Do churches need to be more exclusive? For years, both Evangelical and Progressive churches have lowered expectations to get people in the door. In this episode, Loren Richmond Jr. talks with Dr. Tricia Lyons, a leader in evangelism at Virginia Theological Seminary, about why churches should raise the bar to reclaim a compelling, transformative vision for sharing the gospel. Dr. Lyons challenges seeker-sensitive and all-are-welcome models, questioning whether they truly form disciples. Instead, she advocates for a high-bar Christianity—one that calls people into deep commitment rather than passive inclusion. The conversation explores church decline, the limits of hospitality, the power of formation, and why high expectations create stronger faith communities. Dr. Lyons currently teaches evangelism, works with the Lifelong Learning team, and serves as the Senior Advisor to the Dean for Evangelism Initiatives at VTS. She also directs the EvangelismFormationLab@VTS, a digital portal on YouTube and Facebook offering original content from the Seminary as well as thoughtful curation of resources in evangelism and formation for the wider church. Dr. Lyons was a lay chaplain and teacher of religion in Episcopal schools for 20 years before being ordained a priest and then serving parishes in Washington, DC, eventually serving as Canon for Evangelism in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. Currently, Tricia serves as a non-stipendiary priest at the Church of Saint Clement in Alexandria, VA. Tricia is a member of the Presiding Bishop's Strategic Cabinet on Evangelism and one of the original writers of the “Way of Love.” Tricia is an honors graduate from Harvard College, the Harvard Divinity School, and received her doctorate from the Virginia Theological Seminary. She is the author of four books on faith formation, The Soul of Adolescence, Teaching Faith with Harry Potter, What is Evangelism? and her most recent, The Evangelist's Breviary. When Dr. Scoresby began to ask what parents do or could do to teach their children about faith, he said he got a lot of strange looks and then was told by many parents that they read scriptures, pray, and attend church with their children. This is a great answer, but then he asked them if they had specific ideas about how parents could teach it. When met with uncertainty, he discovered that there are some things parents would like to know, so if you listen to this episode, you will begin to get an idea about what we as parents may not know and should know about teaching faith. This week's episode asks Townsend and Preacher Man to reflect on how they've intentionally taught faith to their children and how they feel it has gone. Preacher Man's kids are all "grown" - Townsend still has a way to go. But, give a listen and see if you don't notice a similarity to how seriously they take the responsibility of actively teaching things of faith to their children and to others' children, as well! Got a question you want answered or a topic you'd like to hear Townsend and Preacher Man muse on? Let them know at mtpm.podcast@gmail.com !Intro music: "Royalty Free Music from Bensound"

We don't find God; He chose us form among those He didn't choose before the world was formed. The purpose of the choice is that we could be holy and without blame when we finally come before Him in love. Becoming holy and blameless before Him is not a change we make in ourselves. He makes that change in us for our faith. VF-2204 Ephesians 1:4 Watch, Listen and Learn 24x7 at PastorMelissaScott.com Pastor Melissa Scott teaches from Faith Center in Glendale. After an incident occurred in which a young catechumen was angered and hurt by the way her catechist brought up and spoke on abortion, Angel and Carlos discussed the ways in which Church and Scriptural truths can be taught that does not diminish their ideals. Young people are looking to be nurtured, hoping to find ways that the teachings are relevant to them and their own lives. The old ways of teaching no longer work in a society that has access to so much more information. We must change the way we teach in order to speak to the hearts of the young Catholics, and hopefully prevent them from disassociating from the Church.

God's Word is timeless. It's for everyone. But studying the Word is not a one and done experience. It is meant to be an ongoing, lifelong process. As we go through our daily lives we are confronted with big questions. A quick glance at the news headlines these days reveals many big topics that we as Christians are left to wrestle with. While these questions may change from day to day, the Word doesn't change. Rather it speaks to us as we navigate our way through the challenges we are faced with. Simply put, the stronger our foundation is in the Word, the better equipped we will be to handle the big topics that come our way. We're still sinful human beings, so we won't always get it right, but we now where we can turn for hope, guidance, and forgiveness. But how do we as adults, parents, teachers, church workers help our children develop a strong foundation for faith, to become lifelong faith learning? How do we help equip them to turn to God's Word when they are faced with the big questions? Teaching the faith to our children is an epic responsibility. How can we be best equipped to meet that responsibility? That's what we'll be talking about today with our guest, Rev. Pete Jurchen.
