With libraries struggling for limited resources in many communities around the world, growing politically motivated protests, and some people questioning libraries' relevance, it is more important than ever to ensure a library's services and programs meet the needs of the local community. Small and rural libraries, in particular, struggle to survive if not well supported by their community members. In this episode, Beth and Jane interview Dianne Connery, previous Director and current Development Director of Pottsboro Area Public Library in Texas (US). On the verge of closing its doors, Dianne led a group of dedicated stakeholders who transformed this small, rural library into the vibrant community-gathering place it is today. She shares her experiences and strategies that worked for her to engage her local community and ensure the library met their needs. She also shares her opinions about how this process may look different for rural versus larger or more urban libraries.

Today's conversation with Joanie was fascinating as she is (one of the only!) proud advocates of a hybrid role, providing it's the right type of hybrid and with the right family. Having had a long career working in the music industry, working backstage with A-listers managing all their catering she came into the private sector already well versed in working with UHNW demanding clients. She openly admits it took her along time and a lot of patience to actually break into the industry, but she finally did and hasn't looked back. All of her roles have been a hybrid involving cooking, house management and service – which has always worked very well for her. Coincidentally she has also recently been to The International Butler Academy in the Netherlands (just like some of our previous guests) and absolutely loved her time there and would highly recommend to others.

I have enjoyed being a part of the Girl Scout council cookie entrepreneur program selling over 1000 boxes per season including corporate partnerships with Hopdoddy, Amys Ice Cream and People Fund. I love being a part of a large multilevel troop where I can share my passion and experiences with others. I love badges, journeys and travel. As a member of the Texas/US congregation who traveled to Cyprus in 2017, 2019 and 2021 as a true Girl Guide exchange program. I have been able to participate in various roles including the local cookie vendor selection committee, media girls, press corps, GSUSA National Merchandising Committee, Citrus Trail Blazer troop and of course there are all the opportunities that I applied for and didn’t get accepted too. That is ok – I learned to persevere, to ask why and what could I do better. As a homeschooler I have time to pursue my passions and discover new ones – I take classes at the local community college. In addition to Girl Scouts, I am involved with SWENext National Advisory Board, 4-H photography, Girls Who Code, SWENext club, volunteering at local library, with Reinvented Magazine as their Marketing Campaign Director and starting my own business. I am an accidental athlete, focusing on strength building sports after bullying in 8th grade because I didn’t look like everyone else - Archery, Obstacle Course racing (like American Ninja Warrior), track, tennis, golf, rock climbing, strength and conditioning.
