Catherine McNiel is our guest and WOW, what a powerful and sacred conversation this is about fear and faith. Catherine's newest book is titled, Fearing Bravely: Risking Love for our Neighbors, Strangers, and Enemies. This book is an amazing mirror into which we all might look to see how much we might have been unknowingly discipled in fear instead of love. Catherine is an author and speaker who lives in the Chicagoland area with her husband, where they care for their three kids and their enormous garden. Catherine has studied and taught Intercultural Studies and Theology, has an degree in Human Service Counseling, and is working on a Master of Divinity at North Park Theological Seminary. She has a couple of other books that came out before Fearing Bravely.... those books are also about the intermingling of spirituality and our ordinary lives... One is titled, All Shall Be Well: Awakening to God's Presence in His Messy, Abundant World.... and another is called Long Days of Small Things: Motherhood as a Spiritual Discipline which was an ECPA New Author finalist. Catherine is a sought after writer and speaker; her work has been featured by numerous magazines, websites, churches, and ministries. Catherine McNiel writes about finding God in the real world we live in daily calling these observations "everyday epiphanies." Examples include what we learn about life from the changing seasons, how gardening can connect community, and motherhood as a spiritual discipline (AKA when you don't have much quiet or time in your days). In this conversation, we talk through all of this plus what human interaction looks like during this slice of history and how to engage neighbors, strangers, and enemies well. I think you'll love it. catherinemcniel.com @catherinemcniel on Instagram All Shall Be Well: Awakening to God's Presence in His Messy, Abundant World Fearing Bravely: Risking Love for Our Neighbors, Strangers, and Enemies Long Days of Small Things: Motherhood as a Spiritual Discipline PARTNERSHIPS Ritual - Ritual offers a variety of multivitamins, protein, and gut health products that have all been made traceable so you know the full story behind what you're putting in your body. If you're anything like me, you probably start your day with hot coffee and short prayers. Lord, give me strength, help me wake up, please make the baby sleep a little bit longer, please be the patience I come up short with. You might be mentally reviewing and ordering your tasks for the day, or you might prefer to wing it. You might be readying children for school or gearing up for “long days of small things” with your littles, as the author and theologian Catherine McNiel so aptly phrases it in her book of the same name. Whatever season of mothering you are in, I imagine your plate is full and your capacity for care might be waning. You are doing all that you can and trusting that God's grace will provide for all that falls through the cracks, and these days, it may feel like pretty much everything is. All Shall Be Well: Conversations with Women in the Academy and Beyond
"Overcoming evil with good and with love — I can't think of anything more active and intentional and subversive." — Catherine McNiel Join us for this conversation with writer and theology student Catherine McNiel as we discuss the call to love our neighbor, what that call looks like in the world of academia, and the grace we need to get there. Let me invite you into a conversation with Catherine McNiel — writer, theology student, and second time guest on the podcast. Catherine has just released a new book entitled Fearing Bravely: Risking Love for Our Neighbors, Strangers, and Enemies. In our conversation, we talk about Jesus's call to love our enemies and the implications of this call on our lives today. We dig deep into the parable of the Good Samaritan and sift through issues of individual and systemic responsibility, and talk about the unique ways we can practice this element of faith in university and professional settings. The thing I love best about Catherine's book and about our conversation is the way Catherine approaches this skill of loving others through a lens of spiritual formation, weaving it all together with practical exercises that enfold us in a place of spiritual safety. Catherine pastors her readers and listeners through this journey with great care, and at the very end, she even offers some fresh thoughts on loving others in relationship to Russia's war on Ukraine, a world event that began just days before we recorded this episode. “Fear often leads us to neglect before hate.”This is one of those episodes that will likely make my top 2022 list. I met Catherine McNiel on a Women of Welcome trip to El Paso. She is an author, writer, editor, and speaker who wrestles with the creative, redemptive work of God in our ordinary lives, and truly living as