Drummer Jon O Garrett of Turbid North talks about the Antartica origins of the band as well as the six years it took to put out their record “The Decline”, growing up playing in bands/in bars with his early band The Destro, the busy last few years of touring with bands; Warbeast, Mas Generator & Shock Withdrawal, Tommy Buckley of Soilent Green as an influence, the two days to prep for a month-long EU tour with Weedeater (and acclimating to the stage volume of the band), Meshuggah and Tomas Haake's drumming as influences, playing border towns in Mexico and Bulgaria for a tour with Mondo Generator, and a whirlwind 2024 with 19 countries!
New Orleans' own Soilent Green have endured countless struggles and tragedies throughout their tumultuous 40-year history, crafting a unique blend of death, grind, and stoner/doom. While often associated with the “sludge” scene of the region, the band separated themselves from the pack with classic records like Sewn Mouth Secrets and Confrontation. However, none have seemed as unhinged and violent as 2001's A Deleted Symphony for the Beaten Down! Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 253 features an interview with Sammy Duet of Goatwhore. Does Goatwhore need an introduction? Formed by members of Soilent Green and Acid Bath, they were an exponent of USBM before those letters really meant anything. The band soon became one of the biggest to emerge from the American black metal scene - even as their sound grew to encompass thrash, sludge, and hardcore punk. I spoke with Goatwhore guitarist/co-founder Sammy Duet about how the band's NOLA origins shaped their sound, and the reactions their music elicited from European black metal fans. We also spoke about why their latest album Angels Hung from the Arches of Heaven is their ugliest, and Kurt Ballou's suggestions on improving their arrangements. My thanks again to Sammy for speaking with me, and to you for listening. We welcome to IUF, seasoned veteran guitarist Jimmy Bower from the New Orleans-based band Eyehategod. The doom-slinging sludge-punk masters are back with their 6th studio album “A History Of Nomadic Behavior”. This album, while it does cover a lot of ground in the political themes, is also the reflection of the chaos and elation the band have experienced over the past three years of touring. Jimmy dives into those experiences and how the process went when the members got together to record the new songs, even during quarantine, which is an easier-said-than-done process. We also talk about the New Orleans metal scene, and how local bands such as Goatwhore, Crowbar, Soilent Green and others continue to make the music for themselves and the passionate fans in the locale. It's a scene that's been around for over 30 years and will still continue to grow. The new album had some prominent work done by dedicated producers and mixers alongside Eyehategod, which helped Jimmy and his bandmates be at ease while giving it their all in this masterpiece of a record. Tune into this episode now with Jimmy and make sure to buy/stream Eyehategod's new album “A History Of Nomadic Behavior” out now on Century Media Records.

Here is the 98th installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with Matt Harvey of Exhumed. bit.ly/335mXrm My history with Exhumed goes back almost 20 years, to the release of their second album Slaughtercult. Along with Nasum, Soilent Green, and other Relapse Records signees of the late Nineties, the band can be credited with grindcore's resurgence at the turn of the millennium, as well as the proliferation of gore-grind (or as Exhumed call it, "gore fucking metal"). I spoke with Matt about Exhumed's upcoming seventh album Horror, how Sebastian Phillips (of Noisem) joined the band, and the ways that the B-horror video culture of the Eighties and Nineties influenced them. We also discussed Exhumed's legacy, and why it's the project that Matt keeps returning to. My thanks to Matt for speaking with me, and to you for listening. TRACKLIST: "As Hammer To Anvil" taken from the album All Guts, No Glory "Ravenous Cadavers" taken from the forthcoming album Horror "Night Work" taken from the album Death Revenge "In The Name of Gore" taken from the album Anatomy Is Destiny "This Axe Was Made to Grind" taken from the album Slaughtercult
