal from this conversation. We need people like Ayako in our lives. People who are brave, bold, and willing to have the conversations we typically avoid for reasons that don't measure up. We are very thankful to add her episode to our catalogue, and we know you will be better for listening.Enjoy,Z&D** Disclaimer: this episode includes topics that may be sensitive for some listeners including grief, miscarriage and loss of a child.Episode Resources:Ayako: Instagram Mamas Matter Here: Instagram Hosted on Acast. A lot of the interview material from our episodes here at Sake on Air winds up on the cutting room floor, but some of it is just too good to let go to waste. With our Okawari series, we raise our glass for a second round of information and insight from our past guest interviews and serendipitous encounters that we just didn't get enough of the first time around. This week's Okawari welcomes back three very special guests, each touching upon topics that took place as part of our previous discussions that were equally as fascinating as the original theme of their respective shows, however because the topics covered stretched beyond the scope of the show at that time we couldn't manage to get that material on air – until now.First up is Ayako Yamaguchi, who joined us for Episode 55 in order to discuss Fushimi Sake. At the time of the show, because Fushimi was the topic at-hand we kept the content focused as-such, however when discussing Fushimi, it's impossible to leave out the impact of and relationship with two other neighboring sake producing powerhouses: Nada and Itami. In this segment, Ayako shares with us a bit of historical context surrounding this relationship between this sake-making trifecta of the Kansai region, as well as discusses the challenges of researching for such deep and vast historical topics.Next, we're rejoined by Water, Wood and Wild Things author, Hannah Kirshner from Episode 58. Seeing as how we are a show about sake (and shochu), much of the content from that interview that made it on air were discussions centered more directly around sake-specific references and experiences outlined in her book, where her time with Shishi no Sato producer, Matsuura Shuzo, is a significant component. However, Hannah's book is about a great deal more than sake, and to fully appreciate the role of sake both in the book, as well as in general, it's really many of those seemingly peripheral components that are, actually, just as central. In this part of the interview, Hannah shares with us her relationship with food and cooking as a part of her life in Yamanaka and how that manifested itself the book, we discuss the wonderful range of expressions for the word “water” and the similarities between the worlds of tea and sake, and she shares with us how her ever-present role as an author documenting her experience was received as a component of her life in the countryside.Lastly, we once again hear from Xavier Thuizat, who joined us back on Episode 53 to share with us the process of developing and hosting the world class sake competition that is Kura Master. That story in and of itself is a fascinating one, which is why we kept the focus on it for that episode, however Xavier had some very provocative food for thought when the topic of terroir came up in relation to sake. Tune in to hear about how he considers an emphasis on excessive rice polishing to be a challenge to expressions of authenticity in sake, how the dependance upon specific yeast strains is destroying the soul of sake, and why Geographical Indications (GI) could play an important role in actually simplifying the communication surrounding sake while contributing to communicating the inherent values of the beverage. Unlikely as it may sound, Catholic fiction has a certain amount of mainstream appeal in Japanese literature. Sono Ayako, one of Japan's most famous novelists, wrote a novel about St. Maximilian Kolbe called Miracles, which has just been translated into English. Miracles is a semiautobiographical account of the author's personal investigation into the miracles approved by the Vatican for Kolbe's canonization. Her ambivalence towards her Catholic faith is challenged as she traces Kolbe's steps from his childhood to his self-sacrifice in Auschwitz, with his time in Japan standing in between as the ascetic crucible which made him a saint. Ayako writes: "Before he died, this priest flung a tough question like a red-hot iron rod at the dried-up soul of modern Man. The question was, 'what does it mean for us to love one another?'" Translator Kevin Doak joins the show to discuss Miracles, Catholic fiction in Japan (which extends far beyond Endo's Silence), and…Endo's Silence. Ayako is a woman who, in her words, is “not an expert. Just a lonely mum trying to navigate miscarriage, motherhood, and depression.” While she is not busy keeping up with her spirited son, Takeo, she serves as a relentless supporter for parents navigating the heartbreak and secondary losses surrounding an “out of order death” in memory of her daughter, Emi. She is also in the process of creating her business 'Emi & Company' where bereaved parents and families can purchase tools for recovery and access healing resources. In this heart-polishing and courageously vulnerable conversation, Lisa and Ayako discuss the early deaths of their children and the postpartum cycles of grief, change, healing, and hope that can follow a miscarriage. This podcast is in honor of Emi (Ayako) and Rowan (Lisa) and all the babies who are no longer with us earth-side. May they continue to grow love in our hearts and give us purpose and strength with each passing day. Forever cherished, always remembered. Before WWII, the Tenge family ruled over their massive land holdings. But with the American occupation, their land is divvied up and the family, already in a state of deep moral decay, resorts to even more desperate measures to hold on to what they have. Osamu Tezuka's epic casts a critical eye on how Japan was forever transformed by its post-war fate -- all through the eyes of a family on the verge of an apocalypse. Deeply ambitious, Ayako is at times a mashup of genres, from political thrillers, police procedurals, and crime sagas. Yet it all winds back to the fallout from a single crime that happened in the isolated Japanese countryside, and the fate of a little girl who was an unfortunate witness.

In this episode, Dr. Yoshimura weaves kimono into the study of Japanese material culture and folklore from the Meiji Period, noting how kimono fashion and cultural practices changed during the Meiji Period as kimono became Japan's national garment. We discuss the materiality of folklore studies, Meiji kimono, and practices of kimono wearing today before talking about Dr. Yoshimura's work on Asian-American grocery stores.
