Snow can be a blessing and a curse when it comes to your plants whether it's your shrubs or trees in your yard. Jonathan Stickels, Operation Manager at Mariani Plants, says snow can actually serve as an insulator for plants. It's really the ice that's the biggest detriment to any of these plants. He provides insight into just how much of an impact that it can have on the nursery industry.  Protecting your plants from the harsh winter weather can be a difficult task. Stickels says at Mariani Plants, they cover them in hoop houses. But the plants they have growing in the field, they simply hope for the best. “On plants that have multiple stems similar to bushes you can tie them up to keep those branches tight to help with the load,” he adds. “That's about all you can do really. They're built for nature so you just kind of have to hope that they can weather the storm and having the right plants in the right place makes a big difference.”  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Recorded by Robert Miles: http://robertskmiles.com More information about the newsletter here: https://rohinshah.com/alignment-newsletter/ YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfGGFXwKpr-TJ5HfxEFaFCg   Sorry for the long hiatus! I was really busy over the past few months and just didn't find time to write this newsletter. (Realistically, I was also a bit tired of writing it and so lacked motivation.) I'm intending to go back to writing it now, though I don't think I can realistically commit to publishing weekly; we'll see how often I end up publishing. For now, have a list of all the things I should have advertised to you whose deadlines haven't already passed.   NEWS Survey on AI alignment resources (Anonymous) (summarized by Rohin): This survey is being run by an outside collaborator in partnership with the Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA). They ask that you fill it out to help field builders find out which resources you have found most useful for learning about and/or keeping track of the AI alignment field. Results will help inform which resources to promote in the future, and what type of resources we should make more of. Announcing the Inverse Scaling Prize ($250k Prize Pool) (Ethan Perez et al) (summarized by Rohin): This prize with a $250k prize pool asks participants to find new examples of tasks where pretrained language models exhibit inverse scaling: that is, models get worse at the task as they are scaled up. Notably, you do not need to know how to program to participate: a submission consists solely of a dataset giving at least 300 examples of the task. Inverse scaling is particularly relevant to AI alignment, for two main reasons. First, it directly helps understand how the language modeling objective ("predict the next word") is outer misaligned, as we are finding tasks where models that do better according to the language modeling objective do worse on the task of interest. Second, the experience from examining inverse scaling tasks could lead to general observations about how best to detect misalignment. $500 bounty for alignment contest ideas (Akash) (summarized by Rohin): The authors are offering a $500 bounty for producing a frame of the alignment problem that is accessible to smart high schoolers/college students and people without ML backgrounds. (See the post for details; this summary doesn't capture everything well.) Job ad: Bowman Group Open Research Positions (Sam Bowman) (summarized by Rohin): Sam Bowman is looking for people to join a research center at NYU that'll focus on empirical alignment work, primarily on large language models. There are a variety of roles to apply for (depending primarily on how much research experience you already have). Job ad: Postdoc at the Algorithmic Alignment Group (summarized by Rohin): This position at Dylan Hadfield-Menell's lab will lead the design and implementation of a large-scale Cooperative AI contest to take place next year, alongside collaborators at DeepMind and the Cooperative AI Foundation. Job ad: AI Alignment postdoc (summarized by Rohin): David Krueger is hiring for a postdoc in AI alignment (and is also hiring for another role in deep learning). The application deadline is August 2. Job ad: OpenAI Trust & Safety Operations Contractor (summarized by Rohin): In this remote contractor role, you would evaluate submissions to OpenAI's App Review process to ensure they comply with OpenAI's policies. Apply here by July 13, 5pm Pacific Time. Job ad: Director of CSER (summarized by Rohin): Application deadline is July 31. Quoting the job ad: "The Director will be expected to provide visionary leadership for the Centre, to maintain and enhance its reputation for cutting-edge research, to develop and oversee fundraising and new project and programme design, to ensure the proper functioning of its operations and administration, and to lead its endeavours to secure longevity for the Centre within the University." Job ads: Redwood Research (summarized by Rohin): Redwood Research works directly on AI alignment research, and hosts and operates Constellation, a shared office space for longtermist organizations including ARC, MIRI, and Open Philanthropy. They are hiring for a number of operations and technical roles. Job ads: Roles at the Fund for Alignment Research (summarized by Rohin): The Fund for Alignment Research (FAR) is a new organization that helps AI safety researchers, primarily in academia, pursue high-impact research by hiring contractors. It is currently hiring for Operation Manager, Research Engineer, and Communication Specialist roles. Job ads: Encultured AI (summarized by Rohin): Encultured AI is a new for-profit company with a public benefit mission: to develop technologies promoting the long-term survival and flourishing of humanity and other sentient life. They are hiring for a Machine Learning Engineer and an Immersive Interface Engineer role. Job ads: Fathom Radiant (summarized by Rohin): Fathom Radiant is a public benefit corporation that aims to build a new type of computer which they hope to use to support AI alignment efforts. They have several open roles, including (but not limited to) Scientists / Engineers, Builders and Software Engineer, Lab.

