On this week's show, the panel gets swept up by Twisters, and begins by discussing director Lee Isaac Chung's standalone sequel starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones. (For the record, the original 1996 disaster flick, Twister, is a near-perfect, Gabfest-approved comfort watch). Sure, Chung's reboot isn't as weird as the original, and the modern-day renderings of completely plausible natural disasters are alarming, but Twisters did what it was supposed to do: deliver a good, generic summer movie where Glen Powell can be, well, Glen Powell. (Read Dana's review! And Sam Adam's take on the film's approach to climate change.) Then, the three dissect Sorry Not Sorry, a documentary from the New York Times that examines Louis C.K.'s public fall from grace in 2017 and the comic's recent comeback, but disappointingly offers little new insight. Finally, the trio tackles gambling and its increasing presence in modern life, inspired by an essay by Christine Emba for The Atlantic. “Suddenly, gambling seems to be everywhere,” Emba writes. “This sort of vice creep, a societal normalization of what used to be seen as unsavory habits—gambling, smoking marijuana, watching porn—is accelerated by people's addiction to devices, in this case giving casual bettors the tools to become compulsive wagerers and easing the way for gambling to become a constant part of life.”  In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discusses a recent New York Times interactive and dives deep into their relationships with the grocery store. Email us at culturefest@slate.com. Endorsements: Dana: Inspired by today's gambling segment, Dana endorses Owning Mahowny, director Richard Kwietniowski 2003 film based on the true story of a Toronto bank employee (played by Phillip Seymour Hoffman) who embezzled more than $10 million to feed his gambling addiction.  Julia: An open call! Please send Julia your recommendations for great children's books that discuss the weather or the changing seasons to culturefest@slate.com. (And read Tap the Magic Tree by Christie Matheson!) Welcome to The Unlearning Podcast, where we explore the power of trusting our intuition and our journey towards peace and harmony with Reiki Master, Author, and Woodstock Store Owner, Lizzie Reiss. In today's episode, we discuss how to trust your intuition through finding inner peace. We'll explore how the noise of our thoughts can block our ability to hear and listen to the voice of intuition, and we'll discuss practical tips and techniques for quieting the mind and tuning into your inner guidance system. We'll also explore the concept of creating inner harmony, and how our choices can either contribute to or detract from our sense of inner joy and fulfillment. By becoming more aware of our choices and listening to the voice of intuition, we can make choices that align with our true desires and lead us towards greater happiness and fulfillment. We'll also dive into the 4 Clair's - clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, and claircognizance - and how they can help us tap into our intuition and inner guidance. Finally, we'll discuss the importance of listening to the body and how our physical sensations can provide valuable insight and guidance on our path towards happiness and fulfillment. So whether you're looking to deepen your connection to your purpose, cultivate a greater sense of inner joy and fulfillment, or simply explore the power of intuition, this episode has something for you. Please join me for an episode seeped in very grounded magic with Judy Lemon. Judy is a shamanic practitioner and Somatic Experiencing trauma therapist (SEP) who brings years of comprehensive training and knowledge into her work. She has studied and apprenticed with Native and other master teachers in Europe, the United States and throughout Latin America. Judy draws upon her extensive experience with multiple modalities such as energy healing, ceremonial work, and trauma therapy to create an individual plan for each client’s healing and spiritual development. She has just published her first work, a short story called "The Magic Tree," which is part of the anthology, "Crappy to Happy." A full-length memoir, called "Machete Woman," about her days as a shamanic apprentice will be published soon. We discuss her journey within the world of shamanism, what it was like to be a woman in the jungle, and how important staying centered is when working with elemental energy. We also had plenty of time to talk about one of my favorite subjects, Somatic Experiencing, and the very specific ways Judy uses this work in conjunction with her Shamanic practices. This is a wonderful episode that left me feeling expansive and open to magic and wonder. See what it does for you! Crappy to Happy Series- Judy Lemon and Jess CampmansDiane interviews Judy Lemon and Jess Campmans on this powerful episode in the Crappy to Happy Series. Judy's story in the series is the Magic Tree. In this story Judy does a medicine ceremony outside in the jungle of amazon by herself. Judy shares her story about letting go