As a nation we are learning a powerful lesson in real time. In the just completed first 100 days of the Trump administration, the president has led a reckless campaign of retribution that relies on the flouting of laws, courts and the constitution itself. From freezing federal funding to nonprofits that keep families fed to seizing immigrants and dispatching them without due process to foreign prisons he is adhering to Project 2025, the administration's autocratic playbook for diminishing civil rights, a precursor to dismantling democracy. In this week's episode of Power Station I speak with Skye Perryman, the intrepid and unbowed President and CEO of Democracy Forward, the national nonprofit on the frontlines of defending those whom the administration targets from his attacks. Democracy Forward is winning in the courts and in communities by giving a voice to those who are under attack. Its communications team is telling the stories of nonprofit leaders, lawyers and immigration advocates who are standing up for their rights and continuing to serve their communities. And Skye invites us to be a part of the movement. Listen and learn how we can move forward together.
There are now multiple cases challenging the administration's Alien Enemies Act proclamation; including a hearing by Judge Boasberg for an amended complaint filed on behalf of all the detainees in El Salvador.Judge Xinis has had to pause the discovery in the Abrego Garcia case to contemplate the Trump Administration's invocation of the state secrets and deliberative process privilege.Justice Department lawyers continue to lose credibility before judges who are upset by their shoddy work.President Trump pulls the nomination of Ed Martin for Us Attorney in the District of Columbia and appoints Fox anchor Jeanine Pirro as interim US Attorney.Plus listener questions…Skye Perrymanhttps://x.com/skyeperrymanhttps://democracyforward.org/Questions for the pod? Part 1:We talk with Skye Perryman, President and CEO of Democracy Forward. and Dr. Ray Perryman, President and CEO of the Perryman Group.Grouphttps://www.perrymangroup.com/has half a century of experience in developing systems, analyzing complex problems, and communicating effectively with legislative, regulatory, and judicial bodies, Fortune 500 companies, business organizations, civic community leaders, and audiences through the world. We discuss the chaos that the Trump administration has brought to the US. This is not sustainable in the long term, and is ruinous to the country. It is obvious that Trump is NOT prioritizing the US. People are afraid of many things now: the economy is declining, freedoms are being abrogated, and the worldwide opinion is that the US is no longer trustworthy. We discuss what ordinary people need to do to counteract this destruction.Part 2: We talk with Harold Myerson and Bill Curry.Harold Meyerson is editor at large of The American Prospect.Bill Curry was a Connecticut state senator, comptroller and two time Democratic nominee for governor who served as Counselor to the President in the Clinton White House. He has written for Salon, the Daily Beast, the Huffington Post and the Hartford Courant and has provided commentary on National Public Radio, MSNBC and many other news outlets. We discuss the phases of Trump's second presidency: Chaos and Retribution. Chaos exists now, in the civil rights arena, and in the economic state of the nation. Facts seem to be immaterial, we are being asked to operate in Trump's mad world. "This is Russia's first successful invasion". We are now in a techno-autocracy.We discuss the outreach by Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes via their tour of the country, and the message they are sending: Resist and vote. The U.S. Institute for Peace announced Monday that despite being independent of the executive branch and controlling its own building and the land it sits on, their objections to members of Elon Musk's DOGE team trespassing in their building were overridden by D.C. police. That came after an earlier confrontation in which DOGE was accompanied by the FBI. Skye Perryman, president of Democracy Forward, who is suing the U.S. Marshals for information on DOGE after a similar raid, joins to discuss the unprecedented nature of DOGE leveraging the threat of armed law enforcement against another part of the government.