On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes Shawn Whitmore, Operation Manager at Williams out of Wyoming. Right away, Shawn delves into Williams' newest acquisition of 1.2 million acres in South Central Wyoming. Purchased from BP and Southland, Williams will use the land for exploration and production (E&P). Before his 16 years at Williams, Shawn wanted more from life when he was serving in law enforcement. So he jumped on a hiring opportunity at Williams when they were expanding one of their power plants in Wyoming. Early on at Williams, Shawn realized that nobody but himself would hold him back from what he wanted to do. He jumped on new positions, moving up the ranks where he could. He'd assumed the bachelor's degrees of other candidates would outweigh his qualifications. One hiring manager alluded to his diversity of experience throughout the company. He had worked in various locations, with various employees, and in varying roles, which put him ahead of candidates who had a degree but less experience. This relentless pursuit of chasing the next best opportunity has carried the pace of Shawn's career. Shawn Whitmore Williams Michael Haning DISCO Disco Inc. In this show, we will cover what an Operations Manager does, why you need them, and what it is like being one. In addition, we will break down the characteristics you should look for in an Operation Manager for your business and how to know if you really need one.  What You Will Learn In This Episode: - Who Zoe is, and what is her role in my company - How Zoe decided to stop running her own business and start working with me - What are the things every Operations Manager should have - Why it is vital to find an Operations Manager who shares your core values - Why it is crucial to find an Operations Manager who is strong and confident enough to challenge you An Operations Manager is not something you'll need in the first years of your business. Like many outdoor educators' travel has been a constant theme in the life of our guests today. I'm thrilled to have Heather Hamilton join us on the show. Heather has always had a hard time answering, “where are you from?” – as she has lots of places that feel like home but was born in Wichita, Kansas, and has travelled a fair amount for a Kansas kid. But after finishing University at CU-Boulder, she bounced around the west a fair bit, did some international travels to Costa Rica, Italy, Greece, Sweden, Mexico, etc., and eventually ended up living in New Zealand for a bunch of years.  While living in New Zealand, she travelled extensively throughout Australia and Indonesia, as well. And now her base is in Hawaii. She worked in outdoor education roughly 2000-2013. After her time as the Operations Manager for the NOLS NZ Branch, she shifted to Hawaii and chased after more judging work with professional surfing events. Heather was doing that as well in NZ while still working for NOLS but decided to mix things up a bit and go after some surfing dreams.  When she first started with NOLS, she was a river instructor - primarily white water kayaking and then migrated into canoeing, hiking, sea-kayaking, etc as most of us do. In this episode: Heather shares her experience following the devastating earthquake in New Zealand in 2011, while she was an Operation Manager of the NOLS branch outside of Christchurch. and had been residing near a 30-minute drive through town to Sumner Beach. She explains how shaking turned water-saturated layers of sand and silt beneath the surface into sludge that squirted upwards through cracks. Thick layers of silt covered properties and streets and water and sewage from broken pipes flooded streets. House foundations cracked and buckled, wrecking many homes. She tells us how once the mobile coverage was back on; students and instructors were bombarded with calls from parents and loved ones all around the world. She further states the tragic aftershocks that lasted for months playing a game of catch it before it hits the floor, as she assisted the neighborhood with laundry and filling water jugs, which resulted in taking an emotional toll on her health and pushed her to the breaking point. Hamilton talks about another dreadful incident in Mexico City, and how she was hot to trot beforehand knowing all the ins and outs – that surfaced all the memories and struggled of the past. Moving forward, Heather shares some memorable trips on the Drysdale River in Northwest Australia, and how it still is the most special place to her. She gave us a deeper insight into how they went to the Malcolm Douglas crocodile farm and learn about saltwater crocodile country, and get educated on 10 different snakes. She entertains us more with hilarious funny stories with her pals, Warren, Travis, and Lelia, and shares some great tips to stay dry in Mozzie domes. We throw a quick intriguing rapid-fire questions at her, which she answers as gracefully as only she can. Lastly, she tells us her favourite hot drink after a long hard day at camps, and one particular place she wishes to share this drink in the field with - after all, what's more, soothing than wrapping your frozen fingers around a piping hot mug of something refreshing.

