Happy holidays! This is a rerun of an episode we published back in March 2023, but this topic has been getting a lot of discussion again recently so we wanted to revisit it! MOPs & MOEs merch is now for sale on our website! Check out the shop for tees, hoodies, stickers, and more. Job Fransen is a skill acquisition specialist working at the University Medical Centre Groningen in the Netherlands and an adjunct fellow at the University of Technology Sydney's School of Sport, Exercise, and Rehabilitation. His research focuses on optimizing skill acquisition in athletes. He has worked with high-performance athletes and individuals from around the world, across elite sport, esports and gaming, and the military. Job is also a skill acquisition consultant, assisting some of the world's best coaches to design practice that optimizes learning across a range of sports, most notably rugby, Australian football, soccer, and basketball. We discovered Job's work because of a preprint article he released that provides extensively resourced evidence to argue two main points: A far transfer of skills is something we all think we do yet it is very difficult to achieve. Instead, we mostly achieve near transfers of skills between very similar or related tasks. Cognitive training is evidenced not to have a far transfer in robust scientific research in psychology, yet numerous tech companies claim to have the ‘next best cognitive or perceptual training tool' for improving sports performance while these transfers are exceptionally difficult to achieve and there is no evidence these tools can even achieve them. In this episode, we start off by defining the concepts of "near transfer" and "far transfer" and then set off on a wide-ranging conversation about how to better deliver actual evidence-based cognitive training. We address the heated debate among researchers in this space, critique some of the popular technologies, and arrive at some pretty valuable insights on how to integrate skill acquisition principles into the ways we train, such as the optimal challenge point model. If this is a topic that excites you, you're in luck. Both ahead of and during our conversation Job pointed us toward a wealth of resources. Quick Tips: Apps and Activities for People with Dementia

Today, we are talking about a few apps and websites that are helping people with dementia keep their brains active. In previous episodes, we've talked about how an active brain can potentially slow the progression of Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. If you are interested in learning more about this, visit our website for more information. We are going to be highlighting a few options we have found that you and your loved one may want to explore. Now let's move on to the rest of the show.   An active brain can help slow the progress of dementia and other memory-impairing diseases. Doing daily exercises may help a person with dementia recall memories longer. One easy way to keep your brain active is by using the technology around you. In today's world, we can access almost anything using a smartphone or computer, so why not use technology to help people with dementia?   The majority of people with Alzheimer's or other dementias today are over 65. Many of these individuals are not what you would call tech-savvy, but many apps and websites today are designed specifically for seniors with dementia. They are easy to use and engaging.   The first app we want to tell you about today is called MindMate. It was created by three volunteer caregivers, Patrick, Suzanne, and Roger. The three have said they created MindMate because “Watching people we cared for succumb to memory loss left us with the belief that there must be something we can do to help the ones we love. Why weren't there any tools to help care for those with Alzheimer's and Dementia and keep caregivers sane?”   According to MindMate.com, united in their dedication to creating more resources, the three decided to develop a mobile app for other caregivers like themselves. With the help of Dr. Terry Quinn from the University of Glasgow's Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences, the team began to translate contemporary research in Dementia care into an actionable, digital platform. Based on this research, the MindMate App was born.   Estate Planning and Elder Law Services says that this free app, available for Apple, Android, and computers, offers brain games and workouts to help with attention, memory, problem-solving, and cognitive speed. MindMate also features other tools to stimulate brain and general health, promoting good nutrition, physical exercise, mental stimulation, and social interaction. The site allows you to take a memory test online and promptly emails you your results.   Another app similar to MindMate that you may be familiar with is Lumosity. It is one of the earlier brain-training apps in the market and there's a reason that it is still widely used today.   According to Lumosity, there have been over 20 peer-reviewed publications in academic journals using Lumosity games or assessments. In one study, our scientists conducted a randomized trial involving 4,715 participants in order to study whether cognitive performance improves after training with Lumosity. The test group trained with Lumosity, while the control group trained using crossword puzzles. Both groups trained five days per week, for fifteen minutes a day.   After ten weeks, the Lumosity group improved in performance across a battery of cognitive assessments. In fact, they improved more than twice as much as the control group did.* More specifically, the Lumosity group showed statistically significant improvements on subtests of working memory, arithmetic reasoning, and processing speed.   There is a free version of the app, or you can pay $11.95 a month to have access to all that the app offers.   