and connecting deeply with herself in the jungle while she performed her own medicine woman ceremony. Judy found the power of her intuition and healing as a shamanic practitioner in the jungle. She went from a life as a rock star to a simple life in the jungle among men. This unique path unveiled her true calling and passion in life. Her powerful story enlightens and inspires us to find our unique path in our lives. You can learn more about her story in her book, "Machete Woman - A tale of Resilience and Rebirth." This book will be published soon. It tells her full story of her shift from rockstar in London to shamanic healer in the Amazon. In the second half of the show, Diane interviews another revolutionary healer Jess Campmans. And Jess and Diane connect in a unique and powerful way as the show progresses. Jess has a magical gift to find peoples untapped potential through her work with horses. She helps people find their passion and purpose by getting messages from the horse's movements. It is so exciting to see that healers get intuitive messages in such unique ways. Interestingly Diane and Jess both experienced digestive issues and back pain when they were holding back on their passion and purpose in life. Jess sees the physiological response from the horses as she works with people. It is so magical to see that there are so many options to find the messages we are missing through alternative treatments. They both agree we can free ourselves from being stuck or frozen by connecting with our intuition, passion and purpose. Diane and Jess both received an intuitive message during the show as technology issues caused the episode to end suddenly. They both realized that they are both holding energies and stress that need to be released. And something amazing happened, when they reconnected Diane and Jess decided to create a new podcast together outdoors in nature using their intuitive gifts with each other. Travel Stories Podcast

Can a traveler have a home base? What does stability mean to an adventurer? Is the push-pull siren call of the two different traveling worlds surmountable? Derek Loudermilk, host of The Art of Adventure, answers all of these questions and more, unprompted and in depth. Derek is a father, a digital nomad, and a traveler who believes in the power of dichotomy and travels with his infant son, Axel. An adventurer and a businessman, Derek seeks to help others who have the elusive dream of becoming location-independent. Between the jungles of Bali, his wife’s nesting abilities, and his location independence set of skills, Derek is never far from home. The Magic Tree Derek Loudermilk’s story takes place in the jungles of central Bali, in one of his favorite regions - in the central highlands, in a place called Bedugul. This space is very primal for him, and he loves to spend time up there to connect with nature, which he believes can make a person more creative, confident, and self-aware. During one afternoon walk in the jungles, Derek experienced a surprising connection with nature: upon entering a clearing with an ancient, massive tree, and placing his hands on the tree, he got an electro-emotional shock. He says the tree was trying to tell him something. When he put his hands on the tree again, it happened a second time, with Derek experiencing a flood of emotions, sweating, and crying. What happened when he was given time alone with the tree would change Derek’s life from thereon out, as well as his work and his further wellbeing. The Best of Both Worlds: Travel Edition Hayden met Derek Loudermilk when they both guested on The Budget-Minded Traveler, and Hayden realized how interesting, curious, and unique he was. Derek has lived on four continents, and he values traveling slowly and getting to know the culture. Derek is a wholehearted believer in the power of music. He and Hayden share their stories on the topic, with Derek giving a bit of insight into his father and different ways to make music on the go. In regards to his father and the rest of his family, Derek remembers the time he spent camping and traveling as a child. His family wanted to travel somewhere new every year when he was young, which led to his love of exploration, which he now wishes to pass onto his infant son, Axel, whom he travels with now. Axel is a zen child who likes to travel, which leads Hayden and Derek to explore the effects of traveling from infancy on a person. Derek believes in showing Axel the best of both worlds. People’s lives can change in a single moment and take them on a new track in life, a new direction, and traveling can help people discover their own self-identity. Saying yes to opportunities can open doors to potential paths, but saying no can create a permanence that allows you stability; this dichotomy, Derek says, is an interesting push-pull that can be necessary to create the life you want to live and to get stuff done. Going on your own hero’s journey and experiencing and learning and growing is a path only you can take for... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/backpackdigital/message