Jesus commanded us to live. Her newest book, Fearing Bravely, was birthed after seeing a discrepancy between how we're living and talking, and the way Jesus talks and acts. She talks about fear as a frenemy, that while it is something that can protect us, it is also something that people can exploit for their own benefit. It can cause us to neglect the very people that God called us to love. We hear over and over in scripture that perfect love casts out fear. Maybe what we really need is to ask God to turn our fear into compassion, and take seriously what He has commanded us to do. This book and conversation was so convicting for me - I know you'll walk away with something to chew on!Connect with JamieFacebook // Twitter // Instagram // YouTubeGET ALL THE LINKS FROM THE SHOW HERE
Catherine McNiel writes about the creative and redemptive work of God in our real, ordinary lives. Her upcoming book, https://www.navpress.com/p/fearing-bravely/9781641583268 (Fearing Bravely: Risking Love for Our Neighbors, Strangers, and Enemies), just released from NavPress in February 2022. Catherine studies theology while caring for three kids, two jobs, and one enormous garden. If Jesus commands Christians to love their neighbors, why are so many North American Christians taught to fear their neighbors? The US church is known as a people who are afraid, who have been nurtured through fear into hatred, and who have moved from hatred to violence—or at least to neglect. This fear, too often lived out boldly in the name of Jesus, is a false religion. If God instructs Christians to welcome strangers, why are so many US Christians ignoring the scriptural commands that say not to withhold hospitality or help from anyone in need? So why do we fear strangers, especially those needing hospitality, afraid that their presence may threaten what we have? If Jesus taught all of His followers to love their enemies, why aren't more North American Christians regularly praying and hearing sermons about how to pray for those who actively harm them? Instead, many church-goers in this polarized context, create enemies in their minds, seeing anyone who thinks, believes, looks, or lives differently from North American Christians as dangerous, a threat to their way of living. The Christian community exists to declare and demonstrate God's love and to follow Jesus in practicing love over fear, even in unsafe times and places. It's time to call all people of faith to reclaim our brave fear of God and risk transformative love for the sake of our neighbors, the strangers among us, and our enemies. Christians are to be people of God's Kingdom, which is a place of flourishing and belonging where all nations, races, tribes and languages are welcome. Fearing Bravely teaches us that we have nothing to fear. Instead, we can respond to our fear problem with a brave love that emerges from choosing to let our fear and awe of God overcome our fear of everything else. Catherine McNiel writes with conviction, wisely guiding us to recognize our fear and, with God's help, not let it limit us to love courageously all who are among us. It's time to call all people of faith to reclaim our brave fear of God and risk transformative love for the sake of our neighbors, the strangers among us, and our enemies.Christians are to be people of God's Kingdom, which is a place of flourishing and belonging where all nations, races, tribes and languages are welcome. Fearing Bravely teaches us that we have nothing to fear. Instead, we can respond to our fear problem with a brave love that emerges from choosing to let our fear and awe of God overcome our fear of everything else.Catherine McNiel writes with conviction, wisely guiding us to recognize our fear and, with God's help, not let it limit us to love courageously all who are among us.The A World of Difference Podcast is brought to you in partnership with Missio Alliance.Stay In Touch: Connect on Facebook and Instagram with thoughts, questions, and feedback. What happens when the place that is supposed to be a source of comfort ends up causing you some of the greatest pain of your life? The avenue God created for both healing and sharing the good news of the gospel can sometimes be where many of us are intentionally or unintentionally wounded by the people within its doors. In this episode, Davey sits down with author Catherine McNiel as she tenderly shares her experience with being wounded by the Church. As a young girl, Catherine felt completely abandoned by the community she once knew and found herself grappling well into adulthood with how to trust again in the context of Church. Where fear threatened to keep her isolated, God offered her another way, the way of love. No matter what the cause of church hurt may be, accepting God's invitation into love and freedom rather than fear and distrust is the only way forward.
