Friends! Thanks for joining today's meeting,. Today's question is "Why Are We So Hard On Ourselves?" I say we, but I mean me.Life is not designed to hand us success or satisfaction, but rather to present us with challenges that make us grow. Terry Laughlin, founder of Total Immersion. This past summer was a major challenge for me and I thought I had become an expert at managing a crisis, with hip replacements, bankruptcy, heartbreak, tragedies, adopting via foster care, I thought I checked a lot of boxes for painful things. However, this summers challenge involved me spending 4 nights in the Intensive Care Unit at a Children's Hospital with my daughter. It was an expected surgery. I knew we would be in the intensive care unit. It was still terrifying. I still remember the beeping sounds.Good news, my daughter is healing and we got through it. We will likely go back for more surgeries but I will address that when the time comes. Here are 4 things I learned about that experience and I hope these things help you with any challenge you're facing now. 1. Give yourself credit for your wins. You have some wins, even if your win is that you're listening to podcasts and seeking information or ways to get better at managing your life. You have one, so recognize it.2. You can't wait until you have everything figured out to feel confident. You have to do things that are uncomfortable and solve the problems that you need to solve along the way. This is life. I am swimming in the unknown and I think this is the ocean I will continue to live in and that's ok. 3. You will make mistakes. Solve them, forgive yourself for errors and move forward. Repeat this cycle as needed, especially the forgiving yourself part.4. Don't be so hard on yourself, you're growing. You're a human being that is growing. Let's start today's meeting.

THIRD ANNUAL ENDURANCE EXCHANGE TO TAKE PLACE VIRTUALLY MARCH 3-5, 2022 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The third annual Endurance Exchange presented by BOA Nutrition, an industry-wide conference for endurance professionals and athletes, will be held as a state-of-the-art virtual event March 3-5, 2022. This online experience for the second consecutive year affords everyone an opportunity to safely learn, share and network, and provides reduced costs and added flexibility for attendees. While the goal continues to be to bring the community together annually for an in-person conference, USA Triathlon received overwhelming feedback in a survey it sent a few months ago that many were still recovering and the cost of travel and lodging, as well as job professional and personal obligations, made a virtual conference the best option in 2022. The conference will also record all live sessions and provide attendees the option to view sessions on-demand on their own schedule for three months after the event. Endurance Exchange is a joint effort to grow, inspire and support the multisport community by bringing industry stakeholders together to learn, share best practices, network and collaborate. The virtual format in 2022 will once again be hosted on Cvent and encourage participation from an even wider range of multisport constituents. The event is open not only to those involved in the business of triathlon, but also to multisport enthusiasts of all types — from beginners to competitive age-group athletes to Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls — as specific athlete-focused sessions will cater to all skill and experience levels. USA Triathlon is continuing to explore options for in-person educational, resource sharing and networking opportunities later in 2022 and will provide additional information as details are finalized. New in 2022, this year's event will feature a content track specifically for multisport club leaders and administrators, and two options for the Athlete Insider track for novices or advanced athletes. Attendees can also expect additional engaging and interactive features, including live polling, in-session chats, in-session surveys, and prizes for the most engaged conference attendees. Registration for the 2022 event is now open at enduranceexchange.com at early-bird pricing of $150 for the All-Access track and $45 for the Athlete Insider track. All registrants will also have the opportunity to purchase or extend their USA Triathlon annual memberships for 12 months at a discounted rate of $35. Attendees will have the opportunity to earn up to 10 coaching and/or race director CEUs. Nearly 1,100 members of the multisport community attended virtually in 2021 to engage with more than 60 hours content across nearly 80 sessions and more than 130 speakers. Registrants should expect a similar volume of content in 2022's edition. The conference sessions will run from approximately 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. EST on Thursday, March 3 and Friday, March 4, and from approximately 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. EST on Saturday, March 5. For the third year, USA Triathlon is offering a limited number of Together We Thrive Endurance Exchange scholarships to foster diversity and bring varied perspectives to the event. Interested candidates may apply here. Priority will be given to people of racial and ethnic minorities, women, and those who may not otherwise be able to attend due to financial constraints. More information about session topics and speakers will be available at enduranceexchange.com as details are finalized. For sponsorship inquiries and other questions related to Endurance Exchange, please email info@enduranceexchange.com. If you LOVED this episode:You'll also love the conversations we had with Kamal Ravikant about reimagining life and learning to love himself. You can find Tim Ferriss at: Website | Instagram | The Tim Ferris Show podcastTim Ferriss has been a man on a mission, driven to deconstruct mastery and excellence, then share what he's learned. It began with his own relentless experimentation and documentation, which yielded #1 New York Times bestsellers The 4-Hour Workweek, The 4-Hour Body, The 4-Hour Chef along with a series of other books. In more recent years, this yearning has led him to sit down