America's foreign policy is basically just "I want to do hoodrat things with my friends", now. Why sending all of our money and servicemen overseas has historically failed us. Plus, Taylor Swift appeared to tell the cameras to 'GO AWAY PLEASE' after a cameraman lingered on her for too long during her visit to watch boyfriend Travis Kelce in Chiefs-Ravens game. And, Amy Robach and TJ Holmes are officially annoying after he admits he feared being viewed as a "black man beating up on a white woman" in a podcast about their communication issues. In this interview with author Mary Carroll Moore, we talk about her new book, A Woman's Guide to Search and Rescue, which is available for preorder and launches on October 24th, 2023. In a former life, Mary was a syndicated food journalist who wrote many food and cooking-related articles and books. At fifty, she went back to school for her MFA and began not only writing, but also teaching fiction. Mary's curiosity about aviation was piqued by her mother, Elizabeth ‘Betty' Hartz Carroll, who earned her pilot license in 1942 and flew with the Women Airforce Service Pilots during WWII. That curiosity inspired her to create two modern-day aviation characters, one an inland search and rescue pilot, and one an aerobatic pilot, in this new thriller novel that features a false murder accusation, a run from the law, and estranged sisters who reunite. Mary was also inspired to try flying herself. She recently started taking lessons and is both excited and overwhelmed by all there is to learn. Let's give her a warm welcome to the community, and support her by buying her new book! We also talk in-depth about her writing and publishing journey during this conversation. A Woman's Guide to Search and Rescue is a stand-alone novel but is also the sequel to Mary's first work of fiction, Qualities of Light. You can find Mary at her website MaryCarrollMoore.com and on LinkedIn @MaryCarrollMoore. Thanks so much for listening! In this episode, I sit down with Alicia Hunt, a Commercial Pilot and Flight Instructor. Before becoming a pilot, Alicia had a 13 year career in film, commercial work and theatre in Los Angeles. Alicia found she could never stop looking for her next gig and never turn off her phone and risk missing a call from her agent. She burnt out and planned a trip to Asia with her best friend. But the trip didn't rejuvenate Alicia, it confirmed her life needed to shift. She says, “I thought I would come back refreshed. And instead, I got back and felt a natural point of separation. It was a natural point to change my life. I was ready to find my next step.”Alicia knew she needed something hands on and very “boots on the ground”. Alicia thrives on high intensity situations and those around her offered suggestions such as becoming a surgeon, a 911 operator or a police officer. There was a very consistent theme.Alicia enlisted the help of a career counselor, and she provided some blunt analysis: “Alicia, you are a complex person. There will be no perfect fit for you. Whichever career you choose, you will be leaving large parts of yourself at the door.” During this time, Alicia heard of the pilot shortage— that there weren't enough people to fly planes, let alone women and people of color. Through twists and turns along the way, Alicia got herself into the sky and now teaches others how to fly. Alicia works to recruit women to the field and mentors both women and people of color to secure scholarships for flight school.Alicia, like other pilots, is critical of her landings. Asking herself these questions helps her to remember, perfect is not the goal: “Did you bend any metal? Did anybody get hurt? Did anybody die? No? Then it was a good landing.” For Alicia, being imperfect is part of the job.Highlights from Alicia:"I took a train all the way across China from the eastern edge of it all the way to the edge of Tibet, and made a lot of stops in between. It was incredible. And when I finished the trip, I thought I would come back and feel refreshed, it was the vacation of a lifetime. And instead, I got back and I was at a natural point of separation. It was a natural point of being ready to change my life. I was ready to find my next step.""One of the things I knew I wanted out of a new career is I wanted something high demand. I was really tired of being in a market that was saturated. And where I knew I had so much to give in that field. But so did everyone else. And I was tired of constantly pushing and pushing and pushing to look for work.""One of my favorite things about acting is how you must be present. You can't be anywhere else. You have to be completely immersed in your character in the moment and the scene and the dialogue. And it's the exact same when you're flying a plane. You can not be distracted with anything else. You need to be listening to air traffic control. You need to be ready to deliver your own line which is coming up soon. You know your traffic control talks then you talk and it's a script. Let me tell you, if you can do Shakespeare you can sure as heck can do air traffic control."Don't Miss a Beat. Our guest today, who will conclude season two of the AVIATE with Shaesta podcast, is Colonel Nicole Malachowski. At age 5, during a time when women were not permitted to fly for the military, Nicole knew that someday, she would fly a fighter jet. Finishing fourth in her class, Nicole graduated from pilot training at Columbus AFB, Mississippi, and was selected for the only F-15E slot allotted to her class. Nicole has served in a few operational tours and went into combat for the United States Air Force. In 2005, Nicole made history by becoming the first woman to fly for the Thunderbirds, completing 140 performances, and inspiring a generation of women aviators. In my conversation, I ask Nicole about her remarkable career and how she managed her mental health along the way. We also discuss Nicole's physical health, especially after she was suddenly diagnosed with a tick-borne illness, which changed her life and career trajectory.