Another unique app we came across is the Spaced Retrieval App by Tactus Therapy. Tactus Therapy explains that this Spaced Retrieval Therapy app uses the scientifically proven method of spaced retrieval training to help people with dementia or other memory impairments to recall important information. Recalling an answer over multiplying intervals of time, such as 1 minute, 2 minutes, 8 minutes, and so on, helps to cement the information in memory.   Spaced Retrieval Therapy is an enhanced interval timer with independent data tracking and prompts. It automatically increases the time between prompts with correct responses and decreases it with incorrect ones. This app will help clinicians, family members, and students keep track of the intervals and performance as they practice up to 3 memory targets.   This app is specifically geared towards helping people with dementia remember new information longer. The app requires a one-time payment of $4.99.   Communication and strengthening existing social connections and relationships can help improve someone with dementia's overall health. Many people with dementia want to maintain their relationships, but find themselves pulling away from their loved ones because they may not be able to easily follow conversations or stress over what others will think of them after a dementia diagnosis.   According to the creators of AmuseIT, isolation can be a problem for those living with dementia, and it can be difficult for those who care for them to know how to engage.   AmuseIT is an app designed to promote conversation. It contains over 1000 simple quiz questions with a strong visual component.   In addition to facilitating connection between dementia patients and caregivers who use the app, AmuseIT stimulates memory and reasoning and is easy to use, even for those intimidated by technology. You can buy the app for $3.49.   Your loved one may repeatedly call you or others as their disease progresses. Someone with dementia may not remember calling you only two minutes prior and call you several times. If your loved one is in a care facility and is having trouble adjusting to a new environment, they may also want to call you repeatedly and become agitated when they are unable to talk with you.   According to Estate Planning and Elder Law Services, Alz Calls is a chatbot designed for patients who repeatedly ask for their family, struggle with transitions to new environments, or need social interaction. Family members can record their voice, add a photo that will pop up for the patient to recognize, and answer frequent questions so that the patient can have an interactive conversation when the caregiver is not available to talk.   You can record yourself saying numerous phrases by following prompts provided by Alz Calls or making them yourself. A caregiver will help your loved one use the patient side of Alz Calls and will respond to their calls using your recordings. You have full access to all calls that your loved one makes through Alz Calls. Recordings are stored for two weeks at a time.   One therapy app that we are interested in is Constant Therapy. Constant Therapy Health talks about their app, saying that by combining AI and real-world evidence in our easy-to-use app, we're delivering clinically proven, personalized brain exercises that can help people reignite their cognitive, speech, and language abilities. And we're continuously optimizing the world's understanding of the factors contributing to brain health so that we can serve people across a range of neurological conditions.   You can use the app on your own or with a clinician. The app is $24.99 a month but has a yearly option that includes an Amazon tablet, too.   The last thing we want to bring up today is a website called MEternally. This website is best suited for those that are not used to technology and would rather participate in offline activities. MEternally offers activity cards, videos, games, and other physical products that help people with dementia connect and reminisce with those around them.   MEternally tells us that they believe that our mix of life experiences, professional expertise and willingness to speak honestly about dementia, creates an environment where we are able to create products that are meaningful and thoughtful. Our own personal experiences with family members affected by Alzheimer's, Huntington's and Parkinson's Diseases reinforces our personal commitment to not just those with diagnosis of one of these horrific diseases but to those with other forms of dementia.   Reminiscence benefits not only those with dementia. When we tell people about our lives, we are sharing our history and our identity. By viewing photo collections we initiate conversations about our favorite things and share our life stories with others. This allows us to reflect on the things and people in our present and past. By doing so we are preserving and sharing our history and reflecting on our worth and the importance of our own existence.   If you would like to learn more about any of the apps or websites we talked about today, visit our show notes for the resources we used today. Digital brain training programs don't work! Our mental capacity is already being diminished due to our increasing dependence on digital interfaces which take over the work our brains use to become “stronger”. Studies have repeatedly shown that digital based brain training programs like Lumosity produce minimal real world benefits and an overload of digital interfaces over time can create a condition neuroscientists call “digital dementia” because they only stimulate the left side of the brain, eventually resulting in loss of focus and memory. In this live event, let's discuss with John Kennedy (Primary Neuroplastician), Jimmy Quinn (IOSH President) and Ed Thomas (Security Specialist) the fascinating subject of Neuroplasticity. Welcome to Greg’s Newsletter. Great news! You can now listen to the audio version on Spotify, in addition to Apple Podcasts. Either click those links or search for “Greg’s Newsletter,” hit subscribe, and you should be golden. I have a pretty bad memory. I could probably stand to actively combat that with, I don’t know, some Lumosity courses or some other miracle app. Instead, I’ll probably just continue to think about the future and reflect on the past, while misremembering specifics and largely forgetting the present.