with hundreds of elite performers, from a vast array of domains, on a quest to reveal what made them them. These conversations are shared weekly on Tim's award-winning podcast, The Tim Ferris Show. In today's Best Of conversation, we cover very different ground, and get very personal. Tim actually lost a number of people in the year before we sat down in the studio, turned 40 and found himself in a deeply contemplative and emotional space, thinking about who he is, how he wants to create the next 40 years of his life and what matters. When I sat down with Tim, he'd recently returned from an intensive 10-day silent meditation retreat. While gone, he lost yet another close friend. He was, in his own words, in an incredibly "porous" place, leading more from the heart than the head, which was a bit of a major turnaround for him.We spent time deconstructing Tim's 10-day silent meditation experience, his struggles and awakenings, how it compared to psychedelic experiences and how, barring one major saving grace, his retreat may have sent him spiraling into a very bad place. We also talked about his experience with death, his decision to append audio of his departed friend, Terry Laughlin, which was recorded by Terry's daughters in the hospital during his final days of life to the end of Tim's recent podcast interview with Terry. Tim also shared his decision to take the TED stage, switching last minute to talk about something deeply painful and personal, and what that meant to him, his lens on legacy work (and how it landed with his family, who didn't know what he'd be talking about). And, we explored Tim's awakening to a "softer" set of metrics to measure a life well-lived and his evolving definition of what it truly means to live a good life.My new book Sparked.Check out our offerings & partners: Tommy John: We fixed underwear. You know how to run, I mean it's something you have done since childhood, is it not? You ran, played catch with friends, and ran some more and either you fell in love with the sport, and stuck to it, or you didn't love it and left it, only to start later on in adult life because maybe you thought it's a good way to stay healthy. Either way, you both have something in common... at one stage you realized you are sitting a lot. Too much as a matter of fact. Just count the hours you are actually sitting down. Actually I don't even want to do it because I realize with all the car journey's I sit many hours a week in my car.... If this is your situation, tell me, how do you make improvements? How do you know what your body is capable of? Good thing you joined me on this podcast, I will tell you how. But wait, is it ok, we dive right into the topic or do you first want to hear 5 minutes worth of ads, and " message from my sponsors"... no ads, no sponsors, just my passion for running, and 35 years of experience helping coaching and training runners improve their mindset, their attitude to become a better, stronger and smarter runner. Seriously, wouldn't it help making better decisions? In terms of your running, your attitude towards how you train, your discipline, determination... without becoming a hardcore "ain't no mountain high enough", no we leave that up to the pro's, Kilian Journet or others... what I want to say is, wont you one day feel proud looking back at your running career, and you know that in this part of your life, you dedicated a healthy amount of time and resources, and occasionally went for your best results. That's what this whole podcast is about. I have worked with many different runners over the past years Actually swimmers and runners, but the swimming is a story for another podcast, as I used to teach a really impressive approach which was invited by Terry Laughlin, great man, passed away some years ago sorry to say... but anyway, back to running, running attitude, your best run which I believe is still ahead of you... By training smart, or Smart training you will get more freedom, and skill for your running.
This week I am talking to Genii who lives in Upstate New York. I'm fascinated that she came to wild swimming as a bi product of teaching SUP Yoga - taking lessons when she was in her 60s, as she's never learned to swim properly. This was about added security for her SUP Yoga clients, but what she found was a whole community of open water swimmers and a series of events that she was actually quite good at. She may think that she has won medals because she is "lucky" that there aren't many other swimmers in her age group. I think she's getting out there and competing, which has nothing to do with luck, but hard work and talent. Her story is wonderful to listen to. Enjoy. Things we talk about Swim Trek, Coney Island Brighton Beach Open Water Swimmers, Coney Island Polar Bears, Grimaldo's Mile, Lake Placid Betsy Owens (1 mile) and Terry Laughlin (2 miles), Henley Club to Pub swim, Lake George 2.5k, 5k and 10k swims
Tim Ferris has been on a mission (http://tim.blog/podcast/) to deconstruct excellence his entire adult life. It began with his own relentless experimentation and documentation, which yielded #1 New York Times bestsellers The 4-Hour Workweek, The 4-Hour Body and The 4-Hour Chef.In more recent years, this yearning has led him to sit down with hundreds of elite-performers and share the conversations on his award-winning podcast (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-tim-ferriss-show/id863897795?mt=2). Tim and I recorded a Good Life Project conversation back in 2016 which you can listen to here (http://www.goodlifeproject.com/tim-ferriss/).Today, we go in a very different direction. After the loss a number of close friends and mentors and passing the 40-year mark, Tim found himself in a contemplative and emotional space. In this week's conversation, we drop into the deep end of the pool quickly. When we sat down, he'd recently returned from an intensive 10-day silent meditation retreat. While gone, he lost yet another close friend. He was, in his own words, in an incredibly "porous" place, leading more from the heart than the head, which is a bit of a major turnaround for him.We spent time deconstructing Tim's 10-day silent meditation experience, his