"There's a gap currently between the way the small startup companies would think about how to get investment dollars and grant dollars to keep their company alive, and what the big operators need to have a deployable project." In this episode, I'm in conversation with Bradley Wamboldt, who is the principal associate of Hawk and Squirrel Innovation. Bradley specialises in helping industrial companies innovate with hard technologies such as new industrial equipment and processes. Innovations in hard technology have strong parallels with soft technology (digital), and hard technology these days is usually accompanied by some kind of digital overlay. "If you look to move to a more distributed energy generation and consumption model, there's going to be a tremendous amount of infrastructure required. We're talking about 20 terawatts of energy used by the planet. Currently, about 85% of that is fossil fuel. So the scale of this energy transition, we're really just starting to scratch the surface." Bradley Wamboldt is the Principal Associate at Hawk & Squirrel Innovation, a boutique consultancy and technology development practice in Calgary. Bradley has over 30 years of experience in oil and gas operations, project development, commissioning, operations, and technology development with both Shell Canada and Suncor Energy. "Every day you go to work you think about three things, and none of them have to do with change. Number one is safety. Safety is always making sure everybody comes home. Number two is how many barrels did you produce today. Number three is keeping the costs in line." He is currently focusing his efforts on assisting large and small companies in advancing new energy transition and decarbonization technologies from research through to commercial deployment. Bradley has a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from McGill University and an MBA (with distinction) from Ivey School of Business at Western University. Here are some of the key questions addressed in the episode: Is there more than one way to roll out industrial infrastructure? What are they? Who is good at introducing change to brownfield infrastructure? What are the key incentives that drive the energy industry? Where should innovation be placed in an organization? Operations? What tactics work well in driving business improvements and disruptive change? What changes do we need to see implemented to accelerate the pace of change? Today, Urmi interviews Mike Moffatt who is the Senior Director of Policy and Innovation at the Smart Prosperity Institute at the University of Ottawa, and Assistant Professor at the Ivey School of Business at Western University, and a leader in housing policy, industry and advocacy circles for many years. He and his team have projected and analyzed other projections of home building needs, most recently finding that Ontario currently needs 1.5 million homes to be built over the next 10 years to meet current gaps and projected demand. How likely is it that Ontario can meet this target? What are the biggest challenges to generating this supply? Will ever higher immigration targets keep supply goals permanently out of reach? And could Canada be becoming a new type of economy facing specific pitfalls? Hitting Your Stride -- The Equestrian Elements Life Coaching podcast with Tracey Mitchell
In this episode of Hitting Your Stride, Dr. Mike Pownall (DVM, MBA) joins Tracey for a spirited discussion on the state of equine veterinary care in the industry and how he as co-owner of McKee-Pownall Equine Services is seeking to change things for the better. This is pretty far from where Mike thought he'd be, having grown up a city kid in Montreal with no interest in horses -- until a thoughtful gift changed his future. Tracey and Mike go through the details of what currently faces vets today: high-stress demands and compassion fatigue have led to some of the most alarmingly high rates of burnout and suicide of any profession. But to help look after those who work for McKee-Pownall and to best serve horse owners and preserve their peace of mind when it comes to healthcare decisions, Mike and his wife, Melissa, have put a focus on creating a culture of 'people first' when it comes to caring for their employees. As with a lot of Tracey's guests, Mike shares that he found his passion for horses when a friend gifted him lessons and he saw it snowball from there. And in going from a Concordia graduate with a degree in communications to a farrier to a vet who sports an MBA from the Ivey School of Business at Western, it's safe to say that his journey has been as varied as it has been inspiring. One of Mike's guiding principles is giving back, acknowledging that so many doors were opened for him along his path that for him to not pay it forward would be a great act of selfishness. Lots of people in the horse industry have had a mentor and someone supporting them, and he considers it an honour to return that supportive experience. And for someone whose life has become a detailed balancing act, Mike points out that you need a clear vision from the start to make your goals become reality. Part of that is showing strength in self-leadership, including both the sense of humility in your service to others and a strong emotional intelligence where you are aware of your impact on others and how that affects your personal growth. McKee-Pownall can be found online at www.mpequine.com.
