It's KPW's 6th Birthday and to celebrate, we add the original co-host, Tom Stephens and first guest, Adam Edelen, to the show. We've got ethical issues in State Government, education lawsuits, the tick tock for TikTok, and Tres has thoughts on snow removal and related issues in Lexington.
A key component of our 2023-2027 Strategic Plan is the incorporation of constituent voice. We have worked hard to ensure opportunities to share thoughts and feedback are varied, meaningful, and involve intentional outreach to identified focal groups and historically underserved populations. This includes our annual student survey in the spring, meetings with our parent advisory committees, one-on-one or small group conversations with families and/or students, superintendent focus group chats with high school students, and more. In both the planning year and Year 1 of the Strategic Plan, we also offered a survey to all families, community members, and staff. This survey was almost identical to the student survey and was approximately 25 questions long. Heading into this year, we took a closer look at that survey and brainstormed ways to make it more relevant and accessible to those completing it, in hopes that it would generate higher participation and more robust, actionable feedback for staff overseeing implementation. What we came up with is a survey that is just 7 questions long! We truly hope all of our families, community members, and staff will take a few minutes to complete the survey and provide their honest feedback by Friday, February 14. Themes and common questions/concerns will be pulled from the responses and used to shape our Year 3 Strategic Plan improvement actions, as well as our Integrated Guidance Plan, which includes our Student Investment Account, High School Success, and Early Literacy Plans. Our featured students are from Glencoe's Leadership class. On Saturday, December 21, Glencoe High School's lobby was once again transformed into a one-stop shop for students and families in the Glencoe feeder group who needed a little help for the holidays. This has become a favorite annual tradition of Glencoe leadership students and their advisor, Tom Stephens. Together, they staged new toys, games, and stuffed animals; as well as clothing, non-perishable food, and even Christmas trees for families to choose from. At designated times, families came into the shop, selected what they needed, and had the option of enjoying hot cocoa as students wrapped their presents. The following Monday, students delivered items to families who weren't able to make it to the shop. In all, more than 134 families representing more than 400 children were served through this innovative and generous program. To the leadership students, Mr. Stephens, and everyone whose donations made the event possible, we say a heartfelt thank you! You make us Proud to be HSD! There will be no school for all students on Monday, January 20, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. School resumes on Tuesday, January 21. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Please add the address to your “safe sender” list to make sure you always receive the latest issue. In this area, the name John Faison means a lot around the sports sphere. Last Fall, the local high school and collegiate game official suffered a terrible accident at his home. A fundraiser is taking place Sunday to help in Mr. Faison's recovery. High school friend Tom Stephens is one of the folks that put the event together, and he lets us know what to expect.

Join hosts Gabe Cook, Grant Hutchison and Martyn Greatest-Showman as they pitch up in the mud, with the Neutral Cider Hotel!Up first, the guys celebrate the missing event from the cider calendar; Glastonbury Festival. This year's celebration is cancelled for obvious reasons, but the guys go through their festival stories including backstage antics, Grant's joyless view of the magic, and Gabe's brother and the terror of the murderous horses. Ten points for guessing correctly which host brings up the toilet humour first! Martyn then cracks a bottle of Little Pomona's Table Perry, with a playlist from our own Grant, and Scott takes the guys through his highlight of years in the festival game. Then, in the news, it's a maker from the fruit episode; Kopparberg in the news! Freedom of speech and fake news in the world of cider, before Original Sin's New York Dry Cider comes onto the market, with targeted advertising for the product. And finally, Grant's opinion is needed on the smoky chill of a new product. This week's interview is with an apple grower, pro-juicer and cider maker with a passion for regenerative agriculture. From his family farm in Sussex Tom Stephens has