struggles and awakenings and contrasted it with his earlier psychedelic experiences. We also talked about his experience with death, his decision to append audio of his most recently departed friend, Terry Laughlin, which was recorded by Terry's daughters in the hospital during his final days of life to the end of Tim's recent podcast interview with Terry (https://tim.blog/2017/10/29/terry-laughlin/).We explore why he "threw out" the TED talk he'd prepared minutes before stepping onto the stage and, instead, talk about something deeply painful and personal from the heart. Last week's guest Thanks to last week's guest, ultra and adventure racer Travis Macy who is the author of The Ultra Mindset: an endurance champion's 8 core principles for success in business, sports and life. If you haven't heard the interview yet, go back and check it out on episode #105. Discussion Teasers After the interview I'll have some thoughts on the interview with Jim Vance, his book Triathlon 2.0, considerations for the self-coached athlete, and an offer to those who want to take their training to the next level or feel like they could use the partnership of a coach this season. I also have some reflections on some of the show highlights this year and some of the interviews that were particularly memorable and informational. Last, I have a funny Christmas triathlon gift story and a ask to see if any of you have good triathlon or gear Christmas stories that you would share. That's it for the teasers, let's go to the interview. Interview Setup Jim Vance is an elite endurance sports coach, author, and sport technology and training consultant based in San Diego, California. He is the personal coach 2016 US Olympic triathlete Ben Kanute, guiding him to 2017 performances of victory at Escape from Alcatraz and Island House Triathlon, as well as a 2nd place finish at the 70.3 World Championships. Triathlon 2.0 is an extremely useful book if you are a self-coached athlete. It will help give you concrete information on how to use data to do baseline testing, guidelines for determining goal training stress, and concepts for how to create a periodized training plan. After the interview, we'll go through a couple pages of the book to give you a practical example of how to determine goal CTL for each the bike and run using an hypothetical athlete and race distance. As Jim emphasizes in the book, these will just be examples and do not apply to all athletes or all race situations. Let's get into the interview now. Interview Jim Vance Health IQ Ad And we are back. Thanks again to Health IQ for sponsoring today's interview. The Health IQ advantage is their unique mortality model that enables lower rates for health conscious people. Just like having a good driving record saves you money on auto insurance, Health IQ uses science & data to secure lower rates on life insurance for health conscious people including runners, cyclists, strength trainers, vegans, and more. With other life insurance companies, you might be penalized for family history, BMI, and other attributes but don't get rewarded for your health conscious lifestyle. You put in the time to train consistently, have the discipline to get out there in the cold, in the dark, you eat well, and you get the rewards of greater energy, and you feel good about yourself. Let's face it, you spend money on race registrations, gym memberships and gear. See if you can reward yourself further and recoup some of those investments. See how much you can save. To see if you qualify, get your free quote today at healthiq.com/milehigh or mention the promo code Mile High when you talk to a Health IQ agent. Host Discussion Topics Practical example from Triathlon 2.0 As Jim and I discussed, there is no substitute for using hard data to assess and measure performance. This is not to say that there is not a time and place for training or racing by feel. I'll give you a couple of examples. I like to do some rides and runs where I never look at a bike computer or look at my watch. If I'm thinking about the data on my device, that part of my concentration that is on the device is not on the effort or form of the training itself. In this case performance might be limited by not being able to fully concentrate on the training. Here's another example, there are times with the information on the screen might limit your performance because you curtail effort because the data is telling you are going harder or faster than your rate of perceived exertion. Let's say your 5 minute peak power is 300 watts from previous training sessions. You are doing a 5 minute Vo2 max effort on the bike and you look down and your average 20 second power has been 310 for the first minute of your interval. You may not believe you are capable of carrying that effort for the remaining 4 minutes and end up backing off. If you were training by feel and just going off RPE, you actually may have been on a breakthrough performance and could have achieved a new PR 5 minute peak power. My daughter's high school cross country coach won't let the athletes race with watches because it can limit their competitive nature. The concern that they may be in the heat of battle keeping pace with a team mate or a lead group, and they see that their pace is 10 seconds faster than they've trained to and they back off and let that team mate or group go. So there is a time and place for going by feel. Here's where you want some actual data - let's say you are doing your functional threshold testing for bFTP or rFTP. You may do the effort without looking at a watch or power meter if you have a coach or lab tech doing your test, but you damn sure want to have data to record what the power or pace is, correct? Here's another, when you work with a coach or go to prepare you periodized training plan, you need to assess your current training load and your goal training load based on your "A" race goal and "goal" for that race (meaning distance and planned result). Just using hours of training or mileage is not a measure of actual stress because they don't account for intensity. Plus, as we learned in the interview with Jim, preriodization is changing the type of training you are doing