Kimberly is talking with Ginger Healy about her recent book, Regulation and Co-Regulation: Accessible Neuroscience and Connection Strategies that Bring Calm into the Classroom (15-Minute Focus). You know Ginger as the co-host of this Regulated and Relational podcast, but what you may not know is that Ginger is a clinical social worker with almost 30 years of experience. She has worked as a child abuse investigator, a hospital social worker, and a school therapist. Oh – and she is a mom to children with special needs. So, she is very well positioned to author this book! Ginger's book is a quick and easy read, something we all need in our busy lives. Ginger points out that we aren't born with the ability to regulate on our own. It takes years of experiences (and millions of those experiences) of co-regulation for us to develop that skill. Listen in to learn the difference between accountability and punishment. Why is accountability healing? Why is punishment traumatizing? How can we use this knowledge to heal our entire community? If you are caring for a child with a trauma history, you know that therapeutic parenting is needed for the long haul, and we must make these strategies work. Co-regulation is vital, but how can we achieve it with our children? Ginger says, “We need to understand what a child can do and what they can't do.” When they are in a position of fight, flight, or freeze, they can't do what we are asking of them. Co-regulation is the answer to helping them get out of those states. Julie and Ginger also discuss the concept of do-overs and we all need do-overs in our lives! Julie Beem has been the Executive Director of the Attachment & Trauma Network since 2009 and an active member and volunteer since 2005. Julie lives in the Atlanta area and is the mom to four and grandmother to three. Her youngest daughter, adopted internationally more than 20 years ago was the reason she sought and found support and education from the other parents at ATN. Julie left her former career in marketing and business development for engineering and architecture to advocate for and support the trauma-informed movement. Under Julie's leadership, ATN has grown to reach families, schools, and communities around the world. In 2016 ATN was given an Angel in Adoption award to honor the organization's contributions to adoptive families across the US. In 2018, ATN launched its Creating Trauma-Sensitive Schools Conference, which has grown to the largest trauma-informed educator conference in the world. Julie is a frequent speaker on early childhood trauma. Her true passion is making life easier for children impacted by trauma and the families who love them. Paying it forward has become the cornerstone of Julie's work through ATN. When not immersed in the daily tasks of a growing non-profit, Julie enjoys traveling with her husband, watching her daughter in horseback and swimming competitions, and playing with the grandbabies.

Stuart chats us through the Scottish Trauma network, what a major trauma centre is and the major trauma triage tool, helping us get the right patient to the right place at the right time.    BIOGRAPHY   Stuart is a Paramedic with the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) based in Paisley and is currently the Project Lead Major Trauma Triage Tools (MTTT). Stuart started his SAS career as a Community First Responder with Neilston and Uplawmoor First Responders who were awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service in 2018. Stuart has been involved since the group was established and is still hugely involved with their work. Stuart was appointed as Project Lead Major Trauma Triage Tools (MTTT) at the start of the year to roll out the MTTTs. “The Scottish Ambulance Service is a fundamental part of the STN and this is a really exciting time for us as the MTTTs will allow paramedics and technicians to triage patients to definitive care wherever possible”.   3 TOP TIPS   Utilise the MTTT where applicable. Apply the MTTT to all significantly injured patients or those involved in high mechanism incidents. If you need any support contact the Trauma Desk. Whether it is clinical, logistical or requesting the support of advanced teams contact to Trauma Desk when needed. Documentation of the MTTT when used is key. If the MTTT is applied to any patient whether they are major trauma positive, negative or whatever hospital they are conveyed to document the use of the MTTT.

In our first episode, we start at the beginning by defining "What is Trauma?" And discussing why creating a podcast at this point in time is a good idea. Our goal is always to inform, give insight and hopefully inspire you on your journey to becoming trauma-informed. As Julie says in this episode, "because trauma-informed isn't something you do...it's something you become." Today's definitions of Trauma come from Dr. Bruce Perry (www.bdperry.com and www.childtrauma.org) 1. A psychologically distressing event that is outside the range of normal human experience. Trauma often involves intense fear, terror, helplessness. - 2009 2. an experience, or pattern of experiences, that impairs the proper functioning of the person's stress-response system, making it more reactive or sensitive. - current definition informed by SAMSHA's Concept of Trauma SAMSHA's Concept of Trauma: Individual trauma results from an event, series of events or set of circumstances that is experienced by an individual as physically or emotionally harmful or life threatening and that has lasting adverse effects on the individual's functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional, or spiritual well-being.
