In this episode, Lisa and Andy discuss:Why some universities require students to apply directly to a major and how that affects admission chances. How demand, faculty, and resources impact the number of students accepted into certain majors (like Computer Science).Understanding why some programs aren't open for major changes later, making the first choice critical. When can your teen choose a second college major. What to ask during campus visits to understand how majors shape admissions and graduation timelines.Key Takeaways: There is a school that is the right fit for every student, and it will take some research. Universities and colleges have institutional priorities, including where students are applying from and what major they are applying for. Trying to “game” admissions with a different major first often backfires.Colleges are looking for future, happy alumni who can get a degree in a program that they're interested in and move on to talk about great things that they did at the university.Highly competitive programs (often called restricted majors) are not available to transfer into after admissions. "I don't like denying students; I want to find students who are most likely to do well on our campus and who are most likely to be impacted by admission to our institution." – Andy BorstAbout Andy Borst:Andy Borst is the Vice Provost for Enrollment Management at the University of Georgia (UGA). Formerly, when he was on our podcast, he was the Director of Undergraduate Admissions at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, responsible for recruiting, admitting, and enrolling new freshmen and transfer students. Although it can sometimes seem like it, admissions officers aren't in the business of crushing your teen's dreams. They want to make things possible for as many students as possible, and that's where a college major-based admissions process can come into play. Each university can only accommodate a certain number of students in each program, so this type of application can help admissions staff focus on the students that are truly interested in the major and most likely to thrive. When it comes to schools that admit by major, you might be surprised to learn that certain majors at these schools might be restricted to your student applying only as a 12th grader. For instance, if your child wants to study Computer Science at UIUC, they can only be admitted as a freshman or a transfer from another school. Your student must work in high school to identify a college major that aligns with their wiring. Andy warns not to try to take a shortcut into these highly competitive majors by applying for a different major in the hopes of transferring into your student's desired field later. Trying to game the system isn't wise. In these cases, your teen will be better off attending a different university where they have an assured start in their top choice major.Of course, this kind of application process can feel unfair to your high schooler who is just on the cusp of adulthood. That's where the Flourish Coaching course Launch Career Clarity comes in. Our online course with live support aims to help your teen discover the right college major, so your teen finds the right college and has more favorable outcomes. Highlights What is college admission by majorWhat majors are among the most popular and, therefore most competitiveHow do restricted majors eliminate options for many high school studentsWhen can your teen choose a second college majorQuestion to ask colleges about admission by majorAbout Andy Borst:Andy Borst is the Director of Undergraduate Admissions with responsibility for recruiting, admitting, and enrolling new freshmen and new transfer students to the university. On this episode of My Disney Class Podcast, Ryan and Howie welcome back to the record-setting third time, Professor Jerry Johnson from Buena Vista University. Jerry is not only a recurring guest on this show, but both Howie and Ryan are honored to call him a true friend. Want to know more about the incredible things Jerry is doing in his University classes? Check out Episode 13 in season 1 where we first interviewed Jerry and shared the magic he’s making for his students at Buena Vista! Today, Jerry has come on to talk about a very special passion project that he has been working on with students for three and a half years. This project is something that both Ryan and Howie had not even heard about in all their Disney research, so both of them were highly intrigued to hear more. The project is a documentary called, “Growing Magic: The Mickey Mouse Cornfield Story.” Jerry and his students’ story starts when they took a two-hour trip to investigate the place were this cornfield Mickey was created. Though it has long disappeared, 1988, Jerry and his students found through talking to some locals, that were around then, they may be onto a very special story. So, on their van ride home, they decided to start this journey of creating a documentary. After years of work and thirty plus different students lending their specialized skills, “Growing Magic: The Mickey Mouse Cornfield Story” is ready to premiere. The debut will happen March 28th at Buena Vista University with many other screenings happening across the country, including one near Anaheim CA. If you have a chance to catch this film, we really think you will enjoy it. Not only for the stories and Disney history that was captured by Jerry and his students, but also because of the passion and hard work that is evident in this production. We know Walt would give it a “Yeah, that’ll work!”