as you progress from phase to phase through your plan. You start in the base phase doing general training and get more specific the closer you get to your goal. Similarly, your intensity increases when you get into your build and peak phases altering the training load for a given duration or distance. Having an objective measure of the starting CTL and goal CTL are critical to your plan. You can assess your baseline CTL by using TrainingPeaks as long as you are recording all of your bike and run workouts and are using power and/or heart rate. As Jim mentioned, you want to track these seperately. You should work with a qualified coach to help you determine what your target CTL is for your race goal and to know whether your ramp rate from the baseline to the goal given the number of weeks to your "A" race is appropriate. If you want to learn more about this process or want help planning for next season, reach out to me at Rich@milehighendurance.com Speaking of your 2018 season, if you are listening to this episode on the day of release then you are listening to this on New Year's Eve. A lot of races have price increases at midnight tonight. Then go out and celebrate that you've already ticked the box on one of your resolutions! 2017 Show Highlights: When I reflected on all of the interviews of 2017, I scanned through the inventory on the Content page on the MHE website. This week, we're bringing you Tim Ferriss like you've never heard him.Ferris has been a man on a mission, driven to deconstruct mastery and excellence, then share what he's learned. It began with his own relentless experimentation and documentation, which yielded #1 New York Times bestsellers The 4-Hour Workweek, The 4-Hour Body and The 4-Hour Chef.In more recent years, though, this yearning has led him to sit down with hundreds of elite-performers, from a vast array of domains, on a quest to reveal what made them them. These conversations are shared weekly on Tim's award-winning podcast, The Tim Ferris Show. We recorded a Good Life Project conversation with Tim earlier this year, which you can listen to here.In today's conversation, we go in a very different direction. Tim actually lost a number of people this year, turned 40 and found himself in a deeply contemplative and emotional space, thinking about who he is, how he wants to create the next 40 years of his life and what matters. This all led him to seek out wisdom from many of the world's greatest thinkers and achievers, which he's condensed and edited into his latest book, Tribe of Mentors: Short Life Advice from the Best in the World. In this week's conversation, we drop into the deep end of the pool quickly. When we sat down with Tim, he'd recently returned from an intensive 10-day silent meditation retreat. While gone, he lost yet another close friend. He was, in his own words, in an incredibly "porous" place, leading more from the heart than the head, which is a bit of a major turnaround for him.We spent time deconstructing Tim's 10-day silent meditation experience, his struggles and awakenings, how it compared to psychedelic experiences and how, barring one major saving grace, his retreat may have sent him spiraling into a very bad place. We also talked about his experience with death, his decision to append audio of his most recently departed friend, Terry Laughlin, which was recorded by Terry's daughters in the hospital during his final days of life to the end of Tim's recent podcast interview with Terry. Tim also shared his decision to take the TED stage, switching last minute to talk about something deeply painful and personal, and what that meant to him, his lens on legacy work (and how it landed with his family, who didn't know what he'd be talking about). And, we explored Tim's awakening to a "softer" set of metrics to measure a life well-lived and his evolving definition of what it truly means to live a good life.Mentioned In This Episode:Tim's 2017 TED Talk: Why you should define your fears instead of your goalsTim's conversation with Terry LaughlinJack KornfieldTim's conversation with James FadimanTim's conversation with Dan Engle+--------------------------+Our Podcast Partners: ZipRecruiter: Post jobs for FREE, go to ZipRecruiter.com/good.ShipStation: Manage and ship your orders. Remembering Terry Laughlin, Total Immersion and former guest Terry Laughlin, who created the technique-focused swim training system known as “Total Immersion,” passed away Friday, Oct. 20, after complications with prostate cancer. Laughlin was 66 years old. Laughlin is survived by his wife, Alice, and daughters Fiona, Carrie and Betsy. The family announced his death Monday: “After living with metastatic prostate cancer for two years, Terry passed away on Friday, October 20th, 2017, of complications related to his condition. “He displayed his characteristic optimism, wit, and passion for life—and swimming—until the very end. Our family is in mourning and we ask that we be given time and space to grieve a beloved husband and father privately.” Terry talks about swimming like some people describe an Italian sports car or fine art, or a food describes their favorite dessert. #62 - Interview with Terry about the book Total Immersion and what the Total Immersion methodology is all about. #82 - We are going to talk to Terry about the importance of bi-lateral breathing, a convincing explanation of why it is possible and the opportunity to take your swim stroke to a new level. #71 - Terry Laughlin, Chief Optimist Officer at Total Immersion. Terry is coming back on the show to talk about his latest blog article "What's your best stroke rate? - How I found mine. And why it's still evolving." We'll talk about the article and you'll be sure to pick up insightful information about how to not only find your ideal stroke rate, but also learn how to reduce your SPL (to monitor stroke length). Most of the interview is about how to help you swim faster with less effort, but we also talk about some of the swim clinics they offer in great locations around the world. Hommage à Terry Laughlin le créateur de la méthode de nage total immersion. Cette méthode a changé ma vie. Pourquoi un biohacker devrait se mettre à nager.
