Coming off an important victory over arch rival Frederick High, Thomas Johnson boys soccer coach Jonathan Thayil is this week's guest on The Final Score podcast. Thayil chats with host Greg Swatek about a momentous week for the Patriots soccer program, during which they honored the man that started it 50 years ago, Fred Dayton, and then went out and pulled out a 3-2 victory over the Cadets on a late goal by junior midfielder Jordan Tema to even their record at 2-2-2 on the season. The coach talked about why his team is so good on set pieces and how they determine playing time for two capable goalies. Thayil also talks about how he got his starts in soccer and coaching, why he was so bad a traditional American football and how that shaped his future and the professional team overseas that he supports. Prior to that conversation, FNP sports writer Alexander Dacy joins Greg to discuss the Urbana girls flag football team's upcoming game this weekend against a team from Georgia, his thoughts on the week that was in traditional football in Frederick County and this week's county golf championships at Clustered Spires.
The C/Z Records 'Deep Six' compilation is a thing of legend. An early document of a nascent Seattle scene that would be national news within five years, the comp features several bands that had yet to put out any recorded music, including Melvins, Soundgarden, and Andrew Wood's first band, Malfunkshun, plus tracks from Green River, Skin Yard, and the biggest band in the scene at the time, the U-Men. Kim Thayil of Soundgarden joins the show to talk about how the compilation came about and how this six-band compilation serves as a cultural artifact of the foundation of the Seattle alternative scene. We're pretty big fans of vintage Gretsch guitars over here at High Gain HQ. Especially the S-100, with its indispensable phase switch. If it's good enough for Kim Thayil of Soundgarden it's good enough for us. So when we got a line on the new Guild S-100 Polara Kim Thayil signature guitars, we had to try them. We were not dissappointed. Enjoy! Like the show? Follow us at these fine establishments: Patreon || https://www.patreon.com/thehighgain Instagram || @thehighgain Web || https://www.thehighgain.com
In the beginning of the episode, you will hear my guest Jeet Thayil read from his book, Names Of The Women — women whose paths crossed with Christ, and who, it is said, stayed by him during the crucifixion. And after.I have been fortunate to read so many books since I started hosting this podcast. Each book is as wonderful and as compelling as the next. And then a book comes along, like Names Of The Women that holds the craft of writing to a higher standard.Let me tantalizingly cycle back to that in a minute.Penguin had sent me a copy of a book compiled and edited by Jeet — The Penguin Book Of Indian Poets — an almost 1000-page thick compendium of Indian poetry. The book was years in the making and I am sure it will be around years for the taking. But when I had gone over to interview Jeet's father, the famous journalist and author, TJS George, an earlier guest on this show, Jeet gave me a copy of Names Of The Women. And it gave me the chills in a way that very few books have done before. It is a hauntingly evocative story of the lives of those women.Despite being less than 200 pages long, Names Of The Women is aching to be a book three times its length. The substance is such. And when you pack all that into 200 pages, it makes it powerful.Thayil's writing is a masterclass in narrative storytelling, rich with literary devices that enhance his already compelling craft. So much for what I think about the book. Let's talk to Jeet.ABOUT JEET THAYILJeet Thayil is the author of four novels and five collections of poetry. His essays, poetry and short fiction have appeared in the New York Review of Books,Granta, TLS, The London Magazine, The Guardian and The Paris Review, among other venues. Kim Thayil was a co-founder and guitarist of rock band Soundgarden. Kim joined Behind the Setlist to talk about the songs and setlists of the band's final tour in 2017. Formed 33 years earlier in Seattle, Soundgarden played its final show on May 17, 2017 at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, MI. Singer Chris Cornell died the next morning. In addition to helping spawn Seattle's grunge scene in the late '80s and reshape popular music in the '90s, Soundgarden had an incredible string of successful albums in the '90s: 1991's Badmotorfinger, 1994's Superunknown (No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart) and 1996's Down on the Upside (No. 2 on the Billboard 200). It had three songs reach No. 2 on the Alternative Airplay chart: "Black Hole Sun" in 1994, and "Pretty Noose" and "Burden in My Hand" in 1996. All Hail Kim Thayil! . . . YOU DON'T KNOW MOJACK is a podcast dedicated to exploring the entire SST catalogue, in order, from start to finish. During the podcast we will discuss all the releases that are part of our core DNA, as well as many lesser-known releases that deserve a second chance, or releases that we are discovering for the very first time (we actually don't know Mojack!). First and foremost we are fans, and acknowledge that we are not perfect and don't know everything – sometimes the discussion is more about a time, place, feeling, personal experience or random tangents, and less about the facts (but we will try to get to the facts too). Holmberg's Morning Sickness - The Entertainment Drill - Wednesday September 8, 2021
2021 marks the 30th anniversary of Soundgarden's landmark album, Badmotorfinger. When they released that record the band were on the verge of exploding, with Seattle quickly becoming the epicentre of the music universe, with Pearl Jam releasing Ten and Nirvana releasing Nevermind that same year. But as Kim explains in this interview, from the day in 1984 when he formed Soundgarden with bassist Hiro Yamamoto and vocalist Chris Cornell, who was also playing drums at that point, they were never willing to bend towards the mainstream – instead they'd make it come to them. And come it did. We talk about the band's formation and rise in this interview, what life was like in Seattle as the scene was exploding, the tragic moment Kim heard of Kurt Cobain's passing, and Kim's memories of Chris Cornell, who we lost in 2017.