Kim Shannon, CFA, Founder & Co-CIO, Sionna Investment Managers joined us for deep dive of a fireside chat on her career and perspective as a value manager, investing, inflation, the reflation trade, and why the current leg in the economic cycle is a favourable backdrop for Canadian equities.Kim reflects on her career history – her beginnings as a value manager under the wing of her early mentor at Royal and Sun Alliance, investing legend, John Di Tomasso, in the early 80s. She describes her investing journey, the application of her knowledge and her own proprietary take on value investing, and how she and her associates subsequently turned an old then $40-million AUM fund into Canada's largest equity mutual fund, which earned her the reputation as one of Canada's pre-eminent market wizards. The last ten years however have seen the hollowing out of value fund AUMs against growth and momentum, and Kim Shannon, no stranger to the challenges of competing against the market, candidly admits that it's been a tough go, maintaining her integrity and conviction through the period. Until last year, that is, when value stocks, in the context of a comeback in inflation, began to show the meaningful glimmer of reverting back to historical trend. That glimmer of a reversion to mean in investing styles emerged during last year's re-opening in the context of reflation following the COVID-19 growth shock of 2020.She points out that, "The last 12 years have been the longest period of underperformance of Value, and when Value failed to outperform following the March 2020 bear market, that really affected the psyche of investors about Value." Kim Shannon goes on to add that, "So that really affected client psyche about value because a lot of clients had held in with value because it always defended at a down market."We then discuss valuations on several the last decade's market leaders, and even with a reversion in P/E multiples, Shannon points out that even if P/Es come down to 150 times earnings, their valuations imply that it will take 150 years for those stocks to pay investors back. Most of the darlings of the 1990s run up no longer exist, such as Sun Microsystems, and companies like Cisco and Intel have failed to inspire investors."The average tenure of stocks today is 20 years," explains Shannon. That means that investors are paying up for valuations that will take, in some cases many generations to collect on for companies, that, in most cases, won't be around in 20 years. Our conversation winds through the topics of inflation, value as a reflation trade, value investing, and culminates with her bull case for Canadian stocks. There is also strong likelihood that if if there is a sustained inflation, it will be supportive of Canadian equity valuations. We discuss some of her favoured areas of opportunity and get into some of the names she likes. Her over-arching thesis is that she believes and expects that Canadian stocks are set to outperform U.S. stocks in the period ahead, and we discuss her pro-Canada investment case. Notes: Kim Shannon's reference to George Athanassakos' (Professor at Ivey School of Business - Benjamin Graham School of Value Investing) research findings from last year:What if inflation is here to stay? Think value stocks"We also examined the annual inflation rate above which the value premium became decidedly positive. This inflation rate was approximately 2.5 per cent. Once inflation started to exceed 2.5 per cent, value stocks started to outperform, while growth stocks, in general, did better when inflation was below 2.5 per cent. Between 1930 and 2020, there were 50 years when annual inflation was at or above 2.5 per cent and 40 years when it was below 2.5 per cent. The median value premium in the first period was 11.04 per cent and in the second 2.34 per cent. It's worth noting that it is primarily small-cap value stocks that drive these relationships."*****Where to find Kim Shannon, Founder & Co-CIO, Sionna Investments:Kim Shannon on LinkedinSionna Investments*****Thank you for watching – If you're enjoying Insight is Capital, please subscribe to the podcast at Apple or Google Podcasts, and please do share your thoughts and comments, and ratings.

Hitting Your Stride -- The Equestrian Elements Life Coaching podcast with Tracey Mitchell
Here are just two ideas you will come to embrace after the latest episode of 'Hitting Your Stride': failure is not an ending, and your original idea will not be your final idea. Those are just two notions that Nicole Verkindt shares with Tracey and her listeners in this episode. The Ivey School of Business graduate and one of Canada's leading entrepreneurial voices, Verkindt gives her take on such things as accepting that a horse will teach you to check your ego at the barn door, that you can't control everything no matter how much you try, and that you are going to fail but that's not the end of the journey. Comparing entrepreneurs to lions, Verkindt describes the value she found in mentorship as a young businesswoman and that some of the best stuff happens when it follows an uncomfortable conversation. She says its important to ask for help and collaborate with others, but also to see the importance of sharing ideas when trying to advance a project since nobody can do it alone. Check out Nicole's latest venture by logging on to www.guestlog.co.