As a passionate educator, he has rich history in media and media development. He continues to work in media as an assistant professor of digital media at Buena Vista University. It was here that Jerry teamed up with Henry Hardt professor of business law and finance. Together they designed and developed a course titled “Storytelling with Walt Disney.” This soon grew to include a travel portion of the course where students traveled for two weeks with Jerry to learn on Walt Disney World property from actual Walt Disney World Cast members. In the inaugural episode of the BVU Wrestling BeaverCast, we'll introduce Buena Vista University head wrestling coach Jeff Breese and get his take on his first season in Storm Lake. The idea behind this podcast is to give fans, parents and alumni of Buena Vista an insight into the program and the process of bringing the wrestling program back to national prominence in Division III and the fight for supremacy in the Iowa Conference. Coach Breese is a Pennsylvania native who won a AAA state championship at McGuffey High School in Western Pennsylvania and competed collegiately at North Carolina State. Following his career at N.C. State, Breese had a coaching stop at then-brand new Seton Hill University. He spent a year working for the National Wrestling Coaches Association in Manheim, Pa., before getting back into coaching at Northern Illinois. He returned to his alma mater for several seasons before taking over the BV wrestling program at the start of the 2014-15 wrestling season. Breese breaks down his plans for the program, how he's reaching out to alumni and the administration, his goals and what it's been like to go from the world of Division I to trying to carve out a place in Division III. Spies, cavalry, and telescopes were the traditional intelligence tools available during the Civil War, but there was also cutting edge high tech: the telegraph and the observation balloon. How did Civil War generals combine these to help make strategic decisions? As we observe the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, SPY Historian Mark Stout discusses this question with Professor William Feis of Buena Vista University, the author of Grant’s Secret Service: The Intelligence War from Belmont to Appomattox.
Jokes: Waiters A man walks into a restaurant and is shown to his seat by the hostess. The waiter approaches and asks, "Would you like to try our house special? The man replies, "No, just bring me a steak, and make it lean". The waiter, somewhat puzzled, looks at him and replies, "which way?" Important Tasks A doctor got a phone call from one of his colleagues. "We need a fourth for poker," the voice on the phone said. "I'll be right over," replied the doctor. As he was putting on his overcoat, his wife asked, "Is it serious?" "Oh yes, quite serious," he said gravely. "They've had to call in three other doctors as well." On Our Mind: Catching Up or Leading the Way Yong Zhao Listeners: Comment: Thank you for keeping us updated. I incredibly enjoy it and discover all the information really useful. Krav Maga Hi guys, I am at the Technology Integration and Instruction for the 21st Century Learner conference in Storm Lake, Iowa at Buena Vista University. I listen to your podcasts (and have given you the 4 stars on i-Tunes). Love the links, discussion and your thoughts. It gives me time to reflect, something we do not do enough of. I do have a suggestion, and this is on the technical side of the the podcast production. Please moderate the theme music, it is so loud that it drowns out the voice and is much louder than the volume of the spoken word. I have to quick reach for the volume on my i-pod, or computer so it does not wake my daughter or wife in the next rooms as I listen to you late at night when everyone is in bed. I know through using garage band that the volumes can be adjusted. It is way worse than the increase in volume of commercials on TV. Thanks again for your great work, Craig Cadman Middle School Science From ASCD: Middle-school students create podcasts as part of place-based learning Middle-school students at an Oregon charter school created podcasts as part of their study of a local streetcar line that used to operate near their school. Educators say the streetcar project and the podcasts are a form of place-based learning, which includes studying the history of neighborhoods, communities and buildings under the umbrella of environmental education. The student recordings are posted on the website of the regional transportation planning agency, which is considering reviving the original line. http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2010/06/southwest_charter_school_stude.html David Bydlowski From the Twitterverse: Tech Tools: Doodle - Collaborative Scheduling http://doodle.com/ DabbleBoard - http://dabbleboard.com/ Free Web Pages http://pageeasy.com/ Webspotlight: Interesting world view: http://timemaps.com/history/ Top 100 technology blogs for teachers Posted on Jun. 17th 2010 6:23 PM by alexis (This article is a continuation and combination of two previous lists: “The Top 25 eLearning Blogs,” and “The Top 20 Teacher Blogs“) http://www.onlinedegrees.org/top-100-technology-blogs-for-teachers/ News: Report finds KIPP students outscore public school peers Prince George's bans student cellphone use during school day Carpe Data: In Defense of Common Standards Events & Happenings:
