US-China relations during the Biden administration have been marked by competition and rivalry. Many of the aspects of US-China relations of the first Trump presidency were retained by the Biden administration. We have now returned to President Trump. What are we likely to see now in US foreign policy under a second Trump presidency; what will be US-China relations going forward? To explore all this I invited back into the Virtual Studio my good colleague Yves Tiberghien. Yves currently is a Professor of Political Science, Director Emeritus of the Institute of Asian Research, Konwakai Chair in Japanese Research, and Director of the Center for Japanese Research at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada. Yves recently completed a study leave and was a visiting scholar at the Taipei School of Economics and Political Science (2023-2024). Yves specializes in comparative political economy and international political economy with an empirical focus on China, Japan, and Korea. A French pianist applauded for his versatility and wide-ranging repertoire, Cédric Tiberghien has an openness to explore innovative concert formats and dynamic chamber music partnerships. He's recorded over 20 solo albums and over 15 collaborative ones, has played concerts and recitals in all parts of the world, with the Berlin Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, the London Philharmonic, the Sydney Symphony, among many others. He was fascinated by a grand piano when he was 2 years old, and started lessons as soon as he was able. In this conversation, Cédric takes us through his approach to music and performance with joy and excitement, and his musical selections demonstrate the full breadth of his approach to his craft. Cédric Tiberghien performs The Cage Project with Musica Viva at the Sydney Festival on 23-25 January, before heading to Canberra and Melbourne.

It is with great pleasure that I have invited my colleague Yves Tiberghien back into the Virtual Studio for this episode on ‘Shaking the Global Order'. The US-China relationship has been marked by continuing competition and rivalry. So, I sat down again with Yves Tiberghien to examine what the current state of the US-China relationship is today while remaining mindful of the upcoming US election. I was particularly curious to see what the impact, if any, of the recent visit to Beijing by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan might have had on current US-China relations. Yves is a Professor of Political Science, Director Emeritus of the Institute of Asian Research, Konwakai Chair in Japanese Research, and Director of the Center for Japanese Research at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada. Yves recently completed a study leave and was a visiting scholar at the Taipei School of Economics and Political Science (2023-2024). Yves is an International Steering Committee Member at Pacific Trade and Development Conference (PAFTAD) and a visiting professor at Tokyo University and Sciences Po, Paris. He has held other visiting positions at National Chengchi University (Taiwan), GRIPS (Tokyo), and the Jakarta School of Public Policy (Indonesia). This increasing tension seemed to reach a dramatic moment when a high-altitude balloon originating from China flew across North American airspace from January 28 to February 4, 2023 only to be shot down over U.S. territorial waters off the coast of South Carolina. As a result China suspended all military to military communications. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Antony Blinken postponed a visit. US-China relations languished until the recent Xi-Biden summit on November 15th that took place near San Francisco at the margin of the APEC Summit. So, what is the current state of the US-China relationship today and how are the two reshaping the global order in the face of US-China relations? Yves currently is a Professor of Political Science, Director Emeritus of the Institute of Asian Research, Konwakai Chair in Japanese Research, and Director of the Center for Japanese Research at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada. It takes Beethoven's many sets of themes and variations for solo piano as its starting point, and weaves in major sets by others composers, in Vol 1 by Mozart, Schumann and Webern. James Jolly caught up with the pianist in New York, by Zoom, to talk about the project and find out his thinking on the programme of this first volume. Elle fait partie de ces personnes qui ont des engagements chevillés au corps. Car elle s'est donnée la mission de prouver qu'on pouvait tricoter, produire et confectionner des vêtements 100% en France. Son parcours est semé de reprises d'usines. Des usines qui fermaient leurs portes car la vague de délocalisations et de perte de savoir-faire qui a frappé et qui frappe la France est d'une violence sans précédent. Voici un extrait du prochain épisode avec Karine Renouil-Tiberghien, celle qui reprend les usines françaises. Cet épisode est issu de la nouvelle série « Elles font la mode ». Vous êtes vous déjà demandés comment le t-shirt que vous portez avait été fabriqué ? Non mais je veux dire, VRAIMENT fabriqué ? Pas seulement dans quel pays et dans quelles conditions. Mais qui est l'agricultrice ou l'agriculteur qui a récolté la matière première, qui est la ou le modéliste, la teinturière ou le teinturier, comment fonctionne l'usine dans laquelle il a été confectionné… Dans cette série « Elles font la mode », j'ai décidé de partie à la rencontre de celles que l'on ne voit pas, à ces femmes qui oeuvrent, dans l'ombre, à la fabrication de nos vêtements. Loin des visages d'Instagram. Elles sont agricultrice, modéliste, teinturière, travaille dans la confection ou dans les usines de fabrication et elles font la mode.