What it means to be a black Christian woman in the UK is at the heart of Chine McDonald’s new book, God Is Not a White Man. Part memoir and part theological and historical study, McDonald looks back at the role the Christian faith has played over the centuries in perpetuating ideas of white supremacy. She tells Tom Sutcliffe that black women in the church have stayed silent too long. The writer Jeet Thayil re-imagines the story of the New Testament through the eyes of the women suppressed and erased from the Gospels. Names of the Women brings to life fifteen women whose importance at the Crucifixion highlights the power they once had. Thayil was born into a Syrian Christian family in India and was inspired to write this work by the defiance and authority of his grandmother. In 2011 when the Occupy movement set up camp around St Paul’s Cathedral in London, Canon Giles Fraser was caught between his pastoral care of the protestors, the needs of the church and the demands of the City of London. He suffered a crisis of faith and mental health. In Chosen: Lost and Found Between Christianity and Judaism, Fraser explores his own religious roots, and discovers the healing power of theology for the individual and society. Producer: Katy Hickman

As our nation remains as bitterly divided as ever, and this year of despair and madness draws to a close, we look to a few sacred things that we can all agree on, no matter what side of politics (or reality) we reside. In the world of rock n roll, nothing is as reliable as the prevalence of an epic beard on the faces of our favorite rock stars. All the greats have had them from time to time, but only a select few can trace at least some portion of their rock star status to that furry thing on their chin. An epic beard is something to behold, and who better to help us celebrate this than the man who also possesses a beard of some epic-ness himself. ATTT is delighted to welcome back our fuzzy friend Dustin Prince to help count down the most iconic, the most striking, the most epic of all beards in music. Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil jumps into the Delorean with Kyle Meredith to revisit the Screaming Life/FOPP compilation, the "Room Without a View" single, and how the Seattle band found inspiration in The Melvins, Malfunkshun, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and The Beatles. The guitarist also recalls writing page-turner music for the Encarta 95 program, the label issuing the Alive in the Superunknown CD-ROM, and forming The No WTO Combo alongside Krist Novoselic and Jello Biafra. Upon their return to the present, Thayil also says he was about to do a tour with The Blasters’ Dave Alvin before the shutdown, and then considers the prospects of a future solo album. "I last saw Jeet at the last public event I attended before the UK’s pandemic lockdown – it was in London, for a memorial. After the service, we drank, and talked; and mingled briefly in the crowd; we parted without saying goodbye. So this book as an object holds layers of meaning: memories of travel and of both happy and sad times spent with friends." Preti Taneja thinks about the writer Jeet Thayil and reads from Fulcrum NO. 4, an edition in which Thayil edited a selection of 56 Indian poets under the (beautiful!) title Give the Sea Change and It Shall Change. Writers Preti references include: Henry Derozio, Nissim Ezekiel, Srikanth Reddy, Mukta Sambrani. She also discusses Threads, by Sandeep Parmar, Bhanu Kapil and Nisha Ramayya and Debt Night, a piece she herself wrote in Detours. As part of the big four bands breaking out of the Seattle "grunge" scene in the early 1990s, Soundgarden was a combination that was not quite metal or punk. We look at why their record Badmotorfinger acts like such a strong signifier of meaning in the wake of Chris Cornell's death.
O "grunge" está para Seattle assim como a Guild S100 está para Kim Thayil. A história que marcou parte da sonoridade dos Soundgarden.

If you’re a pop musician of South Asian descent, not many like you have yet reached the toppermost of the poppermost. Some really famous ones include M.I.A., Norah Jones and Tony Kanal from No Doubt. Soundgarden lead guitarist Kim Thayil, whose folks came from India, was among the first. As a kid, acclaimed new singer-songwriter Bhi Bhiman, whose family emigrated from Sri Lanka, looked to Thayil as something of a role model. Which was wise, because Thayil is one of the brightest, coolest rock musicians one could hope to meet. Now Bhiman and Thayil aren’t just mutual fans, they’re also friends. We put them together at KEXP’s studios in Seattle for a Talkhouse Music Podcast, and sure, they talked about being self-described “outsiders in rock & roll,” but they talked about a lot of other interesting things, too: their musical backstories, ruminations on the nature of pleasure and pain, the role of baseball in assimilation, their first guitars, the Chi-Lites, Nirvana’s nickname for Thayil, dealing with fans and, perhaps most important of all, the meaning of the word “epistemological.”
