Legal analyst and former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti joins Zerlina on the pod to help break down yesterday's January 6th hearing. Renato Mariotti is a former federal prosecutor, legal analyst, practicing lawyer, and activist who fights for the rule of law and the protection of our electoral systems from attack.After graduating from the University of Chicago and Yale Law School, Renato clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals and worked as a litigation attorney.  After five years in private practice, he returned home to Chicago to become a federal prosecutor.Renato spent almost ten years as a federal prosecutor, he investigated and prosecuted hundreds of cases in a wide variety of areas including child exploitation, human trafficking, cybercrime, gun trafficking, tax evasion, fraud, obstruction of justice, public corruption, narcotics trafficking, and more.As a federal prosecutor, he was best known as the first person in the nation to prosecute a high-frequency trader under a special provision of the Dodd-Frank Act. From Bio Major to Lobbying for Blockchain Kristin Smith is the Director of External Affairs at The Blockchain Association, a trade association for the blockchain industry. Raised in California. Earned her B.A in Biology and an M.A. in Legislative Affairs from George Washington University. Earned her 2nd M.A. in Communications, Culture and Technology from Georgetown University, and her 3rd graduate degree from NYU where she earned an MBA Smith's first government job was interning for Sen. Conrad Burns. She worked as a legislative assistant in the U.S. Senate, before working as a Deputy Chief of Staff in the U.S. House of Representatives, where she worked on technology policy. Smith has worked at several lobbying firms, The Alpine Group, VogelHood Group and Thompson Coburn, LLC. “After looking at other jobs, you realize lobbying is amazing. The Role of Planning in Stabilizing Distressed Properties August 30, 2011 Many communities have a glut of entitled but unfinished development projects. Depending on the context and scale of the problem, traditional stabilization tools such as code enforcement may prove inadequate or ineffective. In some cases, the best solution for the community may involve relaxing certain regulatory requirements or renegotiating the terms of development agreements. Daniel Shapiro from Robbins, Salomon & Patt and Jessica Schramm from Thompson Coburn discussed a wide range of strategies planners can use to stabilize and reposition distressed properties. Specific strategies covered will include reviewing agreements recorded against property, negotiating development fees, and re-entitling property. They also addressed how planners can assist when development deals turn sour.