(That sounded bleaker than it actually is. I like to think about how things are going to be. Does that make me an optimist? I have no idea.)But: $37.89. I remember that number, that dollar amount. I can barely remember my own birthday, but I can rattle off $37.89 with the quickness. It’s what Steve, my lawn guy, charges me everytime he and his crew come over. I’ve interacted him with him in person once, for about 3 minutes, and otherwise our relationship consists of him texting me (he’s “Steve Lawn” in my contacts) with “Planning to do yard tomorrow. OK?” to which I respond “yep. thanks” and then I send him $37.89 in a private transaction through Venmo. This has emerged as just about the only thing I’ve used Venmo for since 2019, but each time I open the app, I’m both flabbergasted and appalled. Flabbergasted at how many people I “know” (more about that in a second) who are still posting public notes and transactions, and appalled at how Venmo so cleverly hijacked everybody’s social graph and contacts list.I’m not sure if Venmo still does this—probably—but at least when I signed up however many years ago, I think it leveraged my Facebook account to find people I knew, which (for some godforsaken reason) I did and clearly so did a lot of other people I know. I recently started batch unfriending people and so what was a “friend” list of 500 has been reducing over time. (Really I should just nuke the account, start over, and then friend Steve Lawn and call it a day.)But before I continue the unfriending, I want to document and share the transactions—and who those transactions are from—to illustrate how WILD it is that we all let a financial services app get access to our social graph AND THEN ALSO MAKE THE TRANSACTIONS PUBLIC, BY DEFAULT.Here are some transactions posted in the past week:A friend of my younger brother who I haven’t seen or interacted with in 10 years charged somebody for “Excellent drinks” (this was a public transaction)The sister of a former colleague who I was barely friends with but I think one time we all hung out in a big group somewhere and became Facebook friends, and haven’t seen in 8 years paid somebody for wine (this was seen by friends only)The sister called out above paid her sister, the former colleague, for pizza (friends only)An acquaintance from high school who I don’t think I’ve seen since high school paid somebody for “Kids & Lease” (public)A former colleague’s mom gave her son money for his birthday (friends)A friend charged his wife of several years some dollar amount and used the house emoji (public)Someone who works in media sales in Detroit, who I worked on a project with once in 2014, paid somebody and used the heart emoji (public)None of these transactions are weird, embarrassing, or egregious in any way. And this is not a value judgement on Venmo's role in peoples' lives. I get that it's made sending money to people easier and been a boon for various people and their businesses—like my guy Steve! But I’m asking myself: why in the ever-loving hell do I need to see these transactions? I mean, there’s like 5% of me that wants to keep these folks as friends for some good old fashioned social media espionage purposes, but… nah. Too much.I know one interpretation of what I just laid out could be “old man yells at cloud” and yeah, you know, you might be right. But I guess my main point is just how f*****g wild it is that Venmo bamboozled millions of people into syncing their phone books or Facebook accounts to a FINANCIAL SERVICES APP. A social network built around so many folks posting PUBLIC TRANSACTIONS when many won't even post stuff on Facebook or they keep their Instagram profiles locked down.“Twitter? Ugh. Why would I want to share my thoughts in public” - probably 40% of people who are on Venmo, and who are sharing their transactions in public on Venmo. What a wild venn diagram that is.Anyways! I'm just going to keep unfriending people and sending that $37.89 privately every week. And also please get off my lawn. Steve just cut it. Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning

Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, for Brain Fact Friday and episode #122. This week we interviewed Paul Zientarski,[i] the former PE teacher from Naperville Central High School, who reinvented physical education using the understanding of simple neuroscience. Then last week’s interview with Dr. John Ratey,[ii] and his book Spark, cemented the idea of the profound impact that exercise has on our cognitive abilities and mental health. Paul Zientarski said many things that caught my attention in the interview and took me by surprise especially with the whole idea of their Zero Hour PE creating such noticeable results with students in the classroom, and even going on to inspire some student to become PE teachers in the future. I thought what their research uncovered at Naperville was important enough to reinforce and take a closer look at why those students at Naperville scored so high on their tests after they took this NEW Physical Education class that blended aerobic activity with an understanding of neuroscience.  If you haven’t listened to Dr. Ratey’s episode #116, or Paul Zientarski on #121, be sure to go back and listen after this brain fact. BRAIN FACT: Aerobic activity can transform not only the body, but also the mind. Dr. Ratey said it clearly in his book Spark when he said that “aerobic activity has a dramatic effect on adaptation, regulating systems that might be out of balance and optimizing those that are not—it’s an indispensable tool for anyone who wants to reach his or her full potential.” (Spark, Page 10). By now we all know that exercise increases brain activity, and that the benefits of exercise “come directly from its ability to reduce insulin resistance, reduce inflammation, and stimulate the release of growth factors—chemicals in the brain that affect the health of brain cells, the growth of new blood vessels in the brain, and even the abundance and survival of new brain cells.”