This episode will forever have special meaning for me. While I didn't know it at the time, this ended up being the final long-form interview with Terry Laughlin (@TISWIM). Terry passed away from cancer complications on October 20, just two weeks after we recorded this interview.Terry was the founder of Total Immersion Swimming and co-author of Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way To Swim Better, Faster, and Easier. He had a profound impact on me -- teaching me to overcome a lifelong fear of water and swimming (read all about it here). But more than that, he's been an inspiration for the way I've done anything since.Terry coached three college and two USA Swimming club teams from 1973 to 1988, improving each team dramatically. In that time, he developed 24 national champions at all strokes and distances -- the first national champions produced by four different teams. In 1989, Terry founded Total Immersion and turned his focus from working with young, accomplished swimmers to adults with little experience or skill (like me). But it's not just about swimming; Terry's elegant method of deconstruction and logical progression is the epitome of what I strive to do when I'm talking about learning any skill -- from investing to learning languages. It's with a heavy heart but much gratitude that I was able to interview Terry before he passed. Please enjoy, savor, and digest what Terry had to impart. And be sure to check out Terry's gift for listeners to this podcast: a free seven-day membership to the Total Immersion Academy online training center.***If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Let's get into the interview with Dr. Carwyn Sharp and hear what he has to say about your energy zones. Now most athletes that are listening to this show is familiar to well-versed on training zones. Are you really well versed in your training zones? Have you ever been curious about what is happening at a biological level inside your body and how it relates to the training zones. Are your training zones right? If you have a coach - excellent. If they are a USAT certified coach they have been through this training and they know what they are talking about. If however, you are in the range of using training zones that are vaguely defined or not defined at all, you really want to stop what you are doing and just settle in for a good bit of learning. Grab something to take notes if you like. And we're back. We are recording today's show just before the interview, so we don't have a retrospective per se, but we know you are way smarter about the topic than you were an hour ago. Whether you are hard core or a casual athlete, this is important information. You now have the knowledge to understand the importance of these different energy systems and how the body's performance is sourced. Let's talk briefly about upcoming interviews. We've talked about the benefits of using a tempo trainer on finding your most efficient Stroke Rate and Strokes Per Length. I've invited Terry Laughlin back on the show to talk about how to use the Tempo Trainer to keep your line in OWS. Khem and I are interviewing Sarah Hartman from Ironman Foundation We are going to ask Siri to come on the show and do a full-on coaching interview Inigo San Milan popped up on the radar screen and said we can reach out late July when he is back in the country As I mentioned in the race report, Transition expert Ken Axford is coming back to do a quick recap on transition skills and speed. Welcome to Episode #71 of the Mile High Endurance podcast. Mile High Endurance is your weekly connection to coaches, experts and pro athletes to help you reach your endurance and triathlon goals. Our interview this week is with Terry Laughlin, Chief Optimist Officer at Total Immersion. We're your hosts Rich Soares and Bill Plock and we're glad you are back with us for another weekend endurance in the Mile High city. Khem has the week off because she is moving. As Bill likes to say, Terry is the John Wooden of Swimming. Speaking of Bill, how's it going my friend? Let's do some updates: Bill - Sea Otter Bill - 303 Articles and News Rich - Thank Dr. Jason Karp 303 web page The book Run Your Fat Off, but also The Inner Runner Defining metabolic efficiency How much ATP can be produced for a given amount of substrate (fuel) Training of the muscles to be metabolically efficient by increasing mitochondrial density Rich - Level 1 Coach Training May 12 and 13th May Race The 4th Discipline of Triathlon Transition training Ken Axford, Level 2 coach Peak Multisport Rich - Training, racing and life in May Usher Sundays USAT course May 12-13 Family arriving May 15 Lauren's Graduation on May 17 Family leaving May 20 Colfax Half is May 21 Do we talk about the Jordan Rapp and Dimond kerfuffle here or in the wrap up? Slow twitch article and lawsuit TJ is an upcoming guest, and I did not know about this story until Bill brought it to my attention Alright, let's get into our interview with Terri Laughlin. If you are listening to this and you are at your laptop or sitting on the couch with your phone, go to http://www.totalimmersion.net/blog/ from the main page go to Community and then Blog. Click on the article "What's your best stroke rate?" and follow along. If you are riding your bike, running or driving, don't go to the website now - go read it later. I also recommend you read the "Green Zone" chart either while listening to the interview or later. I'll put a link in the show notes and on the website on the Resources page. It's in the swimming section and has a ***NEW*** next to it. It is a link to the Total Immersion Store and the chart is a $0 charge item. You check out and you'll get the PDF emailed to you the instance you place your no charge order. I would love to go to one of those clinics. The self-coaching courses are really good, so I can only imagine how good the clinics would be and how cool I would be to do it in Mauritius or Penticton. Check out the Clinics on the TI website. While you are there, go check out the other Free Items and the non-free items in the Store. Also, check out the other blog articles while you are