If people are wondering where the pushback to the nightmare of the Trump administration is, it's in the courts. In the absence of executive leadership, and with the abandonment of of legislative leadership, the judicial branch has gone from democracy's last line of defense to it's first. In fact, there are lawyers and activists working day and night to hold off the worst instincts of presidency. As Democracy Forward's Skye Perryman says, “The most powerful tool the Trump administration has is to convince us we have no power, but it's not true. There are people fighting everyday, not just to hold off the worst decisions, but to continue to move us forward towards something better.” Our country's under attack and our media isn't even talking about it. Which is why, now more than ever, we need to support those doing independent work to tell the truth, when it's increasingly hard to find. Weeks after being named the chief information security officer for the Defense Department, Katie Arrington was announced Monday as the Pentagon's official “Performing the Duties of the Department of Defense Chief Information Officer.” The DOD Office of the CIO announced the move by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to place Arrington as the acting CIO in a post on LinkedIn. The post also confirmed that Leslie Beavers, who had been acting CIO since John Sherman left the role last June, will return to her primary role as principal deputy CIO. A defense official confirmed Arrington started in the role Monday. An organization that's filed multiple legal challenges against the Trump administration is focusing its attention on the potential use of artificial intelligence in personnel decisions. Democracy Forward, a social welfare organization, said Monday it “launched a public records investigation” into the administration's AI use, including filing requests under the Freedom of Information Act. Skye Perryman, president and CEO of Democracy Forward, said in a written statement that the American people deserve to know what is going on — including if and how artificial intelligence is being used to reshape the departments and agencies people rely on daily. The organization's requests come after reporting by NBC that Trump and Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency planned to use AI to review employee responses to the Office of Personnel Management's “five bullets” email. This week, we're continuing our coverage of the lead-up to November's elections by looking at an institution that has become increasingly contentious over the past four years: the U.S. Supreme Court. The specter of the Court has loomed over these elections like never before—from former President Trump repeatedly taking credit for the overturning of Roe v. Wade and thanking the Justices he appointed for doing so, to the next president's role in reshaping the Court. What role is the Court playing in this election cycle and how will this election cycle influence the next four years of Supreme Court rulings?Helping us to sort through these questions and set the record straight is our very special guest, Skye Perryman: Skye L. Perryman is President and CEO of Democracy Forward, a nonpartisan, national legal organization that promotes democracy and progress through litigation, regulatory engagement, policy education, and research. She previously served as Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. We discuss the deep impact of Project 2025 policies on the American people, even if only 10-15% were implemented. Well beyond abortion bans and no-fault divorces, Project 2025 would adversely affect democracy. Thursday, August 10th, 2023 Skye Perryman is the President and CEO of Democracy Forward, an organization that uses the law to build collective power and advance a bold, vibrant democracy. We discuss successful legal action to protect and advance the rights of all Americans. A culmination of factors have come together to create a moment in which there are serious existential questions about what type of government and what kind of society Americans will be living in. Backsliding in areas such as voting rights, reproductive rights, and freedom to read are leading to legal fights across the nation. This year alone, over 400 bills have been introduced to block transgender people from receiving basic healthcare, education, and the right to publicly exist. These bills not only harm individual trans people, they're also an attack on our freedom and our democracy. Just like with reproductive rights, it all comes down to extremist politicians inserting themselves into a conversation that should be between a person and their doctor. Or between a kid and their parents! We're joined by Elliott Kozuch, who shares their thoughts as the Senior Communications Strategist for NARAL Pro-Choice America and a person who's trans and non-binary. Elliott talks about what the fight for trans rights and reproductive rights have in common, and what we can do to band together and stand up against extremism. Then Jasmine sits down with Danica Roem, a Virginia state delegate, a journalist, and the first openly trans person to be elected as a state representative. Jasmine and Danica chat about authenticity, trans rights, and what people get wrong about the suburbs. Finally, Amanda, Rachel and Jasmine raise a glass to high school theater, 100 Women Strong Ohio, and Junior's Cheesecake in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”If you want to stay in the loop about the pending ban on the abortion pill, we encourage you to join us in our Emergency Trouble Huddle on Monday, March 20th. Skye Perryman, CEO of Democracy Forward, talks us through the implications of Roe v Wade and its recent overturning. Outlawing abortion in several states, we discuss what the Supreme Court's ruling means for women, America, and Democracy.
What would your nonprofit be able to achieve with a law firm on its side? This question was tested when, in the wake of the 2016 presidential election, a small group of experienced litigators launched Democracy Forward, taking on the Trump administration's assaults on the voting, environmental, immigration, reproductive, and health care rights of low income and communities of color. They quickly mobilized a team of legal, communications and policy experts and partnered with nonprofits working on the frontlines of civil and human rights advocacy. Democracy Forward prevailed against attempts to undermine the Affordable Care Act, terminate Teen Pregnancy Prevention Programs, and halt illegal investigations of individual's voting histories. And since the election of President Biden in 2020, the drumbeat of right-wing antagonism towards democratic policies and institutions continues. Democracy Forward is expanding its staff and array of legal interventions, including deep engagement in the regulatory process, to meet the demand. President and CEO Skye Perryman starts every new project by listening to what community leaders have experienced and the solutions they seek. She and Democracy Forward are in this battle for democracy for the long haul.
If there is one person on Earth who can guide us in restoring our faith in democracy it's Skye Perryman, President and CEO of Democracy Forward. Skye is an expert and advocate on reproductive rights and in this episode we talk about the impacts of the Dobbs decision, what we need to do to fight abortion bans, and how attacks on abortion access are threats to democracy as a whole. Democracy Forward "[uses] the law to fight for good government on behalf of all Americans, challenging abuses of power and bringing legal action on behalf of people who need it most."