In this podcast, we look at the differing views on single-use and multi-use, with a special focus on food service items, such as paper cups. How should brand owners think about how to serve food and beverage in coffee shops and quick-service restaurants? And can consumers continue to use takeaway cups with good conscience? When you are looking to build a profitable lifestyle business there are points where you need to leverage other people's time, skills and resources in order to get to the ‘next level' of business success. This is often an uncomfortable process, but as Gary shares, you have to ‘let go to grow'. First outsource finances (like a bookkeeper) then bring in an administrator (get that admin off your desk!), bring in a marketer (marketing is the life blood of your business), then get a PA (maybe you promote the admin person to PA), then get someone in to handles sales, by which point you might want to create an Operations Manager role to manage the rest of that team.  In this episode you will learn:   How to delegate  Why delegation leads to elevation  Why it is important that your PA manages you  How the right Operation Manager can become the puppeteer of the business Why sales is always the last thing you delegate The Proactive Podcast with Gary Das is brought to you by the awarding winning business owner, author, speaker, coach and mentor.  This show brings you proven strategies to improve your life and your business, along with interviews from some of the most inspiring and motivating personalities across the globe. You’re already hired…I’ve said it a few hundred times, “You have the power of choice in your heart. Compete with an unheard of list of unemployed radio and television people for one or two jobs or pick up pod or pad-casting.” If that becomes the next step in Broadcasting your real job isn’t hosting the show, it’s running the operation. You’re the talent, head of promotions, program director, general manager, sales staff and production guru. All with no budget and no monetary pay. At least for now! But maybe one day. If you want it. You’re hired! By far that’s the reason why most podcasts end up on that list of things you once did. From booking guests, to hosting interviews, producing shows then social networking the presentation, a lot of time has been lost without making a living. I laugh when Howard Stern blisters the ears of pod and pad-casters, “If you aren’t making a decent wage don’t call yourself a Broadcaster!” In 2006 my journey into the digital world started out as a Blogger. The station Operation Manager angrily scorned his on-air staff, “You complain about not getting enough time to talk on the air. Now that I’ve given each of you a webpage, none of you want to say anything.”I raced to that computer and sat there doing absolutely nothing. Now that I had an open field what was I going to say? I’d start. Stop. Start again. I wasn’t into sports. The world had too many music writers. I can’t stand local and national news! Crap! I’m a failure! It was that moment in a very dark hole that a new found energy pushed itself beyond my fingerprints straight onto a big ole ugly thick computer screen. I was going to be real. What exactly does that mean? I wasn’t sure. I just knew I had to get onto this blogging kick and make it quick. Before Spreaker, Libsyn, SoundCloud and Podomatic, the only place I could put my physical voice that silent screen was to attach an mp3 file. Double click and you heard the radio guy trying to be something he was a long way from becoming. Even radio talk show hosts go through a growing period. There’s something about being live that fine tunes the craft of a communicator. Recording it for later use becomes a mastered art. Getting to that comfortable position requires a great deal of self-discipline. Knowing when too much has been said. Even worse, when what you’ve produced doesn’t scratch the surface of good content. It sounds no different than two bored pigeons sitting on a powerline. The moral of the story is simple… If you want to play radio get into the race and hope to God you not only land the on air position but you keep it longer than six months to a year. There are too many unemployed people willing to always do your job cheaper. With podcasting? You’re hired! Find every business hat you’ve got and put em on your head. It’s show time! Not just today! Everyday! You can’t build a solid army of followers laying down one show a week or jamming ten shows into a season and we’ll see you in six months. Work your fingers into those digital vibrations. You’ll see in no time the real payoff has nothing to do with cashing checks.

Pirates Bay Water Park Baytown Texas Aquatics Operation Manager We are talking with Journey Amos, she is the Aquatics Operation Manager with the City of Baytown Texas. A Rather large operation that employs 100's of lifeguard and staff that support the customer along with handling all the maintenance to maintaining the facility right down to the water quality to keep you safe so you can enjoy the water and all that has to offer. Listen to today's episode to get the whole story and to understand the importance of haveing a "Culture of Safety". Journey, just like so many other aquatic professionals got started young as a lifeguard and working her way up the ladder to where she manages community pools to provide lifeguards. To where is now today with the City of Baytown Tx. We talk about the challenges to hire qualified lifeguards as it's not just a problem for her but that of many other facilities to have the lifeguard pass the minimum swim test. Proud supporter ofThe Kels GroupThe WAVE System Drowning Detection http://.wavedds.com 'Culture of Safety that has to be in place with an operation like this, right down to finding the parent of a 2 year old that may have wondered off from their parents. Having parents understand that they need to keep their children at an arms length away at all time. The water is a dangerous place for children, as drowning is the leading cause of accidental death to children ages 1-4. It is a priority of Journey's but also of ours here at the Kels Group to educate parents on the importance of learning to swim and to properly supervise children at all times as the staff and lifeguard are not babysitters. I have explained this many times before in my own situation regarding my daughters drowning. As parents we must be responsible. Understand that it can happen to you as drowning can happen to anyone at any time when they are in the water regardless of ability to swim or supervision. We are Human and because we are we make mistakes. Understand water safety and know the rules. Learn to swim at the earliest age and yes that includes you too Moms and Dads.