created a multi-award winning juice brand with Wobblegate, one of the first modern cider tap rooms in the country, and a progressive, unapologetically West Sussex cidery in Rebel Root. Featuring all the book plugs in best ways, the guys chat about all things; traditional cider vs new world, branding and ethos, Bramley and the cider drinker and running businesses with a young family. This week's tasting is two new ciders from Rebel Root, in cans! Down Time and Gypsy Soul are cracked, studied and questioned properly in the Hotel! Then it's time to dive into your Listener Questions including a Speakpipe message from a certain fan in Washington DC, and some inquisitive words from New Zealand! Featuring copper pipes and Italian advice, the guys have a good time with this one!Thank you for listening and please leave us a message at our Speakpipe as well as join us on our socials below! The Team:Gabe is a cider expert: The CiderologistGrant has two cider businesses: Re:Stalk and Aeble Cider ShopMartyn loves to write about cider: CiderShitThe Rest of The Team:Executive Producer/Editor: Scott RiggsMusic: Billy KennedyConnect:Instagram: NeutralCiderHotelFacebook: NeutralCiderHotelTwitter: NeutralCiderPodListen and share episodes on our website: https://www.neutralciderhotel.com/ Leave us a voicemail: https://www.speakpipe.com/neutralciderhotel

We're back with our 4th-quarter episode selected by our Patreon backers and it's definitely kind of an "old-school" episode by our standards where we take a specifically-biblical theme and unpack and discuss it. This time, we're ruminating on the topic of Eden and all of the themes of paradise, fall, and "first-ness" that come with it. The episode starts with a quick acknowledgement that 2020 remains stressful at this current juncture, but move pretty quickly into a great Patreon question from Tom Stephens who asks "What is the strangest/weirdest/most difficult game mechanic you've ever had to deal with in game?" Given all of our varied game histories, that generates some fun and interesting discussion to warm us up for our scripture and then our main topic of Eden which went to some very interesting places. We discuss the Biblical Eden and some tropes and themes that tie back to it, but also "Eden Worlds" as seen in sci-fi and some other fun digressions. Mentioned in this episode: Jewish Fairy Tales and Legends, by Gertrude Landa, Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars books (and a podcast to go with them), the SCP Foundation Wiki, Scripture: Genesis 2: 8-9, Isaiah 51:3, Ezekiel 28:13-15, Revelation 22:1-5

This week we have more unstructured, conversational episode for you. Grant and Peter realized back in episode 173 that we'd like to talk about when players know what the GM is planning, but as we talked about the upcoming episode, we all realized that what we had was more of a discussion and a collection of observations than a collection of structured advice. We start with the usual check-in, which has Peter and Grant both craving classic genre fiction and Jenny the Goblin Queen a bit under the weather. We then move into our Patreon question this week , which comes from Tom Stephens, who asks " (as someone who just got a MLS degree recently myself - finished in 2016, this one's for Jenny with a generalized version for the others): What was your most and least favorite class from your library degree program. For the others, what was the most and least favorite class from any training you've had recently or even going back to college? " From there, we launch into a loose collection of advice and observations that comprise the central topic. More than usual, we can see multiple sides of this and talk about when it's useful for the players to know more, when it's not, why you might or might not want to hand out more information in your games, the considerations of various genres, and so on. Mentioned in this episode: Star Power Scripture: Psalm 33:10-11, Proverbs 16:3, Matthew 6:25-34
Our Featured Activity this week is TikTok4Tide. Shortly after the statewide closures in mid-March, Glencoe math teacher and soccer coach Tom Stephens began hearing from students about family members who had lost their jobs and were struggling. Wondering what he could do to help, the first thing that came to his mind was “what if we had a dance party to raise money for grocery store gift cards?” From there, Stephens created a TikTok4Tide Instagram site and Venmo account and launched a tournament among staff members. For each vote, people were encouraged to donate one dollar. The effort has taken off and has not only involved Glencoe staff, but also students. To date, more than $4,100 has been raised in support of families in need.