Eileen Collins is a retired NASA astronaut and United States Air Force colonel. She was the first female pilot and first female commander of a Space Shuttle. Eileen has been recognized by Encyclopædia Britannica as one of the top 300 women in history who have changed the world. She has been inducted into the National Women's Hall Of Fame and the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame. Her new book is called Through the Glass Ceiling to the Stars: The Story of the First American Woman to Command a Space Mission. Some interesting insights from this episode: Her father was an alcoholic and her mother was institutionalized but she didn't let anything from her childhood define her for the rest of her life. She never shared her dream of becoming an astronaut with anyone until she got accepted into the astronaut training program. She didn't feel anyone would be supportive. It takes a tremendous amount of focus and discipline to fly a jet but she wasn't always wired that way. These are skills that can be learned. When she gets nervous, to calm herself down, she would envision herself not as Eileen Collins but as the Commander of a spaceship. To be a good leader, you have to learn to listen to others and to be humble when you listen to them. People won't respect you as a leader if you're telling others what to do all the time. An investigation into the Space Shuttle Columbia accident revealed that a big contributing factor was NASA's culture. People weren't listening. People assigned to safety were being intimated and weren't speaking up. And they weren't thinking creatively. “Excellence is about knowledge, communicating openly and having high integrity.” Show Notes Book: Through the Glass Ceiling to the Stars: The Story of the First American Woman to Command a Space Mission

Open Skies: My Life as Afghanistan's First Female Pilot Show Guest: Niloofar Rahmani The true story of Niloofar Rahmani and her determination to become Afghanistan's first female air force pilot In 2010, for the first time since the Soviets, Afghanistan allowed women to join the armed forces, and Niloofar entered Afghanistan's military academy. Niloofar had to break through social barriers to demonstrate confidence, leadership, and decisiveness—essential qualities for a combat pilot. Niloofar performed the first solo flight of her class—ahead of all her male classmates—and in 2013 became Afghanistan's first female fixed-wing air force pilot. The US State Department honored Niloofar with the International Women of Courage Award and brought her to the United States to meet Michelle Obama and fly with the US Navy's Blue Angels. But when she returned to Kabul, the danger to her and her family had increased significantly. Rahmani and her family are portraits of the resiliency of refugees and the accomplishments they can reach when afforded opportunities.

In this second part of our conversation, Erika and I talk about how highly educated, powerful and intelligent women can get trapped in a life cycle and crash into the ground. Also, how we can regain our power by reaching out to others and get the support from other women. This conversation is bit uncomfortable. We talk about domestic violence which is more common than you think or know. We talk about the importance of maintaining our own financial identity no matter the situation we're in. We talk about how simply and rich life can be when we know how to create happiness from within.Fun facts: Can you tell the difference between an airline captain and their co-pilot/First Officer by looking at their uniforms? If you see a 4-stripes uniform, they are a captain. If you see a 3 stripes uniform, they are a First Officer. Danielle Lewis is my guest today. Danielle is an airline pilot for a major commercial airline. After years serving in the Air Force as a C130 pilot, Danielle was part of the 6% of female aviators in the US military. She was the first female hired to fly a civilian version of the C130 in Africa into the Congo. She has some great stories of zebras and life in Africa. We chat about her struggles being recognized as a pilot and the fact that women only make up 3%-4% of commercial pilots. Amazingly to me she still has to convince some male passengers that they will be okay with a female flying their plane.I asked her what was the biggest change was for her going from military flights to commercial flights. Her response:“It’s boring and I love it. Boring is relative, right. No one is shooting at you. At all of the other jobs, even in Africa people were shooting at you.” Danielle talks about her favorite places to fly to and visit. She also shares some great tips for flying into and out of various US airports. I am so thankful for her going out of her comfort zone and being gracious to share her time and stories. She is an inspiration to the girls she mentors and hopefully she gets the chance to reach more girls. They can see a great example of being focused and determined to succeed in a field that is male centered.Danielle is the first guest on my show that initially said “No” to being a guest and then decided she would like to be on the show. She reached out to me several months after my initial request to explain that the girls she mentors asked her what she has done to be out of her own comfort zone. She remembered being asked by me to be a guest on the podcast and turning it down. It was a reminder to her that even as we get older we need to push our own comfort zones.Intro Song “Road Trip” by Robin Tricker