there. Received my tempo trainer in the mail in the afternoon after my interview with Terry. I'm looking forward to giving it a crack this weekend at the pool. It has a number of modes. I can honestly say that TI is really working for me. I'm not a fast swimmer and because my legs sink, I have historically worked really hard when I swim. I have been working at TI drills and focuses for a couple of months now and I really do hit that sweet spot where swimming becomes pretty effortless, at least relative to my historical experience. My struggle is every time I start falling behind or really pushing in a group swim, I start to lose my balance in the water and my legs sink and I stop bilateral breathing. So I keep working at it. Let's talk briefly about upcoming interviews. Charley Perez of Rocky Mountain Tri Club - inclusiveness? TJ Tollakson on Halo, Ruster and Dimond George Cespedes on Tri Animal Aquaman Series. Races starting June 20th and then going weekly into August We hope you are enjoying the show. Welcome to Episode #66 of the Mile High Endurance podcast. Mile High Endurance is your weekly connection to coaches, experts and pro athletes to help you reach your endurance and triathlon goals. We're your hosts Rich Soares, Bill Plock and Khem Suthiwan and we're glad you are back with us for another weekend endurance in the Mile High city. Our guest interview this weekend is Simone Cordery-Cotter from Rudy Project. Simone and I had a great one on one in-person interview at the Rudy Project office in Denver. Simone had us set up in her office and had a number of products out on her desk for us to review. Before we go there, let's catch up with Bill and Khem. Thank last week's guest Will Murray for the discussion on how to make the most of your workouts and fast phobia cure. Thanks also to Bill Plock and 303 Radio for the interview with Tim Brosious and Dave Christen from Ironman. In fact that might just tie into an update from Bill on 303 Triathlon and their support of Ironman Boulder and Team Colorado. Started to read Triathlon Science and have the following agenda developing. I'm thinking I'm going to read through this thing and invite the authors of the various sections on the show to talk about their contribution. I also searched through the Tri-Talk archives and found a handful of episodes that line up with some of the topics in the book Triathlon Science. We'll replay excerpts from those episodes to help us understand those topics. So I mentioned the Tri-Talk episodes that align with topics in the Triathlon Science book. We wrapped up the conversation with David asking if we can also borrow the concept of a comparison of different hair removal products for those who desire to shave their legs. David had published a Tri-Talk episode comparing three methods for leg hair removal. As April approaches, I was planning what I call the "Big Shave" where I shave my beard and legs. I asked David if he would mind if I did a re-make of the Tri-Talk episode. I know this is old hat for the ladies, but men who may be new to the sport or have never taken the big triathlon or cycling commitment of shaving their legs will get some useful information from this experiment. I have voice-recorded the experiment and it's results. I also had my wife video the no budget video, but it actually turned out pretty good. I'll publish the video on YouTube over the weekend and put a link on the website. Alright, let's get into our interview. Part of what I look forward to in the Spring is getting some new gear for the season. It was a couple of weeks ago after our interview with Brian Burk when we talked about the power of inspiration. Brian, as you know, is author or "Running to Leadville" and his story of the dream participating in the Leadville 100 Trail Run and the epic ultra-marathons along the way. Brian's writing is inspiring and we got on the conversation of other sources of inspiration for ultra-endurance events. Khem brought up the idea to get Mike Dion on the show. Khem, do you want to give a little background before we introduce our guest? Khem intro/background on Mike. After watching this movie, I'm trying to decide if I'm more motivated to do my bucket list BC to Baja or not. It's good to see what can go wrong and would do exactly what Mike said was "we pack our fears" on events like this. Like the idea of doing a mini version. I'd be willing to do a 2-3 day thing. We thank you for giving me the next hour or so and exited to share this week's guest with you. Brian Burk, author of "Running to Leadville - Life, Love, Loss and a 100 mile ultramarathon through the extreme Colorado Rockies. More on our feature interview in just a bit. Brian Burk - Amazon Link to "Look Inside" of the book When I look for opportunities for guests on the show, I have a couple of things that I'm looking for: What is the candidates relationship to endurance sport? Are they relevant? Do they possess enough knowledge on the subject and are they credible? Will the audience find them interesting? When I started reading the book, this is the caption that caught my eye and I identified with: "I've come to face reality, I may not have the drive, genetics or time to be in a position to ever place first in my age group or ever win an event, But I can do epic. I will do epic and I will live an epic life. I read started reading the first chapter and was immediately engaged by trying to figure out is the character in the book named "Brian" really the author's persona on the page. Before I knew it, I was engrossed in the story that was unfolding in front of me with each turn of the page. The first chapter of this story was emotional and I admit I cried. But then I'm the sentimental type Khem, I'll have to pass along this book. It's funny how this book surprised me in terms of how interesting I found it. Here's a funny analysis. I really like football. Football is exciting. Like many, I have a date with the NFL every Sunday afternoon for at least a couple hours. Yet, when it comes to movies or books about football, I couldn't give a flip. Don't care, don't want to watch inspirational movies about football. Running, let's face