If you have been feeling like you’re missing something in your diet and/or have been considering investing in supplements, then you are in for a special treat! In this episode, we chat with the Queen of Algae, Catharine Arnston, about this “super duper food” that does it all - the magical algae. Catharine is the CEO and Founder of ENERGYbits® and has dedicated the last 12 years to bringing Algae to America. We think it’s safe to say that mostly everybody knows they should be eating vegetables. What they might not know is we should actually be eating tons of it everyday. According to the USDA, the average American falls far short of consuming vegetables on a daily basis. That means we are not getting enough nutrients in our bodies. Thanks to Catharine and ENERGYbits®, getting efficient nutrition has never been easier. For example, because algae is so nutrient-dense, you can actually replace the need for veggies (www.energybits.com). That’s only one life-style benefit, but you’ll have to listen to the full episode to hear all of the amazing health benefits algae provides because it is truly mind-blowing how many there are. Catharine is an amazing person and a rockstar entrepreneur. We believe what makes her a strong entrepreneur is her vision and her ‘why’ behind what she does. She is determined to help people live healthier lives naturally and will stop at nothing to bring algae to America! Have you ever written something that you wished you could self-publish? What about your child, niece or nephew? We are all born creative as per Picasso. However, staying creative is the tough part. This week’s guest once worked with me at Ogilvy & Mather in NYC. Amy provides an amazing perspective on creativity. She worked on both the agency and client sides as she explored her own creativity. Listen to how Amy has followed her curiosities when it came to her creativity, decisions on where to live in the world, and how to lead her entrepreneurial journey. About Amy Amy Wong is a proud Canadian, the mother of two rambunctious young daughters, and someone who has turned their love of marketing and entrepreneurship into a 20-year career. This passion has taken her from Toronto to New York to Beijing to Hong Kong. After graduating from the Ivey School of Business in Canada, Amy moved to the Big Apple to break into the advertising industry, an area of study that fascinated her at school. Luckily, a small Asian American agency gave Amy an opportunity to work as an Account Executive where she covered brands such as Citibank and Hennessy. Amy moved to Ogilvy one year later, where she met some of the most brilliant minds in the industry and worked on some of the most high-profile campaigns at the agency, including the launch of IBM Watson on Jeopardy! During those years in New York, Amy became curious with Asia, a place that was experiencing tremendous growth. She convinced my husband to move across the ocean where they spent half a year learning Mandarin at the Beijing Language and Cultural University before moving to Hong Kong. Amy landed a marketing role at Lenovo where she created and launched campaigns for their portfolio of products that ranged from ThinkPad and Yoga Laptops to MOTO smartphones to Star Wars: Jedi Challenges AR devices. Recently, Amy decided to fulfill her lifelong dream of starting a business. Her company is called Dreamwriters, a self-publishing platform for young creative writers and artists. It’s a place where kids of any age (or kids at heart) can write and publish beautiful books of their stories. Amy’s hope is that the platform becomes a foundation for lifelong creative fulfillment. Please share this episode with three parents who wish to cultivate their child’s wonder and reignite their own. If you want to learn how easy it can be to self-publish writing or works of art then tune in! Amy’s platform is a great option! Karen started her company in 1996 and has helped top business leaders and teams from Fortune 500 companies to manage change, increase productivity and achieve success. Featured in the media several times, she is a strategic advisor to startup “Animo” which aims to help employees understand and manage their well-being using Artificial Intelligence. Karen is a Master Certified Coach (MCC) and a past Board member and founder of the Toronto Chapter for the International Coaching Federation. Karen has an MBA in Marketing from the Ivey School and a bachelor's degree in Economics from Western University. Based on her personal and coaching experience, Karen says suffering from burnout most likely happens to “Accidental Alpha women” with the feeling of regular resentment as the first clue. Compared to the “non-accidental” Alpha women who know this is the kind of leadership they want from the get-go, the Accidental Alpha women feel disconnected with tension and frustration around them. Karen says in order for these women to thrive, the first step is to recognize their reality and accept that delegation and asking for help is part of leadership. She says women need to become comfortable with admitting that they are overwhelmed and asking for specific support. She emphasizes that self-leadership is the key to leading with more clarity. She also mentions the importance of planning for the worst scenarios while detaching from the outcome in order to transition into a more rewarding life and career. Maria Sundaram, an infectious disease epidemiologist with I-C-E-S research institute and the University of Toronto talks about 'vaccine hesitancy'; Sofia Rodriguez of CBC London tells us about NameCoach a new tool being tested at the Ivey School of Business at Western University that helps students and professors correctly pronounce names; Doug Cuthand, columnist with the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, discusses Perry Bellegarde's decision to step down as Grand Chief of the Assembly of First Nations; Kimberly Sutherland Mills of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library offers up some suggestions for holiday reading; The Orillia Youth Centre has created the Valis Music Studio to honour an aspiring young rapper Nelson Bell who died in a car accident. We hear from Nelson's sister Leticia Stagg and Kevin Gangloff, the director of the studio.
