Numbers or people? What should the focus be in sales, and are they mutually exclusive? Today Jeff and Christie welcome the very long-time friend of the show, DeJuan Brown to answer these questions. DeJuan, Director, Solutions Specialist - SLG at Microsoft discusses the importance of redemptive leadership, a process that emphasis taking care of your people, and in turn driving revenue. Most salespeople have been in positions where hard-line quotas and threats of being replaced were their "motivation." But redemptive leadership works as an investment in people and understanding what drives individuals. And guess what? Salespeople that feel supported and secure perform better! They also talk about how this change can happen in different sales organizations, the top down vs. bottom up approach, and DeJuan gives tips on how to wisely and proactively bring that change. Today Jeff and Dave dive into the oeuvre of Roman historian Gaius Sallustius Crispus (known as “Sallust” or “Crispy” to his friends), particularly sections 6-13 of his Bellum Catilinae. Dave argues that with this work Sallust invents the “monograph”, zeroing in on a narrow subject as his “hook” rather than trying to “do it all” more broadly and blandly. In the eight chapters referenced above Sallust zips through about 1200 years of Roman history, from Aeneas to the 1st century BC, highlighting the moral apex of the Republic down to the money-grubbing, wine-chugging, disco-clubbing depravities of his own day. Will you agree with Jeff that Sallust is a bit of a hypocrite, thundering against luxuries from the terraces of his lavish Quirinal gardens, or will you side with Dave and give old Sally a break?

Today Jeff and Raqi are joined in the studio by Brandon Biggs, inclusive designer and Engineer with The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute (SKI), the foremost organization for vision research in the U. s. Brandon is involved in three major projects at SKI, including the development of the Cam IO app, which allows blind and visually impaired individuals to digitally annotate and navigate objects, such as appliances, iNavigate, an indoor way-finding app, and Audiom, an audio variation of Maps.  In this podcast, Brandon will focus on Audiom. Brandon shares his journey to Smith-Kettlewell by way of his educational path, which traversed not only the U. S., but to Italy, Malta, The Netherlands and Canada as well. He also describes the similarities and differences in the ways those countries approach their disabled communities with accessibility efforts, many of which are more focused on Blindness initiatives, but are behind the U. S. in other areas.  Brandon intends to advance his career in app development and data management as a scientist at Smith-Kettlewell, and will relocate to Georgia Tech University, in Atlanta, Ga. to pursue his PhD.   The Audiom project is one which involves use of maps, to plot out the geographical layout of cities and buildings, and to convert that data into an audio format for use by visually impaired users.   Audiom uses real world sounds to depict points of data for users, such as dishes clattering for restaurants, or beeps for ATM machines. Audiom also uses traditional conventions such as first person and list view from Video games like Swamp or Heroes Call which are quickly spatially conveyed into useful navigational information for blind users.  Stay tuned down the road as this project promises to evolve into a helpful means for mapping geographical data into a usable  tool for the Blind. Be sure to set aside a few minutes to hear this fascinating guest speak of his passion for his work and its future impact on the lives of the Blind and Visually Impaired  around the World. Episode 14. The Championship Forum with Jeff Hancher typically discusses leadership skills, but these skills can only take you so far. Having a strong memory will set you apart as a leader. Can you teach someone to strengthen their memory? Or are you stuck with your biology? Today Jeff interviews me to talk about how you can boost your memory and become a better leader. Why should leaders care about proactively sharpening their memory skills?Leaders are faced with a variety of emergent situations requiring them to quickly think, internalize, and recall pertinent information. Part of memory is wanting to remember. Tie it to your goals and your purpose. Understanding the mechanics of memory will help you remember people’s names, prepare and deliver speeches, and keep up with people half your age.“It’s not always that you’re forgetting. It’s that you never took the time to learn.” - Jennifer Little-FleckThe Science of MemoryWe used to think that you were born with the number of neurons you would have forever, but now we know that neurogenesis takes place in the hippocampus. Your prefrontal cortex takes in new information and within six seconds, it decides if it is important. If your brain is interested, the memory is stored in your hippocampus. The best way to work on taking that information from short-term to long-term memory is by practicing memory retrieval. Some ways to remember:The testing effectAfter reviewing new material, write down what you know about a subject or create a worksheet for yourself rather than just studying. Do this over and over. When you do, you are "practicing" remembering, which will allow you to recall the information more quickly and accurately than studying.Make emotional connectionsStorytelling is another way to remember things. The part of your brain that stores memories works with the amygdala, which processes emotions. Always try to make your stories positive because the brain wants to remember good things.Employ techniques from great memory masters like Jim Kwik, who teaches the BE SUAVE technique for remembering names.BE SUAVE:B - Believe in your ability to remember.E - Exercise your brain.S - Say the name (or thing you want to remember).U - Use it in a sentence. A - Ask a question.V - Visualize it.E - End with it. Say their name (or the information) as you close the encounter.MoveMemory is improved with exercise and frequent movement, as it stimulates chemicals in the brain that boost neurotransmitter levels.VisualizeCreating a picture in your mind of something you want to remember is incredibly powerful, especially when you make it slightly ridiculous.Incorporate a motor skill into your memory. FDR, a former U.S. President was known for his ability to remember names. He would imagine writing a person’s name on their forehead with his finger. By visualizing it on their forehead, he would remember it.Optimize your health - diet does make a differenceYour body functions best when it is using ketones for energy. You can create ketones through a ketogenic diet or by delaying your first meal of the day by intermittent fasting.SleepSleep is a key part of the memory consolidation process. Research shows that when given the same amount of information to study, students who studied for a little while and then got a full night of sleep did better than those who studied late into the night.Connect with Jeff:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeff-hancher/Instagram: @thechampionforumFacebook: The Champion Forum Podcast with Jeff HancherEmail: jeffhancher@thechampionforum.comConnect with JenniferInstagram: @autobiologywithjennifer

You are probably seeing a lot more volatility in your sales numbers these days. Trying to read into them too much, is the mistake. Today Jeff plainly says, "Forecasts are out the window."   It's a fools game to think you can predict any customers actions right now. And also foolish to hold yourself accountable for results you can't control. So don't get bogged down wasting time, energy and resources trying to understand client decisions or on things you can't anticipate. Work harder on the things you can control.  We have a LinkedIn Community where we're posting clips and having discussions about the episodes. Join us!
