In this episode I chat to two entrepreneurs in the hospitality space, Duncan Stirling and Charlie Gilkes who founded Inception Group back in 2009. A new exhibition 'Art Deco By The Sea' has opened at the Sainsbury Centre in Norwich, looking at the impact of the movement on the architecture as well as painting and fashion at British seaside towns. The Art Deco movement flourished on Britain’s coast through the boom and bust of the 20s and 30s, bringing a sense of glamour and opportunity to the masses, in a wave of proudly British manufacture and design that evoked far-off exotic places like New York and Paris. Britain rightly celebrates its part in the abolition of slavery but what many people in this country are unaware of is the compensation agreed by the British government in 1833 to pay slave-owners to release their slaves. The cost amounted to 40% of the nation’s budget and the British tax payer was still paying off this debt in the second decade of the 21st century. The wrangling inside and activism outside parliament that led to abolition is at the heart of a new play, The Whip, by Juliet Gilkes Romero which premieres this week at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford. Juliet joins Samira to discuss her play which questions the morality of that long-hidden debt. In a new BBC4 documentary Meet the Family, dierector Catherine Bray explores how families have been portrayed in cinema. Why have families in film often been overlooked in favour of romances, bromances, buddy movies etc. From Mommie Dearest to Back to the Future, she shows how filmmakers have approached the challenge of depicting the most universal relationship of all. Megan Gilkes is a 16 year old racer from Richmond Hill, Canada who’s been in the driver’s seat since the age of nine. She started with karting and won the Barbados 2011 Easykart 60cc half-season championship. A crash and recovery kept her off the track in 2012 through 2014 but she was back at it in 2015 winning multiple races in the Ottowa Challenge Karting Series. Last year she graduated the Skip Barber Racing School and became a member of Dare To Be Different and competed in her first real race car in a Miller Oils F1200 at Mosport. By her fourth race she earned a second place in the US Majors series and today competes in a Formula Vee at Mosport, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park with the Vallis Motor Sport team. This summer she’ll run in South Africa and Brazil with the Challenge Cup Series.

Our series is focusing on scientist, thinkers, and leaders who drive the insights and breakthroughs of breast cancer research. Today's conversation proves a simple math problem: two is better than one. Actually today's conversation also tackles some really complicated math and science. Specifically, how applied mathematics and tumor biology are coming together to drive important new research in breast cancer and metastasis. Doctor Daniele Gilkes is assistant professor of oncology. As well as an assistant professor in chemical and molecular engineering at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. This is her first year as a BCRF grantee. Doctor Paul Macklin is an associate professor of intelligent systems engineering, and a member of the Melvin & Bren Simon Cancer Center at Indiana University. He's a BCRF grantee since 2014. Together, Gilkes and Macklin are apart of a new partnership between the BCRF and the Jayne Koskinas Ted Giovanis Foundation for Health and Policy that links computational scientists with biologists. This partnership includes three multi-institutional collaborations jointly funded to provide new incites into tumor growth, metastasis, and the mechanics of drug resistance. These ground braking studies will have the potential to substantially advance understanding of cancer biology, and improve clinical outcomes. You can tell from the conversation, the inner play, between Dr. Gilkes and Macklin this is a true partnership. You can also tell they're doing incredibly important and hard work, and they are having fun. I found myself wondering and I asked both of them, "Whether a cross discipline approach like theirs just might be the future of research?"

Rohan Gilkes was not the original founder of Wet Shave Club — a monthly box subscription service sending supplies to those men who prefer old-fashioned, traditional shaves. But he saw the potential in the idea, bought out the original owner, and turned his $4,000 investment into $350,000 in revenues in less than a year. Gilkes shares with us how he and his team of 4 was able to turn someone else’s good idea into a great business in such a short amount of time.