The fact that Jennifer Jones is the President of The Toronto Library Foundation makes so much sense. Almost like it was meant to be. But the truth is that her path to this incredibly important leadership role was not direct. Rather it was a result of a series of ricochets and unique life experiences. She was raised to be an independent and confident woman and that was put to the test in high school when her parents packed up to live in India while Jennifer stayed behind to begin her adult life. Her search for clarity and meaning led her all over the world and then finally to the Ivey School of Business where she and I met. Her warmth, confidence and sense of humour made an impact on me from day 1. Yet I realize now that I didn't really know her. I am thrilled to have learned more about her in this one hour conversation than I did in two years together at grad school. I know you will enjoy learning from her story in this conversation. Join me and my guest, Bill Bishop, as they talk about the BIG Idea Conversation. Bill is the owner of The BIG Idea Company, which has been around since 1987, helping over 5000 businesses launch ideas into the marketplace. Find out how you can get out of the old factory way of thinking! In this episode, you'll learn: The drive to focus more on virtual businesses in the new factory way of thinking. How most business owners tell the same story about their companies. They define their business on their product! Finding your new niche. Are there businesses that are unable to do that? Can you immediately start on that change your business needs? Learning how to adapt. Something terrible can always happen! ~ About Bill Bishop: In his teenage years, Bill Bishop was dead set against a career in marketing. His parents operated a small marketing company and to save money, they often used Bill as free labor in advertising and PR programs. At the age of six, he was cast as "The OFF Boy" in a series of commercials for the famous insect repellant. At age 14, they dressed him up in a frog outfit to promote a local retail mall, followed by a humiliating stint in a pink bunny suit. These indignities, along with many others, made Bill swear he would never pursue marketing as a career. Yet, in his early 20s, Bill was thrust back into the marketing world when he won a waiter contest by selling 1,400 lobsters. This seminal event was so inspiring and lucrative that Bill concluded he actually loved marketing and decided to start his own marketing company. Since that time, Bill and his team of coaches have helped more than 10,000 entrepreneurs in dozens of industries around the world develop and market innovative BIG Ideas. Today, Bill is the CEO of The BIG Idea Company and the creator of The BIG Idea Adventure™, an advanced coaching program that helps entrepreneurs grow their business by creating, packaging, and promoting BIG Ideas. He is also the founder of The New Economy Network, and the inventor of the popular board game Quibberish®: The Paraphrase Puzzle Game. In addition, Bill is the author of nine books including How To Sell A Lobster (now sold in 25 countries in 12 languages), The Problem With Penguins, Beyond Basketballs, Return of The Lobster, and Global Marketing For The Digital Age. He was also the author of Strategic Marketing For The Digital Age (1996), the first book published about e-commerce and Internet marketing. He recently published his new book The New Factory Thinker: Re-Wire Your Mind For Success In A Disrupted Marketplace. He also published Going To The Net, a book about using psychology and mindfulness to excel at tennis and life. Bill has delivered speeches to hundreds of organizations including The MIT Entrepreneur Program, TEC, Entrepreneur's Organization (EO), Advocis, The Knowledge Bureau, MDRT, NAIFA, NAPFA, Independent Financial Brokers, Workcomp Advisors, Pro-Seminars, BNI, The Ivey School of Business, The Schulich School of Business, and Queen's University Executive MBA Program. ~ BIG IDEA THINGS YOU CAN DO 1. Elle Russ chats with Catharine Arnston - the CEO & Founder of ENERGYbits®. Her mission is to help the world be healthier naturally with mother nature’s oldest and original food- algae. Catharine graduated with an MBA from Ivey School of Business and a Health Coach Certificate from Institute of Integrative Nutrition. Her career spans thirty-three years during which she has been an international attaché for the Canadian and British Governments, publisher of an international magazine and the Founder of three startups. Catharine founded the algae tablet company ENERGYbits® in Boston MA after her younger sister in