[iii] Dr. Chuck Hillman[iv], from the University of IL (now at Northeastern University) conducted a series of brain scans on students and showed what their brain activity looked like after sitting quietly (not much color if you look at the images in the show notes) vs how vibrant the brain looks after even a 20-minute walk. Without knowing anything about fMRI scans, one look at how the brain lights up after exercise, and we all can come to the same conclusion. “Exercise primes the brain, putting it in the right environment for learning.” Hillman took his research a bit further, and divided students (aged 9/10) into 2 groups. Higher fit (if they could run 0.25 miles without stopping) and lower fit if they had to stop in this 0.25 mile run. The students were asked to take a test similar to what you would find on Lumosity.com and the brains of the higher fit students lit up during the easy test, showing more red color (more brain activity) than the lower fit students. The most noticeable difference was during the difficult test, the brains of the higher fit students lit up bright red, showing the increase of brain activity they had access to, and the lower fit students just didn’t have enough brain power during the difficult test. This study clearly shows how the power of exercise and being physically impacts our brain and cognition. Hillman went another step further with his research and created a 9-month intervention PE program, taught by future PE teachers. Half of the students had an hour of PE prior to their school day, and half didn’t attend the PE program. They went straight to school (they called them the wait list group). The brain scans of the one-hour PE group showed a significant increase of brain activity compared to the students who did not take this extra hour of PE each day. If you are listening to this podcast, I am sure that this will get you as excited as Paul Zientarski was when he first saw these results, and what made Dr. John Ratey jump on an airplane when Naperville scored so high on those tests, using this strategy. “Many studies have suggested that the parts of the brain that control thinking and memory (the prefrontal cortex and medial temporal cortex) have greater volume in people who exercise versus people who don’t.”[v] How Can You Implement This Brain Fact in Your Life? Whether you are an educator working in the classroom, or an employee working in the corporate world, this concept can be easily implemented to get you into a state of heightened awareness before learning, or before you need to sit and work for long periods of time at your desk. START WITH WALKING: If you have something important you need to work on, go for a walk ahead of time, to activate and prime your brain for the focused attention it will need. Hillman’s study showed it only took 20 minutes of walking to light up the brain. How much physical activity would you need to do to impact your memory? Standard recommendations advise “half an hour of moderate physical activity most days of the week, or at least 150 minutes a week.”[vi] START YOUR OWN MOVEMENT: If you want to take advantage of this concept and work in a school, share Paul Zeintarski’s[vii] podcast with your site administrator, and see how you can spearhead a movement of neuroscience in your school.  Watch episode #3 with Ron Hall, from Valley Day School on “Launching a Neuroeducational Program in Your School.”[viii] LEARN FROM OTHERS WHO HAVE PAVED THE WAY: If starting an exercise program seems too much, start doing some research to see how other people began theirs. I loved seeing the story of the Dallas Stars Executive, Tom Holy, who lost almost 100 pounds from starting a walking routine every night.[ix] What started for Holy with just 3 mile walks a day, at the beginning of COVID turned into walking 26.2 miles in a day, and over 100 miles in a week.  He began inspiring his neighbors to do the same, and health really is infectious. Everyone wants to help or motivate each other. MEASURE YOUR HEART RATE: It was adding the heart rate monitors into the game that really made the difference for Naperville students. To experience the best results with their Zero Hour PE, Paul Zientarsky explained that they had to measure the student’s heart rates during exercise and they needed to get their heart rate into the Peak Heart Zone Range of over 150 beats per minute, for at least 20 minutes. Of course, after I heard this, I looked at my workouts the past few months and noticed that although I exercise a lot, I’m very rarely in that Peak Heart Zone Range, unless I’m running. If we want to experience the benefits to our brain, we must put in the effort for this to occur. I hope you have enjoyed diving a bit deeper into what exactly exercise does to the brain. As brain scan technology improves and advances, I know we will have more questions answered, and more strategies to implement for our brain health and well-being. Your brain... are you using it or losing it? When life's odometer starts stacking up the miles, one place we often notice the "wear and tear" is between our ears. "Senior moments" and "brain farts" happen more often, and can be embarrassing. We'll laugh it off and call it normal aging, but it's not "normal." And YOU don't have to live with it. In this episode, we'll talk about the advantages of exercising your brain, like a better memory, improved multi-tasking abilities, and better recall with words and names. Brain "workouts" can even put you in a better mood! To give your brain some "exercise," check out these sites... Lumosity.com Duolingo.com Download.