Comment passer de 1 à plus de 8 M€ de CA en 8 ans en étant fabriquant de textile made in France ? Quand on évoque le retail et le e-commerce, on pense souvent : acquisition, fidélisation, taux de conversion, solutions de paiement, bref distribution. Pourtant, il existe un aspect essentiel et insuffisamment évoqué selon moi, c'est celui de la production. En effet, sans produits, point de ventes ! Pour en parler, j'ai la chance de recevoir Karine Renouil-Tiberghien, copropriétaire Des Manufactures de Layettes et Tricots. Si vous suivez l'actualité de notre écosystème, vous la connaissez certainement. En décembre dernier, avec son associé Arnaud de Belabre, Karine a cherché à racheter la marque Camaïeu mise aux enchères après sa faillite. C'est finalement Célio qui a remporté la mise, mais cette opération a été l'occasion de mettre un très gros coup de projecteur sur son activité. En effet, Karine et Arnaud sont à la tête d'une entreprise qui fabrique, en France, des tissus et vêtements pour bébé mais également des pulls, des bonnets ou encore des articles de sport et de mode. Leurs clients sont des acteurs importants de la grande distribution comme Carrefour, Auchan, Leclerc, ou Kiabi mais aussi des marques comme Bompard, Aigle ou Balzac Paris. Nous parlons donc bien d'un business model wholesale. Pour structurer notre conversation, nous parlons bien sûr du marché et même des marchés sur lesquels se positionne notre invitée. Nous poursuivons sur les sujets de production à proprement parler. Les Manufactures de Layettes et Tricots possèdent 3 sites de production, 2 à Roanne et un autre à Pau et emploie 85 personnes. L'idée : comprendre ce que veut dire “Fabriquer en France”. Et croyez-moi, nous allons dans du très concret ! Enfin, nous revenons sur l'épisode Camaïeu. Pourquoi avoir envisagé le rachat de cette marque ? Le projet a déclenché un formidable enthousiasme dans les médias et sur les réseaux sociaux. Alors, la question qui vient naturellement est la suivante : qu'est-ce que cela à changer pour l'entreprise ? Bonne écoute, toujours sans coupure !!

Au programme de Des Mauls et Débats on revient sur un week-end très compliqué pour le rugby français, néanmoins il y avait du bon avec notamment la performance de Tiberghien. Yves is the Director Emeritus of the Institute of Asian Research at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and is currently a Professor of Political Science. The Director of the Centre for Japanese Research and the current holder of the Konwakai Chair in Japanese Research at the University of British Columbia. He is also a Distinguished Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Foundation of Canada and the Canadian PAFTAD Chair. His most recent publication is The East Asian Covid-19 Paradox, published in 2022 with Cambridge Elements. So come join Yves and I as we explore the impact of Shinzo Abe.

Die junge Geigerin Alina Ibragimova stellt immer wieder unter Beweis, dass sie eine der aufregendsten Künstlerinnen ihres Faches ist. Nach Mozart, Schubert und Brahms präsentiert sie mit ihrem Klavierpartner Cédric Thiberghien nun die Violinsonaten von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

It was my pleasure to welcome back into Virtual Studio our University of British Columbia (UBC) colleague, Yves Tiberghien. The order of the day was to examine closely China's position, that is Xi Jinping's and the Party and Government's position on Russia. What is the impact of the April 4th partnership and then the Russian aggression against Ukraine? Also, I wanted Yves to describe for us the state relations between the EU and China. Yves is currently a Professor of Political Science and the Konwakai Chair in Japanese Research at the University of British Columbia. He is also a Distinguished Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Foundation of Canada and the Canadian PAFTAD Chair. We actually are finding Yves in Paris. Diplômé des Beaux Arts de Paris, Raphaël Tiberghien s'est également formé à la Slade School of fine art de Londres. Le travail de l'artiste explore les lisières entre le langage et les formes plastiques, en utilisant notamment la sculpture, l'édition et l'installation sonore. Il cherche à inscrire ses interventions dans une mobilité entre les disciplines afin de dégager de nouvelles cohérences. En 2016 il cofonde l'atelier Le Houloc avec 16 autres artistes à Aubervilliers, et il enseigne actuellement  le volume dans la classe préparatoire aux écoles d'art de la ville d'Évry.