Canada was diagnosed with breast cancer and advised by her oncologist that an alkaline diet would help her heal. Catharine helped her sister research alkaline foods and the process led her to discover the healing properties of plant-based nutrition. This ultimately led Catharine to algae, the most nutrient-dense, alkaline plant in the world with vast medicinal properties unknown outside of Asia. Catharine realized algae could have a powerful impact on the world if it was only better understood. Tom McCullough is Chairman and CEO of Northwood Family Office. He has spent over 35 years in the wealth management/family office field, initially in senior executive roles with RBC Wealth Management. The combination of this background, along with his own family’s desire for a truly ‘comprehensive, customized and confidential’ service, led him on a search for a multi-family office. While multi-family offices are well-developed in the U.S. and growing rapidly as wealthy families seek out objective advice and boutique-style service, they were virtually non-existent in Canada. In 2003, this led Tom to start Northwood Family Office with partner Scott Hayman. Northwood Family Office has quickly become one of the leaders in its field and has consistently been recognized as the ‘#1 independent family office in Canada’ by Euromoney in its global private banking survey. Tom is a frequent speaker on issues relevant to families of wealth and is the co-author of Wealth of Wisdom: The Top 50 Questions Wealthy Families Ask and Family Wealth Management: 7 Imperatives for Successful Investing in the New World Order. He is an Adjunct Professor and Executive-in-Residence at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management MBA program where he teaches ‘The Management of Private Wealth’, and is a faculty member in Rotman’s Family Wealth Management program for families of wealth. He is an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Western University’s Ivey School of Business and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Wealth Management. He is also a Fellow of the Family Firm Institute (FFI) and holds an Advanced Certificate in Family Business Advising from FFI. Tom holds an MBA from the Schulich School of Business at York University, as well as the CIM (Chartered Investment Manager) and CIWM (Certified International Wealth Manager) designations, and is a registered Portfolio Manager. He is married, has two adult children and is actively involved in a wide range of philanthropic and community activities, most notably education and poverty alleviation in the developing world. Tom also serves on the board of The Bentway Conservancy, a new 1.75 km urban public park and performance space underneath Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/algae2 My guest on today's podcast is Catharine Arnston, and she puts my own algae consumption to shame, eating 75 pieces of chlorella and 75 pieces of spirulina every day. She holds an MBA from Western’s Ivey School of Business, and a BA in geography and economic development from Queen’s University. She is a Board Certified Health Counselor from and a REIKI Master. She is also an algae expert and the CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of ENERGYbits, a sports nutrition company that sells algae in tablet form to athletes and consumers (). Catharine founded ENERGYbits eight years ago after she became aware of the health and athletic benefits of a plant based diet. When she subsequently learned that algae was the most nutrient dense plant in the world and that Asians had been growing it and benefiting from it for fifty years, she made it her life mission to bring algae into the mainstream so others could benefit from this superfood too. You may also recognize Catharine from ! Anyways, Catharine makes the bold claim that a lack of chlorophyll (greens) in diet leads to the ten different leading causes of aging and disease worldwide. -What is chlorophyll? [10:50] . It is the substance that is responsible for photosynthesis – the usage of light energy from the sun to convert water & carbon dioxide into nutrition (glucose) for the plants. What foods are high in chlorophyll? Green foods! The darker the green, the more chlorophyll. In fact, algae has the highest concentration of chlorophyll in the world, containing 100-1000 times more chlorophyll than any other plant or vegetable (50 times more than wheat grass). Chlorophyll is a phytonutrient that oxygenates & detoxifies the blood. It is rich in enzymes and high in amino acids. It alkalizes the body, is anti-inflammatory, is an antioxidant, chelates heavy