We Explore How to Write a Book

This week we take a look back at last year's Book Case episodes focussing on the methodology of writing. We love talking to authors about their technique, their inspirations, and we love exploring how they do what they do. So this week we sew together some of our favorite ideas and methods coming from our authors, on how to write a book. We hope that we have some aspiring authors listening, and that there is inspiration to be taken from each of these ideas. Books mentioned in this week's episode: We Solve Murders by Richard Osman The Grey Wolf by Louise Penny The Time of the Child by Niall Williams Bel Canto: The Annotated Edition by Ann Patchett Colored Television by Danzy Senna Tell me Everything by Elizabeth Strout The History of Sound: Stories by Ben Shattuck Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club by J Ryan Stradal Shanghai by Joseph Kanon The Demon of Unrest by Erik Larson Table for Two by Amor Towles The Hunter by Tana French After Anna by Anna Quindlen Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar Learn more about your ad choices. Ben Shattuck is a renaissance man of sorts, which might be why we dedicated the whole episode to him. He wrote The History of Sound, a thought provoking and beautiful collection of short stories that spans the Eastern Seaboard as well as eons of time. Then there's his general store, which, on top of being the oldest general store in the country also boasts an independent bookstore curated by, you guessed it, Ben Shattuck. Join us. Books mentioned in this week's episode: The History of Sound: Stories by Ben Shattuck Six Walks: In the Footsteps of Henry David Thoreau by Ben Shattuck Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx The Heart in Winter by Kevin Barry This Is Happiness by Niall Williams Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard Ship Fever by Andrea Barrett A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder by David Grann Learn more about your ad choices. What can you expect from Sound Stories? The 2024 class weighs in. Taught by Laura Joyce Davis through the Stanford Storytelling Project, this hands-on, workshop-oriented course is designed to teach you the fundamentals of podcast storytelling. Class work will include pitching, interviewing, scriptwriting, narration, audio editing, and sound design. You'll learn time-honored principles for strong storytelling in any medium, as well as strategies specific to storytelling in sound. Though we focus on audio stories, the craft skills you learn here are transferable to making stories for any medium, from print and performance to film and games. By the end of the course, you will have crafted both a narrative essay and a 10-minute podcast episode that entertains, challenges, and moves your audience. All fully produced student pieces will be published in the Stanford Storytelling Project Soundings podcast. Course info: https://shorturl.at/eLOR0

In addition to being an accomplished composer, musician and producer, Peter Fish is the reason that my husband and I choose to move to Nyack 24 years ago. He raved about this creative, warm village and modeled for us, meaningful ways to be involved in the heart and soul of our community. Peter tells me about his formative years breaking into the music world. When he was a teenager he toured with the Glen Miller Band, Woody Herman Band, Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich. When he was 16 years old, Peter tells the story of playing a gig with the legendary Jaco Pastorius (who was 17 at the time), and his missed opportunity to have Jaco play on his album. Peter has had a successful career arranging, composing and producing music for television & movies. He has experienced being a producer in NYC's large, medium and small music houses, able to re-invent himself, changing as the music business changes. Peter is delighted with his current studio, Sound Stories. You may recall my conversation with Peter's partner, filmmaker Tracey Anarella, in episode #7. Peter and Tracey are vibrant collaborators, co-producing her films with Peter writing the music and even learning 2nd camera! You can hear Peter perform his original music live with the Peter Fish Group - inspired by the innovative electronic music of Miles Davis from the 70s. Enjoy the podcast!
