Bottom line, the U.S. Air Force does not have enough pilots to sustain a credible combat force in peacetime, much less during a prolonged high-intensity conflict. History demonstrates that without depth of experienced aircrew, air forces collapse in major conflicts because they cannot continue operations as losses mount. While this crisis extends across the entire pilot force, the shortfall in fighter pilots is especially dire. Solving these challenges will require the Air Force to grow the size of both its aircraft inventory and pilot force, while simultaneously increasing the experience levels of its combat pilots across its Total Force.

In this episode of the Valley Today, host Janet Michael welcomes back Major Jacob Bixler and cadets from the Winchester Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol. The discussion kicks off with an introduction of Civil Air Patrol (CAP), touching on its role as the volunteer auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and its focus on cadet programs, aerospace education, and emergency services. Major Bixler reintroduces the audience to the CAP and the diverse community involved, emphasizing the leadership opportunities for cadets. Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Lauren Creese shares her journey, inspired by her father, highlighting her growth in leadership and public speaking. She discusses her current involvement and future aspirations within CAP, including her aim to achieve the Spaatz Award before transitioning to an adult member. Cadet Chief Master Sergeant Cora Creese (Lauren's younger sister) also shares her experiences, discussing her interest in leadership and potential career in aviation. She emphasizes how CAP has helped her develop various skills and how it connects members as an extended family through shared activities and responsibilities. The conversation then shifts to the Wreaths Across America project, a community event organized by CAP at the Winchester National Cemetery. Major Bixler explains the mission of the event: to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach future generations about the sacrifices made for the country. Both Lauren and Cora share their personal experiences with the event, noting its impact on participants and the community. Listeners learn about the logistics of sponsoring a wreath for $17 and the importance of ensuring no veteran's grave goes without a wreath. Major Bixler encourages community involvement and sponsorships to meet their goal of covering all 5,500 headstones. Click here to help. Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992. The organization's mission – Remember, Honor, Teach – is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December at Arlington, as well as at thousands of veterans' cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond. Founded in 1941 and established as the official civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force seven years later, Civil Air Patrol is chartered by Congress as a nonprofit organization for the purposes of youth development, aerospace education, and to promote general aviation. In an auxiliary role as a Total Force partner of the Air Force, CAP operates the world's largest fleet of single-engine aircraft for search and rescue, disaster relief, training, and education. Civil Air Patrol is dedicated to serving America's communities, saving lives, and shaping futures.

We are inspired by his stories and grateful for his service.   Take Home Messages: Military medicine and trauma surgery offer unique challenges and experiences that can be both rewarding and demanding. A significant part of the journey in military medicine involves being able to adapt and navigate through diverse situations, such as deployments to war zones like Iraq and Afghanistan. The resilience of the human spirit is a common thread in the stories of military surgeons, often seen in the face of difficult circumstances and life-altering experiences. The ability to draw parallels between military service and civilian medical practice can provide valuable insights and enrich both fields. Significant contributions to research in military medicine, particularly in areas such as trauma surgery and critical care, are vital for improving combat casualty care. Organizations like the Excelsior Surgical Society play a key role in preserving lessons from combat casualty care, contributing to the progress and development of military medicine. The experiences and expertise of military surgeons can greatly benefit civilian medical practices, especially in trauma and critical care. Continuous commitment to maintaining trauma readiness in peacetime is crucial for preserving the lessons learned and capabilities developed during periods of conflict. Learning from history and retaining the lessons from past experiences are essential for improving future practices in combat casualty care. Military medicine is not only about treating injuries and saving lives, but also about nurturing resilience, innovating in the face of challenges, and contributing to a larger cause.   Episode Keywords: Military Medicine, Trauma Surgery, Air Force Reserve, Jeremy Cannon, Harvard Medical School, ECMO Program, Excelsior Surgical Society, Deployment Stories, Iraq, Afghanistan, Clinical Services, Bagram, Combat Casualty Care, University of Pennsylvania, David Grant Medical Center, Research Unit, Navy Trauma Training Team, Total Force Readiness   Hashtags: #wardocs #military #medicine #podcast #MilMed #MedEd #MilitaryMedicine #TraumaSurgery #DeploymentStories #CombatMedicine #WarzoneChallenges #TraumaBayLife #CriticalCare #AirForceJourney #MedicalInnovations   Honoring the Legacy and Preserving the History of Military Medicine   The WarDocs Mission is to honor the legacy, preserve the oral history, and showcase career opportunities, unique expeditionary experiences, and achievements of Military Medicine. At Home Base, the team has cared for more than 25,000 veterans, and we know that connected to each veteran is a family who also serves. Change and injury affect everyone, and the kids, no matter how resilient, can benefit from our support and care. April is a special month, Month of the Military Child, initiated in 1986 by the DOD - a legacy of the Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger. Military children are connected through all branches of the military… and all with their own culture and color - With Air Force blue, Army green, Navy blue, Marine red, and Coast Guard blue— these colors combine as a Total Force to form purple. And this week, remember to wear Purple on April 15th for Purple Up day to recognize our military families and to thank all the kids for their sacrifice and service to us all.As the times and needs change, content has grown, benefitting kids, adults and all caregivers. In the last decade the U.S. Army reserve component has moved from a strategic to an operational reserve. This has driven a clear requirement for greater reserve integration amongst the active component. To accomplish this the Army and the Joint force have expanded the use of multi component units (MCUs) to improve efficiency and readiness across the active and reserve components of the DoD. A BETTER PEACE welcomes Darren Buss and Rick Giarusso to discuss the employment of MCUs in support of the the Army and Joint missions in keeping with the Total Force Policy. They join podcast editor Ron Granieri to explain the challenges and successes of marrying up the different components in support of real world missions. ...As you expand that to a larger scope with these larger Army headquarters it's more people and it's a little harder...there are consequences when you're trying to recruit and retain a reserve component element to meet that high level of operational tempo   Darren Buss is a Colonel and an aviation officer in the U.S. Army. Richard Giarusso is a Lieutenant Colonel and a logistics officer in the U.S. Army Reserves. They are both graduates of the AY20 Resident Class of the U.S. Army War College. Ron Granieri is an Associate Professor of History at the U.S. Army War College and the Editor of A BETTER PEACE.

Last year, the White House called on all federal agencies to draw up plans to reduce the government's civilian workforce. The Defense Department responded with a plan that explicitly rejected the presumption that civilian employees are too numerous, calling them an essential part of the total force, and asserting it needs more of them, not fewer. In this week's edition of On DoD, Thomas Hessel, the department's deputy director for total force manpower and resources joins Jared Serbu to discuss what the Pentagon has termed a "bold shift" in its approach to managing civilian employees.