How do we fear bravely? How do love and courage and fear dwell together? Author, Catherine McNiel joins us to share about her new book Fearing Bravely: Risking Love for Our Neighbors, Strangers, and Enemies. Join her conversation with 3MMM host, Eilieen Campbell-Reed as they share about what it means to not be paralyzed by fear but use it as a tool to grow and live out of courage and love. #pastoralimagination #givingmyselfpermission #pandemicpermissionproject #fearingbravely #riskinglove #femaleauthors #clergylife #theologypodcast #clergypodcast #clergywomen #spiritualwriting

In today's episode, author Catherine McNiel shares the inspiration and questions behind her upcoming book, Fearing Bravely: Risking Love for Our Neighbors, Strangers and Enemies. It's a call back to the kind of discipleship that Jesus lived out and asks of us, and of his earliest disciples. What prompted a transformation of the timid disciples into the bold, fearless preachers we see after Jesus's resurrection? We talk about: how fear is a helpful - yes, helpful! - feeling, and how it can also hold us back warning signs of being “discipled by fear” why loving others can feel threatening the idol of safety, and the good news about surrendering it to God what fear of God looks like, and doesn't what privilege adds to our propensity for fear how to respond when your calling is not comfortable — Find Catherine at CatherineMcNiel.com, @catherinemcniel on Instagram and Twitter, and @catherinemcnielwrites on Facebook. Mystery may be a great style of writing or a perfect theme for a Netflix series. However, when it is the title of a season of our lives, do we feel the same? For myself it challenging to see why (pick your subject) had to be this way in our life and why God allowed it to occur. I hope I give myself the grace to know He is good, but when I am in the thick of it, will I feel the same way or remember this sentiment? Most likely not. Author, Catherine McNeil shares about experiencing a head trauma in 2019 while on vacation and the journey of healing slowly. Catherine gently shares her insights and how she continued to cultivate ways to see God's presence in the mystery.Reflection Questions:Take a moment every day this week to jot down how you have seen God's creative redemptive work in your life. That can be as simple as seeing frost covering the ground, the turning colors of fall leaves or a smile shared between friends. This will help you cultivate that Is there a mystery in your life? Melanie talks with Catherine McNiel, author of Long Days of Small Things: Motherhood as a Spiritual Discipline. They talk about the greatest popcorn in the world, how they find time for spiritual disciplines, finding God in the chaos -- in changing diapers, in washing dishes, in driving to work -- and also how they need to lighten up about other people's advice about their parenting. They also dig into the importance of bringing women's voices into the forefront, and Star Wars bad lip reading, so listen in and lighten up!
Catherine McNiel found herself in the middle of mothering. Pregnant, with two small children already underfoot, she was forced to tackle the question, what happens to a mom's spiritual journey? Do exhaustion and distraction prevent mothers everywhere from having a deep and meaningful spiritual life? Or does God perhaps have a rich spiritual journey available to moms right here and now? In her book Long Days of Small Things, Catherine tackles this question by discovering the spiritual disciplines already built into a mother's days. She shares some of those practices with us on this episode of The Open Door Sisterhood Podcast, (along with her favorite apps and go-to drink.) An encouraging conversation for any mom who has ever wondered, can I connect with God during these minutes, days, years of caring for small people and living in the middle of the mundane? A great episode to share with your mama friends and to take this episode with you as you complete your everyday, not-so-glamorous, tasks. A conversation for the laundry folding, swim team driving, kitchen sweeping activities. Because these small moments are the doors that God has opened for us, and no door is too small, or too insignificant, for his purposes.

Theology For the Rest of Us | Quick Answers to the Questions About God and the Bible
Parenting is one of the greatest privileges, and one of the greatest responsibilities, that God has given to human beings. If you are a parent you know how hard parenting can be, and how tough it is to feel like you're being a good spiritual leader to your kids as well. But even the little mundane tasks can be used by God for His glory and for the good of your kids. In this episode, our host Kenny interviews author and blogger Catherine McNiel about viewing parenthood (more specifically, motherhood) as a spiritual discipline. The busyness of parenting feels like it encroaches on our ability to practice spiritual disciplines, but the tasks of being a good parent themselves can be spiritual and sacred if we choose to view them that way. As a mother of three, Catherine knows how it feels to miss out on your "quiet time" with the Lord. She even confesses to occasionally escaping to the bathroom, just to get a few minutes of alone time. But what if we viewed the mundane tasks of parenting and motherhood as being spiritual? How would that change our lives and our families? Get a copy of Catherine McNiel's New Book: Long Days of Small Things Check out Catherine McNiel's website: CatherineMcNiel.com
