Related: Book Review: On the Edge: The GamblersI have previously been heavily involved in sports betting. That world was very good to me. The times were good, as were the profits. It was a skill game, and a form of positive-sum entertainment, and I was happy to participate and help ensure the sophisticated customer got a high quality product. I knew it wasn't the most socially valuable enterprise, but I certainly thought it was net positive. When sports gambling was legalized in America, I was hopeful it too could prove a net positive force, far superior to the previous obnoxious wave of daily fantasy sports. It brings me no pleasure to conclude that this was not the case. The results are in. Legalized mobile gambling on sports, let alone casino games, has proven to be a huge mistake. The societal impacts are far worse than I expected. But ideally you would also have some things that are giving you a sense of purpose, some things that you're relaxing from. And I think most of us, even while we're working, have reference points for this, that the vacation that you had after that time when you were really, really busy is just all the sweeter because you feel like you really earned it. And I think the same holds true in retirement, that if you can bring that balance, that sense of your accomplishing things, and it doesn't really matter what it is...It's very individual specific, but just something that is purpose that is not pure relaxation, I think you'll enjoy your relaxation that much more. Short Answers To BIG Questions About Agile Leaders What Is an Agile Leader? Three qualities define an agile leader. First, agile leaders are comfortable with uncertainty. They're willing to hear and say, “I don't know.” They understand not everything can be stated with certainty. This means they can accept it when a team says they'll be done in five or six months. Second, agile leaders guide; they don't command. An agile leader does not tell people the specific steps to take to achieve a goal. Instead, the agile leader creates a culture of teamwork, transparency, and continuous improvement. This environment empowers team members to achieve great things. Third, agile leaders do less but accomplish more. Agile leaders are rarely a flurry of activity. Instead, they motivate and inspire others to do more of the right things. Jazz great Thelonious Monk was known for leaving silence between the notes he played. He said, “What you don't play can be more important than what you do.” Like Monk, an agile leader knows that what they don't do–where they leave space–can be more important than what they do. This year's Easter Monday saw Samantha's kid get into a bike park accident in Cape Town, requiring emergency stitches at a local hospital. Because it was a public holiday and the admin staff was off work, the administrative officer promised to send them the paperwork. Driving to the hospital after three weeks, she was told to leave her email address and the report would be emailed to her. She was informed she'd need to pay R850 for a report signed by a doctor or R350 for a clinical report completed by a nurse after yet another lengthy delay. In this episode, your host, Thomas Caleel, delves into the world of college supplements and supplemental essays. With the approaching November 1 deadline for early action and early decision applications, Thomas aims to ease concerns and provide a roadmap for success in tackling these critical components of the college application process. Key Points: Understanding the Significance of Supplements: Supplements are an essential part of your college application, offering schools the chance to convey their values and interests to prospective students. Careful reading and research are vital when responding to supplement questions. Planning Ahead for Interactive Supplements: Some schools have interactive supplements, meaning your choice of major or academic interest can trigger specific essay prompts. Avoid last-minute panic by indicating your academic interest early and considering all potential essay prompts. Honesty and Alignment: Be honest about your academic interests and goals. Ensure your chosen major aligns with your extracurricular activities and experiences, as inconsistencies may raise questions. Crafting Effective Essays: Supplemental essays typically revolve around why you want to study at a particular school and how you intend to contribute to the community. Avoid generic responses and instead focus on your unique experiences, interests, and how they relate to the school's offerings. Short Answers and Lists: Don't overthink short answer questions or lists. Use them to showcase your genuine interests, hobbies, and quirks. Avoid trying to conform to perceived expectations and instead be yourself. Conclusion: College supplements and supplemental essays are crucial elements of the application process. Start early, thoroughly research each school's values and offerings, and craft authentic responses that reflect your unique personality and goals. Remember, this process is an opportunity to show how you'll contribute to the school's community and make your mark on campus. Best of luck as you navigate this important step in your college journey! About Thomas Caleel Thomas is an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania. Short Answer? No."Follow-Up on the Thanksgiving Indult, by Sharon KabelGREGORY DIPIPPOOur thanks once again to Sharon Kabel for sharing her research with NLM, this time following up on her November article on the day-after-Thanksgiving indult for eating meat.In November of last year, I shared a provocative hypothesis: thanks to the discovery of new evidence, it was possible for the first time to confirm that the long-rumored American “Turkey Indult” directly from the Pope did in fact occur, although not quite the way we thought.Participants in the “Turkey Indult” conversation generally fall into three camps:● No, the Turkey Indult did not happen; it has been conflated with diocesan permissions for indults.● Yes, Pope Pius XII did issue a Turkey Indult in 1958 that remained applicable beyond 1958.