it, can be boring. It can be boring to run (speaking in the first person). Ever spectated a running race? Real exciting right? No, not real exciting. I'm not talking about the finish line of a marathon, I'm talking about standing on the sidewalk in the middle of the course. So to pick up a book, that I know is not "instructional" on the topic of running, I was like -really? I'm so glad I bought the book. I was really entertained by this story and blown away about how he drew the characters from his life in the story. Thanks for joining us again this week. Guess what's coming up in just a couple of weeks, Khem? It's the show's 1 year anniversary coming up. March 10, 2016 was the first episode and in that first month we had a total of 104 downloads. April 276. Let us know you like the content by following our guests and MHE on social media. Welcome to Episode #59 of the Mile High Endurance podcast. Mile High Endurance is your weekly connection to coaches, experts and pro athletes to help you reach your endurance and triathlon goals. We're your hosts Rich Soares and Bill Plock and we thank you for giving us the next hour or so. We have a very different kind of guest today. Mark Mastalir, the Chief Marketing Officer and Halo Neuro Science joins us to talk about an innovative product. Thanks again to Amanda Stevens-Sadler for joining us to talk about metabolic efficiency training and diet, as well as a bit of a discussion on swimming form. If you missed that episode - are you crazy? Get on the website or iTunes and listen to it. She really was a lot of fun to talk to and had great information to share. If you did listen and enjoy the interview with Amanda, would you please go to her Facebook page at @docamandastevens and tell her you liked what she had to tell us. Episode #57 was just 2 weeks ago. We spoke to Terry Laughlin, author of "Total Immersion" and Founder of the swim coaching company of the same name. His insights in the interview were amazing. We ran out of time and agreed to get him back - soon. I've been in touch with Terry and we are just trying to line up dates. Now I'm already starting to prepare my questions for Terry. As I'm re-reading part of Total Immersion recently, I came across the following quotes. "Because SSP (Sensory Skill Practice), as I call it, is a good deal more important - each drill heightens the kinesthetic, or sensory, experience of how 'right swimming' feels. In SSP, we practice swimming while focused on feeling" "Just one repetition of a new drill may start the learning process, may even begin tracing a faint neurological imprint that will make the next repetition easier and more natural. But real skill requires that the groove be cut deeply through many repetitions, done the same way." - muscle memory through repetition, right? This is not ground breaking right? Have we heard this before? Of course we have. Back in mid-December we had Marc Evans, author of Triathletes in Motion. He is probably the foremost expert on bio mechanics and the importance of training the body and developing strength and flexibility to achieve optimal form for your best performance. During the interview, we asked him where the greatest opportunity for athletic performance improvement could be found. He said that the greatest opportunity lies in the connection between our brain and the neuro muscular skeletal system. You'll hear more about it in the interview, but there is another book that is extremely relevant to today's subject. The book is titled "Make It Stick - The Science of Successful Learning" by Peter Brown. In short the book takes the latest research on how we has humans learn effectively and what learning methods have been debunked or proven ineffective by contemporary research. Mindless repetition does not improve retention and learning. Hard effort thinking like trying to recall information without cues. Asking questions before you read so your brain is activated trying to search for an answer to a question while it's reading - really working. Traditional learning teaches a subject one topic at a time, right? If you were attending auto mechanic school, you might learn fuel systems, then electrical systems, then the air flow system, then suspension systems, etc. What contemporary research tells us is that understanding how the fuel system, electrical system and air system work together. Learning 3 or 4 topics within a subject at the same time, may seem hard and it its. However, it is the context of how things relate that makes learning occur faster. Learning can be equated to walking across a grassy field. If you plot a straight line across this field and walk lightly across it a few times and you might start to wear it down a little. Drag or shuffle your feet across the grass and it's harder, but you may wear a path faster. The path through the grass is a metaphor for the neural connections that are developed in our brains. The harder the work, the faster the neural connection development. The brain is plastic and always changing. We can make it change faster with proper learning approaches and techniques. What applies to learning the inner workings of a car or applies to memorizing equations for your next math exam, also extends to bio mechanics, proprioception and movement. Early in the book Make it Stick, they talk about a study of the 3 foot toss. Two groups tested for accuracy throwing balls into a basket place 3 feet away. One group practiced from 3 feet, and only 3 feet. The second group practiced from 2 feet and 4 feet, never from 3 feet. Guess which group tested with a higher accuracy and percent of balls in the basket? The answer - the group that practiced at 2 and 4 feet because they had context. Because it took greater concentration. Because it was harder. There are brain games that people subscribe to for developing their brains performance and increasing the activity in the brain and exploiting the plasticity of the brain to develop neural connections. How is learning to do something physical any different. We are an organism learning to do something new or be better at something all the time. You will hear in the interview today all