In response to anti-government protests the Iraq government shut down the internet six days ago. Coverage returned briefly before the president was due to give a televised address on Sunday allowing social media reports of violence at the demonstrations to be posted. Currently 75% of Iraq is covered by the ban. Kurdistan is unaffected. Mismatch There’s no such thing as normal—so why are we all made to use devices, live in cities or travel in vehicles that are so uniform? Whether it’s a computer accessory that only works for right-handed people or airline seats that are unusable for taller people, we need more inclusive design. We discuss Kat Holmes’ new book Mismatch: How Inclusion Shapes Design. Beatie at the Barbican Singer-songwriter and innovator Beatie Wolfe is showing a “teaser” of her new work at London’s Barbican gallery alongside the launch of a film about her. This environmental protest piece distils 800,000 years of historic data of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere. It will become an interactive visualisation and soundtrack using gaming software. The Lightyear One: a self-charging electric car The Lightyear One is a prototype solar-powered electric car. There are plans to take it into production by 2021. The manufacturer claims a range of 720km in sunny climates and even 400 km in cloudy, wet UK winter. Tom Stephens reports. (Photo: Iraq protests. Credit:Reuters) Producer: Ania Lichtarowicz
Grant's out on vacation in lovely Myrtle Beach, SC this week, so Jenny and Peter tackle a special project—working together to create a unique setting centerpiece for a game Jenny will be running at her library! First, we answer a question from Patreon supporter Tom Stephens, who asks, "What is your favorite item that you've created for use in a game?" With that handled and our Scripture read, we move on to creating a city from scratch. Jenny starts us off with a few basic ideas and restrictions, and everything builds from there—pun intended, of course. What's the economy based on? Why do people come to this city? What makes it unique, geographically and politically? Who lives there, and who is in power? How is it governed? What sort of crime flourishes within its walls? What opportunities are available to player characters who start their careers in this city? And what, exactly, is a forcefield goat? Ideas Jenny had after recording: It’s in a crater, but the crater isn’t even because the meteor came in at an angle. The Shepherding district is on a gentle slope up and out of the crater, and the Glassworking district is basically a straight wall. Might switch Factotum and Shepherding districts so that the mining and stoneworking can be done on a wall, maybe even under an overhang. At least one magic metal node per district is preserved. Always the biggest node. Civic district is Full Of Lawyers to help out the people seeking sanctuary. Scripture: Exodus 31:1-11, Joshua 21:41-45, Hebrews 10:24-25

This week we talked to musician Tom Stephens about his new book "Best Seat in the House". Tom talked to us about what it was like touring with a blind but brilliant musician who didn't want to admit that he was blind.
Author and game designer Greg Stolze joins us once again, this time to talk about systematically creating good gaming sessions! We had Greg on once before, talking about personal horror and Unknown Armies on STG 83, and it's great to have him back to give some excellent game-mastering advice. Greg's also got a Kickstarter for Termination Shock just wrapping up, and will be Kickstarting a second edition of Grim War in early 2019, so definitely check those out! We end up spending a lot of time answering our Patreon question from Tom Stephens this episode, since he asked about how much time we spend researching, recording, and editing for an average episode of Saving the Game. Greg recorded some podcast episodes to promote Termination Shock, and so he's got plenty to add to that discussion as well! After our Scripture readings, we go deep into the hard, practical steps gamemasters can take to build individual sessions and plan their game arcs built into both Termination Shock and Grim War. These are two rather different methods, but both are aimed squarely at new GMs, and designed to teach GMs how to keep players engaged and tell good stories without years of literary theory classes! Both the "playbook" approach of Termination Shock and the "lit-crit" approach of Grim War are worth testing in your own games, so give them a try (and consider picking up these games for more details!) Scripture: Leviticus 19:34, Proverbs 4:6-7, Proverbs 15:22, Luke 6:39-40