Sometimes it's hard to say what you mean. Oren Jay Sofer says, "Communication is a learnable skill and it's one of the most powerful levers for making change in your life and the world." Non-violent communication is about taking responsibility for what we are experiencing using empathy, deep listening, know how to make requests. Author and renowned meditation instructor Oren Jay Sofer regularly teaches a mindful approach to non-violent communication. spent two and a half years of living as an Anagarika (renunciate) at branch monasteries in the Ajahn Chah Thai Forest lineage. Today, his teaching combines classical Buddhist training with the accessible language of secular mindfulness.  Since the early 2000s, Oren has had a deep interest in the relationship between contemplative practice and communication. A graduate of the BayNVC North American Leadership Training, he has taught classes and workshops in Marshall Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication (NVC) nationally since 2006. His innovative retreats and online programs in Mindful Communication offer one of the only opportunities in the U.S today to explore the intersection between formal meditation practice, Right Speech and NVC.  Oren  is the founder and Guiding Teacher of Next Step Dharma, an innovative online course focused on bringing the tools of meditation to daily life, and co-founder of Mindful Healthcare.  Oren has created mindfulness programs for organizations, companies, and apps including Apple, Kaiser Permanente, Lumosity, Calm, 10% Happier, Simple Habit and others. I loved his book, Say What You Mean: A Mindful Approach to Nonviolent Communication.  In the book, a main theme is that every thought or feeling is there to try to meet a need.  If you can try to figure out what need your thoughts are tied to, it's easier to articulate what you need to those around you.  It's also useful when listening to someone in a disucssion or conflict to tease out what need they are trying to have met.  I also enjoyed learning about conflict and viewing it as a way to deepen relationships. I also learned that non-violent communication and conflict resolution isn't necessarily to try to get someone to do things your way, it's about deepening understanding of one another because sometimes we simply can't agree to have the same viewpoint.   Non-violent communication has a framework of observation, the feeling, the needs and values to be met, and the request. Three questions you can ask yourself are what happened, how do I feel about it, and why? I also loved learning about how to use mindfulness in listening and communication as well as how to ground yourself in your own body when tensions rise. Topics Discussed in the Podcast  from childhood actor to meditation instructor 4 types of conflict avoidance self-empathy tools for internal pressure No mud, no lotus addressing the voiceless and gender constructs how to make requests of others Listen Now   Resources Oren Jay Sofer's website Get Oren's book: Say What You Mean: A Mindful Approach to Nonviolent Communication     __________________________________ 2 Ways to Give Back to the Show     ________________________________________________   Don't Miss an Episode: Subscribe!

By zadbać o mózg, warto mózg ćwiczyć. Do nauki języka polecam Duolingo i Memorise. Do ćwiczeń pobudzających logiczne myślenie, koncentrację i pamięć Peak oraz Lumosity. Bardzo ważne jest rozwijanie się w liczeniu. Do tego polecam Sudoku.com i Elevate. Jeśli chcesz się rozwijać w niekonwencjonalnym rozwiązywaniu zadań i problemów, polecam Enigmbox i TrickyTest2. Rozwiniesz widzenie przestrzenne, gdy rozwiążesz kilka kart w aplikacji Mekorama.

Can you really use games to increase your brain power?  Every day we are bombarded with messages that suggest we can.  AARP offers their members (all seniors) a discount on the Posit Science "brain fitness" program.  Lumosity ads exort us to "challenge your brain with scientifically designed training.  According to their website, the program is designed by neuroscientists.  A quick trip to Amazon yields dozens of books all claiming to help you increase your brain power.   To explore what is fact and what is wishful thinking,  Pat Salber, MD (@docweighsin) talks to Dov Michaeli, MD, PhD (@dovmichaeli) to get his perspective on increasing brain power. Can it be done? Do games work?  If so any specific types of games?  If not, what else can we do to maintain or regain lost functioning.  This should be a fascinating discussion. If you want to ask Dr. Michaeli questions, please call in on  347-989-8028 at about minute 15.