about the company Halo Neuro Science and the product Halo Neuro Sport. Welcome to Episode #57 of the Mile High Endurance podcast. Mile High Endurance is your weekly connection to coaches, experts and pro athletes to help you reach your endurance and triathlon goals. I'm you host Rich Soares with co-hosts Khem Suthiwan and Bill Plock. We have a very cool interview with Terry Laughlin of Total Immersion today. Thank you to Dirk Friel for coming back on the show and talking about TrainingPeaks recent features. I really didn't hype it up, but I would encourage you to go to the website www.milehighendurance.com and note there is a new menu item called "Blog". Under that you will see MHE Blog and Photos. In the MHE Blog you will see my complete write up and step by step exploration of the new features in Workout Builder and Annual Training Plan. Okay, let's get into today's interview with Terry Laughlin, founder of TI. Let me start with the reason I wanted to get him on the show. We have been focusing this northern hemisphere "off season" on topics related to form, technique, strength/balance to create the greatest opportunity for efficiency and injury prevention when your season begins in earnest. Back in episode #48, Khem and I interviewed coach David Warden on the topic of bio mechanics. In that interview, David mentioned getting coaching help from Terry Laughlin of TI and how it helped improve his speed and efficiency in the water from a below average swimmer to a top ten percent swimmer. Well I took a mental note during that interview. I too studied TI In my first year or so of triathlon. It's been a while since I read the book and I thought it would be great to bring Terry to all of you. I hope you have read TI, taken the course work, or receive coaching. Whether you have or you haven't, I think you will find Terry has a talent for teaching swimming technique. You will hear how incredibly well he describes techniques and feel of the water for streamlining and power. We're going to have Terry back in a few weeks or so to talk about "the ability to repeat effective swimming motions (or strokes) for a duration, and at a pace, of your choosing." We also talk about the 3 M's of Endurance: Metabolic, Motor, Mental. Speaking of upcoming interviews, let's talk about the lineup. Kane Russell To talk about the Neuro Halo next week. I gave a little intro last week. The one thing I'll add is that there is a potential surprise guest that will join Kane when we talk. We're waiting to get confirmation, so I'll keep it a mystery. If it gets confirmed during the week I'll put a post of FB and T to let you all know. Amanda Stevens To talk to us about - Fill in the blank. We want your help with questions for Amanda. Here's what we're going to do. I'm going to put a poll out there on twitter and facebook. I'm going to put 2 or 3 poll choices out there. Some of the topics Amanda and I kicked around when we spoke earlier this week were, 1) Nutrition, 2) Amanda's Swim Instruction , 3) how to identify and avoid over-training. Look for those polls and please, please respond Audi Power of Four Ski Mountaineering Race We are in talks with these guys, but nothing is confirmed yet. Brian Burk Author of "Running To Leadville" Folks, please do me a huge favor this week. Take two seconds to open up your Facebook app and type Mile High Endurance into the search field and follow the podcast. Please do the same thing on Twitter at MileHighPodcast. Also, please take another minute this week to pass along the podcast to a friend or relative who is into endurance sports or health and fitness in general. The referrals and growth are much appreciated. Please also give some love to Terry Laughlin and Total Immersion and go to their Facebook page and website to learn more. If you have been out to the www.milehighendurance.com website this week, you have seen some changes. There are now sub menu items on the website. I've also changed some of the content. Where there used to be a menu item for "Episodes", that has been reworded to "Interviews" and then there are sub menu page selections for 2016 and 2017 interviews. I've also added the date of each episode and made it much more mobile friendly. There were also a few links that were broken and are now fixed. Stay tuned, stay informed, and enjoy the triathlon journey!
Terry Laughlin founded Total Immersion at age 29 while he was considering a change of career. He coached kids since age 21 but he had no experience coaching adults until he held his first camp in 1989. The camp was a success and also personally fulfilling for Terry. A business was born. Total Immersion led to his first book, also titled Total Immersion, camps, ebooks, and a fleet of Total Immersion certified coaches around the world. We talk about his progression over the years, his favorite Olympic swimmer, Tim Ferris, his suggestions for new swimmers, his articles about financial risk, and a lot more. KeyWords: Swimming, Total Immersion, Water, Drills, Injury We were very excited to get the chance to talk to the creator of Total Immersion swimming, Terry Laughlin, on the show today. An extra bonus was having one of the Master Coaches of Total Immersion, Susan Atkinson join us to add her experience learning TI, Teaching TI and her medical perspective on clients. Swimming is something that can open up traditional swim training but also provide comfort to pursue many other water based sports like surfing, diving, kite-boarding and Kayaking.

We chat with Terry Laughlin from Total Immersion. Terry has developed a method of improving your swimming that has helped hundreds of thousands of swimmers and triathletes worldwide to swim smoother. He's an expert at helping people fix the weaknesses in their stroke so they can move naturally through the water with grace and ease. In our chat with Terry he talks about: How he improved the speed of swimmers in the ‘slow lane' to being much closer to that of the ‘fast lane' swimmers Using the feel of the water to increase your speed rather than thinking technically about the stroke The one thing you should focus on with your head position for more relaxed swimming