We're back with a surprisingly focused episode on sainthood thanks to Jenny's hard work and research! We've only a little bit of off-topic material to discuss: A quick word about the list of questions our Patrons send in, and a brief diversion to discuss Nintendo's Koi Koi game played with hanafuda cards. We also answer Patreon supporter Tom Stephens's question about the one place in the world we'd go, if we could go anywhere at all. After that's done, it's time for a deep dive into sainthood. After all, we'd eventually like to do a full series on individual saints and important Church figures; but we figured we'd need a primer on sainthood first, and Jenny definitely provided! Her research covers what a 'saint' is, how one becomes a canonized saint in the Roman Catholic church, and much more. We also discuss the use of saints as a concept for games and worldbuilding. Resources: The Anglican Communion's Lambeth Conference documents; other Anglican liturgical texts; and STG 107, "Relics and Holy Items". Plus, the Friends at the Table podcast Jenny mentioned! Scripture: Psalm 16:1-3, Romans 8:26-30, Revelation 5:6-8 (all NASB this time)

We take a look at the disturbing trends in Michigan. Emergency Financial Managers are being appointed by the governor to run cities and school boards, particularly in black majority communities, in a dictatorial fashion. As our guest Tom Stephens writes,”The Emergency Financial Manager regime imposed on Detroit is ‘an entirely new and unprecedented form of antidemocratic local government directly controlled by the corporate agents of ‘the 1%’ that is designed to steal everything: land, water, air, lives, and every right not associated with capital.” The first Emergency Financial Managers were appointed to run cities in 2000, but a significant change occurred in 2011 with the passage of Public Act 4, the Local Government and School District Fiscal Accountability Act. This state law gave EFM’s unprecedented power to “exercise any power or authority of any officer, employee, department, board, commission or other similar entity of the local government whether elected or appointed.” Our guests will discuss how the EFM’s are dismantling cities to pave the way for privatization and gentrification and what people in those cities are doing to fight back. This week our AAH on the Road series continues as we go on location to the Chrysler Tech Center where we'll talk with the Vice President of Product Planning, Joe Veltri. We'll be asking him all about Chrysler's barrage of new product and how Chrysler will integrate its platforms with Fiat. We're also curious to know how it is to work with the Italians compared to the Germans. But, we won't be forgetting the news. We're going to talk about some of the managerial shake up going on at GM with Tom Stephens moving out of product planning and Mary Barra stepping in. John McElroy is joined in the Tech Center by the ever-extreme AutoExtremist, Peter De Lorenzo.
GM Vice Chairman, Tom Stephens, said the automaker plans to offer a midsize car in the U.S. with a diesel engine, but he did not mention which model it will be or when it will go on sale. Mopar introduced an electronic vehicle tracking system that lets you locate your car if it gets stolen. The lawnmower land-speed record is back in the USA! All that and more, plus some perspective on the U.S. auto bailouts.
BalanceWalking a high-wire was the dangerous vocation of the world-renown daredevil Karl Wallenda. Whether it was over desert canyons or city streets, the most important aspect of this death-defying act was balance. One wrong step would yield terrible results. The same can be said about the auto industry. Balance is important on several levels, in many arenas. But perhaps the most important area when it comes to a brand are its front line products. Those the consumer sees when they visit dealer showrooms. There has to be the right balance for not only the buyer, but the brand as well. That is one of many beliefs of General Motors' new Product Czar Tom Stephens. This GM veteran, who has worn a variety of hats during his years with the company, now slips on the rather large shoes of Bob Lutz, the previous Product Czar who receives much of the credit for spearheading its recent vehicle renaissance. On this week's Autoline, Mr. Stephens discusses not only his automotive philosophy which will drive this side of the business, but the balance he says he must continue to bring to the burgeoning GM product lineup.

The "Re" WordGeneral Motors embarked on a new journey this week. It may have gone kicking and screaming but a new journey nonetheless. Some say it will lead to a "rebirth" of the company while others insist there will be a "renaissance" at GM. Yet the description the company seems to have decided on -- at least for its latest advertising campaign -- is re: invention; something that's been going on in the product end of the business for some time now. So as Fritz Henderson and his team begin to explore the new financial frontier ahead of them, outgoing Vice Chairman Bob Lutz and his replacement Tom Stephens along with Global Design Chief Ed Welburn put the company's best product foot forward this week by showcasing what the new GM has in store for the American public.Autoline After Hours co-host Peter De Lorenzo had a chance to talk separately with all three men about where General Motors has been and where its headed in this brave new world.