metals, been shown to repair damaged DNA and speed up the healing process of wounds. It even helps mitochondria ATP with a fuel source that is cleaner than glucose (with the addition of sunshine). The structure of chlorophyll is nearly identical to that of hemoglobin in our blood. The center atom of chlorophyll is magnesium (green) while the center atom of hemoglobin is iron (red). Magnesium is what helps alkalize the body and deliver oxygen to cells & tissues. Chlorophyll helps promote the formation of hemoglobin and red blood cells. In my article and my podcast I introduce chlorophyll, but in today's show, Catharine and I take a deep dive into how chlorophyll intake can manage everything from excess acidity to inflammation to accelerated aging and beyond. During our discussion, you'll discover a host of new information (and a big credit to Catharine for gathering the research presented in the comprehensive shownotes below!): -How algae can reduce cellular inflammation due to its high concentration of essential fatty acids, alkaline composition and high concentration of antioxidants, including the three primary precursors to the body’s most important antioxidants – glutathione (cysteine, glycine and glutamine)...[18:00] Inflammation References: Journal of Medicinal Food Feb 16 2013 - Health Benefits of Blue-Green Algae: Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease -How algae affects damaged and decreased mitochondria, particularly via Superoxide Dismutase in spirulina...[21:55] Mitochondrial References: -Why you should care about ATP production in relation to disease and aging, and what effect does algae has on it...[26:40] ATP References: -The fascinating link between algae and cancer, and how spirulina and chlorella can reduce the growth of cancer cells...[32:25] Cancer References: -How algae affects free radical and antioxidant production by increasing levels of both water soluble and fat soluble antioxidants...[42:35] Antioxidant References: -The actual scientific link between algae and detoxification...[47:00] Detoxification References: -How algae affects the immune system by stimulating production of T-cells and anti-inflammatory cytokines...[51:55] Immune References: -Why you should care about your cell membranes, what algae does for them, and why algae is a perfect plant-based alternative to fish oil...[60:05] Cell Membrane References: -The anti-aging link between algae, IGF-1 and Mtor...[67:30] References: Resources from this episode: [pdf-embedder url="https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/1.-chlorophyll-content-in-ENERGYbits-sprirulina-and-RECOVERYbits-chlorella-compared-to-other-vegetables.pdf" title="Chlorophyll Content In ENERGYbits Spirulina & RECOVERYbits Chlorella Compared To Other Vegetables"] Show Sponsors: -biOptimizers – Crank your muscle gains to new heights by flooding your muscles with maximal amino acids without increasing your protein intake by a single gram. Every morning I put about thirty tiny spirulina algae tablets on top of my morning smoothie. Then, in the evening, I often swallow another handful of tiny chlorella tablets to satiate my appetite. After that, I have to rinse out my mouth with water if I want my wife to kiss me, but it's all worth it because... ...regardless of whether you think that us land-dwelling creatures at some point evolved from ocean-dwelling life (), it can’t be denied that fish, turtles, and millions of other large and small inhabitants of water rely on one extremely dense nutrition source for sustenance of life… …algae – particularly from spirulina and chlorella sources. And (especially for vegans and vegetarians), it is the only way to get absorbable, brain-building DHA from a plant-based source. Chia seeds and flax seeds don't get converted into DHA. Algae has 40 vitamins and minerals, more protein then steak, more iron than liver, more calcium than milk, more chlorophyll than kale, more antioxidants than berries and provides so much steady energy and focus, that your performance improves all without chemicals, caffeine, sugar, gluten, soy, animal products or stomach distress. Algae is also an eco-friendly, sustainable crop that releases oxygen while it is growing, produces 100 times more protein per acre than beef and provides the safest, vegan, source of Omega 3. It is grown in fresh water tanks, not the ocean so it protects the ocean’s ecosystem too. And there's only one calorie in a single tab. My guest on today's podcast is Catharine Arnston, and she puts my own algae consumption to shame, eating 75 pieces of chlorella and 75 pieces of spirulina every day.