● You're still talking about this?My position was a fourth way: The papally-issued Turkey Indult happened in 1958 only, and was likely issued by Pope St. John XXIII, not Pius XII. And yes, we are still talking about it, thank you. (For brevity's sake, I will refer to the event in question as the Turkey Indult throughout the article.)"https://www.newliturgicalmovement.org/2021/02/follow-up-on-thanksgiving-indult-by.html#.Y31VZprMKUk"On the Mythical Pius XII Thanksgiving Indult: Guest Article by Sharon KabelGREGORY DIPIPPOWe are grateful once again to Sharon Kabel for sharing her research with us, this time on the so-called Thanksgiving indult ascribed to Pope Pius XII.Every year around Thanksgiving, a flurry of social media posts make the rounds in traditional Catholic circles, concerning a mysterious “Turkey Indult” from the 1950s. They all follow the same essential pattern: an assertion that it is widely known that Pius XII granted an indult to Catholics in the United States to dispense them from the obligation to abstain from meat on the Friday after Thanksgiving."https://www.newliturgicalmovement.org/2020/11/on-mythical-pius-xii-thanksgiving.html#.Y31VZprMKUk Contact Me:Email: FonsecaProduction@gmail.comWebsite: http://catholicconversations.buzzsprout.comIG: @ffonzeFacebook: Adrian Fonseca Facebook: Catholic Conversations Twitter: @AdrianFonzeYouTube: Catholic ConversationsYouTube: Adrian Fonseca

In this episode of Big Questions, Short Answers, we talk about a topic that's been keeping leadership and HR staff awake at night for more than a year now: how to create a better employee experience. With all the fallout from the Great Resignation and high turnover, companies are struggling to answer this question and retain their workforce. I'm joined by Andy Alsop, an entrepreneur who is championing the concept of Employee Supremacy. For decades, companies have operated under a model of Shareholder Supremacy, where leadership decisions are driven solely by what's best for shareholders. Andy argues that when a company's leadership decides what's best for employees before anything else, all of the company's stakeholders will benefit. In this episode, Andy and I discuss how companies can make their employees feel valued, how to promote company culture, and why Employee Supremacy is a smart business strategy. Make sure you tune in for one actionable way you can make this shift toward employee supremacy today. https://thereceptionist.com/employee-supremacy/ (Check out Andy's Employee Supremacy podcast series at thereceptionist.com). In this episode of Big Questions, Short Answers, we're talking about a theme I've realized is pretty common along the entrepreneurial journey: making mistakes. One of the goals of this podcast is to help you learn from my mistakes, but when you find that you've made one, it's important to recover gracefully. How you recover from mistakes can make or break you for a long period of time. If you're anything like me, you might beat yourself up when things go sideways. As hard as it is, the best (and only) way to recover from mistakes is to use them as a learning opportunity. In this episode of Big Questions, Short Answers, we're talking about those times when it does not pay to negotiate. Listen, I am a huge fan of negotiating—but only if it has a purpose, and it works for both parties. When you are paying someone for their expertise and years of experience, everything they have learned culminates in one hourly rate or one project fee. Hard negotiation is disrespectful. You can certainly negotiate on things like contract length and terms, but trying to hard negotiate down an hourly rate is crap and leaves a vendor walking away feeling like crap. (BTW, https://memes.com/m/when-the-client-says-can-you-do-cheaper-vz48ZyPjqRj (here's the meme that inspired today's topic).) So how do you know when to negotiate and when to accept? In this episode of Big Questions, Short Answers, we're talking about that nagging feeling that plagues many successful people: imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is what happens when you achieve success but feel like you don't deserve it, or that you're somehow a fraud. I'll answer the big question of the episode right here in the show notes: you do not overcome imposter syndrome. No permanent solution exists because the bar is always getting higher. When you overcome one challenge and finally feel confident, the next challenge comes along and you feel like crying again because you know nothing (or is that just me?). In this episode of Big Questions, Short Answers, we're talking about why everyone should consider creating content to share online and what you'll learn from the process. The answer isn't to be another talking head on the internet, or even to grow a personal brand (though I'm a big advocate of that too), but what you learn about yourself when you create. When I started creating my own content, I was terrified. I had spent years creating content behind the veil of a brand. But creating content for myself has helped me find my voice. It helped me develop a sense of accountability to MYSELF and discipline that I didn't know I had. Curious about creating your own content but not sure where to start? Stay tuned to the end for practical tips on developing a realistic content plan, where to post and how to repurpose content to keep it fresh. In this episode of Big Questions, Short Answers, we're talking about what it looks like when we push everything else aside so we can focus on work—often to our detriment. This is a huge problem that entrepreneurs struggle with in our “hustle” culture, so I've been doing some research lately to learn more. Addiction is a serious condition and should be diagnosed by a doctor, but I'll share some warning signs that it might be time to walk away from the laptop. If you are a workaholic like me, this list will hit close to home. At the end of the episode, I share some ideas I've found for combatting the constant urge to work (including literally pinning my arms down). Tune in for ideas that might help you think about something other than work (at least for a minute).
